Kiwi and Penguin Habitats
Comparing similarities and differences – A statement by room
12.
Both the kiwi and some penguin species live in New Zealand for example the Hoiho or Yellow
Eyed Penguin.
However, the kiwi lives on solid dirt in it’s habitat whereas the penguin lives on ice or
sand.

The type of surroundings they live in are different too, like the kiwi who lives in the grass and native bush, but
the penguins need to live near the water.
Both the kiwi and the penguin need to live near their food sources. The kiwi lives in the bush because it can dig in the ground for insects like worms. Penguins eat
seafood like fresh squid, crustaceans and fish.

Kiwis and penguins both have predators but like food, they are different because of their different habitats.
Penguins predators mostly come from the sea, like sharks. On the other hand kiwis have predators like
stoats, ferrets, cats and dogs.

In the past, people have had a devastating effect on both habitats. We should learn from this, for example when people have caused bush fires it has destroyed
our native bushes. Farms and new housing also mean we need to cut down the habitat of kiwis. In the future these types of birds will have nowhere to live, nowhere
to hide from predators and nothing to eat. We must look after bird habitats.
We think the thinking behind our thinking is extended abstract because we thought of a
prediction about the future that made sense. Next time we could try some different types of
abstract thinking like generalising.
