IT’S FLU SEASON AGAIN

Berry Medical Centre is conducting their annual Flu Immunisation Clinic this month.

This is a simple and easy way to protect you and your family.

We will be using the new Quadrivalent stock (4 strains)

The Clinic will run for a week commencing Monday 1st May to Friday 5th May inclusive, from 8:30am to 9:00am.

It is not recommended to not give the vaccine before this time, as your immunity may run

out before the flu season is over.

All patients of the practice are invited to arrive between these times to receive your Fluvax injection, no appointment is necessary. If you are over 65, or have a chronic illness the

vaccine is free of charge, otherwise a fee of $18 will apply.

Agreement onLayout of Berry District Park On the evening Tuesday 4 April the Berry District Park Review Group (BDPRG) hosted a workshop for key stakeholders at the Berry Public School Hall. The objective of the evening was for stakeholders to determine whether it was possible to devise any layouts for the park, which incorporated the present and future aspirations of the key stakeholders. Working in groups with large scale maps and cut outs of various park uses, the stakeholders amicably formulated layouts, which met their needs. Discussions between stakeholders were respectful and constructive.Importantly, staff from Shoalhaven City Council, RMS, planning consultant Locale and landscape architect Ayling Drury were present to answer technical questions and assist with discussions. The BDPRG would like to thank representatives of these organisations for devoting a Tuesday evening to the community. The BDPRG will now focus on converting the layouts conceived at the workshop into a clear plan that can be exhibited to the broader Berry community during May and June. Following incorporation of feedback from the community, the updated plan will be put to Council for adoption. The BDPRG then aims to work with Council to develop the detail of the plan to a point where it is shovel ready.

Rockfi eld ParkMore than a hundred people, including a number of councillors, attended a Land and Environment Court onsite hearing on Monday, March 20. The hearing continued at the Court in Sydney on the following Tuesday and Wednesday, but was then adjourned until 26 April. The proposed development consists of a 42 unit hotel and a wedding/function centre, both of which are prohibited in an RU1 zone. The application claims that the development is an eco-tourist resort (permissible in the zone) despite describing it in the application as an “archetypal type of resort hotel”. The application has also been amended by relabelling the function centre as a restaurant (permissible in the zone), whilst at the same time stating that the restaurant may be booked for wedding functions. The development proposal, which has been active for three years, was last year refused by both Council and the Joint Regional Planning Panel. However, in spite of the obvious implausibility of the claims in the amended application, the rules of the Court and the applicant’s unlimited expenditure on lawyers will work against Council’s ability to defend the case.If the appeal is upheld and the application is approved, it will set a precedent for developers to gain approval for function centres in zones where the legislation states they are prohibited.

The Alliance are in the middle of producing an upgraded web site which should be live by the beginning of June. We have come a long way since the Berry Alliance was fi rst formed over 20 years ago to serve the Berry Community by planning for the future, assisting Berry community groups, co-ordinating events & volunteers and making representations to all levels of Government. The Town Crier was started by the Alliance as an effective way to keep the community informed of everything that was going on in our town and things that affected our community. Community groups were encouraged to utilise the paper to inform the community about what they were doing and to recruit members to their group. It started as a quarterly magazine that was distributed free to the community and increased frequency over the years to a monthly paper. Other things have improved with it. It is much bigger, the quality is much better, many more are printed and it is distributed free to letterboxes in and around Berry, P.O. Boxes and businesses. It is still free. Costs are covered entirely by advertisers, we receive no grants. It is a good business plan that serves our community well. The Alliance encourages community members to buy local as well as utilise local trades because that money is more likely to be kept in our town. Some ten years ago we introduced an electronic version of the Town Crier and posted it to the Berry Alliance website. This website is now very tired and cannot perform everything we want it to do so we are planning on launching the much-improved web site by June. It will have each edition of the Town Crier on it; all the old archived editions on it

