“He’s leaps and bounds different from when I fi rst met him,” says Rudder. “Socially is where he’s made some of the highest gains.”

ABA is consideredone of the most effective evidence-based therapeuticapproaches to treating children with autism, yet the Surrey School District is the only district in B.C. that has dedicated ABA support workers and offers training certifi cation through its adult education arm, Surrey College.

“ABA is an evidence-based approach to teaching children with autism. The district supports this and parents have thechoice of whether or not they wish to ask for this service,” says Cory McLaughlin, District Principal in Education Services.

Autism is on the rise and the Surrey School District is leading the way in accommodating the needs of children with autism spectrum disorders. Students in the ABA support worker program at Surrey College must have 500 documented hours of home-based ABA experience under an ABA consultant prior to entering the program, and another 500 hours before they can achieve their ABA certifi cation to work in the school system.

“It’s a behavioural and academic program based on data collection and the observation of children,” explains McLaughlin.

Robins, who chairs the district ABA Advisory Committee, credits ABA for giving her son his life back and revealing him to be not just a boy with autism, but an artist, a conversationalist and a well-mannered teen who always holds the door for people at the grocery store.

“I can’t imagine what our lives would be like without ABA,” says Robins.

For his part, Rudder’s biggest reward is seeing Nic succeed.“Yes, my job is awesome.”For more information, contact the District ABA Advisory

Committee at [email protected].

Technology ‘flattens’ classroom at Green TimbersTechnology ‘flattens’ classroom at Green TimbersThe world isn’t flat, but technology is making classrooms that way.Teacher Robyn Thiessen’s Grade 3/4 class at Green Timbers Elementary is one of 23 classrooms around the world

participating in a “Flat Classroom” project to explore through discussion, sharing and multi-media what life is like in different parts of the world.“We’re absolutely thrilled to

To students, Joe Vizvary is a teacher. To their parents and others of a generation who grew up in the 1980s, he’s the keyboardist for Images In Vogue.Vizvary, 55, teaches several music courses plus English at Princess Margaret Secondary. But before he was a teacher, he was the brooding keyboard player for the modern electronica band that filled Canadian airwaves and beyond for an entire decade.“It’s been an interesting and weird journey to get here,” confides Vizvary, surrounded by old music posters in his classroom at PM.Images In Vogue was born on April 29, 1981 and by Sept. 26 of that same year had a demo tape and its first live performance. A deal with record company WEA Canada (now Warner Music Canada) followed and the band soon recorded its first hit

single, Lust for Love, and was enjoying the popularity that came from touring with Roxy Music, Depeche Mode, Bryan Adams and Duran Duran. Images in Vogue eventually split from WEA and moved to Toronto in search of another record and management company, but ultimately the story went like Bryan Adams’ Summer of ’69 and members all went their separate ways.Today, instead of screaming teenage fans, it’s students of the Surrey School District who benefit from Vizvary’s experience and musical talents. Vintage posters and memorabilia in the corner of his classroom remind students that if Vizvary, who came to Canada as a refugee from Hungary when he was a baby, can make a dream come true, they can, too.“I didn’t just randomly hope

to become a musician. I had a set of goals that I had to accomplish,” says Vizvary, “and I had to work very hard.”Vizvary joined the teaching staff at Princess Margaret in 1998. In addition to English, he teaches music composition and technology, keyboards, electronic music, band and video production. He also started a DJ club for students and he and colleague Peter Nikkel, who teaches the guitar and singer/songwriter programs at PM, built a recording studio in the music room. Nikkel started the

school’s modern music program in 1998 while Vizvary started the keyboard program in 2002 and the video program in 1999.“Everybody deserves music in their life,” says Vizvary. “It’s one of life’s great joys.”

