DEFINITIONS & DISTINCTIONS

• Universal Design: Creating a space that can accommodate users of all ages and abilities.

• Visitable: Creating a space that can accommodate the needs of a visitor with mobility challenges.

• Aging in Place Design: Creating a space that can help offset the common conditions associated with aging and keep its occupants safe and productive in their own homes.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN

What you should know now• Obesity trends could require more design

customization.• Newer-model wheelchairs – built to accommodate

larger users and offer more features – may require wider doorways and turn radius allowances.

• Current design guidelines don’t factor in the needs of caregivers assisting the elderly or disabled.

• The Veterans Administration has grants available for combat-induced injury accommodations.

VISITABLE DESIGN

What you should know now• Returning soldiers with combat-related injuries will

require that more homes be adapted for visitability.• In cases of soldiers returning to relatives’ homes,

there could be VA grants available for remodeling.• Aging U.S. demographics could also impact

increasing need for visitability accommodations.• Recession-driven household consolidations could

increase need for visitability accommodations.

AGING-IN-PLACE DESIGN

What you should know now• Likeliest to be largest of the three trends,

based on population size and trends.• Peter Pan Syndrome dominates – avoid the

“A” word. • Most style-conscious: Resort spa vs. rehab

hospital room.• Broadest spectrum and least predictable

design considerations.

AGING-IN-PLACE DESIGN

What you should consider now• Current design trends – e.g., zoned kitchens,

spa baths – work well for AIP design.• Tech trends can benefit AIP projects.• Indoor air quality “green” trends lend

themselves well to AIP.• Water/energy-saving “green” trends also play

well for aging Woodstock generation and fixed-income retirees.
