Tom Scanlan continues with his saga "WinXP|PXniWThrough the Looking Glass part 4" (starting on page 6)with a look into the Windows XP “Help System”.

In May, I gave a presentation of “A tour of Windows XP andsome of the programs that you can run on it” and quicklylearned (or is that discovered? ;-) that an hour and a half real-

ly isn’t enough time to devote to a “Tour of Windows XP” muchless cover (Adequately) the program components that you can runon it. Maybe I’ll try again some other time and really delve into itfurther (or maybe make it multiple shows?).. Naw, I think that Ihad better leave it to the ‘polished’ presenters (like Microsoft andNew Horizons) to be able to effectively host a presentation ofsomething this complex, detailed and involved. I did (however)get to cover some of the ‘tool’ programs that I like to use, and withthat in mind, here’s the contact information for those programsthat I’ll call “my essential(s)”:

Sonal Shah returns to Louisvillethis month. Last we saw her, abouta year ago, Sonal was demonstrat-ing Microsoft games for us. She’sback this year with some way cooltechnology ‘digital photography’!She’s planning on showing us howMicrosoft is supporting digitalshutterbugs with Windows XP,Microsoft Picture It! 2002, MSNPhotos, FrontPage 2002, and theMicrosoft TV Photo Viewer.

Most of us have seen and evenspent some time with Windows XPby now. BUT, most of us probablyhaven’t spent much time with thedigital imaging features of thisproduct. I surely haven’t, becauseI’ve been busy working to deployand network it with other operatingsystems around town. WithWindows XP, digital photographyis pretty easy because XP wasdesigned to support it from thebeginning. Windows XP has sever-al helpful features for viewing pho-tos, as well as printing, storing, andsharing them.

By default, photos are automati-cally stored in the My Pictures fold-er. Each time photos are transferredfrom a digital camera, Windows XPcreates a new subfolder, within theMy Pictures folder, to contain them.Windows XP will automaticallyname the subfolder, but that can bechanged, of course! Double-click

any file/image and you’ll get a larg-er version of the photo in theWindows Picture and Fax Viewerprogram. Check out the toolbar atthe bottom of the screen and you’llsee that among other things you canview your photos as a slide show atthis point. You can also print, save,rotate, and open editing softwarefrom this toolbar. We’ll also seehow to save your photos to a net-work location or publish themdirectly to a Web site from MyPictures. These are just a few thingsthat you might not have stumbledupon in XP and Sonal will be show-ing us many more.

There are four versions ofMicrosoft Picture It! 2002, dividedinto two levels of features with twofocusing on publishing and theother two on photo editing only.They range in price from $35 to$55. Sonal will help us determinewhich one is the best for each of oursituations. She’ll show us the edit-ing capabilities of these productsand talk about some of the built-infeatures that differentiateMicrosoft’s photo editing softwarefrom the competition.

If you’re a digital shutterbug andyou’ve not visited the websiteh t t p : / / p h o t o s . m s n . c o m ,you really should. Beyond merelybeing able to store photos to sharewith friends and family, you’ll finda wealth of information designed tohelp you take better pictures. You’llalso find special deals, contests,and timely tips. Under the Tips andTricks area, there are currently linksto “Ten Tips for Better TravelPhotos” and a “Summer PhotoGuide.” Take a quick tour of what’savailable at the site and see how

easy it is for you to share your pho-tos on-line at this website.