Isha Gill explores the concept of a flat classroom using Edmodo and other Web 2.0 tools.

have this opportunity to connect and collaborate with children around the world, to share the similarities between our cultures and to ultimately discover and appreciate how much we all have in common,” says Thiessen.Inspired by Thomas Friedman’s book, The World is Flat, the Flat Classroom was co-founded in 2006 by educators American Vicki Davis and Australian Julie Lindsay. It’s an award-winning global collaborative project that leverages online tools to foster communication and interaction between students and teachers from classrooms around the world. Green Timbers students are among 785 students from six countries taking part in the “A Week in the Life” project, which started in September and runs until December. Using online tools such as wikis, blogs, Skype and other interactive web applications, students will work in teams from different schools and use technology to connect, communicate and collaborate as they exchange information about a week in their own lives.Thiessen’s students have been

assigned to different teams alongside students from Hong Kong, China, Brazil, Yugoslavia and the U.S. Using Edmodo’s social learning network tools, students are learning how their counterparts in other countries go to school, where they live, how they get around, what kind of food they eat, what they celebrate, what they wear, what languages they speak, what they do for fun and what their environment is like. The Flat Classroom project is something her students will remember well into their teen years, says Thiessen, and perhaps even their adult lives; it will help inform their perspective on everything from social issues to current events.“The lessons are invaluable. By ‘flattening the classroom,’ we’re strengthening the bonds and connections we have with each other and by extension our care and compassion for people who are just like us but who happen to live somewhere else.”The project’s objective is to demonstrate that children are the same, regardless of where they live in the world.

Future Shop donates photography equipment

Future Shop donated more than $60,000 worth of photography and computer equipment to the Surrey School District in July. The equipment was used to run an innovative summer school photography program putting student photo correspondents in the middle of the BC Summer Games. The 27 registered students, along with 23 adult volunteers, generated more than 90,000 pictures documenting the Games. The students were each equipped with a Nikon SLR camera, batteries, memory cards and an advanced computer station to download and transmit their photos. They received world-class instruction from Sullivan Heights art teacher Marc Pelech and Surrey Leader photographer Evan Seal in the Games’ high-tech media hub located inside Sullivan Heights.

“This course was the first opportunity for many of the 27 participating high school students to handle professional camera and computer equipment,” says Pelech.

Students qualified 13 of 26 images that were selected for display at the Surrey 2012 BC Summer Games photography exhibition at the Newton Cultural Centre in September. Two students, Michelle Wong and Michael Hall, won $100 awards for their photos at this exhibit.

The cameras and equipment donated by Future Shop have been shared among several schools in the district and will be used for years to come in media arts classes.

The eyes have it!Things are

looking up for 15 Surrey students who attended a vision clinic at Colebrook Elementary in October. Each student spent two hours at the clinic, which was put on by the Children’s Low Vision Project and hosted by Surrey’s vision teachers.

Students were assessed by an ophthalmologist and an optometrist as well as professionals trained in orientation, mobility and assistive technology.

Students who required them were then given any optical aids available from the clinic, such as magnifying glasses, or were prescribed additional optical aids specific to their vision needs. The clinic’s professionals also made recommendations to support the student, his or her family, teachers and the school.

Breakfast for Learning puts money where student mouths are

Breakfast for Learning has donated $25,400 to 23 schools in the Surrey School District. Funds provide food to students who would otherwise go through the day hungry, making it difficult for them to concentrate on classroom work.

Community-Schools Partnership awarded for social innovation

And the award for social innovation goes to… the Surrey School District.

The district’s Sticks and Stars program won the 2012 TELUS Award for Social Innovation on Oct. 3. An initiative of the Community-Schools Partnership, Sticks and Stars gives at-risk boys the opportunity to learn about and explore the wonders of space, sport and science while avoiding the temptations of gang activity.

Thanks to its engaging curriculum, inspiring guest speakers and positive male role models, this pilot

project has transformed the lives of 40 vulnerable youngsters. The TELUS award comes with a $5,000 contribution to the program, allowing Sticks and Stars to grow and reach many more children in the years go come.

The award was given out during the fifth annual TELUS Celebration of Giving and was chosen among more than 70 applications.

Sticks and Stars operated at Cougar Creek and W.E. Kinvig elementaries in 2011-2012 and will expand to additional schools in 2012-2013.

