At times it is hard to believe that Kintz Plastics has recently concluded its 38th year of success in the thermoforming industry. Less surprising, however, is the reality that our

Company continues to thrive and expand despite the vagaries of the overall economy.

This summer, for instance, we completed construction of a new building – the 12th on our corporate campus. The addition will enable us to expand our already extensive painting capabilities (see article, right).

Past and potential customers visiting us online will note that we have greatly expanded the information on the newly designed Kintz website. It offers new options for more in-depth information about Kintz and the full scope of our business offerings (page 2).

We’re also excited to have added a new piece of advanced equipment that will be used to inspect components and assemblies, plan production, document large volume spaces or structures in 3D, and more. Called a FARO arm, it brings 3D measurement technology that will allow us to maximize efficiencies and improve processes. It will be an essential tool in our goals to decrease inspection times.

Expanded Paint and Finishing Services

Anticipating increased customer demand for high-gloss painted parts, Kintz completed construction of a state-of-the-art, 1900 square foot facility in June with the goal of creating a dust-free environment to ensure the highest quality of its painted finishes.

The new facility expands our painting capacity from three to five paint booths for all shifts. Typically, the Paint Department at Kintz operates 16-hours a day, five days a week.

Kintz in-house painting facility can provide any color or finish clients require – including water-borne paint and EMI/RFI shieldings. In-house finishing means that we assume responsibility for products from design to finish. The End of an Era: Bill Miller Retires

When Bill Miller retired from Kintz Plastics on May 30 of this year, he took with him decades of memories and the countless well-wishes of a workplace family of friends.

William E. Miller, III -- Bill, as he prefers to be called -- came to Kintz at the age of 28. Over next 34 years, he matured professionally even as the company expanded and excelled to become the region’s acknowledged leader in thermoforming.

Before joining the Kintz company, Bill had been a foreman at a local business. When he heard that a

pending reorganization might eliminate his position, he quickly sought another job. With his wife Anne and three young boys -- Bill, Tyler and Matt (now adults with children of their own) -- to support in the nearby town of Middleburgh, there was no time to lose, he recalls.

“I got lucky and met with Wynn Kintz – his business was right down the road from where I was working.” The rest, as they say, is Kintz history.

“After all these years of dedicated service, Bill is practically a living legend here,” said Kintz. “I know I can safely say on behalf of all our employees, Bill will be missed.”

Bill said that what he will miss most upon retirement are the people and friends he’s come to know and worked with over the past three decades – and, he adds, “Mr. Kintz’s practical jokes.”

During his tenure at Kintz Plastics, Bill became involved in all aspects of the business – doing “whatever I was asked to do,” he said -- and achieved measurable success with each assignment. “Based on that experience, I had learned to do almost anything that was needed,” he said.

Bill credits the company’s on-the-job, in-house training and easy going and supportive workplace high among the reasons for his success at Kintz Plastics.

Among the favorite assignments, he recalls, was the opportunity to work alongside his son Bill in the company’s tool room at one point. Bill’s wife Anne still works at Kintz as manager of the company’s Purchasing Department.

Kintz Plastics has changed considerably since Bill joined the company in 1980 but most notable, he believes, is the company’s capacity to create larger and more complex parts.

As for future plans, Bill is an avid reader and retirement, he expects, will allow lots of time for that. Bill says that he also looks forward to working in his garden – and spending time with his seven grandchildren – four in the immediate area and three in South Carolina; he plans to head south in the coming month.

Despite retirement, Bill aims to remain active in the

Huntersland Methodist Church and activities in the town of Huntersland, a hamlet in the southeast part of Middleburgh, NY. He and his wife will remain in the area. “This is home to us,” he said.

In acknowledging Bill’s many years of dedicated service, company president Wynn Kintz praised Mr. Miller.

For Bill’s part, he hopes that his colleagues at Kintz will remember him as “someone who was here to help wherever [he] could.”

