Early in the Spring term, we celebrated Victo-rian Week and children had the opportunity to experi-ence what it was like during the Victorian era in a school environment. This week has taken place each year so that children understand more about the history of Brit-ain and can compare it to present day.

Each year group carried out a variety of tasks and learning activities. In Year 6 children learned about suffragettes and suffragists and about the flourishing cotton industry during Victorian times. Learning about Queen Victoria, Year 5 found out detailed information of the strict side to Queen Victoria as well as enjoying a Victorian walk around the local area where they discov-ered Victorian houses still standing today. In Year 4, chil-dren learnt about Victorian houses and how they once lived. Finally, Year 3 learnt about traditional Victorian dress wear, which they found extremely interesting, par-ticularly Bevan Young who said, “It was really interesting learning about Victorian clothing and of what they used to wear. It’s completely different to how we dress to-day!”

Most surprisingly however, was the job offer that came from Miss Payne during the Victorian Assem-bly, to a young boy (Lewis Burston in 3L) who took on the role of a Victorian headmaster so efficiently and admirably, that Miss Payne had no choice but to offer him the role of head teacher, once she’s “had enough!”

We think that’s really impressive and can’t wait to see what will happen when he does eventually take over!

Sizzling Spectacular Science! On Tuesday 27th February, a specialist Scien-

tist (Zainy Zee) visited our school and carried out a vari-

ety of “Eggsperiments,” which was super “Eggsiting” for

the children and teachers of Knowsley Junior School as

well as preparing the children for Science Week.

At 9.00am the children were gathered into the

hall for what they thought would be a ’normal’ Tuesday

assembly. Little did they know, they would be observ-

ing some truly mad science!

“My favourite part was when she set her hand on fire. It was

very exciting and we all couldn’t wait to see how she did it,”

spoke a Year 5 pupil with much enthusiasm. Aleser in Year 5

also preferred the experiment where Zainy set alight her hand

using Butane gas. He was thankful she didn’t injure herself and

the Knowsley Knows team felt that she showed true profes-

sionalism throughout the whole assembly, putting safety at the

forefront of everything that she did.

Overall, everyone agreed that Mad Science was very

impressive and were even more thrilled when they discovered

they may be able to enjoy the Mad Science after school club .

Maths Mania As leaders of the maths team and being lovers

of maths ourselves, we’ve been looking into the benefits

of studying maths. We weren’t surprised to read about

all of the great things that maths can do for you and

hope this convinces you to work hard in your maths les-

sons too...

Everyone thinks maths is hard however accord-

ing to research, it actually improves lots of your skills and

gets your brain working hard so that you’re ready for

other challenges in life.

Practising your calculation skills makes your

maths recall skills appear faster. It develops confidence

and self-esteem and it sharpens concentration and ob-

servance, as well as improving listening skills and helping

your mental health and sight. It also increases memory

power! Those are all the reasons maths is good for you

so doesn’t it make sense to keep at it?

During the spring term, we visited a maths les-

son in Year 5 and were impressed by the enthusiasm of

our children. One child, who wished to remain anony-

mous however stated that she found maths, rather

‘difficult’ which we all know isn’t a nice feeling at all.

However she was keen to take our advice of, ‘sticking

with it’ as most often it does just click and becomes so

satisfying when you start to understand more.

For all of you mathematicians that like a chal-

lenge or for those that want to start improving your un-

derstanding, have a go at our challenging KS2 competi-

tion. Once complete, please drop your completed sheet

to 6S (to Mrs Stewardson) and the winner of the maths

HEALTH MATTERS Both the sports and health teams have been working together to find out about how a healthy lifestyle is encouraged

throughout Knowsley Junior School as well as coming up with some extra tips to get you feeling your best!

Daily 15

Knowsley Junior School prides itself on being a healthy

school. As part of that, we participate in the Daily 15. This

requires children at our school to run, walk or jog around a

designated track around our school to ensure they sustain

a fit and healthy body and improve their stamina. But does

it really work? Over the past few weeks, the sports team

has been monitoring the Daily 15 to see if it really is as

beneficial as people say.

Observing the Daily 15, it’s clear to see that the

children enjoy it with plenty of smiles to see. The curricu-

lum is extremely demanding in places and whilst the teach-

ers make it fun, a brain break seems to always be welcome!