Upgraded Web Site and other changesfor the Berry Alliance and Town Crier

and have a search facility to allow anyone to search through the copies for words, names, sentences etc. We will also be able to post items of interest that are urgent on the new website (as well as our Facebook page).CCB. The Alliance was approached over 17 years ago by the then Berry CCB (Community Consultative Body) for Council as they felt that we were in a better position to take this role. The Alliance agreed and Council advertised the proposed change then appointed the Berry Alliance as the CCB. We continued in this additional role until we were approached by a new group (the now Berry Forum) saying that they would like to be the CCB. We discussed it with Council and resigned from the CCB role to allow Council to go through the process of advertising the position and subsequently appointing the Berry Forum as their new CCB.The Berry Alliance offered the Berry Forum suffi cient space in the Town Crier each month to publicise meetings and matters to do with their Council CCB role as well as a donation of $1,000 to assist them in setting up.Since then we have been working hard and concentrating on our other tasks –• Assisting Berry Community groups.• Raising money and donating to assist

Community groups when needed.• Holding the annual Community Group

Leaders’ Get Together where there is a won-derful cooperation and understanding built.

• Building footpaths and cycleways. (The 1 metre wide footpaths along Alexandra Street outside the Showground, along Victoria Street outside the Showground, along Clarence Street outside Berry Public School were all organised and built by the Berry Alliance (with assistance from grants that we applied for and Council.)

• And of course, continuing to improve the Town Crier.

Sustainability is something we have been concentrating on including purchasing Keep Cups and calico bags “For a Sustainable Berry” and giving these away to the com-munity. And more recently assisting Boo-merang Bags by purchasing them a special overlocker and donating some money. We have also purchased another 750 bags with the Berry Alliance “For a sustainable Berry” logo on them.

This month, the column is taking a break from the plastics conundrum to focus instead on one of our favourite garden visitors. In 2013 BirdLife Australia ran a poll with fi nalists of fi fty-two popular species to discover Australia’s top bird. To the surprise of many, it wasn’t the kookaburra, the magpie or the cockatoo that took top prize, but the Superb Fairy-wren, otherwise known as the Blue Wren.We are blessed in Berry to have a diverse bird population, and residents will likely be familiar with these little birds. Only the male birds wear the distinctive blue plumage to attract mates, with females more dun in colour to better camoufl age themselves from predators. These birds live in family groups, so when you see one bird there will probably be a few more nearby. Wrens aren’t strong fl iers, but use their long legs to move around in a series of hops, seeking food and shelter. In recent years, well-intentioned programs across Australia to eradicate invasive plant species such as Lantana had the unfortunate effect of destroying habitat that had been adopted by small bird species, after the loss of native vegetation from land clearing. There are several recognized avian biodiversity “hotspots” within close proximity to Berry. Smaller remnants of original native vegetation, such as that at Berry Hospital, Moeyan Hill, Drawing Room Rocks and Bundewallah Rainforest offer habitat close to town. Berry

has a reputation as “The Town of Trees” which is great for our larger species of birds. Berry’s gardens can attract up to thirty-fi ve species of birds, whilst surrounding areas may have a bird list as high as seventy-fi ve species. By diversifying our garden plantings the township of Berry can become an active link in local wildlife corridors, offering a variety of habitats for a wide spectrum of bird species. To foster habitat for Blue wrens, Orange Eastern Spinebills, Yellow Throated Thornbills, Silver Eyes, and other small native birds, here are some tips for improving bird numbers and diversity:• Create welcoming spaces by planting

diverse, locally native species, especially small fl owering plants. Larger nurseries sell only a limited range of plants; by seeking our smaller, specialist nurseries you can fi nd unusual and interesting species. A few nurseries worth visiting are located at Colo Vale (Wariapendi Native Nursery), Heathcote (Sydney Wildlife Nursery), Agars Lane, Berry (Coolangatta Native Nursery), Tomerong (Wirin Wirra), Kangaroo Valley (Kangaroo Valley Nursery), and (Broughton Village) Hathaway Hedges.

