nobody who works at an animal shelter or humane society wants to kill the animals who are brought to them. humane workers only do it because they see no alternative. the no-kill movement began as an attempt to bring some relief, not only to the animals, but to the people trying to deal with this seemingly insoluble problem. Best friends, for example, grew out of a group of friends, back in the 1970s, who used to go to our small local humane society once a month to adopt as many as possible of the animals who would otherwise have to be killed.
Back then, we could never take home enough to bring an end to the monthly killings altogether. But it was better than doing nothing. We could certainly nurse lots of the animals back to health, give them some simple house training, and find new homes for them. the idea that we might somehow be in competition with those dear ladies at the humane society never remotely crossed anyone’s mind – ours or theirs. they were doing what they could to help the animals, and we were doing what we could to help them help the animals.
not every community has enjoyed a good relationship between no-kill shelters and humane societies. the plight of animals can be so overwhelming that sometimes the only relief is to take your sense of helplessness out on someone else. We can start by adopting homeless animals ourselves, making them part of our family, and taking good care of them. and we can set an example of living by the Golden rule in our own lives, treating others, both people and animals, as we ourselves would want to be treated. We’ll not only be helping to guarantee a good home for every dog or cat who is ever born. We’ll also be setting a cornerstone of love for the new millennium.

Neville Brody studied graphic design from 1977 to 1980 at the
London College of Printing. In the early 1980s Brody belonged to the
alternative music scene. As art director of Fetish Records, Neville Brody
experimented with a new graphic language informed by ideas from
the subculture.
Brody mixed typefaces or interspersed typeface with decorative
details such as geometric elements, symbols, and pictures. From 1981
to 1986 Neville Brody was art director of the magazine “The Face”,
for which he designed a distinctive typographical appearance that
inspired magazine designers and other designers worldwide.

Demented But Lovable Dog: Sebastopol, CA
patrick amiot’s happy dog sculpture is made of a variety of metal junk and equipment cast-offs. like many of the artist’s works, the pooch has one eye protruding more than the other; its nose is a black washtub.
Grave of Bobbie the Wonder Dog: Portland, OR
Bobbie was a collie that was lost by his own-ers while they were on vacation in indiana. unfortunately for Bobbie, they lived 2,500 miles away in silverton, oregon. somehow, during the winter of 1923-1924, he walked 2,500 miles to get home. But all that walking wore Bobbie out. he died just three years later. he was buried in a place of honor just inside the gates of the animal cemetery of the oregon humane society in portland.
Snoopy Labyrinth Santa Rosa, CA
the snoopy labyrinth is unique in several ways. this labyrinth, in the shape of snoopy’s head, has two distinct, but complementary, areas. Winding through snoopy’s nose, you will encounter a meander switch-back; when you find yourself in snoopy’s ear, you will have navigated a two-circuit, classical-style labyrinth. the entire journey in and out of the snoopy labyrinth is about 875 feet, or one-sixth-of-a-mile.

Animals Make Us Human: Creating the Best Life for Animals by Catherine Johnson
in her best-selling book, Grandin drew on her own experience with autism as well as her experience as an animal scientist to deliver extraordinary insights into how animals think, act, and feel. now she builds on those insights to show us how to give our animals the best and happiest life - on their terms, not ours. this is essential reading for anyone who’s ever owned, cared for, or simply cared about an animal.
Dog on It: A Chet and Bernie Mystery by Spencer Quinn
an exciting new mystery series debuts with this first Chet and Bernie novel. Chet the Jet is a dog who failed K-9 school (cats in the open country played a role in his demise), but now he is a dedicated pi and works with Bernie, owner of the little detective agency. the story is told entirely from Chet’s point of view, which will delight dog-loving mystery readers, but the book is also an excellent pi tale, dogs aside, as Chet and Bernie investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl whose developer dad may be up to no good. excellent and fully fleshed primary and secondary characters, a consistently doggy view of the world, and a sprightly pace make this a not-to-be-missed debut. essential for all mystery collections and for dog lovers everywhere.