I have to admit it; the MicrosoftTV Photo Viewer has me intrigued.That’s becuause it’s a gadget! <woohoo!!!> As if we weren’t havingenough fun just talking about digi-tal photography, we’ll be able to seethis new toy, too. It is a pain to haveeveryone crowd around the com-puter monitor to look at the photosfrom the recently completed vaca-tion, isn’t it? Well, how about beingable to show them on the familyroom TV? That’s the idea with thisproduct. It’ll save up to 40 photoson a 3.5’ diskette and let you showthem on a regular TV. It’s priced at$80, but it does include MicrosoftPicture It! Express 2001 for somebasic editing. Here’s another idea:you can haul it along when visitingrelatives who don’t have a comput-er such as Grandparents in a retire-ment living facility. Just don’tshow it in the community room oryou’ll be adopted by a gazillionGrandparents! <grin>

Microsoft has worked hard tomake Windows and Windows pro-grams easier to use and learn. Theyhave added many features, func-tions, and set standards aimed atmaking Windows more user friend-ly. I have to applaud their effortsand say they have been mostlysucessful. However ...

A few of these design features canresult in frustration, extra work, oreven data loss. I call these featuresGotchas. While most of them areactually part of the Windows oper-ating system, many only come intoplay inside programs that run onWindows. Let’s look at a few that Ihave learned about the hard way.

Poof Goes the Text

Probably the most common fea-ture for a new user is TypingReplaces Highlighted Text. Thiscomes into play almost any placewhere you can enter text, in yourword procesor, spreadsheet, orsomething as simple as a dialogbox. The way this feature works isthat when a text entry is selected orhighlighted, the next key you typewill replace the entire selection.

I find this feature to be quitehandy. It can save time and effort ifyou expect it to happen. The prob-lem comes into play where you mayhave just completed some action ona section of text and it remainshighlighted. If you then hit a key,poof, there goes your work. It canbe quite confusing and disconcert-ing if you didn’t expect it to hap-

pen. Of course the Undo functioncan bring things back the way theywere.

But I just saved it!

Next is the Save vs. Save As deci-sion. How many of you routinelyopen a document, to make changeswith the intention of saving thechanged version to another filename when you finish? Now howmany of you then get going too fast,and click Save instead of Save As?

Most programs will obliginglysave the edited version right overthe origional without warning orcomment. Poof, there goes the ori-gional. The work around here is toalways work on a copy of the ori-gional, and always select Save As.This gives you a chance to changeyour mind.

Most of us have gotten quite usedto the Recycle Bin in Windows95/98. This is a great feature andhas saved my bacon more than oncewhen I inadvertently deleted some-thing.

So where is the Gotcha? Filesdeleted from a removable disk orfrom a network drive are not pro-tected by the recycle bin. Any timeWindosws asks, “Are you sure,” itis best to pause, read the dialog, andmake doubly-sure of what you aredoing. The work around here iskeeping recent backups of all yourimportant stuff.

Windows Forgets

Many of us have our ISP accountname and password saved in DialUp Networking so we don’t need to

type it in each time we connect, anice feature. But here’s the Gotcha--if you attempt to connect to yourISP and for any reason are unsuc-cessful, Windows Dial UpNetworking can forget your savedaccount name and password. Thiscan be a real problem if you don’tremember the information, or ifyou don’t have it written downsomewhere.

How about when you areinstalling a program and Windowsnotifies you that the install programwants to copy an older file over anewer version. What to do?

The Gotcha is if you say No. Ifyou let the install program copy theolder file over a newer one, one ormore of the already installed appli-cations may no longer work. It isalmost always best to keep thenewer file. Usually, the newer ver-sion will work just fine with yourolder program.

Remove or Remove All, Thatis the Question

Have you ever had an uninstallroutine tell you that it was about toremove files it no longer needs, butthat they may be shared by otherprograms and asked you to confirmwheather to remove them? Pay par-ticular attention to this dialog. It istempting to just click on theRemove All button so you can geton with business. However, theGotcha is that if you click RemoveAll, you don’t get the chance toreview the location of these files. Itis very difficult to be sure that noother program really needs the filesor not. Unless the disk space isabsolutely necessary, it is almostalways best to just keep these typesof files.

I am sure as you read this, manymore “Gotchas” came to mind. Ifthey did, please send them to me.I’ll compile them for a future arti-cle.

