The Community Consultative Body (CCB) for Berry is holding a Public Meeting to discuss the way forward for a detailed Strategic Plan for our Town.Shoalhaven City Council have requested that Towns do a Strategic Plan and are still preparing a Template for doing this. In the interim this fi rst meeting will discuss the best way of going about this important (and large) task. With all the work currently underway with the Highway upgrade our Town is currently undergoing a lot of changes. This will continue into the future and those changes can be good or bad and can afford opportunities for the community to improve our town and indicate to Council what our community sees as our future and what is required and desired to fulfi l those desires. This Community Meeting will also be an opportunity for people to make suggestions on the best way to gather together a leadership group and a variety of ways to consult the community - ie Public Meetings, Surveys, FaceBook page consultation and feedback, Steering Committees and other methods. There are already some serious plans and ideas for future improvements to our town including the Rotary proposal for an Adventure Playground near the Skatepark on North Street; long term parking (including for buses and vehicles with trailers) along North Street; the re-location of the Riding Club from their current location on North Street; a variety of new footpaths and other improved infrastructure in and around Town.

Since the recent sale of Cottee’s Launderette business in Kiama there has been a lot of activity which has gained the interest of the Kiama locals as well as residents, holiday house owners and cleaners from Berry to Shellharbour who are curious to know about the new business owner, new services and if the existing launderette will change the services provided for over 30 years to the Kiama Municipality and Northern Shoalhaven community.

You may already know Angela Burton who operated a very successful small cleaning business in these areas. Angela specialised in mid to high end holiday houses with linen and medical practices for over 2 years but is now concentrating all her efforts into Kiama Laundry Services – formerly Cottee’s

Launderette located at 140 Terralong Street Kiama. We recently spoke with Angela about the existing business and the new services she plans to add. Firstly I am very aware of the level of service that the Cottee’s provided to the community for over 30 years. During the fi rst month of operation I have reassured all of our regular customers that were so loyal to Mrs Cottee that we will continue to provide all services that they are used to. The public self serve and coin operated washers and dryers are still in place and available at the same prices with a wash dry and fold service available. We also provide separate coin operated self serve machines for industrial work wear and also offer a wash, dry and fold service.

So what’s new at Kiama Laundry Services? Next time you pop in you will professionals with years of dedicated laundry experience and a wealth of knowledge in stain identifi cation and removal. A premium holiday house linen service is already in place backed up with Australian and locally made eco commercial laundry chemicals and new state of the art washers and dryers by Electrolux sourced through and provided by another Australian based company with local technical support. Kiama Laundry Services only support local and Australian based suppliers. Angela was overwhelmed by the support she received and the rapid growth of her cleaning business by the local residents and other local small Australian owned businesses back in 2013 “I felt as though I had been embraced by the town” she said. So to honour Mrs Cottee there is a new Cottee’s Corner at the front of the shop with a framed portrait and one of the original perspex signs framed by Chris Evans in pride of place. “I think it’s the right thing to do as I made a pledge to the family that I would continue the service of over 30 years to the community” says Angela.

Other services coming to Kiama Laundry Services are a pick up and delivery hand ironing service plus a clothing alteration and repair service Monday to Friday. Plus monthly specials and loyalty offer cards.

Kiama Laundry Services total focus is on service and care, professionalism and competitive pricing.

We could say enthusiasm was behind the great turnover in the CWA Tea Rooms at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Approximately 3,500 scones were baked and sold daily and the grand total, blitzing the previous total, was 46,900. It isn’t only the aroma of freshly baked scones that draws the show goers but the warmth of the CWA ladies serving up this delicious treat of hot scones, jam and fresh cream.