• Create density by planting in clumps or hedges to give birds protection from aggressive birds and pets, and offer nesting sites. Choose a variety and complexity of plants that are insect attracting, nectar

rich, fruit producing, and with a variety of seasonal fl owering. Prickly plants also offer great protection. Best avoided are the showy hybrids, as they attract big honeyeaters, which outcompete smaller birds. Some useful species: Local tea tree (leptospernum), Correas, Crowe, Weeping Baeckia, small Melaleucas, native grasses, Kangaroo Paw, Lilly Pilly, Blueberry Ash, along with small varieties of Grevillea, Banksia, Hakea and Acacia.

• Add a birdbath, birds will use it close to shelter of plant cover. Allow birds to forage naturally rather than feeding them. Bird feeders attract Indian Mynahs and rats, as does pet food. Feeding trays encourage birds to become dependent on you, rather than foraging for a more varied and appropriate diet. Protect birds from pets as best as you can, by keeping pets indoors over night and put bell on your cat’s collar.

The Whole Art of the BookWhy was the best paper made from the worn out clothes of peasants? Why is gold leaf so thin that it is measured in atoms and cannot be touched with the hands? Why do printers do everything upside down and backwards? Why is the art of bookbinding itself surely the most complex of all hand crafts, as beguiling and enchanting today as it was when it was invented on the banks of the Nile, 2,000 years ago?All these questions will be answered by our May ADFAS lecturer, Dominic Riley, who is an international bookbinder, artist, writer, lecturer and teacher. He studied at the London College of Printing, has worked in the USA and UK and has various binderies in London, New York and San Francisco. The lecture to be presented by Dominic on 18 May 2017 at 7.30 p.m. in the Uniting Church Hall, Berry is “Through the Round Window” and tells the fascinating story of everything that makes a traditional hand bound book.Next day on 19 May, Dominic will run a Half Day Focus Day commencing at 10 a.m. on Design Matters: the Creation of Fine Bindings, plus a demonstration of Bookbinding. Sold-out audience for Berry Conversations on April 2. Bob Brown and Peter Thompson to feature at August 20 event.More than 210 people - a sell-out - packed the Berry Public School Hall on the afternoon of April 2nd to hear Garry McDonald and his good friend, the theatre producer Christine Dunstan, in witty, sometimes serious, often hilarious and always entertaining conversation. A late change of venue became necessary when the constant rain made parking at the Berry Sport & Recreation Centre impossible. The Berry Conversations Organizing Committee is very grateful to the School for their willingness to come to the rescue barely forty-eight hours before curtain time, as well as to Berry Rotary for its help with a complicated set-up and take-down of the venue. We are thrilled to announce that the speakers for the next Berry Conversation will be Bob Brown, the former Senator and Parliamentary Leader of the Australian Greens, and Peter Thompson, former ABC broadcaster, director of the Centre for Leadership, and author of Bob Brown of the Franklin River (1985).

The 11th annual Berry Celtic Festival this year features “The Isle of Man” and headlines lots of new entertainment including spectacular medieval knights jousting. Jousting is not for the faint hearted, as the heavily armoured noble knights gallop at each other on horseback with lances poised, aiming to unseat their opponent. Hear the thunder of hooves and the clashing of lances. In the background, other knights resplendent in shining armour will be staging battles in hand to hand combat demonstrating skillful swordplay. The Berry Celtic Festival kicks off with the grand street parade through Berry at 9.30am, with pipe bands marching in all of their distinctive kilts, together with representatives of the all of the Clans, medieval knights, Scottish Terrier dogs, motor cycles and vintage cars making their way to Berry Showground. On arriving at the Berry Showground, comes the marching of the massed bands with the heavenly sound of the bagpipes reverberating around the grounds … you need to be there to feel the thrill of the occasion. A day full of entertainment follows with musical items, pipe bands, Celtic fi ddlers, highland dancing, enchanted singing, and of course, the battle of the medieval knights. There are also lots of Celtic merchandise stalls to view. Words cannot describe an event such as this … just come and watch the noble knights battle it out and enjoy yourself! The Isle of Man is a small island nation in the Irish Sea, full of Celtic origins with hills and glens, cliffs and picturesque harbours, and well known today for its annual ‘TT’ motor cycle races and the tail-less Manx cat.The Berry Celtic Festival is a fundraising project of the Rotary Club of Berry supported by Shoalhaven City Council. Entertainment continues all day until around 4pm. Entry is $10 for adults, with children under 15 years free. Saturday 27 May Berry Showground.