It seems like Microsoft WindowsXP is everywhere. Dealers adver-tise it, computer-geek TV showsdiscuss it, developers claim com-patibility with it. Users comment onit, including us! Does all this atten-tion translate into anything useful?

In earlier installments of our con-tinuing Windows XP review, welooked at Windows ProductActivation, some installation con-siderations and gave an overview ofWinXP. But in many respects, thesetopics are peripheral to the primaryconcerns of most users. What fac-tors should be most significant indeciding whether WinXP is foryou?

Our real concern should be whatan operating system (OS) does toenhance the average user’s produc-tivity. Ideally, we shouldn’t care oreven know what OS we use. Its solepurpose is to act as a platform forthe applications we run, enabling usto produce useful benefits with theminimum effort and cost. The bestOS is one that transparently lever-ages our experience, maximizesproductive time and minimizeshardware requirements or peculiari-ties. In other words – ask what willWinXP do for you, rather than whatyou have to do to make WinXPwork smoothly.

Ask yourself: Have you neededhelp troubleshooting your comput-er’s operation? How often have youspent wasted minutes or even hourstrying to perform what should be asimple task but bogged down find-ing the proper sequence of steps orsyntax required by the OS? Have

you ever had to call on expert assis-tance to install a common device orprogram? Or have you had to buyextra documentation and utilitiesjust to insure that the “platform”you use will remain stable andsecure in normal use? These thingsare not the way it should be.

I know of no operating systemthat approaches the ideal butWinXP is a step closer than anyother Windows version. The self-contained help system is far moreflexible and complete than earlierversions. The utilities and automat-ic maintenance options worksmoothly, often in the background.In some cases, Microsoft licensedutilities from other companies toprovide all the essentials. The ker-nel manages memory and resourcesmore efficiently, and XP is muchmore stable than Win 98.

In earlier versions of Windows,most users found the help pagesconfusing and useless. Material waseither too vague, or written forexperts or a topic was simply notcovered. Finding informationmeant you had to be familiar withWindows or spend time browsingfor the right wording and topic.Most folks stopped using WindowsHelp, in spite of experts’ advice to“always hit F1 for help before call-ing me!” Users bought and depend-ed on printed references, creating ahuge industry of help manuals writ-ten by folks other than Microsoft.

Recognizing the problem,Microsoft’s goal was to make theHelp Center more useful in WinXP.After all, who should understand itbetter than the software designers.Rather than creating help files as an

after thought, a team documentedWindows as it was built. Testing thehelp system was as important aswriting the code, and the new helpfiles are much larger and morecomplete. Improved presentationand access were also goals.

The new WinXP Help Center is akey element in making WinXPquicker and easier to use. It uses anHTML-like web page format and aweb browser window to access helptopics and link to other utilities.This common interface is quicklyunderstood by any user who hasdone much web browsing. Buttonsfor moving backwards and for-wards, returning to the Home helppage, Index or looking at the helpHistory are quickly familiar andunderstood. Better navigationmakes it easy to find what you need(see Fig 1).

The text of the help can be in amore readable format by emphasiz-ing it with color or font changes. Ifneeded, diagrams and pictures canbe included. Using the powerfulformatting and display capabilitiesoffered by web pages means thathelp text can also hot link to otherplaces and programs seamlessly.An incredibly powerful aspect ofthis lets you link directly to theonline Microsoft Support pagesfrom within the Help Center onyour computer.

If you have an active internet con-nection while the Help Center isopen, it downloads links directlyfrom a Microsoft server. Theselinks show up under the “Did youknow?...” heading on the HelpCenter page. These links can beupdated and changed daily pointing

to hot topics Microsoft suggestsusers check on to remain current.For example, my Help Centeroffered links to WebCasts spon-sored by Microsoft on advancedfeatures. It also linked to the “com-patibility list” of hardware and soft-ware maintained on the Microsoftservers.

