KNO-WIN Operating Instructions KNO-WIN is a program for evaluating and presenting data from traffic surveys. The data can be imported from the hc8 Programmer (program to manage and read from the hc8®, hc8/45® and hc8/36® counting devices) or from KNO-DOS (previous DOS version). KNO-WIN has at least the range of functions included in the DOS version. Advantages compared to the DOS version are:

Intuitive user interface. Lanes, graphs and flow diagrams are shown in colour. Changes can be seen at once in the graphics. Flow diagrams can be rotated in all positions and the angle between streets

freely selected. Numerous data manipulation options. Wide range of design options for printouts. Easy-to-use search menu Conversion of a crossroads into a round-about

1. Installation

To install KNO-WIN proceed as follows:

Close all programs Insert installation CD into your CD-Drive Select CD-Drive in Explorer Open folder KNO-WIN on installation CD Run KNOx_xx.EXE with a double click. Set your destination drive and path with Browse, if necessary Start installation with Install button.

1.1. Update If the installed version, is an update of an earlier KNO-WIN version, we recommend that both versions are kept in parallel on the hard disk for some time. The later version will automatically be installed in a folder of its own. To process data of earlier versions usually requires to import the data with the new version. Changing of the path name and copying with the Explorer is not sufficient, when the data base structure of the new KNO-WIN version has been expanded. However, heading files (Knohead.dbf) and 24 hours extrapolation factors (Knohofa.dbf) may be copied.

4. Project

A project combines all data and parameters of one or more count sites. Every Project is stored in files of its own. These files take the name of the project and are held in a directory specified in data directory (Default is VZDATA). A Click on the column header in the project file display will change the direction of the sort. The sequence of columns and their width in the site display can be adjusted using the mouse. 4.1. Create a New Project Click on New Project to create a new, empty project and open the fields project file, date and project name for input. Automatically, a new site by the name of Kxxxxxx_xx will be created. It can subsequently be renamed or deleted. This way of proceeding makes sense for manual data input. As a rule projects are imported.

4.2. Import Create a new project with Import and import the data of the associated count sites. The data may have been exported by „hc8-Programmer“ or may be taken from already existing files of KNO-DOS or KNO-WIN. Specify the source directory in the „KNO database Import“ dialogue and open the file to be imported with a double click. Subsequently, a new entry will appear in the project file list. hc8-Programmer exports counting data in a directory structure of its own ( ..\ExportDirectory\Project\Site\*.txd ). It is sufficient, to click on one of the txd-files for KNO-WIN to load all counting data linked with the project. To import more than one file from KNO-DOS or KNO-WIN at a time, select several pn*.dbf files using CNTRL or SHIFT key in combination with the mouse. Also bear in mind, the special programme settings as described in 10. Settings. 4.3. ADD This menu item – unlike Import – does not create a new project. In contrast, it adds sites to a previously selected project.

5. Parameter

Menu item Parameter contains several sub menus for associating additional information with the sites of a project. 5.1. Site Parameters Select menu item Parameter → Site parameter A time bloc can always be divided into segments and segments can always be combined. In both cases, the number of blocs has to be set accordingly. Site, date, duration and number of blocs are taken from the import files.

Choose a heading file from this selection to assign it to a selected site.

Page 9

The entry numbers of streets (1 = above, 2 = right, 3 = below, 4 = left) are automatically converted into a site layout. Subsequent amendment of these 4 numbers also produces an immediate change in the site layout – and thus also in the site diagram derived from this. The flow diagrams can be adapted to the real site by selecting the street angles. As a check, the flow diagram should be monitored because, due to the freedom allowed in choosing the angles for the entries, nonsensical representations are possible. 5.1.1. Delete Site

Select the site to be deleted from the site display. It will appear in the Site field. Click on Delete. Also confirm the security check „Delete data too“

5.1.2. Create Site The new site is created in the project file specified in the start screen.

Click on *New and confirm. Enter a site name of your choice in field Site. Fill in input fields (e.g. place, weather, street etc.)

5.1.3. Rename Site

Select the site from the site display. Enter the new name in the site field. Confirm the name specified with the tab key or a mouse click in any field. Confirm the enquiry “rename data too”

5.1.4. Copy Site into another project file

Select site to be copied in the site display. This appears in the Site field. Click on Copy. Return to the start screen with End. Select the target project. Select menu Parameter → Site parameter. Click on Paste. The copied file now appears in the Site display window.

