This isn’t the article I planned to write before the events of May 31. That article was to focus on
the election of the new KMA Board (Brian Negin, Chair; Yehoshua Leor, Vice-Chair; Leo Robbins,
Treasurer; Susan Lazinger, Secretary; Jodie Asaraf; Pauline Clein; Howard Fierstein; Aliza Haas;
Naftali Halberstadt; Elliot Jager; Danby Meital; and Edith Paller), the Egal Process (with thanks to
Naftali and his Steering Committee for organizing the focus groups, survey, discussions and
more) and preparations for managing KMA during Rav Barry’s sabbatical in the States (hiring a
professional manager and relying on member rabbis for rabbinical matters).
The events of May 31 have left me with a heavy heart and made what I intended to write seem
trivial. The pain of watching the video of our soldiers being lowered by ropes, like sheep to the
slaughter, onto the deck of the Mavi Marmara and the ensuing mayhem that led to death and
injury and an international upheaval, has lead me to ask: where is our Captain – our Moses of
wisdom and vision, who will lead us through an increasingly hostile world?
Living in Israel has its challenges. One feels a mixture of emotions – fear, rage, despair – upon
watching, helplessly, as disastrous events unfold before us. At the same time, we have our
personal lives to live – jobs, families and, yes, even the shul – requiring a level head, wisdom
and vision of our own.
We have little control over national events, but we do have much to say about how to manage
our little corner of Jewish life in East Talpiot at KMA. The most important issue facing our
congregation at the moment is the Egal process and upcoming vote on July 15. I call on all

members to participate in one way or another – and to do so with understanding of the issues
and respect for those who hold different views.
Regarding the coming year, our newly elected board has the collective experience, the
capability and (I hope) even the wisdom, to meet the challenges that await us – with the
cooperation and support of the congregation. The future of KMA is in our hands.
Or, as Pogo might have said, we have met the Captain and he is us.
As for our nation, we should continue to beseech the Holy One, as we do each Shabbat morning
in our Prayer for the Peace of the Nation: “….Send your light and truth to [the nation’s] leaders,
ministers and counselors, and direct them with good counsel before You. …. Amen, Selah.”

In the 1950s there existed a nationwide organization called the Student Zionist Organization
(SZO) on campuses throughout the United States. Diane (now Friedgut) had grown up in Fall
River, Massachusetts, was very active in Young Judea, and her family belonged to a conservative
synagogue. While a student at Pratt Institute studying to become a fashioner designer, she
became involved in SZO, and became president of the Pratt chapter in 1957.
Jac Friedgut was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and grew up there. He joined his mother in
Columbus, Ohio after high school and went to Ohio State University (OSU) where he received a BA
in mathematics. He was also president of Hillel for two years and the OSU chapter of SZO. He
became National Education director of SZO and wrote Roots of Zionism, a basic guidebook
distributed by SZO. Jac received a Masters degree at Princeton’s School of Public and
International Affairs as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and served as national treasurer of SZO.
In 1958, Diane and Jac met at an SZO convention in Long Island and began to date soon after.
They married in 1959 and settled on Staten Island, New York, until Diane finished her BA in Fine
Arts in 1960. Jac went to work for Citibank and worked on the report on National Banking in the
US that he subsequently presented in person to President John F. Kennedy at the White House in
1962.
In 1963 the Friedguts moved to New Rochelle, New York, and became involved in Beth El
synagogue where they founded the young couples club.
They made a sabbatical to Israel in 1967, where Jac worked as a consultant for the Israel Ports
Authority. Some years after his return to Citibank, he alerted Mayor (then Congressman) Ed Koch
to the fact that New York City was on the verge of bankruptcy. Jac then helped get the city back
on its feet. During that period, specifically in 1979, Jac was elected President of Beth El, with the
Mayor serving as Installing Officer.
In 1983 the Friedgut family, and their five children (ages 8 to 21) came to Israel; they bought an
apartment in East Talpiyot and ran into members of Moreshet Avraham they had known before.
Jac served as president of the synagogue from 1988 to the end of 1992; led (together with Rabbi
Reuven Hammer) fundraising for the building of the synagogue building; proposed the idea of
doing Tisha b'Av on the Tayelet; became president again in 1995 and half of 1996 (when he was
also Treasurer of the Israel Masorti movement); and then became synagogue president again
from 2003 to 2006 (initially alongside Marla Haber-Goldstein).
In 2000 Diane started the Women's Masorti Study Day with her mentor and spiritual guide,
Professor Alice Shalvi. "Each year, over 600 women of all ages from throughout Israel attend
these seminars." The days are held three times a year in regions and once a year as a National
seminar in Jerusalem. Diane has served since 1994 as liaison in Israel for the Women's League
for Conservative Judaism.
Today the Friedgut children are: Hallie, a widow with three children, who lives in Karnei Shomron
and is a social worker; Michelle who is married with three children, works for Intel and lives on
Moshav Orot; Teisha who is married with two children, works in radio, is an aspiring actress and

lives in New Jersey; Stacy who is married with four children, is a clinical psychologist who lives in
Jerusalem and is a member of Moreshet Avraham; and Ben-Ari, who is married with two children,
is a doctor and currently lives in Toronto.
