On Monday, October 19, KMA held a
modest ceremony to dedicate the KMA
Entrance Rose Garden in memory of
Goldene Blumberg, z”l, the late wife of
Masorti Foundation founder and friend of
KMA, Mr. Herschel Blumberg. We extend
our thanks to Mr. Blumberg for his
continued support of KMA. May the rose
garden extol the memory of Mr. Blumberg’s
beloved wife, Goldene, and beautify and
sweeten the entrance to KMA, for many
years to come.
As for Shakespeare, indeed, what is in a
name? As we look forward to our upcoming
evening of Naomi Shemer songs, sung by
Shuli Natan, on December 16, Shemer’s
Father’s Song (Shiro Shel Abba) comes to
mind, with its refrain: "Yi’baney, yi’baney,
yi’baney ha’mikdash." This refrain is based
on our morning prayer service, in which we
beseech G-d: “May it be Your will, Lord our
G-d and G-d of our ancestors, that the
Temple be speedily rebuilt (yi’baney
ha’mikdash) in our days…...”
Yet the “mikdash” referred to in Naomi
Shemer’s song is not the “Mikdash” referred
to in our prayers, though both share the
same name. On a recent visit to Naomi
Shemer’s childhood home, Kvutzat
Kinneret, we learned that the mikdash in
the song refers to the secular temple of the
rebuilt Land of Israel, imbued with a sense
of religious destiny. As noted by Avraham
Zigman, in his recently published book,
Midrash Naomi, “Yi’baney ha’mikdash” was
a traditional song that was not only sung by
the religious, but was also popular among
the pioneers who came to settle Eretz
Yisrael.
During the month of Hanukkah, one might
ponder the meaning of "Mikdash" in our
world today. In 165 BCE, the Maccabees
purified the defiled “Mikdash” and
rededicated it in the eight day ceremony
now recalled in our Hanukkah celebration.
According to Ayal Regev, in his book The
Sadducees and their Halakhah, from the
time of the ensuing Hasmonean dynasty
and up until the destruction of the Second
Temple, the Jewish people were divided

over the theological standing of the
Mikdash. The Sadducees held that the
Mikdash is the sole place in the world where
the divine manifests its presence. The
Pharisees, on the other hand, held that the
divine was manifest everywhere, thus
extending the range of the holy from the
Mikdash to the entire world.
After the destruction of the Second Temple,
only the theology of the Pharisees survived.
It is the one that modern day Jews continue
to ascribe to. Years ago, one of Rabbi
Abraham Isaac Kook’s students told me,
during a walk in the forest, about Rabbi
Kook’s belief that the divine is manifest in
everything. By way of example, he pointed
to the rocks on the ground before us and
said that even the lowly rock is evidence of
the divine presence, "hitgalut hashem."
Today, as I write these words, I ponder: if in
a lowly rock, how much more so in a garden
full of roses.

In Memory of Dr. Herb Alexander z"lIn Memory of Dr. Herb Alexander z"lIn Memory of Dr. Herb Alexander z"lIn Memory of Dr. Herb Alexander z"l By Rabbi Reuven HammerBy Rabbi Reuven HammerBy Rabbi Reuven HammerBy Rabbi Reuven Hammer
Ben Zoma: Who is wealthy? Whoever is content with what he has. Who is wise? Whoever learns
from all people. Who is honored? Whoever honors others. These all apply to Herb – he knew
that wealth was more than money and although full of knowledge always learned from others
and who, while honored, earned that through honoring others.
These statements take what we know and stands it on its head, something Herb delighted in
doing. Always looking at things from new and novel angles. Herb Alexander was one of the
first people we met when coming on Aliyah 36 years ago and since that time our lives have
been intertwined in so many ways. We shared our joys and we shared our sorrows. For us it was
a wonderful experience in the meaning of friendship. We did not always agree but that never
interfered with our closeness. Herb's English name when written in Hebrew was sometimes
mispronounced by people not as Herb but as Ha Rav. We often laughed about that. But it was
also appropriate. Herb would often call me and say that he wasn't calling me as a friend but as
his rabbi – but I often felt as if he were my rabbi as well – HaRav. Rav is a teacher and so was
Herb – a wonderful teacher in America at Dickenson – his students remained his students
throughout their lives – and a wonderful teacher when he became a guide. He taught the land
and taught Judaism and Zionism. I never failed to learn from him. For years we studied Talmud
together and he always came up with new insights into material I thought I knew. My children
loved to talk to him because he always had new slants on things. We often traveled together
and the one problem we had was that he would often take forever to decide on our next move –
where to go, what to do. But it wasn't because he was indecisive but because he saw things
from so many angles and wanted to explore them all. Ironically we had planned one more trip
together last year to Egypt that we had to postpone. By the time we could reschedule it, he was
not well enough to consider going but as usual he put in all the ideas and the planning of what
we will be doing. He will not be with us – yet he will be there. There never was a more inquiring
mind or one who came up with more novel ideas and solutions than Herb did. Where else
wound you find a Skinnerian behaviorist who believed in free will?
Herb was the driving force in our synagogue. For years he was responsible for the building and
did his best to make it beautiful. But he was also concerned about the synagogue itself, the
services, the programs. He wanted everything to be just so – to have the highest esthetic
value.Rabbi Barry Schlessinger wrote me an e-mail about that – let me share some of it with
you:

