Several local moms called on the Kirkland City Council to protest
a Kirkland location where three marijuana retail license applicants have ap-plied to set up shop.
McCormick Green, Biloxi Green LLC and Mind’s Eye applied for marijuana retail licenses with the Washington State Liquor Control Board with hopes to run their business at 1818 Market Street, a house-turned-o ce space surrounded by condos, apartments and houses just east of Market Street.
Another marijuana retail license applicant, Green Bee, has applied for a Totem Lake location, 12700 NE 124th St., Ste. 1 in Kirkland.
But Kirstin Larson, a member of the West and East of Market Moms group, said the concern lies with the Market location.
“ is location is not ad-jacent to other commercial areas -- it is a single family residence surrounded by other residences,” Larson said in an email. “It is less than 1,050 feet from Juanita Beach Park, four blocks from the middle school, 200 yards away from the Overlake bus stop and on the walking path to Kirk-land Middle School (there is not an alternative path, and 19th Avenue does not have sidewalks).”
Larson acknowledges the commercial zone complies with current Liquor Con-trol Board laws -- licenses can only be issued for stores located 1,000 feet from elementary or second-ary schools, playgrounds, child care centers, public parks, public transit centers, libraries or any game arcade where minors are allowed. Tavour craft beer delivery service launches in KirklandBY RAECHEL DAWSON
Like many cra beer lovers, Tavour CEO Philip Vaughn stumbled upon the brew a er years of associat-ing beer with the poor qual-ity stu he drank in college.
“You sort of feel like someone’s been telling you about Santa Claus your
whole life and you found out there was no Santa Claus kind of thing,” said Vaughn, a Kirkland resident since 2007. “It’s kind of like someone told you this great beer was Bud Light and then you found out there’s all this di erent kind of beer. It unearths this whole new love for it.”
It was this passion for cra beer and the concept of connecting people to it that led Vaughn and co-founders Ra k Robeal of Redmond and Sethu Ka-lavakur of Seattle to launch the downtown Kirkland-based Tavour, a cra beer delivery service, just weeks ago.
So far, Vaughn said demand has been over-whelmingly positive among customers and breweries.
Customers simply reg-ister at their website and receive daily email o ers for cra beer from local breweries. If a customer wants the product, he or she replies to the email with
how many bottles, one of the owners processes the request and it is sent out on the next delivery date.
Customers receive deliveries of the beer at their doorstep on the 10th of every month. eir rst delivery was Tuesday.
“ e idea was started because when you go into the grocery store people typically nd the same things over and over again,” Vaughn said. “So, what
we’re trying to do is give people access to that unique and interesting beer.”
But Tavour also aims to connect people to the story behind the product -- which bars or stores sell the beer, how long it took the brewer to come up with the recipe and information about the ingredients.

Landlords react to marijuana store backlash from community
BY RAECHEL [email protected] er receiving sev-
eral “nasty” phone
calls from Kirkland
residents, the landlord of
1818 Market Street will no
longer lease the property,
which has garnered inter-
est from marijuana retail
license applicants in recent
weeks. e property is selling for
$769,000.
Listing agent for the
property Mansor Bagh-
shomali said the property
owner never signed a lease
agreement with any of the
marijuana retail license
applicants - McCormick
Green, Biloxi Green LLC,
Mind’s Eye and Maison
Botanique - but was simply
exploring options.“Everybody was coming
at us asking for the prop-
erty,” Baghshomali said,
who works with Skyline
Properties, Inc. e landlord went to the
city of Kirkland to let them
know of the change and
city o cials promptly took
a sign down that noti ed
the public of the marijuana
license applications. e property is within
zoning code and complies
with the Washington State
Liquor Control Board
imposed 1,000 feet bu er
between schools and other
public places where chil-
dren might be. But because
the commercially zoned
property is encompassed in
a heavily residential
neighborhood, many
in the community
oppose the location
because of the direct
route from Kirkland
Middle School. “I can say that
when we found out
from the Liquor Control Board,
the Council was surprised, a couple
of months ago, when that
Market site came out,”
said Mayor Joan McBride.
“When they gured out where these shops
would go, no one would have thought
the Market neighbor-
hood would be one
of those places.”Although none
of the businesses had secured a lease
for that location, business owners
added the address to
their application to
the Liquor Control Board
because it was where they
hoped to operate business.
Mikhail Carpenter, a
spokesman with the Liquor
Control Board, said ap-
plicants need only demon-
strate they have a right to
the property or that they’ve
had discussions with the
landlord to apply for a
marijuana retail license.
“Ideally, you’ve had these
discussions, you know
where you’re going to locate
… but you may not have
secured that location,”