BERRYPRESCHOOLWe’re ready for Term 2 at Berry PreschoolWelcome back to all our lovely children and their families for a fun-packed second term at preschool. We wrapped up Term 1 with a few more exciting and educational activities, including our Zoo-to-You Program, where we learnt about the colourful world of marine life and the fascinating creatures that live in rock pools. It’s always an entertaining session with the educators from Shoalhaven Zoo.In the last week of term, our Wednesday children were lucky to go on an excursion on a big bus to the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre to see the stage version of the much-loved children’s book Diary of a Wombat. We had the bonus of a pre-show talk from Trent from Shoalhaven Zoo and Miss May the wombat, who apparently had a baby wombat in her pouch! All preschool parents were busy selling Easter eggs to raise money for our preschool. Thank-you to all families for helping with this delicious activity, and especially to the Bizeray family, who won a huge box of Cadbury Favourites for their efforts in selling the most eggs.We fi nished the term with an excursion to Berry Public School on the Friday to take part in their Easter hat parade. We enjoyed parading our hats after the big kids and seeing the school that many of us will be heading off to next year. It was a fun way to end the term. Many thanks to the school for inviting us to be part of this event.Looking ahead, we will be holding a fundraising cake stall outside Berry Pharmacy on Saturday 13 May. This will include a Mother’s Day raffl e with fi rst prize being a $100 voucher from Shady Fig and second prize being a Cadbury chocolate hamper. Also on the fundraising front, we will soon be selling Entertainment Books, with the addition of some local Berry businesses. Please contact the preschool if you would like to purchase one.‘Til next time!

Berry Courthouse Conservation CommitteeThe courthouse is looking great and the new grass we had planted in early January has really taken. Many thanks to TURFCO once again for their kind donation with this. The Manchurian Pears at the front of the building came back from a necessary hard prune last year and are just as we wanted them, and beautiful without detracting from the magnifi cent building which had been re-painted last year.Gardens are about to be revamped again with some necessary pruning and shaping of leggy and intrusive plants as well as some work on some of the hedges. The Committee are indebted to a dedicated group of volunteers from the Berry Garden Club for the hours of work each week or fortnight that they contribute to making the gardens so attractive. We thank you all past and present. In particular, the Committee would like to recognise and thank Trish Knevitt who has been both the Berry Garden Club garden volunteer co-ordinator for approximately 15 years and on the Management Committee for nearly the same length of time. Trish has stood down from the Committee and has now also stood down as the Co-ordinator. The volunteers from the Garden Club are continuing but we will all miss Trish. Trish was a passionate Co-ordinator who loved and tended to the Courthouse Gardens so very well and as if they were her own. She loves those gardens. The Committee cannot thank Trish enough for her invaluable contribution.Volunteers: If you would like to assist the Conservation Committee with their work please get in touch with us by emailing or phoning. We would love to see you join in and you too can get that passion for conserving and looking after such a wonderful historic building.

