Good afternoon and welcome to Redding Way for our FA Cup game against Bournemouth FC. I hope our visitors today enjoy their short stay with us and have a safe journey home. Pre season has seen some changes in clientele, Kevin Bailey my assistant sadly resigned his post as assistant manager due to personal reasons, Kevin put some great ideas into the squad and will be missed by all. This season I have brought in some new and old faces. Danny Perks comes in as assistant manager, with his knowledge of players and the changing game he will be a fantastic asset to the club. Alex Lumley comes in as head coach, his training and contribution towards the squad will be an excellent addition this season. Steve Pearman comes in as part of the management and coaching staff to help out with the day to day running of the squad. On the field we have had incomings and outgoings. Danny Taylor returns after his short trip across to Westfield, striker Danny Turner and midfielder Gavin Muir joins us from Badshot Lea, midfielder Luke Whiddett joins us from Farnham Town, Harry Roberts joins us from Ashford Town, Harry Rapley joins us from Frimley Green and Roberto Dos Santo joins us from Bath FC. Departing the club is Josh Coke who joins Guildford City and most notably Charlie Postance who has signed for Ryman League side Whyteleafe. Although our pre season has been very hit and miss I do believe that once this set of players click and gel then we will be a force to beat. Onto today and as in any cup game you just never know, our opposition today are as much in the dark as we are as in how each other play, this sets up to be a very exciting encounter so I hope you enjoy the game this afternoon. Thank you for your support.

A LOOK BACK…THE FA CUP FAIRFORD TOWN 1 KNAPHILL 3 - SATURDAY 16TH AUGUST 2014
The stage was set on Saturday for Knaphill’s debut in the FA Cup, and what an excellent start it was with a 3-1 win away to Hellenic League club Fairford Town, to give them a passage through to the next round where they were to play hosts to Badshot Lea with then two Premier Division clubs meeting at Redding Way on Saturday 30th August.
Early pressure and a fast opening pace had Knaphill taking control of the opening stages, and after just ten minutes Jamie Daltrey drilled a superb stike through the Fairford rearguard which found the net between keeper and his near post to make it 1-0. Such was the speed and swiftness of Knaphill’s attacking play and possession that they strengthened the lead in the 18th minute. Josh Watkins surged forward towards goal and neatly slipped the ball past the keeper with ease.
Two goals up and into cruise control as the half progressed. Fairford were limited to producing any threat and testing Richard Shelley in the visitors goal, with any creativity from midfield fizzled out before the 18 yard box. Knaphill kept up the pressure with Daltrey being instrumental in several attacking moves to add to his early opening goal.
A LOOK BACK…THE FA CUP FAIRFORD TOWN 1 KNAPHILL 3 - SATURDAY 16TH AUGUST 2014
But it was not until three minutes before halftime that they enhanced their two goal margin. Prior to that, Fairford had their rare effort on goal in the 40th minute with Luke Cordery steering his shot just wide of the post. Knaphill’s third goal came from Watkins who latched onto a through ball and delivered into the far corner of goal to finish the half with a comfortable lead.
The second half didn’t see Knaphill add to their first half scoreline, they had chances to put away another three goals, but the goal route didn’t have the same finishing effect as the first forty five minutes. On 57 minutes, Fairford were awarded a penalty, but the spot kick was diverted onto the edge of his near post by Shelley then spin up and the follow up headed over the bar. Knaphill substitute Jahmal Ramsay went close after 63 minutes, his shot just wide of the far post.
By the middle of the half Knaphill’s fluency had slipped a bit in comparision to the first half as the home side started to find a bit more space when moving forward, and Matt Boucher was given a free header to easily plant past Shelley after 72 minutes. In the final fifteen minutes, Knaphill had two good opportunities, Watkins fired over when well placed, and a shot from Ramsay had the keeper palming the ball away for a corner. Fairford had a couple of chances in the latter stages of the game, but Knaphill’s overall performance gave them their first win on an afternoon they made their first appearance in the FA Cup competition.
Team: Shelley, Green, Taylor,Paterson, Doble, Daltry(Norman 73),Harris, Close, Watkins, Hogsden(Ramsey 60),Oakley(Ruggles 80).