The children are either using the time to catch up with

friends whilst walking at a fast pace or are working hard to

build up their fitness, jogging at speed.

“I enjoy the Daily 15 and have seen myself getting better at

running since the start of the year!” said a Year 3 child

which is most promising. Whilst a teacher of the school

claimed, “Even adults have demanding days and quite often

I use the Daily 15 to de-stress and clear my mind… my mood

literally lifts as soon as I start running.” She did however

confirm that in order to get the most out of the time, you

should set yourself challenges and build up your fitness. We

think some people need to spend their time chatting less

and focusing more on improving their health, to get the best

out of the time, especially as a clear mind leaves space for

new learning! Keep at it guys!

Dancing For Sport Relief From 19th-23rd March 2018, we collected money for

Sport Relief. As a long standing charity, Sport Relief raises

money to tackle critical issues across the UK and the rest of the

world whilst building a love of sport and creating sporting com-

munities. During this week, throughout lunchtime, there were a

variety of activities made available to the children of Knowsley.

for 20p, including: dodgeball, benchball, crab football and

hockey by the sports leaders. Interestingly though, Knowsley

also decided to host a Danceathon on Friday 23rd March.

Many schools all over England participated in this world-wide

event; children were able to dress in their best party clothes for

£1 whilst dancing to their hearts content to the super DJ skills

of Mr Jackson.

The Danceathon went down an absolute storm! Oliver

Hunt in Year 3 was very enthusiastic when interviewed, stating,

“The dancing was so much fun and it was also really funny see-

ing people try out some different dance moves.” Tilly Siddall

(Year 3) was equally positive about the event: “ It was good

because I love dancing anyway and it was great to do some-

thing different.”

Knowsley took part in this event to change the lives of

less fortunate people all over the world, using sport to get peo-

ple moving. Together, we managed to raise £412 for Sport Re-

lief; altogether England raised £38,195,278!!! It’s great to know

we played a part in that.

Thank you to all who donated to this amazing cause.

How good are your Geography skills? Mental Health Week for

Children? What?

Not many people realise that

children can suffer with mental health,

mostly associating it with adults. However

Children’s Mental Health Week took place

on the 5th-11th February and Knowsley

thought it would be a good idea to high-

light some of the key issues that affect

children and how to maintain a healthy

mind.

Children’s Mental Health Week

encourages children to be #unique which

supports the Knowsley ethos 100%! Mrs

Turner regularly hosts important assem-

blies and lessons covering some key

serious issues that we, as a school, appreciate and it

has been beneficial in helping us to take a more mature

approach in tackling our friendships with one another.

The week itself also enabled us to talk about the posi-

tives of our own looks and characteristics as well as

carrying out a number of fun activities. 6S also pre-

sented an assembly to their parents and the whole

school, which gave tips on encouraging a healthy mind.

These included, staying positive, exercising regularly,

drinking lots of water and eating a healthy diet as well

as laughing a lot! With that in mind… we’ve introduced

Snow Way We’re Cancelling

World Book Day Again!

Knowsley Junior School was finally

able to celebrate World Book Day last week in

the glorious sunshine to enjoy and share their

favourite stories, with the snow hopefully offi-

cially behind us.

On Thursday 19th April, children ar-

rived to school in an array of wonderful outfits

representing their favourite book characters,

ready to READ, READ, READ!

The day began with a fantastic as-

sembly , courtesy of Miss Bell’s class (4B)

where the children were reminded of the

benefits of reading and 4B’s passion for read-

ing was evident for all to see. Following that,

the children carried out numerous book activi-

ties, ending the day listening to a favourite

story read by one of Knowsley’s teachers.

The children loved dressing up and

celebrating their love of books. Joe Holroyd

(Year 3) really enjoyed it saying, “It was bril-

liant being able to dress up as my favourite

character and it was a great change having

another teacher read to us.” Sadie-Anna

Whiteley (3L), who dressed up as Matilda,

loved seeing what her friends had dressed up

as but she did say, she was, “worried Miss

Payne might act like Mrs Trunchbull for the

day” and was very relieved to last the day,

without being thrown out of a window.

We in the news team wish to remind

all pupils to read at least twenty minutes a

day. It’s amazing how much new vocabulary

you come to learn and how much it helps the

rest of your learning, especially writing. We

can’t wait for next year’s World Book Day al-

ready!

