New challenges

In general, KNAPP AG expects a satisfactory level of new investments in the target industries and expects to continue with the high order intake of the previous years. New demands on multichannel warehouses, new work place regulations and quality requirements will continue to be the determining factors for new, replacement and expansion investments.

In the markets relevant to the KNAPP Group, especially in Central and Northern Europe, economic growth is stable. The USA has also shown positive economic development.

The continuous expansion of the activities of the producing subsidiaries KNAPP AB, KNAPP Systemintegration GmbH, and Dürkopp Fördertechnik GmbH, offers another chance as their revenues are likely to increase due to the present level of orders. The strategy to improve the satisfaction of our customers was successfully realized by strengthening customer services. An increase in turnover is also expected in this area.Based on the high level of orders and the quality of the offer projects, we continue to anticipate an organic growth of about 10 percent.

The changing face of logistics

1952Ing. Günter Knapp founded a company to manufacture special machines and set up a small workshop in the cellar of his private home, employing two metal smiths.

1960Production expanded. The company began to build milk pumps, doughnut filling machines, lifts and small conveying systems.

1972KNAPP lands the first international order: The first logistics system is installed in Germany for the pharmaceutical wholesaler Dr. Krey & Figener in Düsseldorf.

1980A production hall and an office building is established at the city limits of Graz: Günter-Knapp-Strasse 5–7 is still the address of company headquarters.

2000The fast-mover autopicker SDA-2000 dominates the market. The autopicker processes up to 2,000 orders per hour. KNAPP catapults to the top of the Material Handling Suppliers World’s Top 20.

2002KNAPP plays a leading role in developing automated picking systems and dynamic goods-to-person systems. KNAPP makes history: The first OSR Shuttle™ goes into operation.

2008KNAPP continues on its successful course and expands into Scandinavia by acquiring the logistics company MOVING AB.

2009On July 1, 2009 KNAPP appears under its new name, KNAPP AG.

Even though the demands on logistics have changed significantly since the company was founded in 1952, the basic goal is still the same: The right goods in the right quantities in the right place at the right time.

1983A long-standing vision becomes reality – an autopicker for the pharmaceutical sector. The autopicker sets new standards in the industry.

1990The first order in the USA with emphasis on software solutions is prelude to the opening up of international markets.

1999KNAPP purchases the companies SYSLOG and LOGIM and builds competence and know-how in the software branch.

2010KNAPP acquires the German company Dürkopp Fördertechnik GmbH and advances to market leader and supplier of complete logistics systems for the fashion sector.

2011KNAPP employs around 2,000 people worldwide. The OSR Shuttle™ is the leading technology in goods-to-person systems. KNAPP advances into a new era in intralogistics with KiSoft Vision.

201260 years with KNAPP By the beginning of the year, KNAPP already reports selling the 10,000th shuttle – the newest generation OSR Shuttle™ supplies 50 million pairs of shoes each year for shoe manufacturer Clarks US starting at the end of 2012.

What are the demands of our customers – what concepts can KNAPP offer?

This always depends on the relevant sector, which is why we focus on a few selected sectors. In the end, it always comes down to the same topic: to work with the least number of goods movements as possible within the warehouse. We have created pioneering solutions in this field with the all-in shuttle, the flexible warehouse and the multi-channel warehouse. The goods are moved as little as possible, which is a major contribution to sustainability. After all it is much better not to move articles at all, than to move them using less energy. Further trends are the goods-to-person principle and the maximum use of floor space, which means storing goods at heights. Of course energy consumption and energy efficiency are always an issue. With energy consumption of 5–10 percent compared to conventional AS/RS, we took a big step forward with our shuttles. And the quality aspect: each quality outlier consumes unnecessary energy which means we have to avoid making mistakes

How will KNAPP influence the market in the future?

