NATURAL OAK & DOVE GREY

award winning and accredited - complete assurance
We attribute our success to our wonderful team of skilled professionals, people who have
practiced their craft for many years using high quality, locally sourced materials combined with
the latest machinery and proven cabinet making skills.
All of our design and manufacturing processes require human input, so people are involved every
step of the way, checking for quality and precision. Much of the finishing work is done by hand
too, which is rare – and we think very special – in today’s automated world.
What’s more, all of our furniture is made to order, which is not always the case in today’s
mass-produced world. This means that we always know who we’re making our furniture for.
You will also be reassured to know that we look after the environment too and all of our wood
comes from renewable sources. As a result of our support of the environment our company is
FSC® accredited.

The first step in the process of making your new 1891 kitchen is sourcing the raw materials. Once
the real wood, veneers and panel materials reach our factory, they’re brought indoors to settle
and acclimatise. All timber is moisture checked regularly during this initial stage to make sure it’s
absolutely ready to become a beautiful 1891 kitchen.
When the real wood has settled and our quality team is satisfied, then it’s good to go, and the
large wooden boards are cut into smaller strips, ready to be machined into the elements
contained in your new 1891 kitchen. Our team then profiles the strips and cuts the necessary
mortise and tenon joints depending on the range you’ve chosen. The stiles and rails of your new
doors are now starting to come together and we have the beginnings of your new 1891 kitchen.

the 1891 kitchen collection is available in 30 contemporary colourways and in two fashionably popular door designs
the collection
The 1891 Aspect and Matisse ranges use real wood veneers, which are thin slices of wood peeled from the trunk of a tree,
similar to how a pencil sharpener works but on a large scale.
The wood veneers are carefully selected by the vastly experienced Peter Kenny (who has been part of the Ellis team since
1972) to create a natural and complementary effect, taking account of the true beauty of real wood furniture where no two
pieces are ever identical – as unique as your own fingerprint in fact. Once the veneers are selected, they are then stitched
together by Tony Rodgers, another long standing and experienced member of our team who has been with Ellis for 26
years. Every panel then goes through a calibrated sanding process, to ensure each component is the correct size and is
100% smooth, before the veneers and timber-edged panels are bonded together - we now have your new 1891 kitchen
door or furniture panel in its raw state.
This is where your doors change into the colour you’ve chosen for your 1891 kitchen – so if it’s Padstow Blue or Glacier, or
both, this is where the creativity starts. All of our 1891 kitchen ranges are finished by hand. Whether painted or a natural
woodgrain style, our skilled team prepare the furniture with primer and/or undercoat and then paint or lacquer every piece
of furniture, all by hand, all in a controlled, dust-free environment, keeping your new 1891 furniture in pristine condition.
During this process we once again sand the furniture to ensure it’s absolutely the correct thickness and evenness.
Patrick Madigan is one of the most experienced furniture painters in our team, with 36 years service with Ellis, he knows a
thing or two about making real wood furniture.

So now your new 1891 kitchen is really starting to take shape and we’re ready to start fixing the
necessary hardware to the hundreds of components that will make your new 1891 kitchen
furniture. As all of our furniture is made to order and as we make every element of your 1891
kitchen furniture - which really sets us apart in today’s market - we only drill for the hinges and
handles you require, so you’ll never find an Ellis door with unwanted plugged holes that not only
compromise the beauty of the furniture but also compromise its strength.
The 1891 team ensure that all necessary components and hardware are skilfully and lovingly
prepared and ready for the final stage in our process which is assembly of your new 1891 kitchen.

A member of our assembly team Alan Wortley Stronger build process using double dowels and glue
An 1891 fact:
Only ever seen by our skilled team here in Huddersfield, we
use a ‘double dowel and glue’ system in all our furniture,
which we believe is the best method in the industry. We
know our customers want to be safe in the knowledge that
their new kitchen cabinets have been built to be trouble-free
throughout their life, even in the busiest modern family
home. We also use solid hardwood rails in all our furniture,
again this is ‘double doweled and glued’ and will remain
structurally sound throughout the cabinet’s life.

So we now have every part of your new 1891 kitchen prepared and ready for our skilled
assembly team.
We only supply rigid furniture, 100% of what we make leaves our factory rigid and fully built.
Once again our furniture assembly is a very hands-on activity, with the added benefit of a
modern furniture press to provide further added strength and integrity to your new cabinets.
Only once your new 1891 kitchen is fully assembled and all worktops and accessories are
complete, will we release your kitchen to our wrapping team, where each cabinet is protected
in hard-wearing cardboard end-caps and corrugated sleeves.

Choosing natural real wood products for your home will add charm and character to any interior
style – the uniqueness of the material, the texture of the woodgrain and the characteristics of
each piece adds real beauty and value.
The 1891 kitchen collection uses a variety of solid wood and veneer species (e.g. Oak, Walnut,
Ash), all of which demonstrate beautiful natural markings such as knots, flared grain, colour
contrast and grain variety. These characteristics give each piece of furniture an inherent beauty
and are the result of natural growth patterns through the seasons of the years. Over it’s long life,
your 1891 real wood furniture will also mature, which is a natural process influenced by your
everyday environment, such as sunlight, artificial light, ventilation and air quality. This natural
maturing builds further character into your furniture.