Page 10

5.2. Site layout Select menu item Parameter → Site layout Lanes cannot be inserted unless site arms exist for them. Site arms can be added and deleted in menu item Parameter → Site parameter. It is not reasonable to add lanes for which there is no survey data. This is shown by an error message. If lanes are removed, the error message: "Lane has data, but no parameters.“ appears when the flow diagram is called up. This error message can be switched off. Changes made here only affect the flow diagrams and graphs, not the listings.

This function displays all lanes for which data exist. Use this function, after lanes have been deleted or renamed or have been newly calculate in menu data manipulation. 5.2.1. Convert a crossroads into a roundabout A crossroads can be calculated as a roundabout and be stored as an individual site.

Select the crossroads to be converted into a roundabout from the site display.

Enter a site name for the roundabout in field Site (here191100Kr). Press button create roundabout Confirm the enquiry “calculate roundabout ?“ with yes.

The result of the conversion is displayed as seen below: Listings, graphs and flow charts of the newly created roundabout can be created in the same way as for any other sites. Please note, a 4-armed crossroads can be converted into a roundabout but not vice versa.

5.2.2. Naming of lanes in a roundabout (Left hand side traffic) Since the lane numbers of a crossroads are inappropriate for a roundabout, the lane names below will be used for the roundabout:

Examples: 4R: Traffic of site arm 4 flowing into the roundabout R4: Traffic of roundabout flowing into site arm 4 K4: Passing traffic in segment K4 of the roundabout 5.2.3. Naming of lanes in a roundabout (Right hand side traffic) Since the lane numbers of a crossroads are inappropriate for a roundabout, the lane names below will be used for the roundabout:

Examples: 4R: Traffic of site arm 4 flowing into the roundabout R4: Traffic of roundabout flowing into site arm 4 K4: Passing traffic in segment K4 of the roundabout

2R + K2 = R3 + K3

1R + K1 = R2 + K2 4R + K4 = R1 + K1

3R + K3 = R4 + K4

3R + K3 = R2 + K2

2R + K2 = R1 + K1

1R + K1 = R4 + K4

Page 13

5.2.4. Counting a Roundabout When counting a roundabout, only 2 lanes (R? or K? or ?R or K?) have to be counted at each arm. The third lane can be calculated from the two existing ones. The lanes counted at each arm should be identical, as the calculation of the missing lanes can become very complex otherwise. The calculations can be carried out in menu data manipulation → calculation of lane. Example: Normally, lanes 3R and K3 are being counted. Lane R3 is calculated in this way: R3=4R+K4-K3. However, if lanes R3 and K3 have been counted, lane 3R is calculated like this: 3R=R2+K2-K3. Calculation of the 4-arm-roundabout: Calculation of the 3-arm-roundabout: R1 = 2R + K2 - K1 1R = R4 + K4 – K1 R1 = 2R + K2 - K1 1R = R3 + K3 – K1 R2 = 3R + K3 - K2 or 2R = R1 + K1 – K2 R2 = 3R + K3 - K2 or 2R = R1 + K1 – K2 R3 = 4R + K4 - K3 3R = R2 + K2 – K3 R3 = 1R + K1 - K3 3R = R2 + K2 – K3 R4 = 1R + K1 - K4 4R = R3 + K3 – K4 Converting a 3-arm roundabout into a crossroads: 12 = K3 23 = K1 13 = 1R – K3 31 = K2 21 = 2R – K1 32 = 3R – K2

Page 14

5.3. 24 Hour Factors In menu item Parameter → 24 h factors lane related 24 h extrapolation factors can be assigned to sites. In table 24 h factors, parameters are defined for cumulative fields and vehicle types, that are stored together under a three character name. They are generally available throughout KNO-WIN for different counts and can be referred to by their name. New 24 h factors may be added by pressing the Insert key, and selected ones can be removed by pressing the delete button. The matrix of 24 h factors is only valid for the selected site. Here, individual lanes of that site are assigned 24 h factors of the table above. A selected extrapolation factor from the table is inserted into the matrix by a double clicking into a matrix field.

These are the 24 h factors of the lanes in the example above (site 091100Kr) : Lanes Name of 24 h factors 11, 12, 13,14, S1 41, 42 S2 all others SUC (due to default)

Double click on a extrapolation factor in the table to set it as the default. Empty fields in the matrix are given the default extrapolation factor.

As long as you do not leave screen of the 24 h factors, all matrix fields can be reset to their original state with Undo.

The extrapolation factor laid down in the basic setting of set default is the default when importing a new site.