A scone is dough of excellence, but ere I take one off the trayto savour its rare succulenceI ask: Is it CWA?It promises to be a busy year with a number of functions and street stalls set in place and once again the enthusiasm of members can be seen. Scarves, beanies, baby knits, tea towels and other craft items are well under way, and a call has gone out for preserves and baked goodies in readiness for our fi rst stall in May. The Combined CWA Choir is in practice mode for a variety of engagements including the Shoalhaven Eisteddfod. No time for idle hands or vocal chords. The Craft Wednesdays are happy,

bustling and friendly times when the ladies join together to stitch, knit, crotchet and chat. And most often there is a scone or cake or two to round off this time.

As Italy is our Country of Study for 2015 we had a rather detectable Italian dessert demonstrated to us at our April CWA meeting. The Tortoni frozen cream dessert had a delightfully more-ish taste, and we can repeat Oliver Twist’s rather wistful words “Please, can we have some more?” Thank you, Susan for this wonderful repast.

By the time this has gone to print Anzac Day and many of the remembrance services will be over. Indeed our country has been blessed with the many sacrifi ces made on our behalf. Many will be too young to understand but for us it is a time of being thankful for those who served in our armed forces.

The CWA State Conference will be held in Tamworth from 3-7th May and there will be many items discussed, put forward, and issues resolved. The best of the State craft, Land Cookery entries, international dolls etc. will be judged and prizes awarded for the best of the best.

Historic Steam Train Planned for Berry Celtic Festival The Berry Celtic Festival always has lots of surprises, and this year the Lachlan Valley Railway’s 120 year old 3237 Steam Locomotive together with beautifully restored 1930’s FS compartment carriages, is being planned to bring Festival patrons from Sydney and Wollongong to Berry for the day. Along with the Grand Street Parade which offers a fantastic opportunity to get close to all of the bands with their bagpipes and drummers the Berry Celtic Festival to be held on Saturday 23 May is not to be missed.Commencing at 9.30am the grand street parade through the streets of Berry features all the distinctive colourful kilts and bagpipes playing along with the various Celtic Clans, Scottish Terrier dogs, vintage cars and hot rods.On arriving at the Berry Showground, comes the marching of the massed bands with the heavenly sound of the bagpipes reverberating around the grounds … you need to be there to feel the thrill of the occasion. Then a day full of entertainment commences with musical items, pipe bands, Celtic fi ddlers, highland dancing, enchanted singing, lots of Celtic merchandise stalls to view, plus the Highland Warriors. The Highland Warriors are always a crowd favourite as they compete against each other to determine the strongest man of the Festival. Along with lifting the amazing ‘Stones of Manhood’ they also attempt to toss the mighty caber. The Berry Celtic Festival is a fundraising project of the Rotary Club of Berry and is proud to have the support of many other community groups and service clubs including Zonta Berry, the Berry Showground Trust, Berry Chamber of Commerce and Shoalhaven City Council. Funds from this year’ s event go toward the activities of Shoalhaven CanAssist, as well as other approved Rotary projects. Entry to the Showground is $12.50 adults, with children under 15 years free. If you have any friends in Sydney or Wollongong who would like to take a step back in time and ride aboard the beautifully restored FS compartment carriages, built in the 1930s, being hauled by the LVR’s 120 year old

3237 Steam Locomotive to Berry, go to www.lvr.com.au for more information and tickets or Phone 6342 4999. The train will be picking up passengers from Sydney Terminal (Central) and Wollongong and arriving in Berry at 11.40am and returning later that day.

Travel and gardening! A happy mix that recently lured some B&DGC members south for the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show and then up to the Collectors’ Plant Fair at the Hawkesbury Racecourse. Now there is a club tour to the Blue Mountains in November to look forward to as well.