‘A Day Made Better’ for Surrey Schools teacher

Serpentine Heights teacher Sandra Roberto received an unexpected surprise when Grand & Toy Associates showed up at her school to present her with a recognition award and a prize package worth $1,500 that included school supplies and a new ergonomic chair.

The award was the result of a compelling nomination letter submitted by Serpentine Heights parent Tara Chalmers to Grand & Toy’s “A Day Made Better” contest, which recognizes commitment and dedication to teaching.

“A Day Made Better is an initiative that Grand & Toy created to recognize exceptional teachers, the unsung heroes who go above and beyond,” says Cam Negrich, Grand & Toy district sales manager. “Ms. Roberto is one of 18 teachers across Canada chosen to receive this recognition award for her hard work and dedication as a teacher.”

Michelle Wong won a $100 prize for her photo depicting the relationship between coach and player

during the BC Summer Games.

If Surrey teacher Jonathan Rempel had a mantra, it would be “no student left behind.”

Winner of a 2012 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, Rempel teaches at the North Surrey Learning Centre, where he developed the Learning Adventure Co-op to inspire a sense of community in his students. The sense of community transferred back into the classroom and students now go to each other for help.

As the aboriginal teacher advocate, Rempel works with the approximately 70 aboriginal students in the school. His mandate is to increase graduation rates and overall academic success, but his reach is much further; he helps teachers and students integrate aboriginal content into lessons and does whatever it takes to identify needs and support students, conducting home visits when necessary and connecting with parents and students outside the classroom walls.

The 2012 Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence were presented in Ottawa to 94 recipients on World Teachers’ Day Oct. 5 to honour outstanding elementary and secondary teachers who, through the innovative use of information and communications technologies in the classroom, help students develop the knowledge and skills to succeed in the

A Message from your DPACSadly most of us have the seen the news over

the past month. We have seen the worst case result of someone who was bullied. Even though many knew her story, they were helpless to stop her from taking such a tragic step. Now many are left wondering what could have been done to change the outcome.

Many times the people involved have no idea of the impact they may have had. You hear things like “they knew I was just teasing” or “I didn’t do anything, I was just watching” or “can’t they take a joke?” Far too often we do not even realize that our comments or actions can be offensive to

someone else. Then there are those who know exactly what they are doing, and choose to make someone else’s life difficult.

Social media has now added a whole new dynamic to bullying. Kids used to be able to go home to escape the torment. Now it can follow them home, to a new school, or even a new city. It has become far too easy to simply make a comment without even considering the impact that one little comment can have, or how far-reaching it can be.

Bullying is not something that is new to anyone, but it definitely has taken on some new aspects

in the past few years. The Surrey School District has employed many strategies to address all those involved in bullying. The bullying circle does not just include the bully and the bullied, but also many others including the bystander and the cheerleader. In today’s society we now need to add the recorder, the social media poster and so much more.

Most children in schools today will likely face some level of bullying. As parents we need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of this. We must also watch for signs that our children are not the bullies or other participants in the bully circle. We must work with the education partners to teach our children how to respond when they are feeling bullied or need assistance. We must also all be aware of the things we are doing and assure that they are not contributing to bullying in some way.

The DPAC and Superintendent’s office have been working collaboratively on a parent handbook focused on bullying. It will include the steps to follow when you are concerned, some of the things you may expect when bullying occurs in the school and some valuable resources you can access.

As this topic is so vast the DPAC has felt it relevant to devote both the January and February DPAC meetings to this topic. We will have a number of district staff and community resources available to provide information on some of the important information every parent should know about bullying.

Parents need to be aware that their children can be suspended for being a bystander, striking back at a bully or being involved in events that occur off the school grounds – like cyber bullying. You must also watch some of the trends that are emerging – loss of scholarships when donors review social media posts made by students and now litigation based solely on social media. We invite all parents to come out and engage in these sessions. They will be held on Jan. 23 and Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at the District Education Centre.