With Import, 24 h factors of earlier KNO-WIN versions can be adopted.

With „begin" and „end", the time interval can be specified, in which counts are usually held. Only data of this interval will be used in the extrapolation. Data gathered outside this interval will be ignored.

5.3.1. Define new 24 h factors and assign to lanes General:

Add an empty row to the table by pressing the Insert key. Enter the new parameters for the various vehicle types. Enter a name in the Name field. Maximum length is 3 characters. Define the time intervals, from which the data will be extrapolated with this 24 h

factor Individually for every site :

Assign a extrapolation factor to a specific lane by entering (edit or use double click) the name of the parameter into the corresponding matrix field.

Set the default for empty matrix fields (edit or use double click).

Page 16

5.4. Pedestrian Count Pedestrian counts are not considered the usual case and do not fit into the standard evaluation of traffic flows. Menu Item Parameter → Pedestrian count provides the opportunity for an additional evaluation for a part of the lanes and classes. Example: In the case of a normal turning movement count, crossing pedestrians are counted on the unused keys. Several keys could be used for the pedestrian count, so that, for example, pedestrians can be grouped according to age and recorded with relation to the direction they travel in. The following items need to be entered here: SITE: Name of the site. LANE: The lane number in which you counted the pedestrians. KEY: The key of the hc8 counter (by column from top to bottom) on which the

pedestrians were recorded. PEDL: A short identifier. TEXT: Any commentary text required. This pedestrian count is evaluated by selecting the additional listing option Listing and graph – additional listing – pedestrian count. The pedestrian figures are output as a separate list here. To prevent the pedestrian figures appearing in the normal lists, the output of the corresponding class should be locked in the headings file. Another method is to assign lane numbers, for which no site arms are defined in the site parameters. Consequently, they will not appear in the site layout.

5.5. Headings file A heading serves to declare vehicle types, lay down cover sheet text and define various cumulated values. The user can create headings himself or delete existing ones. Furthermore, additional headings can be imported, for instance from earlier KNO-WIN versions. All headings are stored collectively in the headings file KNOHEAD.DBF. Before you can associate a site with a heading, the heading has to be included in the headings file. To edit headings refer to Parameter → headings.

In the heading, a short name can be associated with every vehicle type (Car, LGV, MGV,… in the example above), that will used as column header in all listings. In all evaluations, only vehicle types with a tick in line output will be listed. Three independent fields for a cumulated values may be defined, that will also appear in the listings. In the first field, enter the name of the cumulated value. In the columns to the right, enter the factor, with which the specified vehicle type is to be weighted. When all factors of the sum are set to 0, the sum will not be calculated and printed out. Cumulated values in the example above: Veh Everything apart from cycles is counted as Veh. (Bicycle = 0). HGV MGV, Bus, R2, R3, R4, A3, A4, A5and A6 are counted as HGV (heavy goods

vehicles). PCU P-Car-Units are assigned to every type of vehicle. Artics, for instance, have a

weighting factor of 3,5 PCU and buses have a factor of 2 PCU in relation to a car that has 1 PCU.

Percentage from line: The second cumulative field is also output in the listings as percentage of either the first or the third line. Enter the index number of the line which you want the second cumulated value to be a percentage of. In the example above, line 1 has been specified to calculate the proportion of heavy goods traffic in all vehicles. Define the column for the vehicle type bicycle, which is required for the additional evaluation of bicycle traffic in the flow diagram. Default setting: The heading selected in the default settings is the default for newly created sites.

In a "normal“ count with the hc8, a distinction is made between 6 classes of vehicle. One of these is cyclists. However, the normal evaluation, except in the listing (compressed) does not take these into account. In particular, no flow diagrams for cycle traffic can be put together as standard. The program offers the option of a separate evaluation for cycle traffic. The settings hour, survey time, peak-time and total are ignored in a count of cyclists.

Rad1: Number of cyclists in the 1st survey bloc time. (Peak-time1): Number of cyclists in peak-time of 1st bloc PCL2: Number of cyclists in the 2nd bloc (Peak-time 2): Number of cyclists in peak-time of 2nd bloc

Tick option selection, so that you can filter out a specific set of records from all survey data by specifying a site, date, lane and survey interval in the corresponding input fields. If activated, all records matching the filter definition of the input fields site, lane und survey interval will be retrieved and displayed in the list. A -> B one lane: only the set lane is displayed All lanes: All lanes of the selected site are displayed. 8.1.2. Manual correction of survey data Values of the list can be edited directly. Any changes to the data will be accepted only on leaving the menu after explicit confirmation by the user. While changing data of the current record, changes can be reversed by pressing the ESC key. 8.1.3. Manual input of survey data Example: Due to a lack of counting devices, a lane was logged conventionally by tally sheet. The 15 minute intervals were observed in this. This lane now needs to be integrated into the file manually.

