Dear Brother Knights, Brothers we have just concluded our month of October, which is also considered the month of Mother Mary. As a sign of our love for our Holy Mother we conducted a daily rosary every day in the parish at our Lady’s statue. It seems only fitting as we have heard in the past weeks that Pope Benedict XVI declared the “Year of Faith” from October 11, 2012 to November 24, 2013 in which he urges us to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism so that we may deepen our knowledge of our faith. The Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion – to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. The “door of faith” is opened at one’s baptism, but during this year Catholics are called to open it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his Church.
The Archdiocese of Vancouver has started a new program called Catholics Come Home or CCH, and Archbishop Michael J. Miller has asked us all as Christians to look around our families and neighbours and encourage those that have not been to church for some time to come, visit and return to the fold. As Knights we should take this message and do all we can to return non-practising Catholics back to the church. We as members of this organisation that was started by a priest should be in the forefront of leading others in this urgent call, look around our work place and social circles and encourage them back to our Lord’s house. Our Chaplin Msgr. Luterbach has also requested that we pray for vocations from our own parish, let us support our Chaplin and do whatever we can to encourage the young to consider the vocation of priesthood. Let’s remember this intention for vocations in our daily prayers.
We have had a busy month of October and I assure you November and December will be equally busy, so here is your opportunity of lending your brothers a hand in helping out with the upcoming events. Your presence and help is much appreciated. God Bless.
Vivat Jesus!

FIELD AGENT’S MESSAGE
Jose P. Cabalu, FIC, CHS Field Agent
Four Parts of Retirement: Phase One
In the next four articles, I would like to discuss a goal that’s on many workers’ radar: retirement. To some,
retirement is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow or the reward after a long career. It’s a time to relax, take
up a hobby and enjoy life. Whether retirement is just around the next corner or if you have another 30 years to
go, it’s never too soon or too late to start planning or revise that plan.
Some experts suggest that there are four phases of retirement: protection, accumulation, income de-
accumulation and care. In this article, I will tackle protection.
Protection is the base element of any well-founded financial plan; the base of the pyramid, for example.
Without basic protection against premature death or the inability to earn income due to disability, the
remainder of the pyramid collapses. If you own mutual funds and die without life insurance, those funds will be
needed to pay final expenses (collapsing), perhaps at the most inopportune time (after a market correction). If
you own mutual funds and lose your ability to earn income due to disability and are without paycheck
protection, those funds will be needed in order to pay living expenses (collapsing), perhaps at the most
inopportune time (is there ever an opportune time?).
So, basic protection is a must. The good thing is that this protection is offered by the Knights of Columbus. Our
whole life products and disability income insurance are designed with this goal in mind. For example, our Life
Paid Up at 65 plan is perfect for this purpose because premium payments end right when retirement is upon
you. There are many other options that I can discuss with you that will fit your needs and your budget.
A newer addition to our product portfolio, disability income insurance protects your most valuable asset: your
ability to work and earn money. Plans can be customized and are available to cover many professions, from
farmers to lawyers.
Once you’ve established the proper protection, the next phase is accumulation of cash, which I will discuss in a
future article.

This year we held our 36th Anniversary and Awards Night on Saturday October 20th 2012. We would like to thank our Assistant Pastor Fr. Rodney Nootebos, our Prolife Chaplain for joining us in our celebration. We had the honor of having our Worthy State Advocate Peter Horsfield and his wife Nancy and District Deputy Ed Panes and his wife Maribeth for gracing our occasion.
We also had our Past Grand Knights attend the event and this gave us an opportunity to thank them for all their contributions to make our council what it is today. We had around 150 attendees which included Grand Knights and council members from St Joseph, St Monica and Canadian Martyrs. We would also like to thank Sr. Guadalupe, Sr. Maureen Theresa and Brother Jose Cabalu, our Field Agent. It was an evening of awards, appreciation and certificates for exceptional services rendered during the last fraternal year.

Brothers let us congratulate Bro Bernard Ter Stege and his family for being chosen the Family of the Month for October 2012. Bro Bernard and his wife Charmaine are always seen at Mass on Sundays at 0900 am along with their two little kids. Bro Bernard has been with our council since 2008 and has grown with our council. He is a 3rd Degree member of our Council and has been a past council officer. He is always at the pancake breakfast and is responsible for preparing the breakfast that everyone comes to enjoy. He is actively involved with the Blood Donor Clinic in our parish and is a regular blood donor also. He supported our council at the BC and Yukon State Convention this year by taking part in the entertainment. His wife Charmaine is a great supporter of the Knights of Columbus and takes an active part in our events. The kids attend mass with them and the daughter attends the Bible Study classes each Sunday.
Congratulations Ter Stege family and keep up your good work.
Brothers let us congratulate Bro Jesus Galo as being chosen Knight of the month for October 2012. Bro Jesus has been with our council since 2002 and has been a vital asset to our council. He has been active ever since he joined the Knights and is a past member of the Executive Committee. He can be seen taking an active role in many of our events. He is there at the Canada Day Parade, ushering at Sunday masses, Christmas and Easter ushering, serving at Seniors Luncheon, helping at Pancake Breakfast , Charity appeal mall and tickets sales and is always patronising any event that we put forward. Bro Jess is a true example of these men they call Knights.
Congratulations Bro Jesus Galo, keep up your good work and may others see and follow your examples.

MAN ALIVE! CATHOLIC MEN’S CONFERENCE OCTOBER 27TH 2012 VANCOUVER, BC
The first ever one-day Man Alive! Catholic Men’s Conference was held in Vancouver on October 27, 2012. This conference was the idea of Archbishop Michael J. Miller sponsored by the Archdiocese of Vancouver and by the generous support of the Knights of Columbus. There were around 1,400 participants that filled the Centre of Performing Arts to hear the inspirational talks given by Tom Peterson, Founder of ‘Catholics Come Home’; Peter Herbeck, Director of Renewal Ministries; Brian Patrick, Host of the Son Rises Morning Show; Kyle Neilson, Director of Office of Evangelization, Archdiocese of Vancouver and Archbishop Michael J. Miller. Confession and Mass was held at the conclusion of the event. There was a great representation of The Knights of Columbus both from the State and the local councils. I would highly recommend that all brother knights who were unable to attend this year’s conferenc e should make it a point to attend the next one as I guarantee that you will come home with a greater respect for yourself as a catholic and for the Catholic church and will be filled with an urge to help in spreading the good news and helping mankind change the world.

THE DAILY ROSARY
OCTOBER 2012
During the month of October (Our Lady’s Month) we conducted the daily rosary at our Lady’s statue and had a good response to our request. We were well supported by the CWL, Legion of Mary, Couples for Christ, Alpha and Charismatic group, Pro Life and Life teen, parishioners and our brother Knights and their spouses. A special thank-you to Bro John and Lolita Ty, Bro Francis and Joan Lee, Bro Efren and Min Guanzon, Bro Lorenzo and Julie Ranada, Bro Anthony and Jennifer Sales and Bro Willie and Merle Lobo who came devoutly every day to pray the rosary.
We were fortunate that for the first 2 weeks we had good dry weather and were able to hold the rosary outdoors by our Lady’s statue, but then as the showers started we were in the church foyer by our Lady of Guadalupe picture. On the last day a small reception was held for all those who attended. We have completed a total of 915 hours for the month of October in devotion to our Mother Mary and plan to have the same in the month of May especially during this ‘Year of Faith’. I encourage brother knights to bring your families to join in this powerful prayer - The Rosary.
In the group can be seen our State Family Life Director Alberto Nisperos and his wife Alma who supported our rosary campaign
