Knights Record March 2012 Brother Knights of Council 1028, as I start to write this newsletter I look out side at 60 degree weather. It's like spring out there. Who would have thought the weather would be this warm in February? It is supposed to be winter! But nature doesn't have a calendar. The birds are singing and the flowers are popping out of the ground. We need to enjoy it while this blessing lasts. Lent has started preparing us for the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. All Catholics have either given up something for Lent, or have promised God to do something to help themselves or others accomplish a goal or change a behavior. It is in this spirit of giving to others that started the Knights of Columbus through Father Michael J. McGivney back in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882. The Order's principles in 1882 were “Unity” and “Charity.” The concepts of “Fraternity” and “Patriotism” were added later. “The Columbus-linked themes, says historian Christopher J. Kauffman, 'reverberated with pride in the American promise of liberty, equality and opportunity'.” From these humble beginnings, started the Knights of Columbus to support the emerging cause of Catholic civil liberties. Now, as back in 1882, it is still our duty to uphold the Freedom of Religion no matter what the price. We are now being told by our government to give up our beliefs as Catholics. It is our job as Knights of Columbus to stand by our Pope and Priests to uphold our God given rights and belief. We are at all times open to new members. Recently we have had Brother Knights come back to Council 1028 or have joined as new members. This is tremendous and encouraging to see more new members looking to give of themselves to help others. Please ask any family member, friend or fellow Catholic to look at the Knights of Columbus Council 1028 as a great organization enabling its members to help others in the name of Christ. We may still be in the winter of 2012, but with the encouragement of our faith and the Knights of Columbus it sure feels like spring. Thank you! Brother Knights of Council 1028, as I start to write this newsletter I look out side at 60 degree weather.

Kauffman, 'reverberated with pride in the American promise of liberty, equality and opportunity'.”

From these humble beginnings, started the Knights of Columbus to support

the emerging cause of Catholic civil liberties. Now, as back in 1882, it is still our duty to uphold the Freedom of Religion no matter what the price. We are now being told by our government to give up our beliefs as Catholics. It is our job as Knights of Columbus to stand by our Pope and Priests to uphold our God given rights and belief.

PRO-LIFE NEWSThe Catholic Church lovingly offers help with neither judgment nor condemnation through the ministry of Project Rachel which brings hope and healing to the hurting. Please give them a call at 1-888-456-HOPE(4673)

Please be aware of House Bill 4085, The Ultrasound Opportunity Act. The Ultrasound Opportunity Act simply requires that a woman seeking an abortion, after 7 weeks gestation,

be offered the opportunity to receive and view an ultrasound on her baby by the physician who is to perform the abortion, the referring physician, or another qualified person working in conjunction with either physician. In the end, this legislation enacts a small change. Competent medical practice and state law requires the use of ultrasound before abortion. This legislation adds on one simple question: Would you like to see the ultrasound image?

    40 Days for Life (February 21-April 1,2012) P l e a s e v i s i t t h e w e b s i t e w w w .40daysforlife.com. Always remember to keep the unborn in your daily prayers. God will bless you for this small act of kindness.

A state wide advocacy initiative, coupled with a prayer campaign, will be supported by all the Catholic Dioceses during the upcoming legislative session. The focus will be to seek further legal protections for mothers and their unborn children, primarily through the Ultrasound Opportunity Act. The Diocese of Belleville will join the Diocese of Springfield for the prayer campaign specifically the week of March 25-31, with an advocacy day at the state capital in Springfield on March 28.

DUES ARE OVERDUE!Thank you to all who have paid their dues for the year. If you have not yet, you have probably received a KNIGHT ALERT letter and will be contacted by a member of our Retention Committee. This is your third reminder and the next step is an “Intent to Suspend” letter. If you wish to cancel your membership (withdraw), the Supreme Council requires that I receive a signed letter from you stating your intention to withdraw your membership. A note on your dues bill or a phone call is not sufficient. Sorry, those are the rules from Supreme. The signed letter ensures that it is your decision and not ours.

INSURANCE NEWS•  During 2011, the Order issued more life insurance than ever before in our history: $7.9 billion.•  Our total insurance in force reached a new high of $83.5 billion. To put this remarkable number in perspective, consider that at the end of 2000, we stood at $40.4 billion.• The Order introduced a new disability income insurance product in April. Called Income Armor®, this addition to our portfolio is designed in the spirit of Father Michael J. McGivney, and can provide a steady stream of income in the event of a long-term injury or illness.• We finished the year with more field agents serving our members than ever before. Still, as our membership continues to grow, new agent candidates are always in demand across the U.S. and Canada. The ultimate goal is to have all of our members served by a dedicated, full-time agent, and, if you know someone who may be interested in becoming an agent, please  contact us.•   The Order’s assets under management reached a new high, exceeding $18 billion.• During 2011, we celebrated four exceptional months that were in the “best ever” category. Records were set in May, August, October and November.• Nearly 20,000 new retirement annuities were issued to our members and their families in 2011.•  Our A++ (Superior) rating from A.M. Best was reaffirmed and there continues to be no more highly rated life insurer in North America.•  As the costs of long-term care continue to rise, members and their spouses continue to turn to the Knights of Columbus to help them prepare for this expense. Our agents can show you how this product can protect the assets you’ve worked so hard to accumulate.• Our number of associate members becoming insured members continued to grow, showing more of our brothers availed themselves to our products. We hope this trend continues and that more members understand the value of owning our products.