Bournemouth
THE STORY OF “THE POPPIES” The club was founded at a Meeting held in Abbotts Auction Mart in Old Christchurch
Road by eight enthusiastic gentlemen presided over by Alderman J Nethercoate (later to
become Mayor of Bournemouth) on 11 September 1875. It was decided to call the club
Bournemouth Rovers and is one of the oldest clubs in the country being founder
Members of the Football Association, the Hampshire F.A. and the Bournemouth F.A. A
brief spell as Bournemouth Dean Park (where an all white kit was chosen) Bournemouth
FC was adopted in 1889 having amalgamated with another local side- Bournemouth
Arabs.
The club was among founder members of the Hampshire League and up to joining the
Wessex League in 1986 had played entirely in the Hampshire League, except for a short
spell at the turn of the 20th century. Earliest record of playing in the FA Cup was a 6-0
defeat at Kennington Oval against Old Westminsters back on 1 November 1884. The club
played the second game in the inaugural Hampshire League campaign of 1896/97, going
down 1-0 to Ryde Sports on 12 September 1896, finishing sixth from eight.
The club has had three homes during its history with their first ground being at a place
called East Common near the Bournemouth railway station and Dean Park (current home
of Dorset County Cricket) before moving to Victoria Park, which was formerly a farmer ’s
field.
The first taste of County success came in winning the West Division in 1905 and then
again in 1910. Poppies became County Division Champions either side of the Great War in
1914 and 1922, picking up the Hampshire League Shield in 1913, with Wheeler scoring 76
goals that season from 47 matches including 9 in a 19 day period. The furthest progress
in the FA Amateur Cup came at that time as well, reaching the 3rd Round in 1923/24 but a
1-0 home reverse against Botwell Mission (who in later years became Hayes) put an end
to hopes of silverware that time.

Bournemouth
However in 1929 the club was relegated into the newly formed Division 2regaining top
flight status by winning the Division 2 Championship in 1932. The club languished in the
bottom half of Division 1 for several seasons before finally falling back into Division 2
when football restarted after the Second World War. The club recovered some of its
past glories by winning the Hampshire Intermediate Cup in 1950 and again in 1970 and
1972. Division 1 status was regained for the 1979/80 season but relegation quickly fol-
lowed in 1980/81 and again in 1982/83 when we slipped into Division 3 remaining there
until being admitted to the newly formed Wessex League in 1985.
The Wessex League Championship has remained elusive coming close on two occasions
with a 3rd place in 1990/91 under the guidance of Tommy Taylor and runners up spot in
1994/5 to Fleet Town when Alex Pike was the manager. The first piece of silverware for a number of years arrived in 2010/11, in the 25th Wessex League season, in the shape of the League Cup, with a 1 -0 win over Winchester City. 2011/12 saw the team reach the FA Carlsberg Vase Quarter Final for the first time - going out to 0-2 in a home reverse against West Auckland Town. Indifferent seasons followed in 2012/13, 2013/14 and last term. The end of 2014/15 couldn’t come soon enough as the club were locked in a struggle to avoid the drop from the turn of the year, and only a couple of wins on the road at Andover and Brockenhurst ensured Premier Division safety. The team has again been rebuilt with almost a complete new look squad, we are proud to be the sole club to have played in the top flight in each Wessex League season, and will be looking for a big improvement on last season’s ranking. One of the clubs most famous members was William Pickford (who later became Chairman of the English Football Association). Mr. J Joy, a local landowner and supporter of the club, gave the present Namu Road ground to the club. Bournemouth Council bought the ground after in October 1944 for £3,750 providing a lease on a peppercorn rent. The new clubhouse was opened in 1985- just in time for entering the Wessex League and the current 205-seater stand provides adequate cover from the elements with several rows of bench seating replacing the old wooden stand that was destroyed by fire during 1974. This stretches about a third of the length of the pitch – next to the glass-fronted clubhouse.

Development Squad Keowns Latest News & Views...

The development side go into their second successive season in the Suburban Premier Division in good shape, both on and off he pitch. Assisted by Steve Hobbs, Barry Losty and James Harris, the up coming season will hopefully see an improvement on our previous league position, given the experience the young squad gained playing against Ryman and Vanarama level reserve sides, including Woking , Leatherhead and Maidenhead. Last season started with the bulk of the squad was that won promotion in season 2016/17, but this changed after a dozen games when a few left to play first team football for other clubs. We blooded a number of youth team players and drafted in some new faces, which enabled the squad to progress in the right direction after a tricky start. Winning the Suburban Trophy was the highlight of last season, beating Tring Athletic FC 2-0 In the final, alongside beating and drawing with Woking U23 in the Suburban league. Preparations are going well for the upcoming season. So far the squad have played Worcester Park and Sandhurst first teams and Ascot Utd Reserves as well as training twice a week for the last month. We will have the squad fully prepared for what promises to be a very interesting season and will have the players in good shape to support the first team-when injuries arise. Our first league game of the season is at Redding Way on Saturday 12th August v Leatherhead.