The MIFGS is the largest show of its type in the southern hemisphere. This year featured several important references to Gallipoli. The deep red Centenary of Gallipoli rose was launched by Treloar Roses, Australia’s leading rose supplier. Commissioned by the Anzac Day Commemoration Committee (Qld Inc.) and bred by German rose breeder W. Kordes & Co., it will be a standout in the April garden.A Phillip Johnson Landscapes design, “5,000 poppies” was also a poignant reminder of sacrifi ce. Bright red drifts of crocheted poppies spreading across the lawns of the display garden encouraged moments of refl ection. Part of a national project, they will complete a “fi eld” of 100,000 poppies in Melbourne’s Federation Square for Anzac Day. The project will then go on tour until 1918. Papaver rhoeas, Corn Poppy or Field Poppy, was not known as the Flanders Poppy until WW1.An Anzac display in the Berry Pharmacy window also featured crafted poppies. We have associated poppies closely with war remembrance days since WW1 but a likening of the hanging poppy bud to a dying soldier by the 9th century BC Greek poet, Homer, shows that the connection is an ancient one.It seems that our club members like to

travel overseas as well and there are plenty of garden tour companies and international conferences to tempt them. A little research, though, and a desire to visit the world’s best gardens is all that is needed for independent travel. Robin Brooks, our May Guest Speaker, was inspired to develop his garden on Woodhill Mountain after seeing the Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. Decades later, and with many overseas gardens under his belt, Robin will introduce us to the gardens

and stunning Display Houses of Pukekara Park in New Plymouth, one of the premier Botanical Gardens in New Zealand. If you would like to hear Robin’s talk, you are welcome to join us at 7.30pm on Tuesday,19 May in St Luke’s Church Hall in Princess Street. Sheldon brings with him a distinguished record of charity management, governance, advisory and regulatory roles as well as established skills in systems development and strategic planning. A calm and focused person, Sheldon brings creative energy to his work. He has a sense of fun and verve and is an accomplished change manager. He is courageous, and prepared to be different. Sheldon is the author of numerous publications on development themes and he holds a Masters Degree from York and Cambridge in the United Kingdom. TLMA welcomes Sheldon and looks forward to the passion and skills he will bring to the work of the Mission. As an auxiliary we look forward to hearing of the work and input we will have from the new CEO and the ways in which we can help those who suffer from leprosy around the world. A new research study by scientists at Colorado State University have found that this bacteria [Leprosy] can survive for months inside protective host amoebae that are common in water, soil and even within human eyes and noses. From there it can be transmitted to a human and trigger infection. This might explain why there are still many new casas of leprosy being found despite treatment being available. Scientists hope to come to understand the root causes of leprosy better so that it may be eradicated once and for all. What great news for the science lab. We will keep you informed, meanwhile we will keep on supporting the work of the mission and those affected with leprosy and disabilities.

This photo is 50 years old and was submitted by local resident John Smith who thought Berry Residents old and new would enjoy this scene on Prince Albert Street (near Sourdough).Left to right we see Dumper McDonald, Grant Elliott and John Smith; all originals of Berry Horse and Sulky, owned by the Elliott family of Tindals Lane. Back then, it would take 2 hours to get to the beach.

Above, we can see the Keo surfboards - John and Dumper’s prized possessions. Board racks were custom made by the late Bob White and Keith Smith.

Members of the Shed with local residents Angela and Rodney Briggs checking out the machinery on Seniors’ Day at the Shed. This year’s Open day during Seniors’ Week saw a good group of local residents visit the Shed to see what we do on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Angela and Rodney Briggs were among a group of residents that wanted to see the type of machinery we used and what we do with it. “I was amazed at the number of machines available to members” said Rodney during the visit.Next month the Shed is sponsoring two year 12 students from Shoalhaven High School to assist them in their transi tion from school to university. Scholarship winners were decided by the school and each student was required to acquire certain criteria to qualify. The students will visit the Shed next term to see what we do as part of the ongoing scholarship. It is hoped that we will be able to continue the scholarships next year. “People often ask us what do we do with the money we raise from the sale of the toys we make at the Shed, well we put the money into worthwhile projects like the scholarships” said Chairman Peter Johnstone.Once again a reminder that the 10th anniversary lunch will be held at Gabby’s on Thursday, 14th May. Invitations have been sent out and we are hopeful of having up to 80 people attend the lunch. We still have some special items for sale including a number of boxes made by one of our members Peter Lutz. These boxes can be used as jewelry boxes, pencil boxes or what ever you like. They are priced to sell so call into the Shed and see the Supervisor on duty.