The next trend that we are setting is the zero defect warehouse. For checks and quality assurance, entire warehouses are conventionally equipped with fully-automated check systems that are located after the picking areas. This means additional space, heating, cooling and lighting is required, which is not advantageous in terms of sustainability; also, the jobs are not attractive. We are headed on a completely different path: There are no more conventional check stations, instead we check each section in the warehouse in which activity is taking place. To this end we use image recognition and image processing system, both in the automatic areas as well as in manual areas. The principle is based on the quality management systems of the automobile sector, which is to prevent errors in the process and so no checks are required at the end.

OSR Shuttle™

All-in shuttle – A success story

Revolution

On April 1, 2002 the first OSR Shuttle™ was put into operation at the pharmaceutical wholesaler Richter Pharma in Wells, Austria. With the development and startup of the first shuttle system worldwide, KNAPP not only began a new chapter in the history of logistics, but also ushered in a whole new age.

Back then, stacker cranes were used for the vertical and horizontal transport of storage containers in an automated storage system, and the shuttle technology was, at first, met with scepticism. The basic principle of the OSR Shuttle™ is the decoupling of the vertical and horizontal transport of load carriers. This means that there is one shuttle on each level that stores or retrieves the load carrier before transfer onto a lift. The throughput and availability of the system is tremendously increased.

Today we cannot do without the shuttle technology. The shuttle technology has become state-of-the-art and therefore indispensable to modern intralogistics.

Page 31: KNAPP AG 2012_Company Overview

KNAPP AG | 31

the companyTechnology and Innovation | All-in shuttle

Evolution

Today’s shuttle systems simply dwarf the original OSR Shuttle™ systems: In the beginning, the maximum construction height was six meters and the rack length was limited to 30 meters. These dimensions were completely adequate for the time. Over the years, demands on the OSR Shuttle™ and the applications of this technology have grown, and with this the systems themselves have become larger. The product family has been completed by technologies such as the Fastbox, or the ergonomic Pick-it-Easy work stations.

Originally designed as an efficient storage and picking system for the pharma branch, the OSR Shuttle™ now covers an almost unlimited product spectrum, and unifies various warehouse processes and sales channels. Through the use of OSR Shuttles™, item range, warehouse processes and sales channels merge to form one harmonious framework – the low complexity warehouse.

The shuttle systems themselves have also grown considerably. The current OSR Shuttles™ tower as high as a 10 storey apartment building and have reached 100 meters in length. The systems have also become more flexible: Containers with goods weighing as much as 50 kg can be stored as much as four-deep. Adjustable telescope arms make it possible to handle warehouse containers varying from the size of an A5 sheet to the size of a europallet.

Versatile scope of application: OSR Shuttle™

Complex things made simple

The low complexity warehouse means to reduce the multitude of technologies used in warehouse and to simplify warehouse processes: For every application in the warehouse, KNAPP has a suitable system for the OSR Shuttle™ line of products. In the low complexity warehouse, the OSR Shuttle™ is the backbone of the logistical system.

Using the OSR Shuttle™ as an all-in-one solution provides access to the full range of items; warehouse areas and various business areas merge in to a harmonious framework. In the modern world of intralogistics, where the keyword is multi-channel, serving various sales channels from a central point is becoming more and more meaningful, and the low complexity warehouse represents a cutting edge solution.

Low complexity warehouse

The path travelled by an item goes from goods-in to picking to dispatch, and can include processes such as returns management, replenishment processes or cross-docking – these processes often require a great deal of logistical effort and many different technologies. With the low complexity warehouse, KNAPP had harmoniously brought together various technologies and processes.

the companyTechnologie und Innovation | Zero defect warehouse

Picking with KiSoft Vision

In the course of processing orders there are always potential sources of errors, which cost time and money. With the zero defect warehouse KNAPP delivers a storage concept in which the use of the most modern technology makes picking errors a thing of the past.