An even more powerful aspect ofthis technology is found when usingthe SEARCH bar in the HelpCenter. When doing a keywordsearch, the system presents resultsin three groups: Topics, Full TextMatches and Microsoft KnowledgeBase. The search engine examinesthe help files on your machine, butalso queries the online Microsoftsupport center for links to technicalarticles on your topic. That givesyou access to the latest material,updated daily by Microsoft techni-cians, addressing questions askedby users contacting Microsoft TechSupport. The MSKnowledge Base

is considered the penultimate refer-ence source. Is that cool?

The home page of the Help Centerlists links to common tasks underthe “Pick a Help Topic” category.These links then open well orga-nized and indexed lists and sub-top-ics. Individual items may lead to ananimated tour, or a self-paced les-son or a more traditional help docu-ment. Because these pages arelinked HTML, they can be updated,expanded and can be linked to frommore than one pathway. In this waythe system can grow as Microsoftincorporates new material.

As you explore help topics, thebrowser HISTORY list is updated,allowing you to retrace your steps ifyou need to return to a help topicdays or weeks later. Most topicpages will also contain toolbar but-tons to “Add to Favorites..”, allow-ing you to bookmark pages. Youmay also print out a page or click a

“Locate in Contents” button, lettingyou zoom to a higher level in relat-ed pages. These navigation optionsmake this help system incrediblyflexible and a rich source of infor-mation for experts and amateursalike.

The Help Center does more thandocument the system though.Under the “Pick a Task” heading,you can also select and run systemutilities needed to keep things run-ning smoothly or diagnose a prob-lem. You’ll find links to “hidden”system logs documenting usage,access and problems that expertsuse, but most users did not knowexisted. There are also “wizards,”designed to step you through com-mon tasks, like setting up a net-work. This makes the Help Center agateway to becoming more profi-cient and can simplify computermanagement.

Even if you exhaust the internalhelp system, there are links to out-side help. You can seek help direct-ly from Microsoft online or get alist of phone numbers. You can setup a Remote Assistance session oraccess a newsgroup.

This last option will take you tofree Microsoft supported user-to-user newsgroups, where there is aconstant dialog between users on allaspects of Windows. While usingnewsgroups takes some time andeffort, they also connect you withinteractive, person-to-person help.In a news group, questions are post-ed in topical groups and read byeveryone in an open discussion for-mat. Servers around the world“mirror” these discussions, andpeople can reply if they have infor-

mation to contribute. Searching anewsgroup for discussions relatedto your question can lead you topreviously posted solutions, or getthe attention of volunteer MVPexperts.

If you choose to get RemoteAssistance across a network or theinternet, you can let a computertech or expert link to your machineand “drive it,” while you watch.There are limits to what RemoteAssistance can do, but if you have ahelp desk or an expert with WinXPPro available, it can be a great tool.If you’ve seen products likePcAnywhere, remote access will befamiliar. It’s something like havingan expert make a house call via theinternet.

In summary, the WinXP HelpCenter offers almost every possibleway to learn about and use theoperating system tools and fea-tures, using the most common pos-sible interface. While I am familiarwith computers, I have found theWinXP Help Center the best nativesystem documentation of ANYoperating system I have used.Finally! It makes using and recom-mending XP a “no brainer.”

Once again, I’ve run out of room.I wanted to tell you about WindowsExplorer extensions which allow itto display common file types andinformation. Explorer now sup-ports zip files, displays more fileproperties information, can displaythumbnail images, and has CD sup-port. I wanted to tell you about howthe START Menu tracks recentlyused files and programs. The startmenu takes you quickly to thethings you’ve worked on lately.

This makes the OS more function-al. Application Pre-fetch automati-cally loads programs faster, makingmore efficient use of resources. Allthese things make WinXP behavemore like my idea of an ideal OS.

Perhaps we can look at thesethings, plus system utilities andsecurity issues in a future article.

Do you want to read the goodnews first or the bad news first? Mypreference has always been the badnews first. I will list the good newsfirst but leave the choice up to you.Go to the paragraph that you preferto read first.

