Are you a LEADER?Yes or No? Ask to yourself.
Why?Why you conclude “Yes” or “No”? Any reason?
Try to find out qualities of a leader from your conception and own understanding!
Just think….and write down one by one.
Reason behind “Yes” or “No”, are based on some
Qualities! Correct?
Qualities of a LEADER?
Some conclusion about leaders (as per our concept)-• Lead a team• Honest• Sincere• Self-confident • Energetic (high activity level) • Dependable• Adaptable to situations• Ambitious and achievement orientated • Assertive• Cooperative• Decisive• Persistent • Tolerant of stress• Alert to social environment• Dominant (desire to influence others)• Willing to assume responsibility
What you need to become a leader?
A Question. Is it possible to have all these qualities in a single person?
The Answer:Most logically, except extra ordinary leaders, most probably “No”.
But still we get leaders in every field, in every situation!
What you need to become a leader?
Know yourself Have some vision Communicate that vision to colleagues Build trust among colleagues Take effective action to achieve your own potential
Extract from definition of leadership by Prof. Warren Bennis.Warren Gamaliel Bennis is an American scholar, organizational consultant and author, widely regarded as a pioneer of the contemporary field of Leadership studies.
Early theories:
Leaders are • Exceptional people, • Born with innate (natural) qualities, • Destined to lead by trait
Leadership Theory
Theories of 1960s:
Behaviourist Theories:Leaders behaviour and actions are most important than their traits and skills.
Different leadership behaviours categorised as ‘leadership styles’ as• Autocratic, • Delegative, • Bureaucratic Managing People• Democratic
Leadership Theory
Autocratic Delegative
Bureaucratic Democratic
Theories of 1970s:
Functional Theories:Leader is concerned with the interaction of 3 areas:Task – goal setting, methods and processTeam – effective interaction/communication, clarify roles, team moraleIndividual –attention to behaviour, feelings, coaching
Leadership Theory

Basic Concept of Motivation
Need Hierarchy Theory:
As per Dr. Maslow, human motivation has 5 levels.Human wants to satisfy his needs one by one from bottom to top of the pyramid. To motivate one individual, leader needs to understand the present need level of the individual. If the leader can understand the present need level of the individual, then leader can motivate the individual by satisfying his need, if possible.
New Leadership Theory:
Transformational Theory:• Leaders inspire individuals, build up trust, and promote creativity and personal growth
• Individuals develop a sense of purpose to help the group, organisation or society. This goes beyond their own self-interests, rewards or recognition for effort or devotion.
Leadership Theory
Leading from the middle:
For a team it is not desirable to have limited leaders. It is important to have multiple leaders in every level, in every sub groups and in every work. It is important that every individual of the team has to be encouraged to become a leader at individual level.Organizations rise and fall on the qualities and activities of their leadership at every level. Successful organizations cannot wait until someone gets to the top to start leading. Organizations need leaders in the middle level, who create values through out the organization.
An Interesting Concept:
CONVENTIONAL LEADERSHIP