SENIORS’ WEEK OPEN DAY A BIG SUCCESSOur Shed is able to undertake a variety of woodwork projects so if you have something you would like us to make, call in and discuss the project with us.We are currently replacing a number of fence panels at the David Berry Memorial Park on behalf of the Shoalhaven Council and we expect this project to be completed this month. Our next Health Talk will be held on Thursday, 23rd July with guest speaker Dr Ian Cole who is an ear, nose and throat specialist from St Vincent’s Private Hospital. We will provide more details closer to the time.

We are the owners of a holiday stay rental property on Berry Mountain and have been delighted with Berry Getaways and their contribution as our Property Manager over the past 10 years. Joy has a great way of managing stakeholders and once something is on her list “it gets done”. Equally importantly, Joy is proactive and regularly making suggestions for improvements, sometimes little things, perhaps new marketing initiatives or appropriate upgrades to support high occupancy. Calm in the odd crisis, Joy focuses on what needs to be done and we have always felt we are in capable hands. In short, she is a true professional!

Adrian and Lisa – Cherrywood, Berry Mountain

Dear Joy, Debbie and Caroline,

We just wanted to say a big thank you for all your hard work over the last three years managing our holiday house. You have far exceeded our expectations and we have really enjoyed working with you all. We are very happy with your professionalism in looking after our affairs, managing and relating to our guests. We look forward to continuing into the future.

Once again a big thank you for a job well done.

Doreen and Glenn McGregor – Berry Beach Holiday Cottage

Berry Getaways have managed our property for holiday lettings for the last 10 years and we cannot speak highly enough of them. They are professionals, pro-active and so pleasant to deal with.

VANUATU APPEALThanks to the generosity of the Berry community, Berry Branch of the Red Cross was able to send $6,709 to the Red Cross Appeal to help with the cyclone damage to Vanuatu. This was collected partly from street stalls in Berry, and on polling day at Berry Public School and from an extremely generous donation of $5,000 from the Berry Uniting Church.

ANZAC DAYApart from marching in the Anzac Parade, participating in the ceremony and helping the RSL Ladies Auxiliary with the catering, on the day before Anzac Day we sold Anzac biscuits and the money raised is to go to the Red Cross Young Parents Program. This program helps young people with children who have no family or other support with help they need in things such as raising the children, getting an education, getting a driver’s licence and getting jobs.

ZONE CONFERENCEThis year Berry Branch will be running our Red Cross Zone Conference. It is to be held on the 28th July at Bomaderry Bowling Club. The keynote speaker for the conference will be Robert Tickner who is CEO of Australian Red Cross. The conference is for members of all branches in the Zone get together to learn what each has been doing and plans to do in order to coordinate with each other and learn from each other. It is always a very interesting day and Robert Tickner is a very entertaining and informative speaker.

BECOMING A MEMBER OR VOLUNTEERINGIf you wish to fi nd out about becoming involved with or volunteering with the Red Cross contact the Berry Branch of the Red Cross (see Community Groups page of Town Crier for contact details), the Nowra Red Cross Offi ce (1800 621 433) in Graham St Nowra or go onto the Red Cross website.

The year the Berry Probus Club has commenced with the election of the Executive and Committee for 2015/16. The President is Lindsay McNamara, Secretary Hugh McCowatt and Treasurer Case Graaf. The Executive and Committee have met and have jointly been busy setting out a progamme for the 2015/16 year.

A very successful bar-becue has already been held and despite the day being very wet a good attendance by members resulted. The next major activity is a four night stay at The Juniors on Hawkesbury at lower Portland via Windsor. This outing is offering a wide range of social activities and members will on this occasion be travelling by car pooling. Other activities already organised are the 2015 Changeover Lunch which will be held in Berry at Gabbys on 30th April and this will be followed on 21st May with a lunch get together at the Leaf Restaurant, Berry.