GOOD NEWS: QuicKeys version2.0 is an excellent application forindividuals who want to turn ontheir computer and have the appli-cations and files that are used on adaily basis up and ready for a day’swork. Through a variety of stepsyour system can be set up to auto-matically run what QuicKeys callsActions and Sequences. Through aclick of an icon or a stroke of a key,you can logon to a server, acquire e-mail, open various applications, etc.The application is nicely laid out in

an orderly manner. The QuicKeysEditor, which is from where themajority of the work with thisapplication will take place, utilizesthe typical menu bar, toolbar andtab controls for its user interface.QuicKeys also adds its own Toolbarto your Desktop.

This Toolbar does have an Autohide. This makes the navigationthrough the application intuitive.The Setup Wizards Tab is loadedwith over twenty command buttonwizards that will walk you throughsetting up various Actions (aQuicKeys Term) and Sequences (aQuicKeys Term). Once accustomedto the application, or at anytimedesired, you may set up Actionsand Sequences without a wizard orwizards. If after establishing theActions and/or Sequences youdesired but do not get the desiredresults, QuicKeys provides adebugging user interface. In theshort period of working withQuicKeys, I have had no real diffi-culties. There has not been a needto utilize the applications debugger,and the application has not crashedmy system. From my experience Iwould say that QuicKeys is a qual-ity product. If you have career aspi-rations (or your personal use of acomputer does not go beyond gam-ing or various applications) thatdeveloping PC skills, as a mini-mum, will not enhance the resumeand you want to expedite computertasks, then QuicKeys is an excellentchoice. But, if PC skills do enhanceyour resume then QuicKeys is apoor choice.

BAD NEWS: The bad news is notbased on the quality of this product.The bad news in this software eval-

uation is based on the fact thatMicrosoft controls the majority ofthe market in business applicationsvia MS Office Suite. It is also basedon the fact that Microsoft is work-ing to develop extensible products.The extensibility of Microsoft’sproducts will be clearly displayedwhen there is a complete release ofthe Microsoft.NET.

The ability to do what QuicKeysoffers is already available in the MSOffice Suite. Why buy anotherapplication that uses up systemresources, and adds another layerbetween the user and the applica-tion when the ability to do the samedesired tasks is available via VBA.In this reviewer’s opinion,QuicKeys is only a sophisticationof recording macros and VisualBasic for Applications (VBA). TheQuicKeys manual is reasonablyshort, approximately 179 half page(8.5 x 7 x .375), but if the time usedto study it were used to study VBAinstead it would have been timebetter spent. If you use MS OfficeSuite on a regular basis, studyingthat which improves the ability toutilize the Office Suite just makessense. Also these skills are transfer-able to other career positions. Whatis learned about QuicKeys, if youmove on to another position, stayswith QuicKeys (except possibly theconceptual knowledge).

Years ago, whern I decided it wastime for a new PC, I built my own.In those days it was possible to savehunderds of dollars with a “homebrew.”

When you successfully booted upfor the very first time, “The Thrillof Victory” took on a meaning allits own. Things changed, timepassed and one day it no longermade economic sense to build yourown machine. Except for dedicatedhobbyists, no one builds their ownautomobile anymore and the PCwent down that same congestedhighway.

You’re most likely not going tobuild a PC from scratch, but maybeyou will buy that brand new digitaldoodad. All the PC magazines havepublished rave reviews about it andall your friends are wondering how

they ever managed to survive with-out it. You’re all ready to rip thepackaging to shreds and install it.

Stop! Cease! Desist! Halt! Beforeyou do anything else, rein in yourenthusiasm and do some ground-work. You want your installationsmooth and as trouble free as possi-ble. Surgeons carefully preparebefore surgery and you need to pre-pare for your upgrade. Follow thesesimple rules before rushing inwhere angels fear to tread, and yourchances of attaining PC Nirvanawill improve dramatically.

