Memorial Day Observance (Flagler County)

Corpus Christi Assembly 2810 participated in the Flagler County Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 28th. The observance featured American Legion State Commander Steve Shuga, a much-decorated veteran who retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1995 after 20 years of service in such places as the Western Pacific, Saudi Arabia, Zaire, Japan and Kuwait. The ceremony also included the singing of the national anthem and “God Bless the USA”; local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts; and the placing of a wreath at the Veterans’ Monument in front of the Government Services Building.

Protecting Your Family… Business?

You already know that the Knight of Columbus is here for all your personal and family financial protection needs, but did you know that the Order can help secure your business too? As your Knights of Columbus field agent, I can help you protect the continuity of your business for years to come. Business insurance is the term used in the insurance industry to describe the use of life insurance and disability income insurance to solve certain financial needs of businesses and their owners. The products offered through the Order can cover many needs, such as: Economic loss to the business when a key

employee dies Disposition of a business owner’s interest

upon death or other separation from the business

If you’ve worked hard to establish a business, you owe it to yourself and your family to learn about the opportunities that the Knights of Columbus can offer.

With protection for the family, the business, the farm, retirement, long term care and disability coverage, the Knight of Columbus truly is your shield for all the elements of your life. Victor Silva, FIC, MDRT (386) 569-1918 (386) 693-4016 [email protected]

Corpus Christi Assembly June Picnic

Thanks to all Brothers who attended or

supported our Picnic held at the Monastery last month on Saturday, June 9th. We had an attendance of 50 people. The food was great and thanks to all the spouses who brought a salad or dessert. It put us over the top and the buffet served reflected it. Special thanks to Guy Deluca, and Jorgen Boriths, Fran Lapierre, Tony Gasparino, John Stankovich and Roland Salerno who set-up,

cooked, and cleaned up. They also made sure that they kept the buffet items supplied! Special thanks to Guy and Jorgen, who sweated it out behind the grill! A special thank you to Br. Patrick for hosting the event and to God for the great weather!

If you passed on coming, you missed a great time and good fellowship! Bob Calabrese, PFN

First Exemplification of the Fourth Degree (Feb. 22, 1900 - New York) Along with the addition of “patriotism” to the Knights’ principles came the first Fourth Degree exemplification, which took place on Feb. 22, 1900, in New York City, with 1,100 Knights participating. By the beginning of the 20th century, the fledgling Order was growing dramatically. Councils had been chartered throughout the United States and Canada, and international expansion continued into Mexico and the Philippines in 1905, along with Cuba and Panama in 1909. The Knights also turned their attention to college campuses, in more ways than one. In 1904, more than 10,000 Knights and their families attended ceremonies at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in which the Order presented the school with a grant for more than $55,000. The funds, used to establish a K of C chair of American history, began a long history of support for CUA. In addition, students at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana soon organized their own KofC council. Chartered in 1910, Notre Dame Council 1477 was the Order’s first college council, launching a subset of the Knights that today includes councils at 244 schools worldwide. Notable events at the turn of the 20th century:

• 1900: The first exemplification of the Fourth Degree takes place on Feb. 22, 1900, in New York City; 1,100 Knights receive the degree. The following May, another 750 Knights take the degree in Boston.

• 1904: More than 10,000 Knights and their families attend ceremonies at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in which a check for $55,633.79 is presented to the school for the establishment of a K of C chair of American history. From 1909 to 1913, Knights raise $500,000 to establish a permanent endowment for CUA. • 1905: The first council in the Philippines — Manila Council 1000 — is chartered (charter picture,

center page) by U.S. citizens after the Spanish-American War. The same year, the Order expanded to Mexico, establishing Guadalupe Council 1050 in Mexico City. • 1909: U.S. workers in the Canal Zone institute Balboa Council 1371 in Panama City. A degree team from Mobile, Ala., then visits Cuba and institutes San Agustin Council 1390 in Havana.

• 1909: A reported 5,000 Knights meet James A. Flaherty’s train in Philadelphia in 1909 when he arrives at the annual convention where he is elected supreme knight.
