KODIYETTAM 2K19: ONAM CELEBRATION 2019
‘KODIYETTAM 2K19’ the Onam Celebration of the year 2019 was conducted at the
Aligarh Muslim University, Centre Malappuram on 16th
and 17th
of September 2019 with
great vigour and enthusiasm. The programme was organized under the guidance of Teacher
in Charge Dr. Raghul V. Rajan, (Assistant Professor, Department of Law) and, coordination
of student convenor Mr. Ahmed Shameer (5th
year BALLB).
Onam is the one of the most auspicious festivals of Kerala which is held as a
celebration of annual harvest. The celebration of Onam lasts for a period of ten days, which
are known as, Atham, Chithira, Chodhi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketa, Moolam, Poordam,
Uthradom, and Thiruvonam in the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam. It is believed by
the Keralites that King Mahabali will visit Kerala on the day of Onam. The main events in the
festivals are Pookalam/Flower Carpet, Pulikali (Tiger Dance), Sadhya (Onam Feast),
Onathallu (Martial Arts) etc. Onam is celebrated by all Keralites without any regional or
religious discrimination. It is the most noted secular festival in Kerala.
The first day of the celebration (16th
September 2019) started at 2:00 PM. Sack Race,
Lemon Spoon Race, Cup Arrangement, Coin Hunt, and Water Filling were the main events
of the day. Competitions were conducted for the students as well as for the non-teaching
staffs of the centre. Around 15 participants took part in the each competition. The
competitions were conducted one by one with the support of the organizing team and
cooperative support of the audience without any delay. The competitions of the first day
came to an end by 6.30 PM.
Flower Carpet: First Prize
The second day of the celebration began with the fragrance of the fresh flowers of
Pookalam/Flower Carpet. Pookalam is one of the main events of Onam celebration. The
competitions started at 8:00 AM and, the first event was Pookalam competition on class wise
basis. The 2nd
year BALLB students have won the first prize in the competition. Treasure
Hunt, Painting, Poetry, Musical Chair, Beauty Spot, and Arm Wrestling are the other events
of morning session of the day. Students, Teachers and all the staff of the centre arrived at the
celebration arena in traditional Kerala attire; boys in shirt and dhoti and girls in Kerala saris.
Musical Chair Competition
The next attraction of the day was the Kerala feast (Onasadya). A traditional,
delicious Kerala feast was served to all the people who came for the celebration. It comprised
of 20 dishes served along with brown rice and, it has all the six fundamental flavors (sweet,
sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent). All the teaching/non teaching staff along with the
students had the feast in the old academic block of the Centre.
Onasadya: Traditional Kerala Feast
The afternoon events started with the Pillow Fight, then Baloon Breaking, Tug of war,
and ended with a Folk Song competition. The winners of Treasure Hunt competition was
MBA first years. Tug of War, the game which added more soul and energy to the celebration
was won by 4th
year BALLB Girls and 1st year MBA Boys. MBA 1
st year students became
the overall champions of the ‘’KODIYETTAM 2K19’’ celebrations and, 5th
year BALLB
(HON) came to be the runner up.
Pillow Fight Competition
The program ended at 8:30pm and it was a great success. It was a good experience for
the new comers of the Aligarh Muslim University, Centre Malappuram and a wonderful
opportunity for them to take part in the cultural events of Kerala and feel it in its true sense.
Dr. Raghul V. Rajan, the Teacher in Charge has thanked Dr. Faisal K. P., the Director of the
Centre for his consent and cooperation in realizing the event. He further thanked all the
teachers and students of the Centre for making the event a grand success.