1) Always allow yourself plentyof time. If you think the job willtake two hours, schedule four hoursto allow for unanticipated road-blocks. Even the simplest installa-tions can run into problems.Sometimes a straightforwardexpansion card installation canbecome enormously complicatedby a stripped screw. Not only doyou have to take Murphy’s Law intoaccount, but keep in mind thatMurphy was an optimist.

2) Back up your system beforemaking any changes. I don’t carehow simple you think the job is.Too many tears have been shed bynot doing a complete system back-up first. Power failures can ocur atany time. Don’t rule out a meteorstrike.

3) Make sure pets and children arekept away from the open PC.Toddlers are insatiably curiousabout everything. You don’t want apet or a child cut by an exposedcomponent with sharp edges.

4) Make sure computer andperipherals are ALL unplugged,

and never touch any exposed com-ponents in your PC without “dis-charging.” Discharging happenswhen you touch something metallicto remove static electricity. Oneaccidental jolt of static electricityhas been known to fry mother-boards and reduce grown men toquivering blobs of jelly. Small dogsand children sometimes don’t dowell when jolted by static electrici-ty. Neither might you.

5) Turn your PC off and leave itoff for several hours before open-ing. Internal components can getvery hot. Allow sufficient coolingoff time before starting any projectthat requires removing the coversfrom your machine.

6) Have the right tools handy.Many PC manufacturers have made

the upgrade process simpler than itused to be. If all you’re doing isinstalling a board in a PCI slot, youmay not need anything more exoticthan a screwdriver. A new mother-board installation could be morecomplicated. At a bare minimumyou need a Phillips screwdriver anda pair of needle-nosed pliers.

7) Follow all the installationinstructions to the letter, since even“insignificant” steps that may seemunimportant can turn out to beessential. The manufacturer went tothe trouble and expense of printingthe instructions for a reason. Ignorethe printed instructions at yourperil.

8) Don’t dither about consultingan expert if you get stuck. World-class physicians don’t hesitate toask for a second opinion. Whyshould you be any different?

9) Make a startup diskette. It takesonly a few minutes and can saveyour butt.

Avoiding Common Problems andwhat to do when they happenanyway

After you have installed your newcomponent, place the cover back onyour PC and reconnect everything.Turn on the PC and make sure itboots. If your system crashes beforeWindows even begins, STOP! Turnoff the PC and unplug it. Take thecovers back off and check for loosewires and components that may notbe properly seated in their sockets.If this doesn’t remedy things, it’stime to bring in a professional.Unless you know exactly whatyou’re doing, you can cause a great

deal of damage beyond this point.

If the component is a Plug’N Playdevice, Windows should recognizeit during the boot process and installdrivers automatically. If you need toinstall software, follow the manu-facturer’s instructions.

If Windows snubs your new hard-ware, go to the Control Panel andselect the Install New Hardwareicon and follow the instructions. IfWindows continues to ignore thedevice, go to the manufacturer’sWeb page and see if there are anyupdated drivers on the site. If thereis no restriction against any non-profit group using the FAQ section,explore it. You may find some goodinformation or troubleshooting tips.

You can also go to the ControlPanel, select the System icon, andthen select the Device Manager tab.Your new component should be list-ed under the appropriate deviceheading. If you see an exclaimationpoint, then you have a problem. Ifthat’s the case, press the [+] symbolto open the device’s “directory.”Now, right-click the device andselect Properties. You’ll find aseries of tabs and choices depend-ing upon the product type. Gothrough the tabs and see if any errormessages appear. You might be ableto fix the problem at this juncture. Ifnot, make a note of the specificerrors and look in the manual orcontact the manufacturer forinstructions.

Summary

Have a plan before you upgrade. Ata minimum, back up your data, andinstall current drivers for your hard-

ware. The more thoroughly youprepare, the less likely trouble willensue.

