Seva Bharathi has been working with young women since 1990. “Kishori Vikas Yojana” is an exclusive effort to stand by the Adolescent girls in their struggles and growing up was launched in January 2005. The Primary goal is Empowerment i.e.; improving the standards in education, health, skill development and cultural values. Seva Bharathi completed its 25 years in the social service. As part of its silver jubilee celebrations Seva Bharathi committed to empower more women through Kishori Vikas Yojana.

The “Kishori Vikas Center” is where the volunteer organizes the teenage girls daily for 2 hours at any of the local community center or nearby locality. The teenage girls, 11-18 years are trained in basic things like information and skills that enable them towards self reliance. This particular age group gets awareness to the world and they would go on to design their future. Hence it is the right age group to give vocational skills, information and Sanskaras.

It is the flame to better the society that makes up a kishori volunteer. Seva Bharathi provides a small and humble honorarium that helps them pay their college fee and trips to centers. The volunteer is basically a junior or degree college student and is trained to run these Kendras.

Thanks to these volunteers today there are 123 Kishori centers with an average attendance of 25 bettering the lives of the young women. This activity is spread in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medak and Nizamabad districts. The status of women in the slums and rural areas need a small but qualitative intervention. It is here that the qualitative intervention of the Kishori Vikas volunteer makes a lot of difference. slums need a small but qualitative intervention. It is here that the qualitative intervention of the Kishori Vikas volunteer makes a lot of difference.

If the female is empowered she not only betters her life but also betters her family and society. The quality of education, vocational skills, health & hygiene, self defense skills and moral education are basic parts of this program. The participants in the program are given counseling and a forum to discuss their problems.

Most of the stakeholders are poor, they study in Government or local schools and cannot afford private tuitions but have the desire and intelligence to grow and be a better person. They live in single rooms and cannot study at home without disturbance. The Kishori center in their locality is an ideal place for the girls as a free tuition center apart from the skill and counseling center. The dropouts are motivated to pursue their education and given proper guidance and tuition.

Lack of information / education is one factor while ignorance to health & hygiene is another that is weakening the women. Kishori centers provide health awareness and preventive medicine along with yoga,

Kishori Vikas Yojana is an effort to bring self reliance, health, education and awareness to the young and the old alike in the slums. The young college going girls are selected as volunteers and trained, to equip them with information as well as the motivation to be the catalyst for the change.

As part of this project 15 Kishori Vikas volunteers visited 5 areas in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Nalgonda and Warangal district for 15 days. They created a platform with their work at the ground level. They knocked every door of those bastis, interacted with every mother, father, child and this step of these young girls to serve them has touched their hearts. In these 15 days they played with children, they taught them rhymes, singing, new games and dances for both children and women and became members of their families by staying along with them in their homes.·

After getting in to Kishori centers grades of 70% girls improved and some of them coming top in their respective classes and schools.

ª Because of Health & Hygiene and Homemade medicine tips their health has been improved a lot and hence their attendance is also hiked.

ª The local community has owned the Kendras and they are providing the place and facilities for the program.

ª The young women and girls started becoming employed or self employed and financially independent.ª The Kishori Vikas volunteer is now the nucleus of women empowerment and also has become trusted.

Self defense techniques are most required for girls nowadays. Self defense skills like karate and martial are not only fighting skills, but boost up their mental strength, confidence and makes them to handle difficulties they face in their regular life. It also betters their health. Kishori Vikas center children are trained in karate or martial arts in special sessions.

The sessions are friendly talks that enable peer discussion along with the slokas, literature, bajans, patriotic songs, significance of Indian festivals, inspiring stories of great people, especially women that help them mould in to future leaders.

The Volunteers are trained in a 1 day training camp on every first Sunday as well as a 3 day personality development camps conducted during Dussehra and Sankranti holidays. Every year summer camp for volunteers as well as children is also conducted.

At least 3 festivals are celebrated in the community annually. Raksha Bandhan, Varalaxmi Pooja, Bharatmatha Pooja are some community festivals apart from republic day, Independence day and annual day celebrated by all centers in their locality.