Page 41

8.2. Calculation of Lane In menu data manipulation → calculation of lane, lanes can be calculated by addition or subtraction of other lanes. This is useful for roundabouts or when surveys are conducted at several connected sites. There is the further option to inflate or deflate a lane’s data by a set rate. In this case, every single value of the lane concerned will be multiplied with a factor, specifically defined for the purpose, and then be rounded. Up to eights sites can be included in the calculation that must all be included in the current project file. If data is required from sites of other projects, they have to be copied to the current project file first. In any case, it is advisable to copy all sites that are part of a survey into a project of their own and to do all calculation there. In case of error, the original data can always be referred to.

Page 42

Example: Calculation of a lane not counted as the sum/difference of counted lanes In order to save on a counting device, lane 32 at site 201601 has not been counted. If it can be assumed that there are no further junctions between sites 191100 and 201601 and that no further vehicles can "go missing" on this route, lane 32 can be calculated from the other lanes. In this case, lane 32 of site 201601 is the sum of lanes 12, 32 and 42 of site 191100 minus lane 31 of site 201601. For the calculation, input is requires as shown in the screenshot on the previous page. Site: 191100 201601 Please note, the calculation of lanes can produce unlikely results due to counting errors. Negative values, especially, are conspicuous. They arise easily for vehicle classes with a low proportion in traffic. Example: By mistake, the person counting at site 19100 enters one of 3 truck trailers of a survey interval as a Bus. All 3 truck trailers turn off to lane 31 and are recorded correctly. As a result, a negative value for truck trailer (2 - 3= -1) will be calculated for lane 32.

Press A → B Fill in input fields A, A1 and B, or use the filter settings Change name of site or lane in field B to the new name Press Execute Confirm rename Change the site layout in menu Parameter → site layout accordingly

Example: Lane 32 of site 191100 Is renamed to lane 34 Lane 32 has to be removed and lane 34 has to added in menu Parameter → site layout, otherwise the renamed lane will not appear in the flow diagram. 8.3.2. Swap Sites or Lanes For the subsequent swapping of lanes, that have been mixed up, proceed like this:

Press A ↔ B Fill in input fields A, A1 and B, or use the filter settings Press Execute Confirm swap

8.3.3. Manipulate Count Times In case of errors during programming or reading out the counting devices (for instance, internal clock of computer is set incorrectly), the data can be corrected in this way:

Press <A, A1> ± C Fill in input fields A, A1 or use the filter settings Enter a signed value (minutes) for the shift in field C Press Execute Confirm time shift

Example: All intervals of site 191100 are brought backward by an hour 8.4. Delete In Menu data manipulation → delete data can be deleted. You can delete individual sites, lanes or only certain count times, the whole project or duplicate records.

8.4.2. Delete duplicate records Delete duplicate records is required if survey data has been entered twice or more times in the database (e.g. due to multiple read-ins). The complete file is scrutinised to find any duplicate records for the same site, lane, survey time and time. If duplicate records are found, the first record is retained but the next deleted. In the case of multiple duplicate records, delete duplicate records must be repeated until the number of data sets stays the same. No check is made into whether the survey values are identical because, in certain circumstances, manual inputs could create records without values, which would then lead to errors when listings are compiled.

Press Delete duplicate records Fill in the site, lane or the count interval (fields from, to) to be deleted or use the

filter settings. Press Execute Confirm security check with yes.

8.4.3. Delete Project All counting data of the current project will be deleted. You have a choice, whether to delete the parameters of the project at the same time.

Press delete. Press execute. Answer the question, whether to delete only the data or all parameters as well

9. Search

KNO-WIN offers a special search feature, that helps to find a particular count in the whole of the database. For this purpose, KNO-WIN maintains all relevant information of individual counts in a separate database. To find a count, only a part of the site or street name or a time period have to be specified. KNO-WIN will find and show all count sites, that agree with these specifications. Double clicking on the wanted site will select it instantly. The search database has to be build once. For this purpose directories have to specified in Add directory. From time to time, the search database has to be updated. Start the search by pressing search. Define one or more restrictions for the data (search filter), that have to be all complied with in the search (logical AND operation). The result can be sorted by site or by date. To show all counts again, the search filter has be deactivated. Above, the result of a search with these filter settings is shown:

"0002" is part of the site name one of the street names must contain this combination of letters: "sch" only counts of the year 1999 should be included in the search.