HEADLINE NEWSBig changes this month, we have

a New SIG, the WINDOWXP/2000 SIG, well actually the for-mer WINDOWS 2000 SIGLEADER, Keith Stenger will nowbe covering WINDOWS XP. Keithwill show you how to setup WIN-DOWS XP and make it your own.

On the horizon, the one we allloved, return of the INTERNETUSERS SIG. It is just a short matterof time and finding a SIG LEADERthat is willing to organize a mixtureof Guest Presenters and providesome content, leadership and orga-nizational skills to get this onegoing.

The COMMUNITY OUTREACHSIG meets on select third Tuesdaysabout five times a year from 6:30 to8:30 PM at the Wayside ChristianMission's Education Center. SIGLEADER, Jason Bagley has usedcomputers that need repairs beforebeing given to Wayside ChristianMission clients. We spend theevening troubleshooting these PCsand replacing parts, installingreplacement hard drives, configur-ing and formatting them, installingRAM, troubleshooting BIOS whenneeded and installing OSs and othersoftware. Our next meeting will beon July 16, 2002 and Jason willhave more computers to be checkedout to get them ready to return toproductivity.

HARDWARE SIG

The May 6, 2002, HARDWARESIG Meeting was held at our regu-lar meeting location, the LFPLEline Branch at 6:30 PM. SIGLEADER Grant McCormick was illand not in attendance and CharleyMay used the opportunity to install

a hard drive and add an ATA 133card into a member’s computer. Nothaving seen the computer beforethe meeting proved to be a problem,as the Compaq computer did notlike the upgrade card and was nottoo fond of the Maxtor ATA13340GB hard drive. We were unableto utilize the speed of the ATA133card, ran out of time and suggestedthat the member check on the com-patibility of the add-in card. Verdictis in, card not compatible, solvedwith an upgrade computer (newmotherboard, faster CPU, new caseand power supply) with other com-ponents transferred to the new case.Well, as it turns out, a good solutionto a bad problem.

On June 3, 2002, we will continuethe backing up your computerseries with two more ways to pro-tect your computer's data. First onthe program will be using NortonGhost to clone a hard drive over anetwork --- combining networking,backup, and disaster recovery! Thesecond part of the program willshow how to image the hard driveto another hard drive or an externaldrive.

In July, we will cover basic net-work cables and connections foryour home network, with actualhands on assembly.

August will continue with how toinstall the network cables and con-nections in your house.

If you have a program that uses aCD-ROM Burner as a back upmethod, please come and bring anyinfo that you might have on the pro-gram to share with the group (howit works, how long it takes, is it

easy to use and are you happy withit).

SIGLEADER Brian Schenkenfelderadded to the program and led theSIG through the process of devel-oping the future meeting agenda.An excellent meeting, which leftattendees ready to charge aheadinto learning more about Linux.TEAM MEMBER MikeDoerhoefer, technical meetingnotes taker, did an outstanding jobof catching all the details and pro-viding a copy to SIG MEMBERSfor their note files. TEAM MEM-BER Ken Dawson is still recoupingfrom his illness and was unable toattend, GET BETTER SOONKEN!

At our June 19, 2002, meeting wewill cover User Management withFiles, also the Boot process andsome "Fun with" commands. Nowwould be a good time to come joinus, while we are looking at thebasics of Linux. Our attendance isup and we are in the process ofbuilding a good foundation forbeginning Linux users.

Over the next six meetings wewill cover the following subjects;Building a kernel, Security - net-work and network configuration,Setup firewall, Samba, Apache andpostfix (sends mail). The LAB meetings are a lot offun, are well attended and usuallyseveral computers are successfullyloaded. Many of us go to lunch (adaytime PIG SIG) at W. W. Cousinsafter the meeting.

The LINUX LAB SIG is lookingfor members interested in findingout how to install, setup and operatethe Linux Operating System ontheir machines or other attendee'scomputers. So drag that old usedcomputer out of the closet, bring itto the LINUX LAB SIG and let ushelp you get it leaping with Linux.Each month we will work on settingup members' computers, updating,configuring and installing opensource software on them.