Although a work in progress, the newly re-designed Kintz Plastics website (kintz.com) already has garnered attention from industry watchers and browsers alike. Although months in the making, the online roster of Kintz services, processes, and procedures is easy to follow – with convenient drop down menus that lead visitors to every aspect of the Kintz thermoforming enterprise.

The site’s tagline – Shaping Modern Life – reflects the full spectrum of Kintz expertise – from design, engineering, through fulfillment – in creating handsome and affordable thermoformed plastics to create contemporary exteriors for emerging products.

As we attract more interest – and questions – from potential clients,” said Wynn Kintz, “we wanted to make the site both informative and attractive. Our goal is to make it the gateway to understanding the role of our company in the industry.”

Rather than read about it, we invite readers to visit us at Kintz.com. We look forward to your comments and suggestions.

Shaping Modern Life

Beyond Plastics:A Community Commitment

Kintz Plastics also is a proud sponsor of WAMC Northeast Public Radio, a regional network serving parts of seven northeastern states, which include New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. Other Kintz sponsorships include the Glimmerglass Opera (Cooperstown, NY), Landis, (New York State’s Capital Region’s Arboretum, Esperance, NY) and Proctors, the 88-year-old landmark theatre in Schenectady, NY.

“Even three years after the devastation of the storm, Wynn Kintz continues to honor The Chamber with his company’s hospitality,” says Georgia Van Dyke, Executive Director of the Chamber. “We are so appreciative of his enthusiasm and support for small businesses, for the economic viability of our region, and the goals and successes of the Schoharie Chamber of Commerce.”

Beyond it contributions to industry, Kintz Plastics plays an ongoing and active role in surrounding communities that are important to the quality of life of its employees. Most recently, for example, Kintz Plastics helped to underwrite Memorial Day festivities at the venerable Old Stone Fort in Schoharie, NY.

The Fort celebrates and preserves the rich, historic

legacy of New York’s beautiful Schoharie Valley. Buildings include an early 1700s home, a 1780s Dutch barn, an 1830s law office, and an 1890s one-room schoolhouse as well as the 1772 stone church that was fortified and attacked by British forces in 1780. The event was of particular interest to Wynn Kintz, a well-known collector of historical artifacts and a lifelong student of history.

As a former Board Member and past head of the Economic Development Committee of the Schoharie Chamber of Commerce, Wynn Kintz remains a staunch supporter of the Chamber and its efforts. Following wide-ranging devastation from Hurricane Irene

in August 2011, the Chamber found itself in dire straits with a mud-filled facility, damaged equipment and no place from which to operate its business. Kintz Plastics accommodated the Chamber’s needs with space within the Kintz Technology Center.

Caught off guard, a focused Wynn Kintz watches intently from ringside at one of the dozens of professional boxing matches he judges each year, often taking to the highways for a bout after a busy day at work. He is among a group of 30 people licensed by the New York State Athletic Commission to judge professional boxing matches. Kintz counts many of former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson’s early bouts as milestones in the span of this 30 year avocation.

Despite the intensity of the sport, he says, traveling to matches gives him time to think, relax, and recharge a naturally competitive spirit.

Ringside View

Kintz has been an avid boxing fan since childhood: “I grew up loving the sport and now I’m assured of the best seats in the house,” he says with a smile of satisfaction.

The Dillenbecks Go To Washington

“It was awesome,” said Kasey in a family thank-you note to Mr. Kintz.

“You don’t know how much it meant to me,” added her sister Taylor.

“We still talk about the trip to this day and what a great opportunity it was to see the inside one of this great nation’s National Monuments,” said Heather Dillenbeck. “Thank you again to Mr. Kintz for making this possible!. This is a memory that will not be forgotten.”

When 11-year-old Kasey Dillenbeck’s dream of visiting the White House seemed to stall, her father Scott approached colleague Wynn Kintz, hoping that with his business connections, he might be helpful.
