ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE 2010

Kirklees Council is pleased to announcethe return of Spirit, Dewsbury’s annual freeoutdoor show, on Friday 26 February from7.00pm.

Mechanical dragons as tall as double deckerbuses will rampage through the town centre, breathing fire and entertaining crowds beforetheir final encounter with the dragon slayer infront of the town hall.

This year’s show is performed by Spanishstreet theatre company, Sarruga, who havetaken their magical shows starring mythicalmechanical monsters all over the world.

Cllr David Sheard, Cabinet member forregeneration (North Kirklees) commented:“Last year 5,000 people came to Dewsbury towatch international acrobats, Grupo Puja, andI’m expecting this year’s event to be just aspopular. Sarruga’s dragons performed in Liver-

pool during celebrations for City of Culture, where they attracted thousands of spectators, soI’m looking forward to Dewsbury giving themequally as big a welcome.”

The 45-minute procession begins outside thetown hall, making its way towards the marketbefore returning to Market Place and Long-causeway for the finale of fire breathing dragonsbattling with St. George. However, there will besome changes to the event format this year dueto the major work which is underway at the townhall. As the roof will be exposed, the show willnot finish with the traditional firework finale.

It is recommended that young children arecarefully supervised during the show as thedragons and performers come very close to theaudience