Under 18s Barry’s Notes From Our Allied Counties Youth League Side...
future knappers 16
A good afternoon to you all for what promises to be a very exciting and nail biting start to the 2017/18 season. This will be my third season in charge of the U18s here at Knaphill and I am quite excited about some of the young players that are in the youth squad this coming season. We have retained 15 of last seasons squad two of which played for the first team last season and several more played for the reserves. Hopefully more of the youth team will make the jump and play for the reserves regularly. At the time of writing these notes the youth team has played one pre-season match, against Ryman Youth side, Chertsey Town and came away with a very creditable 2-1 win. We have pre-season matches lined up against Ash Utd, Sandhurst Town and Spelthorne Sports. Our season gets under way with a home fixture against the Met Police in the FA Youth cup on 5 Sep-tember. I don't think we could have been given a tougher draw!! Our league fixtures get underway the following week away to Fleet Spurs. The Knaphill FC u18 squad for the 2017/18 season is Adam Hobbs, Max Roffey, Martin Danks, Benn Watson, Sid Adams, Harry Webb, Tom Davies, Max Petters, Jimmy Cormer, Josh Barry, Aaron Carthy, Will Mckechnie, Harri Elliott, Rohan Rutah, Charlie Smith, Ethan Losty, Reece Agymen, John Morrison, Xav Brewer, Michael Trowbridge, James Madico Enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

The FA Cup: A History of Magic
“I fell in love with football as I was later to fall in love
with women: suddenly, inexplicably, uncritically, giving
no thought to the pain or disruption it would bring with
it.” – Nick Hornby, Fever Pitch
The FA Cup is the oldest cup competition in the world.
It is just shy of a century and a half old. In the same year
as the first ever FA Cup match, Germany was created,
there was a Napoleon in captivity having been removed
as leader of France, Queen Victoria opened the Royal
Albert Hall, and the President of the United States was
former Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant. The FA Cup
has survived from that alien, ancient time, to provide us
with something that few other competitions in the
world can provide. As unlikely as it may seem, it is still
possible, 146 years later, for a team that starts in the
earliest rounds – the first weekend of August, before
the elite clubs have even returned from their far-flung
pre-season tours – to go all the way and win the FA Cup.
That’s something worth celebrating.
Of course, the competition has evolved significantly in
that time. Only fifteen teams entered the original
competition (this season there are over 700), which was
of course won by Wanderers. Before the construction of
a national stadium in Wembley (The Empire Stadium, as
it was originally known), the final took place at one of
the other great British sporting venues – the Oval.
Slightly under 90,000 fans poured into Wembley to
watch last year’s final. In 1972, it was just 2,000, and they
saw Morton Betts score in a single goal victory for
Wanderers against Royal Engineers. It was the first of 5
FA Cup victories, the last of which came in 1878, 140
years ago by the time we reach this season’s final. That
puts them in the top 10 all-time FA Cup winners, joined
on 5 by Everton and Manchester City.
The Cup is famous for, almost synonymous with, giant
killings. We all know about Hereford beating Newcastle
and Sutton beating Coventry, but it was going on long
before the television cameras were there to pick up the
action. In the late 1940s, Swindon won away at Burnley,
who were the FA Cup holders, in one of the biggest
shocks of all time, and a year later tiny Yeovil, playing
deep in non-league, beat mighty Sunderland of the old
First Division – a Sunderland side referred to as The Bank
of England because of the amount of money they had
spent chasing success. As far back as 1907, non-league
(as they were at the time) Crystal Palace, in difficult
form, travelled to a Newcastle United side who were
second in the league and unbeaten at St. James’ Park,
and won. Perhaps this was the first great giant killing.
Over the years, the FA Cup has fallen from grace as the
showpiece final, the ultimate goal, to be seen as
secondary prize to the clubs that often win it. As much
as loyal supporters might want silverware, to the richest
in the land it is not as worthwhile as finishing fourth and
a coveted place in the Champions League, but this
should not diminish the famous old competition.
Some say the magic of the cup is gone, or at least in
short supply, but they are mistaken. Just look at the
competition and ask fans of Brackley Town, of Sutton
United, how magical they think the cup was. Just look
ask Bishop Auckland, who made it from the Extra-
Preliminary Round to the Fourth Qualifying Round, or
Westfields, who went one better. Look at Stamford,
who beat National League side Wrexham.
So, while the boys at the top argue that the cup has no
magic left to give, let us remember that Lincoln City
captured the imaginations of football fans up and down
the country last season. While they persist that it is a
secondary competition and that they would rather finish
third in the league, let us remember that it was this
diminished competition that saved Arsene Wenger’s job,
the longest serving manager in the country. And let us
not forget that it all begins on the first weekend of
August. There might only be a few paying attention to
the earliest rounds of the FA Cup, only a few who realise
that the competition starts before January. But it is
those few, who come to an Extra-Preliminary Round
game at the height of summer, who make the
competition what it is. The smallest of teams has a
chance to provide the magic, and that’s all we ask for, a
chance. Enjoy the game.
