About GIREM

It is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed

association.

GIREM will play a proactive role in improving infrastructural issues that

many businesses are grappling with on a day to day basis.

It as a collective body. It will be the voice of the industry and will work with

local government and supervisory agencies in the areas of infrastructure

planning, sustainable growth and development.

GIREM will partner with the Industry, Government and Government Agencies

through advisory, consultative and participatory processes.

What is Sixth GIREM Leadership Summit?

The Sixth GIREM Leadership will be held on 24th & 25th Oct; Venue – Radisson Blue Plaza, Delhi.

The program is supported by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India.

The 2013 summit will provide insights into the changing economic scenario and market behaviours which are poised to show an upward trend post the downturn and recession effects.

Why GIREM is interested in Kochi?

A major port city on the west coast of India by the Arabian Sea, Kochi is strategically located with

port, good roads, rail and air (domestic & international airport)

connectivity.

In 2011, Kochi's population was around 17.5 million and it is

expected to grow to 22 million by 2021.

Prominent industries are tourism, electronics hardware and IT/ITEs

industry, shipbuilding, petrochemical refining,

handicrafts, rubber, coir, seafood and other agricultural food

products such as spices, bananas, coconuts, etc.

Availability of excellent talent pool.

Infrastructure Development

New international terminal costing INR 3 billion & catering to 10,000 passengers per annum has been announced.

Kochi Metro Rail with connectivity from Alwaye (North) to Petta (South) is planned. Work has begun on the project with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laying the foundation stone for the project in September 2012.

Upcoming International Container Trans-shipment Terminal spread on 115 acres to handle 5.5 mn TEU's.

Oceanarium, an underwater world aquarium housing marine creatures with research facilities is under construction.

LNG Re-gasification Terminal 1st phase of 2.5 Million TPA, which will be enhanced to 5 Million TPA in the 2nd phase.

Airport-Seaport Road for faster accessibility to airport and better connectivity of the CSEZ with other commercial areas is being constructed.

Factors leading towards the reinvention

1. Cognizant is gearing up to hire 12000 workforce by 2017.2. Multimodal Transport hub.3. An International Airport Cochin International Airport (CIAL). 4. The Metro Rapid Transit system - The Kochi Metro is an under construction project, which

once effective will considerably ease traffic congestion in the city. It also multiple ports and ferry service between islands.

5. Transit corridor - connects II & III order urban centers such as Kodungallur, Angamaly, Piravam and Chertala.

6. The availability of 15 GBPS bandwidth, through undersea cables such as FLAG, SAFE and SEA ME WE 3 ensures seamless data flow from worldwide which helps the IT business.

7. The Info Park promoted by Govt. of Kerala is home to companies like Wipro and TCS. The establishment of Smart City project by Dubai Internet City, Info Park will make Kochi the Silicon Valley of Kerala.

8. Smart city work commenced.9. Growing population and economic migration mainly due to IT sector and urbanization has

opened a great market for retail industry and shopping malls. And having the Lulu mall in operations Kochi will attract more brands and products for its citizens.
