    What

    The National Council forHotel Management andCatering Technology

    Joint Entrance Examination(NCHMCT JEE) is conductedfor admission to BSc inHospitality and Hotel

    Administration. The Councilconducts this entrance test forits various affiliated collegesincluding the Institutes ofHotel Management (IHMs)located across India. Thecompetitive entrance test isconducted in various testcenters all over India. Some ofthe test centres are

    Ahmedabad, Chandigarh,Delhi, Mumbai, Dehradun,Thiruvananthapuram,Hyderabad, Guwahati andBangalore. For the finalselection, merit list is preparedon the basis of candidates'marks in the entrance test.

    National Council for HotelManagement and CateringTechnology is an autonomousbody that functions underMinistry of Tourism,Government of India. Itaffiliates institutes of hotelmanagement in the country.

    WhereThe entrance exam is for

    admission to Bachelor ofScience BSc - Hospitality andHotel Administrationprogramme at over 50affiliated institutes, bothgovernment and private. Someof these institutes are:

    WhoNational Council for HotelManagement and CateringTechnology has regularisedmany eligibility criteria for the

    candidates, who are appearingin the JEE exam. The eligibilityprerequisites for the entranceexam are given in thefollowing lines.

    The candidates must notbe above 22 years of age whileapplying for the exam. For theSC/ ST candidates, the upperage limit is 25 years.

    The candidates need tohave passed Higher SecondaryCertificate Examination (10+2)

    or its equivalent examination,from any recognised state/national Board.

    The qualifyingexamination must have passedby the candidates in anystream but English as one of

    the main subjects. The candidates, who areappearing in 10+2 levelexamination, are also eligibleto apply for the JEE exam.

    How?National Council for Hotel

    Management and CateringTechnology conducts JEEentrance test to preparestudents in the field ofhospitality. As a result, thequestions in the exam arepurposefully prepared toexamine students' skill in thefield. The examination patternof NCHMCT - JEE is givenbelow:

    NCHMCT - JEE is a writtentest in which the candidateshave to answer all the

    questions within three hoursduration.

    The question paper isdivided into five parts:

    1. Reasoning and Logical Deduction2. Numerical Ability and ScientificAptitude3. Service and Hospitality Aptitude

    4. General Knowledge and CurrentAffairs5. English Language

    Each part of the questionpaper carries 30 marks.

    There is a provision ofnegative marking in the exam.

    All the questions and theinstructions are both inEnglish and Hindi medium, in

    which the students have tochoose one medium accordingto their convenience.

    Although the council hasnot prescribed any particularsyllabus for the test, studentsshould follow the exam

    pattern of JEE. To prepare forthe competitive entrance test,one can practice Englishlanguage and reasoning,knowledge skills in hospitalityservice and excellentcommand of generalawareness. Apart from that,the students can studyprevious years JEE samplepapers to prepare for the test.

    WhenThe exam is held in April

    every year, for which the saleof application forms begins inDecember. The admissioncloses in February. The resultsare announced in May, after

    ourteen-year-old RudhdiWalawalkar from Mumbai,who represented Maharash-

    tra at the recently held NationalScience Elocution Competitionin New Delhi, stood second inthe contest. Rudhdi receivedRs12,000 in cash and a certificateof merit. She will now be visitingMadam Curie's house, her labo-ratory and museum as a youthdelegate from India, for 10 days.

    For the competition based onthe chemistry, Rudhdiresearched and prepared a six-minute speech. The theme for

    this year's competition wasbased on Madam Curie's contri-bution to science. Rudhdi foundthis fascinating. "I learnt variousnew aspects of chemistry andalso got exposure at the nationallevel. Such competitions always

    help us understand subjects bet-ter," said an elated Rudhdi, whois studying in Standard IX atChildren's Academy in AshokNagar, Kandivli.

    The intention of the competi-tion was to inculcate values ofbasic science. "It helps studentsa lot. We always encourage themto take part in this competitionas it requires tremendousresearch skills as well as craft tofit in a lot in just six minutes. Stu-

    dents also have to focus on theirroutine studies. Rudhdi hasalways been hardworking andthe school is proud of her," saidK P Padmavathy, guide and Rud-hdi's teacher.

    The National Council of Sci-

    ence and Museum (departmentof culture) conducts the science-based competition at the nation-al level every year. The competi-tion begins from the ward leveland moves on to the district andstate level. Eventually, only onestudent is selected to representthe state at the national level.

    Accordingly, Rudhdi was select-ed from 645 candidates at thedistrict level, 70 at the zonal leveland 16 at the state level.

    Reciprocal mentoringThis is with reference to the article' The other way round' by Neha

    Shah (October 3). The idea ofyoung students who belong to anentirely new generation makingpresentations to their own teach-ers is good even though one maynot like to call it 'mentoring' sinceit is too exalted a term,a 'mentor'being defined by the Oxford Dic-tionary as "an experienced personwho advises you over a period oftime".

    What has been discussed in thearticle is in fact a reciprocal learn-ing with the students who areexposed to a whole lot of newtechniques and ideas in the ever-expanding vista of knowledge,passing these on to their olderteachers who have not had suchopportunities to get to know themin their student-days.

