CHAPLAINS REPORT
Brothers,
St. Valentine When we think of Valentine's Day, we think of
romance. However, how did it start? Who is St. Valentine?
St. Valentine of Rome was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. At that time, Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than married or engaged men, so he outlawed engagement and marriage for young couples. Realizing the injustice of this law, Valentine secretly married couples. He enjoyed helping them unite. As soon
as news about Valentine got to Claudius, Valentine was thrown in jail and was sentenced to death.
Many asked Claudius to free Valentine, but he refused.
He locked him up, and he died on February 14, 270.
So February is for lovers.
It is a wonderful month for us cold Canadians to warm our hearts.
Maybe that’s why St. Valentine day falls in this winter month of February.
We really do not know too much about this holy man Valentine. May of our ancient Christian practices have been passed on to us by word of mouth and custom.
What is important in all the stories of the saints – is not always what is historical in the telling of the story, but what is the message that this holy person passes on to me this day.
The red in Valentine is a symbol of passion, of blood and fire. If only we would allow God to fire us up for what is good and just. Lord, let your holy blood and passion change us into great lovers like you! Lord, You alone are my first Valentine!
Yours in Christ
Fr. Bill Kornacker
MISSION IN PERU From last months bulletin you’ll remember we
talked about the only hot breakfast of the week. Below are some pictures showing father Bill involved in this event.
Father Bill blessing the hot porridge and buns that the adults are preparing and the kids will get.
Father Bill helping one of the kids. This boy has a pail as he is also getting the meal for brothers and sisters.

The kids like to thank any groups who donate to the food by making up signs as you see here.

GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT
Brothers, Wow, where is the time going? More than half the fraternal year is done and we still have so much to do. We
have many events happening in the next few months and I will be recruiting volunteers, which is never a problem with all of the active members in this council willing to lend a hand.
I would first like to thank all the volunteers from some of our recent events. A special thank you to Brother Eli Betrand for helping to keep us organized in the kitchen for
Appreciation night and also to the rest of the Columbian Club executive who made that night a success. ………. New Years Eve, we had 400 people in our hall, the biggest crowd we have had in a long time. I would like to thank our barbequers for that night Brother Chris Bergeron and Ken, our cooks Jeanine Bissonnette & Janice Brockman, all of the serving staff and cleanup crew, the bartenders Harmony along with Dave & Theresa Gillan. A special thanks to Brother Gary Gardin & Chuck Roy for jumping in to help out. The band “24/40” who we hired for that evening made the event a great success, the dance floor was always full and everyone had a great time.
I would like to give a special thanks to Brother Murray Kirzinger who takes old unwanted computers, gets them in working order and then on behalf of the council donates them to St Vincent De Paul for distribution to a family in need. So brothers if you have any old, unwanted computers sitting in a closet collecting
dust please donate them to the council and Murray will take it from there. Thanks again Murray!!
Knight of the month for January is a true representation of what the Knights is all about. He is there whenever I ask for his help, he is a councilor in our Squires program, he is our basket bingo chairman, and he is also our recreation chairman. Join in congratulating our January Knight of the Month Brother Phil Lefrancois.
The Squires will be holding their annual Starve-a-Thon on Feb 10 & 11 starting right after the fish fry, please support these boys as they solicit donations which will all be donated to St. Vincent De Paul.
Two dates to keep open on your calendar, Feb 17 Chicken & Sliders Cost is $8, and February 25 Beach party $15. Both these events are great fundraisers for our council, be sure to come out and support them.
K of C car raffle tickets are now available. There is a new prize board this year, 7 vehicles, 5 trips (new this year) & 12 cash prizes (two $25000 prizes added).
If you wish to purchase ticket you can contact any member of the executive or tickets are available at the clubroom bar.
To keep our council vibrant we need new members with new ideas & enthusiasm. I encourage every Knight to recruit other Catholic gentleman to become Knights of Columbus
Fraternally Yours
Dave Taylor Grand Knight

