GLOBAL WORK

Why global work?

6 | P a g e

Page 7: LOGO Kit- Feb 27... · Web viewAs more and more families count on the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) for top quality cancer care that they cannot find anywhere else in the region,

As part of its efforts in combating cancer in Jordan, regionally and internationally, the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) has become increasingly active in the global fight against cancer, working with the top international cancer organizations and participating in most major international conferences on the topics of non-communicable diseases in general and cancer in particular. Our global work helps us to:

Put the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) on the map as the leading, internationally-recognized center of excellence in Jordan and the region. KHCC is the only center in the developing world and just the sixth worldwide to be awarded the Joint Commission International Clinical Care Program Certificate for its Oncology Program.

Build partnerships with the top cancer hospitals and organizations worldwide. These partnerships directly and indirectly have a positive impact on our patients, enabling us to continue offering the top medical cancer care in the region and embracing our patients with the loving care they need.

Network for grants and donations through contacts made with regional and international agencies, corporations and organizations. Through its global work, KHCF is able to expand its network and lobby support which in turn leads to additional grants and donations to support our life-saving mission.

Be the voice of the developing world lobbying the global community for additional support as countries struggle under the double burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Harnessing this support results in a positive impact, not only on Jordan but on the region as a whole.

Act as a role model for the developing world, showing that when countries take responsibility and put the structure and systems in place, quality international care can be achieved. Thus, KHCF is a model of what is doable, even in the context of a resource-poor, a low or middle income country.

 All KHCF’s global work ultimately builds credibility for the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center as the regional center of excellence in cancer care, the medical hub in the region and a reference for neighboring countries and others in the developing world.

7- THE KING HUSSEIN CANCER CENTER

ABOUT KHCCThe King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) is one of the best comprehensive cancer centers in the Middle East which treats both adult and pediatric patients. KHCC is named after our late beloved King Hussein who fought cancer in the same manner as he lived his life; with great faith, courage and dignity.

KHCC treats over 3,500 new cancer patients each year, from Jordan and the region. It is equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and services, including 8 operating rooms and 170 beds. It houses 18 intensive care units, including 6 ICUs specialized for pediatric care. Highly-qualified oncologists and healthcare professionals (over 200 oncologists and consultants) and 617 nurses, trained specifically in oncology nursing, work tirelessly to ensure that patients receive the latest in comprehensive cancer care.

KHCC delivers comprehensive cancer care by treating patients as a “whole”, focusing on their physical, emotional and social well-being. In that regard, KHCC has established programs which focus on all stages of comprehensive cancer care: from prevention and early detection, through diagnosis and treatment, to palliative care. KHCC offers many services to ensure that patients are supported throughout their difficult treatment, including: survivor groups, a physical rehabilitation program, a nutrition clinic, a psycho-oncology clinic, and a pediatric pain management clinic among many others.

KHCC treats all cancers and performs approximately 100 bone marrow transplants a year. The KHCC BMT program is one of the largest and most successful programs in the Middle East, achieving cure rates compatible with international standards. It oversees both matched allogeneic and autologous transplants. The KHCC BMT program also performs transplants utilizing cord blood, making it the only program in Jordan, and one of only two in the region, which offers such highly-specialized transplants for both adult and pediatric patients. Non-cancer cases are also treated through the KHCC BMT program including thalassemia, aplastic anemia and other metabolic diseases.

8- JORDAN BREAST CANCER PROGRAM-JBCP

2- ABOUT THE The King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) have been tasked and entrusted with the leadership of the Jordan Breast Cancer Program (JBCP) by the Ministry of Health.

JBCP was established under the directive of the Minister of Health and is governed by a National Breast Cancer Steering Committee comprising most stakeholders in the healthcare sector including the Ministry of Health. An Executive Board led by KHCF and KHCC stems out of this national committee. The Board oversees the operations of JBCP, provides direction and ensures implentation of its action plans.

HRH Princess Dina Mired is the Honorary Chairperson of the Board. Dr. Asem Mansour is the Chairperson of the National Breast Cancer Committee and the Executive Board.

NATIONAL STEERING COMMITTEEThe National Steering Committee is comprised of many stakeholders in the healthcare sector including:

Ministry of Health King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center World Health Organization United Nations Relief and Works Agency Royal Medical Services King Abdullah Hospital Jordan University Hashemite University Syndicate of Private Hospitals

THE NATIONAL PROGRAMJBCP is a nation-wide initiative for the development and provision of comprehensive services for the early detection and screening of breast cancer for all women in Jordan within the 40-59 age group for the purpose of:

1. Reducing morbidity and mortality for breast cancer by early detection and screening

2. Shifting the current state of diagnosis of breast cancer from its late stages (III-IV) to diagnosing breast cancer at its earlier stages (0-II) where the disease is most curable, survival rates are highest and treatment costs are lowest.

22 | P a g e

Page 23: LOGO Kit- Feb 27... · Web viewAs more and more families count on the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) for top quality cancer care that they cannot find anywhere else in the region,

GOALS AND OBJECTIVESJBCP aims to ensure the provision of quality services for screening and to increase public awareness and education on the risk factors, signs and symptoms, in addition to the benefits of early detection and screening of breast cancer. JBCP has a multidimensional approach covering the provision of screening services, education of females, capacity building of health professionals and quality assurance.JBCP’s overall objectives are:

To improve availability and accessibility of screening services across Jordan, especially to those with low income and those residing in remote areas with little access to healthcare services;

To increase the knowledge of the public on the benefits of breast cancer prevention and to change the attitude and behavior of the target population to seek early detection services;

To establish national unified protocols and guidelines that cover all processes of a comprehensive early detectiion and screening program. These guidelines will include best practice and quality assurance guidelines on training, medical equipment, diagnosis and referral systems;

To improve healthcare personnel education and training and To evaluate the quality of the program by collecting data for

surveillance and epidemiological analysis to record and measure success of early detection.

BREAST CANCER IN JORDANBreast cancer is the most frequent cancer as well as the most common malignancy afflicting women in Jordan. According to the latest statistics from the Jordan National Cancer Registry, 926 females were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, accounting for around 37% of all female new cancer cases and around 20% of the total new cancer cases.  Breast cancer poses an important health issue in Jordan for the following reasons:

70% of breast cancer cases in the country are presented at advanced stages (III-IV) during which survival rates are low and disease is less curable, and only 30% of cases are diagnosed in early stages (0-II). Even though the incidence of breast cancer in Jordan is lower than incidence in Western countries, the mortality rate is very high due to the late presentation of the disease.

Jordanian women are afflicted with breast cancer at a much younger age (media age is 45-49) than women in Western countries (median age is 60-65). This usually coincides with the age at which Jordanian women are busy raising children, caring for their families and contributing to the growth and development of society.

Survival rates and the early detection of breast cancer are directly connected; yet unfortunately, public awareness in Jordan regarding this fact is minimal and inadequate.

Treatment of patients when breast cancer is at its earliest stages is generally less expensive and more successful than treatment during later stages of the disease.

Incidence rates are increasing at 3% per year and thus in a society where 50% of our population is under 18 years old, the issue of breast cancer awareness needs to be addressed now so that it doesn’t become uncontainable in the future when the population starts to age.

The new facilities will feature a cutting- edge Cell Therapy and Applied Genomics Floor, including the first public cord bank in Jordan, and state-of-the-art stem cell labs.