The wellspring of any sporting endeavour is the young people who join the ranks as juniors. In Equestrian sport it takes a considerable level of commitment from families to enable the horse mad young child to learn to ride, to compete and continue developing their skills. Access to affordable riding lessons, clinics and competitions is an important consideration when parents are looking to fulfi l a child’s desire to ride. The “Ready Set Trot” program provides ponies and a structured program in which participants can learn about horsemanship as well as riding. Berry Riding Club is also committed to providing young people with opportunities to improve their riding skills and to compete at all levels.

During the school holidays the club held a Junior Camp at Woodhill Mountain where young riders spent all day every day learning about horses and riding. As well as the all-important fl at schooling they had the opportunity to learn about jumping and cross country under the tutelage of experienced instructors such as Danielle Fredericks, Marlene Battedou, Ashley Adams and Penny Rose. The added bonus was that children attending got to spend time in healthy outdoor activity with like-minded peers. New friends were made and new skills gained with the added bonus of ponies being available for those who didn’t yet have their own horse.

It is likely that when Berry Riding Club is fi nally settled into our permanent new venue these camps will become a very regular feature and the adults can even have a turn.

This year though we will be like a small tribe of Gypsies with access to our former ground limited to an area too small to hold competitions. The Berry Bypass is ploughing ahead and much of our original riding area is now the domain of heavy machinery. We are fortunate that a local property owner has very kindly agreed to give us access to a large paddock which will be suitable for a temporary home once development approvals and basic infrastructure is settled. In the meantime GG’s and some clinics are continuing at the old ground and the club is looking at other local venues to hold our much anticipated competition days.

Plant Identifi cation in the Berry Area: Berry has become over recent years a very popular “tree change” destination. Many of the farming properties have had small acreage allotments subdivided off and these are now rural residences. Landcare is often being approached by new owners of these to assist in identifying the plants that are growing on their properties. These enquiries are often a cry of help as the enormity of the weed problem confronts them. Landcare has been carrying out Plant Identifi cation for several years. The reason given for requesting this service has been varied. Some of the owners have been interested in knowing what is growing on their property, both Native and Exotic. Some wish to rid themselves of the non-natives with the idea of returning the property back to its original pre settlement fl ora. This is sometimes in the hope that their maintenance workload will be reduced. Others have been bitten by the Landcare Bug and wish to create and interact with their properties and to gain knowledge of the local Flora.Landcare members carry out this service at the properties by identifying what they can of both native and weed species, explaining how they are spread, how and when they fl ower and fruit. They explain also the processes required to combat the invasive weeds and strategies are recommended. The Local Natives present are marked on a comprehensive list of native plants and. after the visit a document is prepared listing the plants in two groups Local Native and Weeds with Common and Latin names and with photographs of the majority of the natives. Anyone interested in this service please contact Harvey Blue 4464 1880 or Ian Parker, 4448 6359.

WHAT ZONTA DOESHere’s an overview of the Club’s regular activities, for anyone interested in joining an organisation contributing to community welfare.

We continually make breast cushions and drainage bags to give to every woman in the area undergoing breast surgery, and anyone is welcome to join us at our sewing days, or indeed make cushions at home – all hands appreciated. For further information, call Margot Claringbold on 4464 1441.We give fi nancial assistance to students at four high schools in our area where appropriate. Feedback tells us that these contributions can often make the difference between students staying on to senior school, or leaving to start work to help their families. We award an annual contribution to an Indigenous student in our area, as identifi ed by their school. We award a scholarship to a student attending Bomaderry TAFE to assist in their studies, and a scholarship to an outstanding young woman in business from the Shoalhaven area.We make fi nancial donations to Mercy Ships, the Shoalhaven Education Fund, White Ribbon Day, the Nowra Women’s Refuge and send used bras to women in Fiji – a much appreciated gesture, we are assured. We also make birthing kits for women giving birth in developing countries. All these contributions call for continual fund-raising and we are becoming very creative in our efforts to fi nd that elusive dollar to give to worthy causes. Our monthly dinner meetings can give further insight into Zonta’s philosophy and commitments and we welcome visitors to attend to learn more of this worthy organisation. And we have fun! And the Club has formed a choir and has performed at local nursing homes, David Berry Hospital, International Women’s Day celebrations, Zonta conferences and in the streets of Berry singing Christmas carols. We do have fun!!