Want more Freedom?A common message I hear in the media these days is that if you want to experience life to the full then you need to be free. Whether that be fi nancially free, relationally free, vocationally free or even sexually free. The idea basically says that if you are in a position to do whatever you want whenever you want then you will experience the best of life. I think this theory works well if you are the kind of person who always makes the right choices. However if you are like me (and I suspect every other human on the planet) this is not always the case. Jesus told a story one day about a young man who wanted his freedom (Luke 15:11-32). He asked his father for half of his estate. Essentially, he was saying to his father that he wished him dead so he could receive his share of the inheritance. His father who was far more generous and gracious than me said yes. This young man took the money he was given and spent it on wild living. He eventually runs out of money and freedom. He fi nds himself stuck now in the consequences of his choices. No longer free and no longer connected to his family, he plucks up the courage to return and ask for his father’s forgiveness. Instead of receiving rejection by his father, he is embraced and reinstated to his place as son. The father had been waiting for his return and essentially says that he has never stopped being his son.Freedom in the way the world sees it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I think that experiencing the best that life has to offer starts with knowing that we are fully loved no matter what by the creator of the universe. This knowledge removes all fear, frees us from self-doubt and reminds us that whatever is happening to us or whatever choices we have made we are never alone. True freedom is found in trusting yourself to God because you know He loves you and will be working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). If you’d like to speak to someone about what it means to fi nd your identity and joy in trusting your life to Jesus, please get in contact with one of us at Berry Community Church. You can fi nd our details on our website berrycommunitychurch.org or turn up to one of our services 9.30am or 5pm Sundays.

BERRY MEN’S SHED

BIG CROWD ATTENDS HEALTH TALK

Last month’s Health Talk was attended by over 90 guests at the Berry Uniting Church, including a number of members from other Men’s Sheds. The excellent talk by Stuart covered all aspects of this debilitating disease and helped to inform our guests on how to look out for early signs of Alzheimer’s developing. Our next Health Talk will focus on current legal requirements that may affected senior members of the community. Details of the talk will be provided in the next issue. Our fi rst Scholarship presentation will take place at the end of April. Two students from TAFE ILLAWARRA will be awarded at a special presentation night to be held at the Bomaderry Bowling Club. At the Shed we are making and repairing looks of items including a beautiful dolls house on behalf of Zonta. We are also trying to build up our stocks for our annual Garage sale later this year. The Shed at 146 North Street is open on Tuesday and Thursday from 9.00am and visitors are most welcome.

PROUDLY SUPPORTING OUR TOWN AND COMMUNITY FOR OVER 30 YEARS

Boomerang Bags Berry will hold their launch on World Environment Day, Monday 5th June, so please put the date in your diaries. To help us celebrate, Power FM will broadcast their morning show live in Broughton Court from 9.30am – 12.00pm and then we will be joined by Mayor Amanda Findley at 10.30am for the launch. You will also get to meet The King & Queen of Green who are coming to town to remind us that the environment is precious and fi lling it with plastic rubbish upsets the fairies, the fi sh, the fi elds and the fi ne country we live in. Their Majesties, through theatrical demonstration, will deliver an important message to raise awareness about the environment in a fun way; great for kids, so bring the littlies along! After months of cutting, sewing, ironing and printing we now have in storage 1,500 bags with many others in various stages of completeness out there in the community. However, our growing group is still busy adding to that number which will be needed to make a decent impact when they appear in the shops. There has been an excellent response from the retailers we have spoken with and we are pleased to have the support of the IGA, Emporium, the shops in Broughton Court and in particular the Berry Pharmacy who has taken on the role of providing a drop-off spot for donations and completed “homework”. Thank you to Jane for offering to showcase Boomerang Bags nearer the time of the launch.A huge contributor to our Boomerang Bag community has been the Berry Men’s Shed. Thanks to them, we now have two superb purpose made units for the Boomerang Bags – so, if you forget your bag you will be able to dip into the box, borrow one of ours, and bring it back next time you’re shopping.Boomerang Bag Communities are spreading around the world and looking at the atlas we can see that they are now stitching bags in Iceland! Well, that’s great news for the environment. We need to keep the conversation going, so please tell your friends and if you can spare some time at home, or by coming to our twice monthly meetings, then we would truly appreciate the help; many hands make light work as they say, and we need more hands…There will be a full programme for the launch in the June edition of the Town Crier.Thank you to the Berry Alliance for support and encouragement and proving that communities working together can make change happen for the better.

SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is reminding Shoalhaven residents to change their smoke alarm batteries.NSW RFS Superintendent Mark Williams said local brigades are concerned that some people still do not understand the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes. “Smoke alarms and a home escape plan can give you the early warning and crucial moments needed to safely escape a fi re. “Only working smoke alarms can alert you and your family, so it is vital that you test your smoke alarms once a month and change the batteries annually.” The NSW RFS and Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) recommend all residents change their smoke alarm batteries at the same time they wind their clocks back at the end of Daylight Savings. Anyone who hasn’t changed their smoke alarm batteries in the past year should do so as soon as possible. “All Shoalhaven residents should take just a few minutes this weekend to test their smoke alarm and check the batteries, to increase their family’s chance of surviving a house fi re,” Supt. Williams said. “The cooler months are the deadliest time of year for house fi res in Shoalhaven, as people spend more time indoors using heating, lighting and electrical appliances. “There are two main types of smoke alarms available – photoelectric and ionization - it’s important that everyone has suffi cient smoke alarms in their home and ensures they are regularly checked. “Whilst these alarms are both are in line with Australian Standard AS 3786, research demonstrates that photoelectric alarms appear to provide a faster warning for detecting smoke, and may increase the opportunity for early warning,” said Superintendent Williams. “A house fi re can strike at any time and a working smoke alarm could mean the difference between life and death for your family.” Contact the Shoalhaven Fire Control Centre for more information about home fi re safety or go to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.

“Scarves, mittens, and hats are a great way to express your personality in the cold weather.” - Brad Goreski

Saturday 6th May from 8:30am will provide a grand opportunity to purchase scarves and beanies at our Mothers’ Day Street Stall situated at Broughton Walk. We will also be located at the CWA Stall at the Celtic Festival on May 27th. Cold weather has arrived and there could be nothing better than to sit by the fi re, book in hand, with a jam-laden scone or two purchased from our large range of sumptuous goodies. Looking forward to meeting you on one of these cold days. At the April meeting, we were privileged to have as our guest speaker Cindy Johnson, South Coast Area coordinator for the volunteer organisation “Look Good Feel Better.” This is a national service program dedicated to teaching cancer patients how to manage their appearance related to the side effects of cancer. They provide free 2 ½ hour workshops for women, men and teens, and products are donated by various cosmetic fi rms. This successful program is operating in 25 countries.Once again Berry ladies have been working hard, not only to stock up the craft for street stalls, but to support community events with “the ministry of the interior.” Sandwiches were made, cakes baked, tea and coffee poured. Berry Conversations’ fi rst event of the year required sandwiches for afternoon tea. Umm, delicious! Cup Cake Day at the Nowra School of Arts, and the Essential Learning and Training program in Youth Week got the same treatment. The great variety of cupcakes certainly looked delicious and very temptingIt is fascinating to know and understand how different cultures manage their families. In our study of Nepal, we found that infants are carried on their mother’s back held by a

shawl tied tightly across her chest. Babies are breast-fed on demand until they are displaced by a new baby or old enough to share a bed with their siblings. Infants often wear amulets to protect them from supernatural forces. They line a baby’s eye with kohl to prevent eye infection. Mothers are the primary carers but children are socialised by their siblings, cousins and grandparents. Neighbours are entitled to discipline, instruct and cuddle. From early childhood children are expected to contribute labour to the household. Money is often a problem and only the sons are schooled as it is believed that education is a waste when spent on girls. How fortunate we are to live in this country.

Now for a bit of Trivia:The tradition of the Easter bunny bringing chocolate eggs or other treats to children appears to have originated in the US around 1700 when German migrants who settled in Pennsylvania brought along their egg-laying “Osterhase.” Children made nests in which this creature could secretly lay its coloured eggs. Easter Bunny records in Australia go back to the 1920s. These days an endangered marsupial, the bilby, is being recruited as the Easter Bilby. He may well give the bunny a run for its money, but we reckon that the Easter Bunny has no worries about becoming extinct.