Default to compressed graph (90°): Compressed graph (cf. flow diagram) is set as default

Left hand traffic (GB): Flow diagrams show traffic driving on the left

Confirm data saving in data manipulation: On leaving menu data manipulation, the program inquires whether changes made to the data should be saved or rejected.

Show <Create table for each site> dialog when importing On import, the program inquires, whether imported sites should be stored as single projects.

Show <Exchange streets 1 and 3> dialog when importing On import, the program inquires, whether streets 1 and 3 should be changed in sequence. This is reasonable for the import of KNO-DOS files.

11. Possible errors and how to deal with them

11.1. Automatic data check On leaving data manipulation or when executing function check data, all data and parameters of a project will be checked. The following errors will be detected: U = No or non-existing heading selected

Site has been assigned no or non-existing heading. Solution: Go to menu Parameter → headings and make sure, that the required headings exists. In field headings of menu Parameter → site parameter select the required file to assign it to the site.

H = Non-existing 24h factors have been set

All or some of the lanes have been assigned non-existing 24 h factors. Solution: Use only 24 h factors defined in menu Parameter → 24 h factors as default or in the matrix, respectively.

D = Lane has parameters, but no data

No data exists for a lane input in the site layout of menu Parameter → site layout. Solution: Delete the respective lane in Parameter → site layout or else enter count data manually or execute function all exiting lanes.

D = counting data outside the range of counting intervals

More records (intervals) have been entered as specified in Parameter → site parameter. Solution: Correct bloc start and end time or number of blocs in Parameter → site parameter

P = Lane has data, but no parameter Data exists for a lane that is has not been entered in the site layout. Solution: Enter lane in matrix of menu Parameter → site layout or execute all exiting lanes to generate it automatically.

B = Data missing from 0:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.

Missing data for some of the intervals, entered as bloc times. Solution: Correct bloc times in menu Parameter → site parameter or enter missing time intervals manually.

11.2. System Error Messages This error message appears after starting KNO-WIN:

An attempt has been made to open KNO-WIN in another window, or another running program requires the Borland Database Engine, for instance FLU-WIN, KNO-Text_Editor. Solution: Close all other programs before opening KNO-WIN. 11.3. Errors in Flow Diagrams All graphs are printed in black and white although output has been set to colour in menu Listing and graph → graph entry. Solution: Disable default print all graph b/w only in menu Program settings → settings. When editing flow diagrams, Standard graph (90°) is activated with every mouse click. Solution: Disable default Standard graph (90°) in menu program settings → settings.

Lanes are not properly represented and labelling overlaps.

Solution: (Option 1) Increase angle of site arm2

Solution: (Option 2) Switch off standard graph (90°).

12. Tips and Tricks

12.1. Counts spanning 2 days Counting, that took place in the afternoon and in the morning of the next day, should be evaluated as one count. For example 1.4.03 14:00 – 22:00 2.4.03 6:00 – 14:00 In hc8-Programmer, identical site names have been assigned with ParaDup. Due to the different dates, however, KNO-WIN will create two counts within the same project on import. Both counts should now be evaluated as one. Procedure The morning count is back dated to the previous date.

Change the date of the second count to the date of the first count in menu Parameter → site parameter (2.4.03 -> 1.4.03). Confirm inquiry „rename data as well“ with „Yes“.

Delete the first of the two sets of parameters. Answer inquiry „rename data as well“ with „no“.

Change number no. of periods to 2. Add missing block time

12.2. Defect counting device, resume count with reserve device The counting devices have been programmed for the same time interval. At first, certain lanes had been counted with a device that was taken out of service after breaking down. Counting had been resumed with a reserve device. The data of both devices should now be assembled. Procedure Delete the defect device in the hc8-Programmer. Read, edit and export the data of all other devices, inclusive of the reserve device, as usual. Create a new project (any name) in hc8-Programmer. Use identical counting method and times. Use this project to read out data from the defect device, enter names of lanes and site and export it.. Import both projects in KNO-WIN. In the project of the defective device, delete all data, recorded in the time the device was malfunctioning (data manipulation → delete). Change to original project and select menu item Add. Select file VZ*.dbf from the project of the defective device. Confirm inquiry „add to existing data“.