SPECIAL THANKS ARE DUEA decision was recently made to change the venue for our monthly dinner meetings from Gabby’s Restaurant to the Berry Hotel, and the Club would like to express its’ heartfelt gratitude to Carolyn and Richard of Gabby’s for their generosity over the past few years by opening the restaurant once a month especially for Zonta’s meetings. Our meals were always delicious, and we appreciated having the privacy of the venue available each month. See below for venue change.

COFFEE MORNINGSOur next meeting will be held in the courtyard room

at Our Book Shop, Queen Street, Berry on Thursday, 21st May at 10am and all are welcome to join a friendly chat and learn

OPEN DAYFire & Rescue NSW Berry Station

MEDIA RELEASE Change your clock! Change your smoke alarm battery! Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) fi refi ghters from Berry Fire Station today urged local residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms at the end of Daylight Saving – it could save a life.Station Commander Rick Guinery said fi refi ghters were happy to participate in the national Change Your Clock! Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery! campaign, supported by Duracell. “Only working smoke alarms help save lives,” Deputy Captain Guinery said. “A fi re can take hold in just three minutes, fi lling your home with deadly smoke. A working smoke alarm gives you vital seconds to get out before you’re overcome. “A smoke alarm with a fl at battery is just as risky as not having a smoke alarm at all. That’s why you should change your smoke alarm battery when Daylight Saving ends on Sunday, 5 April.”FRNSW data reveals 13 per cent of the 3,900 home fi res in NSW last year occurred in properties with no working smoke alarms. Devastatingly, more than half (56 per cent) of fatal house fi res between 2000 and 2014 had no smoke alarms present. The majority of these deadly fi res also occurred between midnight and 6am – when people were asleep.FRNSW recommends householders install photoelectric, interconnected and hard-wired smoke alarms.“In addition to the legal minimum requirement of one smoke alarm per level, FRNSW recommends having smoke alarms installed in all bedrooms for maximum protection,”Smoke alarms are also mandatory for all caravans, campervans, and other moveable dwellings where people sleep – even if the vehicle is kept off the road.Deputy Captain Guinery said a working smoke alarm and a home escape plan could save you, your family, pets and possessions in a fi re. “If you don’t have smoke alarms, don’t gamble with your family’s life by waiting to install them – you should do it now,” he said.If you need help checking or replacing the battery in your smoke alarm, contact your local fi re station and ask about the Smoke Alarm and Battery Replacement (SABRE) program for seniors and people with disabilities.

We’re all mad at BerrySpinners and Weavers…but in a good way, and only for one morning.

We are hosting a

MAD HATTERS TEA PARTYas our Biggest Morning Tea fund raiser forthe Cancer Council on Thursday 28th May.

AND YOU’RE INVITED TO COME!

Last year, our Biggest Morning Tea raised the astounding $550 – for a small group that was amazing. This year we are trying to top that! We will have scrumptious morning tea treats and our Crazy Raffl e will be a lot of fun.

COME ALONG AND JOIN US FOR MORNING TEA. YOU WILL BE VERY WELCOME. TO GET INTO THE ‘MAD HAT’ MOOD YOU CAN WEAR A CRAZY HAT, OR A NICE ONE! (IF YOU LIKE) - 10AM-12NOON, IN THE HALL AT THE ALBANY STREET GATE OF THE BERRY SHOWGROUND

On a serious note – we all know someone who is affected by cancer. The Biggest Morning Tea is a way that everyone can do something positive to help fund research, prevention and support services. You just never know when you, or someone you know, may need this su pport.