When I came 9 years ago, he was the house chair, a position he held until he and Leah moved to
their home on Alkaly. Herb taught me how a serious and dedicated volunteer and lay leader
should relate to his role and responsibility.
Herb, climbed to great heights- and I mean this literally. It was his self chosen job to set up the
shul’s tall ladder, rest it on a table or two and climb many, many meters to the dome in order to
change light bulbs.
He always did this and he did it with pride and a great feeling of accomplishment. It always
seemed to me that he was fearless.
I always valued our Friday morning conversations after davening. Herb, always shared with me
his very sincere concern for every aspect of the Shul.
And he was concerned that although we were an individual group, Masorti, that it should be
inclusive and open to the community. He always wanted everyone in the community to feel at
home there.
When we were together at his sukkah he shared some thoughts with his friends and what he
said was how fortunate he had been in life – fortunate in his career, fortunate in his aliyah and
his work here, fortunate in his family – in his late wife Rahel and their wonderful children and
grandchildren of whom he was inordinately proud, fortunate to have found Rahel Leah and the
Pederson children as a second family. And the Yamim Noraim that he was able to spend with
the family at synagogue and in our home was a wonderful time for him. These last few months
were so difficult because they deprived him of his freedom, his ability to go, to do, to
communicate freely. But he found the good in whatever he could. We are all grateful to Leah for
the extraordinary love and devotion that she lavished so effortlessly in those extremely difficult
days.
Let us remember him in his vigor, his times of running and climbing and excitedly explaining
his understand of life and living. Indeed, the rabbis said: The righteous even when they die are
called living. Herb – whose name was Haim – was certainly righteous and certainly remains
Haim – alive even now. May his memory be a blessing.

Rachel Leor and Susan Lazinger were served along with drinks while congregation members and
friends purchased approximately 40 cookbooks, some pausing to have them autographed.
The program began with the following speech by President Brian Negin.
"Tonight we launch the KMA cookbook: We're Cooking at Kehilat Moreshet AvrahamWe're Cooking at Kehilat Moreshet AvrahamWe're Cooking at Kehilat Moreshet AvrahamWe're Cooking at Kehilat Moreshet Avraham, edited and
compiled by our own Sybil Kaplan. Eleven months after the idea was born, we see the fruits of
the labors of many dedicated individuals in our community, who we wish to honor tonight.
"But first some context. Why make a big deal about a cookbook? Lara Rabinovitch writes, in her
article History of Jewish CookbooksHistory of Jewish CookbooksHistory of Jewish CookbooksHistory of Jewish Cookbooks:
"'What's big and long and treyf in places? The history of Jewish cookbooks. Long
before the Joy of Cooking was published in 1936, Jewish women were writing and
sharing their recipes and food traditions. Filled with recipes from gefilte fish to
oyster canapés to dafina, Jewish cookbooks are the single largest form of writing
by and for Jewish women. These cookbooks offer a revealing glimpse into the
everyday lives of Jews, and the range of cultural practices and religious customs
in the modern period.'"
Le'havdil, our KMA cookbook is 100% Kosher. But otherwise, it fits the description offered by
Ms. Rabinovitch – giving a window into the life of our community and our cultural practices.
"Our KMA cookbook is not only a community project. The cookbook is an ambassador of
goodwill in Israel and abroad, part of our efforts to 'brand' KMA and to build support, financial
and otherwise, for our Kehila. The cookbook is also a fundraiser in the sense that donations
made for copies directly benefit KMA. Your generous donations for copies of the cookbook are
very much appreciated.
Special mention should be made regarding Rabbi Barry. Without his consistent and constant
support of the project, it could not have been completed. Which brings us to Sybil Kaplan. I
know the trials and tribulations Sybil has been through in producing this, her ninth cookbook.
Sybil will briefly share some of her experiences with us tonight and thank and honor those who
helped make it possible. However, I do want to comment, as an objective outside observer:
without Sybil's experience, determination, brow-beating of those who needed brow-beating,
fervor and dedication, there would be no KMA cookbook. We therefore extend our thanks and
appreciation to you, Sybil, for all you have done, and for bringing to life We're Cooking We're Cooking We're Cooking We're Cooking ---- at at at at
Kehilat Moreshet AvrahamKehilat Moreshet AvrahamKehilat Moreshet AvrahamKehilat Moreshet Avraham."
–
Sybil was presented a framed copy of the cookbook jacket. She responded with this.