When you’re really glad this isn’t your

Head Teacher.

Science Day

Science Day, organised by Mrs Anderson, was an amazing day, when

Knowsley could enjoy taking part in some crazy science experiments.

On Monday 12th March, Knowsley marked yet another significant learning

day... SCIENCE DAY . This involved visiting each teacher at the school who wowed the

children with a variety of fantastic, new experiments. The day was hugely eventful

and as planned, it expanded the children’s knowledge of science AS WELL as allowing

them to have fun!!

In 6S, Mrs Stewardson presented the classic Mentos in Diet Coke experi-

ment, showing the effects of carbon dioxide and aspartame, as well as seeing if Diet

Coke or normal Coke would float! Then, in Miss Phillips’ class, children made storm

cloud bookmarks which have been really useful during ERIC time! Interestingly, Miss

Barrass’ experiment explained why a pencil stayed in the bottle of rice (which the

children thought was to do with music!) and over at 5MO, the pupils learned that hot

water rises and cold water sinks down– children were able to test this idea with food

colouring and hot and cold water! 4P saw another ‘Float or Sink’ experiment, but with

eggs (with an increasing amount of salt in each cup) - later creating to inflate a

balloon! In 4B children discovered more about atoms and molecules, and how fairy

liquid repelled the pepper. In Miss Anderson’s class Twinkle Twinkle was played with

Wack-a-Booms then in Miss Hewitt’s class, children attempted to make a paperclip

float after watching an interesting video to explain how to do it. Mr Langhorn’s ex-

periment involved attempting to make the perfect paper aeroplane, using thrust, lift,

drag and gravity and Miss Goodwin taught the children about sound making vibra-

tions, attempting to make Rice Krispies dance. Finally to Miss Aldred, who taught the

children about sound. The children used milk bottles like xylophones and tapped

them, producing different sound depending on the amount of water in each bottle!

All very interesting I’m sure you’d agree!

Science day is hugely important to Knowsley Junior School and will no doubt

be celebrated again next year. Teachers you best get planning some more experi-

ments!

Meet Mr Jones...

Ever feel like you see some-

one everyday but you don’t

really know them? Knowsley

Knows will be interviewing a

member of the Knowsley

team for each issue, where

you will get to find out a bit

more about them and their

secrets.

So Mr Jones… How long have you worked at KJS?

Just over 18 months and I love it!

Who would you say is the tidiest teacher overall?

I can’t really answer that. Some people can be really tidy then next minute they can be

REALLY messy. Erm well if I had to say, I’d say Mrs Anderson. Yes Mrs Anderson.

What do you like about working at Knowsley?

Just the people that I work with. I like that I can have a laugh

What has been your favourite Knowsley moment?

Going to the pantomime. I love Christmas and it’s nice to do something different.

What is it like working in the holidays when there is nobody in school? What do you do

all day?

Well I get on with lots of jobs, like fixing things and carrying out maintenance but because

I have the school to myself I get to have my music playing really loud. I also do lots of

backflips down the corridor but don’t tell anyone.

Not to put you on the spot but WHO is your school best friend?

Mr Shae. Us men have to stick together!

Right enough about school… what about your personal life?

What about it?

What are your hobbies?

Fishing for trout and driving.

What is your favourite food?

I love Indian food; the spicier the better.

Where is your favourite place to go on holiday?

I love going anywhere different to be honest but I’ve got to say I love Whitby.

What is your most memorable/best memory?

Probably when my first son was born.

What was you favourite subject at school?

I loved history and PE. I was really good at long distance running.

What advice would you give to our Knowsley pupils?

I would say always work hard and try your best. Help others when they need help and

listen to your teachers!

ACT SAFE TO BE SAFE

On Tuesday the 6th February, Safer Internet Day

took place. The children of Knowsley were involved in a num-

ber of interesting activities, however the most enlightening

was learning about the age restrictions of the many social

media sites that are available to us today.

We feel the reason for these age restrictions are to

protect our children until they are mature enough to protect

themselves. If you do access these sites you are breaking the

law!

Need to get to work EARLY?

Drop your child at Squirrels from 7.30am to join

in a variety of fun and learning activities. Chil-

dren also receive their breakfast and a range of

delicious snacks after school.

Contact the school office for more information.