    It has been seen even in doctoralresearch that the present-day stu-dents who want to do a PhD thesishave a thing or two up theirsleeves to supplement what their

    Flexibility is a boonIn your article 'An elastic affair,' lastweek in Knowledge, I really appre-ciate you outlining the main fea-ture of a flexible system asopposed to a rigid one.I do knowthat many students take advan-tage of the situation and try totwist the system to their advan-tage, but the authorities shouldnot let all the students suffer forthat.

    I am working full time,and alsotaking take of domestic responsi-bility and really appreciate the

    flexibility offered to me by some ofmy faculty.They allow a certaindelay in submission of assign-ments for the class as a whole, ifthere is a unanimous decision, onthe condition that the perform-ance will be really above all stan-dards. And sure, students deliver.After all the purpose of educationis to acquire knowledge andunderstanding, not beingthrust upon with unnecessarydeadlines.

    Prior research helpsI agree completely with your arti-cle 'Do your homework,' since Ihave been through the experiencemyself. I had made the exact mis-take you described in the initialpart where I was well preparedwith my subject matter but wasweak on my knowledge about the

    company. I failed to answer ques-tions about being part of the spe-cific team I was interviewing for,since I had no clue of the team orits projects.In fact, to my dismay, Ihadn't even prepared any ques-tions to ask the interviewer in caseI got the job.It was a grave mis-take and cost me the job. Ofcourse, I bettered my act after that,and made sure that I wsa well pre-pared for the interview from allaspects.     EuroSchool Airoli celebrated World Animal day on October4, 2011 as a mark of love and respect towards animals. It wasa two week long activity for the children where in they hadan intense study of the diverse forms of animals.     N L Dalmia Institute of Management Studies and Researchorganised its annual HR seminar 'Manusandhan' 2011 withthe theme 'Leadership Development in an organisation -HR Challenges and Possibilities'.     Social media is changing the

    way institutions think, respondand act. Often there has been

    discussion as to what exactly issocial media and how it can be usedeffectively within the educationalsystem.Social media in this contextare online tools and platform whichcan be effectively used by institu-tions to network, connect, share,teach and inform. This includesblogs, podcasts, wiki, newsfeeds,social networking platforms likefacebook, Twitter, LinkedIn,

    YouTube, among others.

    Usage of social mediaSocial media can interestingly be

    used by any institution be it govern-ment aided, private or autonomousas an academic as well as non-aca-demic tool. Some examples includecreating an impression (brandingand marketing), information dis-

    semination to the industry and stu-dents, instant communication withstudents, peers and the industry,learning and teaching resource

    within a classroom or even a remoteenvironment, networking withinpeer groups, effective content shar-ing and storage, faculty recruitment,sponsorships, fund raising, etc.

    Changing with the timesOur young generation is a set of

    quick minds and deft fingers. Theycan learn new things within no timeand can use newer applicationsalmost instantly. In fact, many atimes, there is a situation of rolereversal wherein the students intro-duce or 'teach' the professors andeducators how to effectively usesocial media. 'Speaking' their lan-guage engages the students andensures that educators are kept up

    with the times in this fast changingenvironment.Very often educators look down

    upon social networking sites likeface book, twitter, orkut etc. As edu-cators, we need to understand thathiding our youth away from suchmediums or shunning them willnot help us in strengthening theirmoral fiber, but giving them thefreedom to explore and having faithin them would help us in strength-ening not only their knowledge but

    their value base as well. Both edu-cators and students must be life-long learners to meet the chal-lenges of ever changing mindscapeof the gen next.

    School and college students rulethe roost in social media - facebook,twitter and blogging. With handhelddevices connected to social media itgives students and teachers an any-time, anywhere communicationand learning platform.

    Examples of usageInstitutions today can effectively

    communicate to students /colleagues via social mediaand email. Notifications,notices, meetings are calledthrough the same. Twitter is a140 character based social mediaplatform that anyone can subscribeto. An institution can effectivelycommunicate to 'subscribers' (whocould be teachers and students ofthe institution or even a particularclass) that the some topical lecturehas been cancelled through Twitter

    YouTube has recently launched anonline 'channel' or site dedicated tothe teaching fraternity with engag-ing clips and short educationalvideos which can be used within aclassroom environment. The 'chan-nel' chr istened 'YouTube Teachers'-learn, teach-share can be used as aresource as well as a sharing tool

    wherein students or teachers canupload videos created by them onthis platform.

    Flickr is effectively used to sharestill images and could be a greatvisual resource within the classroom.

    Why use social media?Social media is a great tool forresearch, project and assignmentcreation, case studies, connecting

    with the industry and showcasingmilestones a student or teacher hasachieved within the learning-teach-ing processes.

    Moreover, most social media plat-forms are free, contain engagingcontent, help cuts down on isola-tion as one is always connected to a

    fellow student, teacher or institu-tion, provide uniformity andencourage innovation and sharingand amplify lifelong passion forlearning.

    My father who is now 76 (and hadnever operated a computer in his liferather was averse to it) , was keen toknow the basics of email - now with-in a period of 3 months he is adeptand might I say an expert in e- mailand logs onto Facebook daily !.

    Educational institutions, educa-tors and students need to move

    with the times and adapt technolo-gy and social media as being a partof their lives. Though social mediahas its disadvantages, if used effi-ciently in a controlled environmentand an informed manner, it can be

    a great boon to an institution and itsstudents. Social media is beingextensively used in some other partsof the world like US towards teach-ing and communication processes

    within an institution. The use inIndia is till today limited as a teach-ing learning tool. It is high time wecatch up with the rest of the world!!