Preventing errors before they happen

KNAPP combines existing solutions with innovative technologies in the zero defect warehouse and sets new standards in quality assurance and checks. The costs of errors are therefore reduced to a minimum and the level of service and the delivery reliability for the customer are improved. In the zero defect warehouse, unique man-machine interfaces are used. The zero error strategy is, for example, realized through the most modern image analysis with KiSoft Vision. KiSoft Vision is a revolutionary optical picking technology that functions with augmented reality. The real environment is overlaid with virtual information and pictures. This information is displayed through a head mounted display. This makes the picking process simple, efficient and reliable. Highest picking quality

In order to be able to handle the increasing number of orders and optimally supply about 650 pharmacies in the Aragon region, Aragofar decided to carry out a comprehensive modernization and expansion of the distribution centre in Zaragoza. The innovative all-in-one solution ensures optimized warehouse processes and integrates existing systems.

The brain behind the automation solution is the powerful logistics software KiSoft, responsible for all the central warehouse processes from warehouse and stock management to the control of subsystems, and making complete lot tracking possible. This provides the highest quality standards for Aragofar customers. The stacker crane Speeder carries out the automatic replenishment, the OSR Shuttle™ offers space-effective storage and efficient picking. Storage and picking strategies are tailored to the respective article group making the gentle and efficient processing of items possible. The picking stations are designed according to ergonomic principles; the goods-to-person principle also minimizes the time needed for walking. The majority of orders are fulfilled automatically by the central belt autopickers, while specific items are manually picked using RF technologies.

Aragofar Innovative all-in-one solution for optimal supply

With the intelligent KNAPP solution, about 90% of the order lines can be processed automatically. During order processing, automated and manual process are seamlessly combined, guaranteeing order processing with the fewest possible errors, highest possible throughput and the fastest transit time.

Stakeholder values

KNAPP AG, as member of the local economy, society and environment, is well aware of its particular duties towards both man and nature.

The principle of sustainability as well as ecological and social principles build an integral part of the company strategy and therefore form the foundation of daily decision-making.

KNAPP has laid great emphasis on economical, ecological and social integrity in all business areas. The business policy is oriented to the principles of stakeholder values: The success of the company is measured not only on economical factors such as profit, but also on such factors as customer satisfaction and the impact on the environment and society.

At KNAPP, CSR means...

Sustainable all-in-one solutions

As a solution provider, KNAPP offers customized all-in-one solutions that are designed and optimized with the principle of sustainability in the foreground. From the first idea and extending across the entire product life-cycle to its end, the products and system solutions are analysed, making safety and error management efficient. The products are produced, installed at the customer and started up with the aim of conserving resources.

Sustainability and CSR

The idea of sustainable economics originally began in German forestry. Only as much wood was harvested from the forest as could grow back. The modern concept of sustainability is based on this principle.

Research and development

The development and creation of all the products at KNAPP are conducted using the most modern technologies in consideration of the environment and resources. Central elements of research and development are, for example, the reduction of current consumption, shortening transport distances, and weight-saving design of the systems.

Efficient and energy-saving

The ecological and economical advantages of the OSR Shuttle™ stand out: One OSR Shuttle™ aisle can attain the same performance as 5 aisles with a stacker crane but only needs 5 percent of the energy required by a stacker crane. Additionally, installing an OSR Shuttle™ decreases the space required by about half, in comparison to conventional station and sorting systems. This saves on building costs and materials, and the heating and cooling requirements are significantly reduced.

The shuttle itself weighs very little, therefore optimizing power requirements. The brake energy of the lifts and shuttles is also fed back into the system. The control software KiSoft SRC continually optimizes transport routes and transport movements, making an important contribution to energy conservation. The OSR Shuttle™ achieves in sum the lowest energy consumption of comparable systems on the market and is additionally more powerful, all due to the use of the most modern energy-saving technologies.

Environmental protection at coffee time

KNAPP has its own coffee mug, given to each employee with the request to use it in the coffee machine instead of relying on plastic cups. It is also more pleasant to drink coffee out of a mug instead of a plastic cup.

The KNAPP coffee mug is proof that it is possible to combine environmental awareness with one of life’s little pleasures. With this strategy, KNAPP hopes to reduce the use of plastic cups by at least 40 percent, with the initial count at 200,000 cups.

