Welcome to the

2010/11Kirklees Concert Season

This is the eighth year of the partnership between Kirklees Council and the Orchestra of Opera North, which continues to go from strength to strength.

Romantics and Revolutionaries is our theme this year, one that could hardly be moreappropriate in these turbulent times. There will be plenty of reminders during thecourse of the season of how times of momentous change can often be a spur to thecreation of great, visionary art: one need only think of Beethoven for proof of that. Bothromantic and revolutionary, he is at the heart of our orchestral season: and in planningthe year, we have drawn inspiration from his spirit.

As well as launching a complete cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies and his majorconcertos this year – a project that spans this season and next – we include works bysome of music’s greatest innovators: composers from Bach to Stravinsky who took risksand broke the mould.

Passionate performance of inspirational music characterises the Kirklees season, creating a special, very direct line of communication between players and audiences. This excitement for music is a philosophy we share with Classic FM, Britain’s mostsuccessful commercial radio station. So, in an exciting new departure for us all, theOrchestra of Opera North becomes Classic FM’s Orchestra in Yorkshire from 2010.

Our resident Orchestra thus joins the other Classic FM orchestras who are our regularguests in the season: the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Northern Sinfonia.Together with Classic FM, we have selected four concerts that we think make idealintroductions to the power and variety of great classical music. If you’ve never tried onebefore, these ‘Classic FM recommends’ concerts are the perfect place to start; if youcome already, how about bringing your friends?

Completing our showcase of the great northern orchestras, we are also pleased towelcome the superb musicians of the BBC Philharmonic to Kirklees and, for the firsttime in several years, the Hallé.

The organ and lunchtime chamber concerts continue to thrive, and there is a wealth ofwonderful music-making to be enjoyed in both series again this year. The popularDewsbury lunchtime series will open in style with Voces8, recognised as Britain’s mostexciting young vocal ensemble. The first of this season’s organ concerts also marks avery special occasion: Gordon Stewart’s 20th anniversary as Kirklees Borough Organist.Come along and join in the celebrations - you’ll be very welcome.

We do hope you’ll join us as often as possible in the year ahead for more world-classmusic-making on your doorstep.

Our complete survey of the Beethovensymphonies is launched with the mostfamous opening phrase in all music. From a terse, four-note tag – ‘Fateknocking at the door’ as the composerdescribed it – Beethoven develops amusical drama that culminates in anoverwhelming blaze of glory. Nothing likethis had been heard before, and itsinfluence can be clearly felt inTchaikovsky’s first and best-known pianoconcerto. At the helm is one of thiscountry’s most daring interpreters of thisrepertoire, Douglas Boyd.

High octane virtuosity is in prospect in aprogramme by three Russian composersall famed for the colour and brilliance oftheir orchestral writing. Northern Sinfonia A little night music

Sunday 23 January 20113pm Huddersfield (NOTE TIME)

Orchestra of Opera NorthThe Heroic Symphony

A delightful programme designed tocelebrate our return to Dewsbury TownHall following its renovation. Grieg’sHolberg Suite is an ideal prelude to two ofMozart’s most popular works. ArchRomantic though he was, Tchaikovsky wasa great admirer of Mozart’s music, and his‘Memory of Florence’ makes for a deliciousfinale to the evening. This is repertoire inwhich the virtuoso musicians of theNorthern Sinfonia excel, so an evening ofpure enjoyment is on the cards.

Sunday afternoon concerts inHuddersfield have proved hugelypopular and we’ve reserved this one fora very special occasion. The enormouslydistinguished Austrian maestro, DietfriedBernet, conducts a programme thatcombines heroic power with Viennesecharm. Beethoven dedicated his thirdsymphony to Napoleon Bonaparte, butwhen he learned that Napoleon haddeclared himself emperor, he scratchedout the original dedication and altered itto ‘the memory of a great man’ – farmore appropriate given this revolutionarymusic’s universal appeal.

‘A superb musician: not only does heplay with great taste and insight but hisconducting is impeccable…’. BBC MusicMagazine on Howard Shelley. In his grand C major concerto and thestormy C minor, we encounter Beethoventhe evolutionary – displaying an obviousdebt to Mozart’s great sequence ofmature piano concertos whilst creatingsomething distinctively his own.Beethoven’s fourth symphony may be alittle less well-known than the twocomposed on either side of it, but in itsown way it’s just as wondrous.

Brahms was widely regarded in the 19th century as the natural inheritor ofBeethoven’s legacy, so this is afascinating opportunity to compare andcontrast his only violin concerto withBeethoven’s, which opened the season.Mozart can be claimed as both Classicaland Romantic; his emotionally-chargedG minor symphony certainly leanstowards the Romantic. The BBCPhilharmonic’s Principal ConductorGianandrea Noseda is acclaimed for theelectricity of his performances, so we’redelighted to welcome him toHuddersfield for this concert.
