FROM THE DESK OF THE GRAND KNIGHT:
Dear Brother Knights:
Let me offer a thank you to all those people this past year that
have helped guide me as a person, a Knights of Columbus
member, and as a Grand Knight. I feel that I have received more
at times that I have given, and I am thankful for it all. Please
remember that we all can make a difference in when, and how
we serve our acquaintances, friends, family, and the church. God
Bless.
Vivat Jesus
Ray Sandoval, Grand Knight
From The Desk of the Editor:
We are now at the end of another fiscal year. I want to take this
opportunity to thank our current Grand Knight, Ray Sandoval, for all of his
hard work and dedication to our council. We will be holding elections at our
next general business meeting so it is important that we get full
participation. The list of officers will be listed in an article in this newsletter.
On a separate note, as of this writing, I am without a cell phone; the only way to
contact me is by email. I hope to have that situation remedied soon.
May you all have a Happy Fathers Day. Pray for all Dads, Granddads, and God
Fathers. Saint Joseph, Father of the Church, Pray for Us

SAINT OF
THE MONTH
SAINT ANTHONY OF PADUA
The creator of the
heavens obeys a
carpenter; the God
of eternal glory
listens to a poor
virgin. Has anyone
ever witnessed
anything
comparable to this?
Let the philosopher
no longer disdain
from listening to
the common
laborer; the wise, to
the simple; the
educated, to the
illiterate; a child of
a prince, to a
peasant.
Saint Anthony of
Padua
Our Saint of the Month is one of the most famous of all saints. Most Catholics have
used Saint Anthony’s intersession for something lost or stolen. In this article, we will
examine his life and his ministry.
Born Fernando Martins was born in Lisbon Portugal during the lifetime of Saint
Frances of Assisi. He entered a cloistered priestly community at the age of 15. He would
eventually move to Coimbra to study theology and Latin and became enamored of the
simple lifestyle of the new order of Franciscans. News came to young Saint Anthony that
five Franciscans had been beheaded by the caliphate in Morocco and their bodies were
ransomed by King Alfonso. This inspired him to request to go to Morocco and was given
permission to join the Franciscans. However he became ill and had to return to Portugal.
Sicily. He next arrived in Tuscany and stayed at a convent there; his illness required him to
take up residence in a small cell in the friary in the town of Forli.
Part of Anthony’s legacy was due to his ability to preach and teach. While in Forli,
some Dominican friars were supposed to deliver a homily at an ordination. The Franciscans
thought that the Dominicans were going to occupy the pulpit but they were not prepared,
as they thought that one of the Franciscans were going to do so. The head of the friary
selected Saint Anthony to give the homily, though he resisted. All in attendance were
greatly impressed with his oratory skills and his ability to integrate scripture and theology
to his speech.
The story of Saint Anthony’s Patronage for lost or stolen objects involves a young
novice who had made the decision to leave the order. However, he stole a Psalter that
Anthony used to preach and teach, with copious notes and comments in the margins. Saint
Anthony prayed for the return of the book. The Holy Spirit moved the young novice to
change his ways and, not only did he return the book, but he returned to the order and
renewed his vows. It is claimed that that book still exists today.
Saint Anthony became renowned for his eloquent preaching. He had the ability to
explain scripture using allegory and symbolism. He even caught the attention of Pope
Gregory IX and he was often referred to as the jewel case of the Bible. The Pope
commissioned him to write down his sermons and homilies; Anthony’s Sermon’s for Feast
Days serves as his greatest work. Pope Gregory IX often referred to him as The Arc of the
Scriptures.
Saint Anthony contracted ergotism, a disease that comes from certain cereal fungi, which is
now known as Saint Anthony’s Fire. He Became a Doctor of the Church in 1946 by decree of
Saint Pius XII and serves as a great model for us….let us develop humility and a love of
scriptures in his honor. Saint Anthony, pray for us.

ba
Saint Anthony of Padua, our Saint of the Month, is one of the most
famous of all saints. I doubt that there is any Catholic who has not invoked
his intercession for something lost or stolen. During his lifetime, however, his
fame was due to his knowledge of Scripture. Pope Gregory IX gave him the
title “Arc of the Scriptures”.
Fernando Martins Bulhoes was born to wealthy parents in Lisbon,
Portugal. He entered a cloistered priest community of Saint Vincent at the
age of 15. He would later move to the main house of the Augustinian
community in Coimbra where he would be ordained to the priesthood. He
studied theology and Latin. While there, Young Fernando met some
Franciscans fleeing the persecution of the Moroccan Caliphate. He was so
inspired by their zeal that he asked permission to leave the Cannons Regular,
the cloistered community, and joined the local community of Franciscans,
adopting the name Anthony.
On his journey to Morocco, as part of his obedience to the order, he
became too ill to continue his journey. His ship back to Portugal was blown
off course and ended up in Sicily. He would eventually end up in the town of
Forli. While there, he was asked to preach a homily that some Dominicans
were supposed to preach at. At first he resisted but relented under obedience
to his order. His homily impressed everyone with his eloquence and his
knowledge of scripture.
As to his being the patron saint of lost things, the story goes that a novice left
the order and stole Anthony’s book of psalms with notes and commentaries.
After praying that the book would be found or returned, the novice had a
change of heart and returned the book and rejoined the order. That book is
claimed to be in preserved in a Friary in Bologna, Italy.
We Catholics should be cautious in thinking that praying to Saint Anthony for
lost items is some sort of automatic magical formula with a guarantee. God
may be telling you that you don’t need that anymore or maybe you are too
attached to it.
Saint Anthony of Padua, Pray for Us.

The Greatest Generation
Brothers, let us never forget the
sacrifices that veterans make,
especially those who landed on the
beaches of Normandy on June 6th,
1944. By their service, a great evil was
defeated and the tides of history were
changed forever. Sadly, many of this
generation do not understand how
close our world would succumb to Nazi
tyranny.
Fireworks Booth Update
Our council is ready to sell fireworks
during the Fourth of July holiday. As of
this writing, our location is still
unknown; the Rite Aid Drug Store that
we were assigned to is under new
management, so T N T Fireworks lost its
contract. We are tentatively scheduled
to start June 30th and sell until he
evening of July 4th. Stay tuned.