COLUMBIAN CLUB REPORT
Brothers,
Things have been happening at a pretty good clip since my last report. After many years of being out of compliance with the electrical code, we have replaced and moved the two compressors in the mechanical room that service our beer cooler. They have been replaced with one new compressor on the roof. Also at the recommendation of the refrigeration contractor, we replaced one of the evaporators in the beer cooler. Everything is now new and fresh and should last for many years.
With the increases in our lunch business, we have been adding crock-pots for soup, gravies etc. resulting in
3
popped electrical breakers. A big thanks goes out to Brother John Graham for upgrading our circuits to bring us into compliance.
A big thanks also goes out to brothers Lyn Richardson and Girard Beaulieu for restoring many of our wheelchairs. We now have 9 wheelchairs that look like new. If any brothers know of someone that is in need of a wheelchair, give us a shout.
On December 12th and 19th we conducted "Smartserve" courses for all of our bartenders and other interested parties. Thanks to bother Dale Martin for running the first one and to our manager Sean for running the second one.
Appreciation night in December was well attended. We received many compliments on the quality of the food. Thank you to all the brother Knights that volunteered their time to make this event a success.
The New Years party was phenomenal. A big thank you to Brother Chris Lepain and family for the outstanding entertainment and to his wife Kathy for selling a ton of tickets. Close to 400 people were served. We were a little short staffed for the event but as usual the Knights rose to the challenge. Without being asked, brothers Chuck Roy and Dave Taylor saw the need and jumped up and pitched in to put out the fires. Thank you brothers. I would also like to thank Brother Chris Bergeron and his helper Ken for the great job cooking the steaks. There were a few lineups at the bar and hopefully these issues can be taken care of with a few changes for next year.
The Friday night specials continue to bring in the crowds to the Clubroom. On January 6 we served meatloaf to 87 patrons. Thanks to brothers Chuck Roy, Dave Taylor, Ron Hamelin, Dale Martin and his good wife Marcella for helping me make this night a success.
Gary Gardin President
A WORD FROM THE HALL MANAGERS
2005 brought a successful year here at the Columbian Club. Things have
been moving along in a very positive direction as of late. I would like to personally thank all of our Knights, as well as our regular patrons for their continued support, and understanding of
the changes in recent months.
Looking forward, I hope we can all make 2006 a stellar year for everyone! All the changes of staff and management in the last 6 months have made for a rewarding time for all of us here at the club. Bookings for weddings, receptions, meetings, and trade shows have been rolling in steadily. We have even begun bookings for 2007! Also, for those Knights and patrons that may have booked an event here in our Main hall or in our Club Room in the past, that may have a long standing arrangement with previous Columbian Club management, please discuss the particulars of your arrangement with the Columbian Club management or President before your event. The last thing we want is to disappoint someone after the fact because we were not aware of the specifics. So please, if you are uncertain that your agreement has been made clear to the Columbian Club management, please make it a point to bring it to our attention before the event. Many thanks again for all of your positive feedback. All of the staff and I greatly appreciate your kind words for all of the hard work being done behind the scenes here!

DISTRICT DEPUTIES REPORT
Dear Brother Knights, The month of February promises to be a busy
month. The councils should have their free throws finished and we will be completing the District level in February. This completion will be hosted by LaSalle Council 9500 at Sacred Heart School on February 25th. 11:00 A.M. practice. The Regional level of the Free Throw will be held on March
4th at Migration Hall in Kingsville. Practice is from noon till 12:45 P.M. with competition and awards ceremony from 1:00 P.M. till approximately 2:30 P.M. Participants must have credentials with them as well they need to know the Council name, number, city and the district they represent. They must also have gym shoes. Council free throw Chairmen are welcome to help. If you have any questions on the Regional free throw ask me at the district level, maps will be available for the winners.
The poster contest will be at the District level for judging in February to move on to the Zone level for March 1st.
There will also be a District Deputies meeting on March 9th, location to be announced. This is the years wrap up meeting before the May Convention. All executive members are encouraged to attend.
In February the councils need to get back into the membership drives for the last half of the year. If your council did not have a blitz in January then they should be having one in February. I have been supplying the Grand Knights and the Membership Chairman with a list of the upcoming degrees so we can get the new members through in a timely fashion. There is a third Degrees in April already planned and we want to insure that it is full of new members to help all the councils meet their quotas. So once again I am asking the membership to help their council’s achieve their membership goals. Work with your membership chairman at the churches to meet the potential new members. Let the new members know they are not working alone. We all know this is not how we get things done in the Knights. If you know of a potential member please make the effort to ask him to join. The number one reason that most men have not joined yet is because no one asked them.
Fraternally Yours, Gordon Edwards
District Deputy, District 88