A MONSTER SALEHas been and gone and the club raised a record amount from the Pre-Loved Clothing Sale held on April 2nd. And if you happen to notice a number of ladies around Berry looking particularly stylish, chances are that they shopped well on that day, choosing from a very attractive range of clothing donated to the club. We felt that this year’s ‘collection’ was of a really high standard, and included a number of glamorous hats suitable for weddings or racedays. But one customer swept up several to use as a very classy wall decoration! So we thank the people of Berry for their generous support, once again, and assure them the proceedings of the sale will be put to good use by the club.

THANK YOU AGAINWe thank the speaker at the last dinner meeting, Sue Gray, for her enlightening talk on her experiences nursing in remote Indigenous communities – and the many guests who came to hear her. Some shocking facts came to light and we all felt much better informed on this heartbreaking subject. The Coachhouse was fair bursting at the seams!

BOOKS BACK!Yes, the ever popular Zonta Book Stall returned to Broughton Mall on Friday 21st April and will continue on an irregular basis thereafter. Watch this space for future dates so you can keep up with your reading.

GARDEN MATTERSThe club has for the past year or so been taking care of a small vegetable garden at the Nowra women’s refuge, supplying fresh produce for the residents and their children. Now that the weather has settled somewhat, the garden has been renovated and replanted ready for the next season.

DINNER MEETINGAs our May meeting includes the AGM and election of offi cers for the coming year, this evening will be closed to guests. Future meetings will be open to anyone interested in the club, and we welcome all comers.

Did you know that Berry Public School now has one of the highest proportions in the state of students studying ethics? With more kids than ever wanting to enrol this year we are on the hunt for new volunteer teachers. Could you be an ethics teacher for our thriving program at Berry Public School on Wednesday Mornings for 1hr each week for 2017?Some of our fabulous ethics teachers moved on at the end of last year and we are now seeking 3 new volunteers so that classes can continue for each year group in 2017. We would also love some additional teachers to become qualifi ed to cover the inevitable holidays. So even if you can’t commit to each week, please read on! Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profi t organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a two-day workshop (held in Wollongong, Narooma, Ulladulla or Sydney) and short online modules. Lesson ma-terials are provided. Computer literacy and access to a printer is a must. Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be willing to commit to at least a year of teaching. In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree res-pectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure. Children discuss topics like: • imagining how others feel • how do we treat living things? • what is laziness? • how do we disagree in a respectful way? • fairness. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au or contact me, I’m the ethics coordinator for the school this year and can be reached via [email protected] or 0413 202 425.Many thanks and looking forward to hearing from you

PLANTPROPAGATIONNURSERY

Berry & District Garden Club NewsSECRETARY - GAIL PATON ON 0413 893 508 OR VISIT US ON www.berrygardens.org.au

Days are shorter, nights are colder and our streetscapes are being repainted with burnished hues of red, orange and yellow as the foliage of deciduous trees begins to turn. Autumn has arrived in Berry. The bold, late-summer fl owering tibouchinas, however, are reluctant to give way, still punctuating the streets with their eye-catching, tall purple mantles. An occasional low purple fl ash reminds us that there are other choices for smaller gardens, such as the purple ‘Groovy Baby’ or pink and white ‘Cool Baby’. Slightly larger at 60cm, and almost always in fl ower, is the beautiful ‘Peace Baby’ with white fl owers and pink stamens. Autumn is a busy season in the garden. It is a time for pruning, feeding, planting before the soil gets too cold, and weeding - an especially onerous task this year after all the rain. Club volunteers have been kept very busy in our plant propagation “nursery” fi lling up and tending the shelves. If you are rethinking your garden and removing signifi cant plants, get in touch. We may be able to add them to our stock. Our stall at the Berry Gardens Festival is very popular, providing both the interesting and the now hard-to-get old favourites. We are very motivated, working hard to “grow” funds for the establishment of the new park off George Street when the RMS allows access. Deciduous trees, selected last year, are still waiting to be planted. If you are looking to plant a new deciduous tree, now is the time to visit a nursery to choose a specimen with good colour. The new-style persimmon “Fuyu”, as well as being a smaller tree, provides both fruit and glorious autumn foliage. Our fi ve night “High Country Autumn Colours” tour through Tumut, Bright and Beechworth leaves on 28 April, returning on 3 May. Inspired by the mature plantings