rolling. Soon after, we put out a note to the congregants asking for recipes and told them the
format in which we would like them to appear which no one wanted to follow. January 20, Alice Fierstein agreed to be my assistant, to contact contributors to clarify issues
with the recipes. January 25, Rahel Hammer graciously offered to do the art work for the
divider pages and recipes were coming in. I came up with the title, We’re Cooking at Kehilat
Moreshet Avraham. February 23, we knew about the format, the size and the spiral binding. All of March we called and emailed contributors with hundreds of questions to clarify
ingredients and instructions. How many servings does it make? How long do you sauté? How
much is a little oil? How many grams in that package? Where did you get this recipe? How big is
the can? Pesach we handed out the Pesach chapter as a teaser and all recipes were in. March 31,
the cookbook went to Jack Chesley for formatting. May 18, we told the contributors that
formatting was continuing. September 9, we had the cover done, and the book went to Donny
Finkel for preparing the book for publication. September 15, I saw the cookbook as a PDF file,
answered questions from Brian’s proofreading and did another proofreading. September 30, I saw the final version and rechecked corrections and did another proofreading. October 15, I prepared the list of contributors, amounting to 41.
"Sherry Abbey, David Brinn, Kolya Chesley, Saralee Shrell-Foxe, Lorie Glashofer and
Michael Gould each contributed one recipe. Gisela Claper, Rachel Leor, Bella Ramot and Judy
White each contributed two recipes. Karen Davis Abrams, Anita Bashary, Isaac Bendayan, Lila
Brodsky, Pauline Clein, Nechama Feder, Dvorah Finer, Peggy Frost, Dorothy Gale, Marla Haber
Goldstein, Hadassah Gordis, Lisa Clayton Jager, Anne Rothenberg, Telma Schwartz, Miryom
Shuman, and Phyllis and Zev Solomon all contributed three recipes each. Alice and Howie
Fierstein, Susan Lazinger, Norma Marx, Rayne Seymour, and Enid Wurtman contributed 4
recipes each. Adele Stewart Bushbib, Rena Magun, and Edith Paller contributed 5 recipes each.
David Breakstone, Orah Lipsky, and Shira Schlesinger contributed 6 recipes each. Rahel Hammer
and Danby Meital contributed 7 recipes each. Sylvia Kamowitz-Hareven contributed 9 recipes.
Natalie Mendelsohn contributed 12 recipes. And you will find 19 of my recipes – a grand total
of 169 recipes. Last week of October, Brian and Susan came to my home, to Rahel Hammer and to Alice
Fierstein to deliver first copies. Brian and I prepared the first errata sheet. Preparations for the
launching began soon after. Last week, I prepared another errata sheet. When I asked Brian what I should say tonight, he said talk about the excitement of
working on this collaborative effort with other congregants. I hope now that the book is done,
our contributors understand the significance of so many emails from Alice and myself to make

their recipes clear to users of the cookbook both here and abroad. Brian said to note the
challenges. The biggest challenge was coordinating other people’s schedules and trips abroad
and the holidays with finishing the cookbook. What are the rewards? Seeing all of you here,
having you buy the cookbook to help our congregation, reading the emails some of you have
sent me because you’ve seen what a team effort this has been – these are all the rewards. Thank you Allan & Marilyn Glick, Diane & Jac Friedgut, Barbara Mazer, Howard & Jean
Agid, Helen Kriegsfeld and Brian Negin and Susan Lazinger for your contributions in memory of
Sylvia Goldberg Leibowitz to support the initial printing. Thank you, Alice, for a yeoman’s job
of nudging to get all the fine points answered. Alice and Howie are in the States now on a visit.
Thank you, Rahel, for a beautiful job of divider page art. Thank you, Brian, for having faith in
me to carry out this project, for choosing the clip art for the cover, for doing all of the
coordinating with the formatting and printer, and for always being there to support this project.
Thank you Rav Barry and the board for your support with this project. Thank you, husband
Barry, for being patient when night after night after night, you would ask, what are you doing
and I would respond – working on the cookbook. Thank you, my daughter, Elissa, for coming
to share this evening with me. I hope you will enjoy this copy of the cookbook and make a lot of
the recipes."
The audience then viewed the movie, "No Reservations."