KNAPP launches environmental controlling

In cooperation with the Fachhochschule Campus 02, KNAPP determined the ecological footprint of the company’s 65,000 m² headquarters in Hart bei Graz in fiscal year 2010/11 and the first half of 2011/2012. The analysis included the categories energy, air emissions and waste, as well as infrastructure and environmental management indices. When the project concluded at the end of January 2012, it was clear that the main producers of CO2 were in the area energy, in the form of electricity, district heating and gas. Other important indices come from the fuel consumption of the company fleet and from waste generation. KNAPP plans to expand the controlling and to implement the Balanced Scorecard in the future.

Small acts – great effects

Protocol, offer, contracts: In a large company like KNAPP AG a tremendous quantity of paper is printed every day – per year about 5 million sheets. Stacked on top of each other, this paper would build a tower that is 500 metres high, which would tower over the world-famous Empire State Building as well as the Petronas Towers, and would be eye to eye with the tallest building in the world, the Taipeh Tower. To reduce paper consumption, KNAPP AG made double-sided printing the standard setting for all printers in the company.

Along with this huge amount of paper, numerous empty carton toner cartridges must also be properly disposed. Since 2004, KNAPP AG has been supporting a recycling project for empty toner cartridges that profits the Styrian children’s cancer fund.

Resource conserving production

In the production halls of the Hart bei Graz location, conserving resources plays an important role. KNAPP is a long-time member of the environmental programme, Ökoprofit, of the City of Graz, an effort for the ongoing improvement of use of raw materials and energy at the Hart bei Graz location. The production halls, for example, are heated with machine waste heat. The yearly consumption of coating powder in the coating plant at KNAPP is enormous: 35 football fields could be painted with this coating. A powder recovery system ensures that no powder is lost or wasted. The powder, used to coat the parts of the KNAPP systems, is non-toxic and water soluble.

Seeing the world through the eyes of others

KiSoft Web Eye is a revolutionary new system for service support: The staff on site wears a headset with camera, microphone, speakers and a see-through display. The KNAPP Hotline technician can then see what the on-site employee sees and can give precise directions or upload videos, sketches or documents to be seen on the display.

The misunderstandings that often occur over the phone can be avoided, and failures can be more quickly rectified. This also reduces the cost and environ- mental impact of travel to locations.

Supplier code of conduct

To minimize transport times and emissions, KNAPP mainly reaches out to a network of regional suppliers. When selecting a supplier, KNAPP places high value on the use of high quality material and resource conservative manufacturing, as well as first-class working environments and fair pay for the employees. Outside of Austria, KNAPP only produces in countries fulfilling these requirements and that have strict regulations for quality, environment as well as for health and safety.

Mobility initiative

KNAPP AG also actively promotes employee awareness of environmentally-friendly transportation alternatives such as the bicycle or the train. The KNAPP fleet has been augmented by a small bicycle and e-bike fleet, and very short business trips can be made with the bikes. A significant improvement in mobility was made by the opening of a fast commuter train station in the immediate neighbourhood of the company headquarters. Many employees have already switched from cars to environmentally-friendly fast trains.

Many KNAPP employees have decided to form carpools: these save time and money, as well as emissions. To help with the formation of carpools, KNAPP decided to use the online carpool portal flinc.org. Through the online portal, employees can comfortably search for an appropriate carpool on a mobile terminal. Participation in carpools has risen from 4 percent to 11 percent.

Body and mind in harmony

KNAPP is investing in awareness not just in terms of the environment, but also in the area of personal wellness. A healthy mind is best found in a healthy body. This basic thought has lead to the health programmes and measures of KNAPPvital and Impuls, to keep the balance between mind and body strong and healthy.

Along with a comprehensive sport and movement programme, KNAPPvital also offers diverse cultural and pleasurable events for the employee. Through these measures, cross-departmental contacts are promoted aside from the workday, which has a positive influence on the work atmosphere.