During the school holidays, the volunteers took the opportunity on a fi ne Thursday morning to collect fruits and seeds for the children to propagate next term. The most interesting plant that we found in fruit was the Bolwarra (Eupomatia laurina). Bolwarra is an erect shrub 2-5 metres with loose arching stems. The leaves are large and lush glossy green held on zig-zag stems. The unusual primitive fl owers are single and the fl ower is composed of stamens rather than petals. They have a very distinct strong smell that attracts a tiny weevil to pollinate the fl owers. Each fl ower only appears for 1 day, opening early in the morning and falling off by evening. All plants in the area fl ower within a few short weeks around December and January. The fruits are round green berries which swell and turn from green to yellow and then brown or purple when ripe.Bolwarra can be grown in a shady site in well composted soil. Pruning keeps the plant compact.

we will have seen, club members may also be visiting a nursery on their return. The subject of our May guest lecture is the potato. No longer just the humble “spud”, potatoes are the fourth most important food crop for humans. Our Guest Speaker, Dr Keith Houston, will take us on a journey that begins by tracing the evolution of the Solanaceae and ends in John o’Groats, Scotland, where varieties of potatoes we eat today were developed. “Rambles with Potatoes” will provide fascinating and sometimes tragic insights into the human story. Visitors are most welcome to join us on this journey. Our next meeting will be held in St Luke’s Church Hall in Princess St on Tuesday, 16 May at 7.30pm. To fi nd out more about our club, please contact our secretary, Gail Paton, on 0413 893 508 or visit us on www.berrygardens.org.au

LANDCARE BERRYA Quiet Achiever:Barry Virtue, the previous site co-ordinator for Broughton Vale, is leaving the Berry district. Barry and his friend, Dave Johnson set up the Plant Propagation Nursery (affectionately known as Plant Prop) at Berry Public School in the mid 1990s.Barry was a teacher at Berry Public School at that time, and he and Dave prepared a program to give children opportunities to gain practical skills in plant propagation, as an extension to the more formal classroom Environmental Science lessons.Barry had always wanted to encourage young children to have an appreciation and understanding of the natural world around them as well as an understanding of the principles of conservation. The school nursery provided the means and the solution for real and practical experiences to achieve this still very necessary aim.Under Barry’s guidance, and as joint ventures with the community, the children entered Environmental Competitions, and in 2007 Berry Public School won The Regional Landcare Education Award. Over the years Barry’s pupils grew and supplied thousands of plants for Landcare sites, National Tree Planting Days, Camp Quality, Berry Sport and Recreation Camp, Conservation Volunteers projects in Berry as well as Gerringong, Shoalhaven Heads and Albion Park. More recently, Plant Prop has been supplying plants to Fulton Hogan for the Foxground Berry Bypass, Illawarra Conservation Volunteers and Berry Bushlinks projects.Barry’s knowledge and expertise about plants and birds have been greatly appreciated on seed collecting forays with Plant Prop and

the Berry and Illawarra Landcare volunteers. The seeds collected are either stored in The Seed Bank or planted out in The Living Tree Bank. This has resulted in the Plant Prop’s having over 6000 plants of known local provenance including a range of ground covers, shrubs and trees that are available to anyone who wishes to grow them.Barry has always had the education of the children in mind, and, most recently, he initiated an article in The Town Crier to promote the activities of the children at Berry Public School Plant Propagation Nursery to the local community.Barry has been a facilitator at 2 community workshops for Leon Fuller’s project “Growing Illawarra Natives”. The community website will provide information and planting guides for local gardeners to know which local plants will best suit the specifi c requirements for their gardens. Barry’s local knowledge of the fl ora and fauna of the area has been of great value to Berry Landcare and he will be greatly missed.