NEW USERS SIG

At the May 13, 2002, meeting atthe New Horizons ComputerLearning Center, we finished ourcoverage of Microsoft's wordprocessor, MS Word. We looked atways to customize Microsoft's topof the line word processor, with thetips and tricks that make everydayusage of Word easier, faster andmore enjoyable! Some of the topicscovered were setting up a table inyour document and importing agraphic.

SIG LEADER Charley May leadattendees on the big screen, goinggradually through the trainingexample, as attendees followed ontheir NHCLC computer and pro-duced their document under thecareful guidance of the NEWUSERS SIG TEAM MEMBERS.After the meeting, many attendeesretired to T.G.I. Friday's for foodand good conversation at our PIGSIG.

On we plan to start another roundof the "new user series" starting onJune 10, 2002. If you are a newcomputer user or just want toreview, please consider coming tothe NEW USERS SIG. We don't gotoo fast, Charley leads attendeesthrough each step of each feature

On May 2, 2002, Martin contin-ued to share his explorations ofVB.NET with a demonstration ofsome of its peculiarities andpromises. The evening ended withsomething not working and Martinpromising to find out why by thenext meeting (June 6). Martin hasbeen in touch with Microsoft andthe problem has been solved.

At the June meeting, Martin willcontinue looking at VB.NET, bypresenting a complete applicationwith data access and report print-ing.

A look ahead at the calendarreveals that the first Thursday ofJuly is July 4, not a good day for ameeting. Besides, the library will beclosed. Therefore, the next meetingafter June 6 will be August 1, prob-ably with more stuff on .NET.

At the May 16, 2002, meeting, wehad a presentation on a programcalled Text Pad. This has advan-tages over Notepad in editingHTML. Our original program onDigital Cameras was delayed by theillness of the presenter.

Since we tried, unsuccessfully, toinsert JavaScript into the FrontPagegenerated HTML to provide dropdown menus (we finally insertedintermediate pages). We will behaving a presentation on JavaScriptat our June 20 meeting. GuestPresenter, Joan Combs Durso, theYOUTH SIG leader, will be doingthe presentation.

At the July 18, 2002, meeting, wewill reschedule a presentation onDigital Cameras by Brian Rogers ofOmni Imaging and PhotographicSupply.

We will look at photo editing (fora web page) at our August 15 meet-ing. We will determine which edit-ing program after hearing theupcoming Microsoft presentationand comparing their program toother existing photo editing pro-grams.

Rather than continue work on theKIPCUG web page, during futuremeetings, we will assign tasks tomembers to be reviewed at the next

meeting. We will be updating thispage until we feel that it is ready toreceive Board Approval. Then itwill be turned over to the KIPCUGWebmaster.

In addition, we will be helpingother KIPCUG SIGs by setting up aseparate page for each of theKIPCUG Special Interest Groups,as needed.

YOUTH SIG (NEW)

The YOUTH SIG is designed forcomputer-savvy young people inthe 9-15 year age range, along with

their accompanying adults. Weintend to go beyond the basics andoffer a range of activities that arenot widely available in localschools.

On May 24, 2002, we will contin-ue with Web site development andload some files onto a Web site.

At the June 23 and July 26, 2002,meetings we will continue ourbrainstorming on what makes agood web site for a non-profit orga-nization and will begin to try outsome ideas.

On August 24, 2002, GuestPresenter Roger Klingeman, aKIPCUG Member and WEBMAS-TERS SIG TEAM MEMBER will

present TextPad, a multi-windowtext editor with many bells andwhistles that is an ease of use pro-gram, used in web page develop-ment.

Come out and join us on thefourth Friday of each month at 6:30PM in the Computer Lab at ChristChurch United Methodist onBrownsboro Rd. We will adjournby 8:30 PM for snacks at a nearbydining establishment.
