New women’s suffrage exhibition at Tolson MuseumNew for 2018, our exciting exhibition ‘Our Fight for the Voting Right!’ celebrates the women of the region who fought for and won the right to vote. This year marks 100 years since the passing of the Representation of the People Act, which finally gave women over 30 a right to vote in parliamentary elections.

Learn about the difficulties Victorian and Edwardian women faced, daring to challenge their traditional roles in society. Discover the stories of Florence Lockwood of Linthwaite, who designed and created the iconic ‘Votes for Women’ banner, which will have pride of place on display, and 16 year old mill girl Dora Thewlis who was arrested and imprisoned for marching on Westminster.

The exhibition is open from Saturday 28 April and is accessible via stairs only.
