PROGRAMMEPROGRAMMEPROGRAMMEPROGRAMME Welcome to today’s combined performance with Southern Area Concert Band, Joyful

Strains, Vocally Wild and the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. We trust that you enjoy this afternoon’s program and look forward to getting to know you after the show.

Darryn Wright, Music Director.

• Chattanooga Choo Choo With music originally written by Harry Warren and lyrics by Mack Gordon, Chattanooga Choo Choo was performed in the 1941 movie Sun Valley Serenade by Glenn Miller and his orchestra. The song sat at number 1 on the Billboard Best Sellers Chart for nine weeks from December 7, 1941. Today’s arrangement by Pete Schmutte has been adapted for band and choir by Darryn Wright.

• A Seekers Celebration The Seekers formed in Melbourne in 1962 with Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley. Music and lyrics from today’s medley of popular favourites was written by Jim Dale, Tom Springfield and Malvina Reynolds. This arrangement was written by David Lawrence and has been adapted for band and choir by Darryn Wright.

• Rodgers and Hammerstein on Broadway Richard Rodgers, as composer, and Oscar Hammerstein II, as lyricist, created a string of Broadway hits in the 1940s and 1950s, starting with Oklahoma in 1943 and ending with The Sound of Music in 1959. During this time the duo acquired 34 Tony awards, 15 Academy Awards, 1 Pulitzer Prize and 2 Grammys. Today’s medley, arranged by Mac Huff and adapted for band and choir by Darryn Wright, brings together twelve of their most popular tunes.

• Seasons of Love Music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson and from the 1996 Broadway hit Rent, today’s arrangement is by Roger Emerson and will be performed by the choir accompanied by Clare Monks on the piano.

• One With music composed by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban, One is from the 1975 Broadway hit A Chorus Line, which received 12 Tony Awards, the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and ran for 6,137 performances. It remains the fourth longest running Broadway show ever produced. Today’s arrangement is by Anita Kerr and adapted for band and choir by Darryn Wright.

• Silverscreen An original composition by Paul Hart, written in the style of the silent music accompaniment of the 1920s. Today the band has coupled this with an edited version of Buster Keaton’s The General to re-create the atmosphere of the old movie halls. Many thanks to Andrew Van Gemert of Manningham Concert Band for editing the vision.

MEET OUR CONDUCTORS Darryn Wright joined Southern Area Concert Band in 1997 playing alto saxophone and took on the role of President in 1998. He held this position until taking over the role of the band’s Music Director in 2006 following Craig Seymour’s retirement. Darryn has been playing music (keyboard) since the age of 5, with his first public performance not long thereafter. During his time at Southern Area, Darryn has played alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute and percussion. Other than for the band, Darryn’s passion lies in Musical Theatre and he has been Music Director for several school and amateur theatre company productions. Since moving to Melbourne from Tasmania in 1996, Darryn has also performed with numerous instrumental and vocal ensembles around Melbourne and is currently on the executive committee of the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association. Outside of his musical interests, Darryn works as an electrician and manages an engineering company that specialises in boilers and pressure vessels, and is working through a mid-life crisis as he learns to fly. Robert Dryden owes much of his passion for music to his parents who were both brought up in church choirs and possessed great voices. The musical genes have flowed on to his occupation as Director of Music at Haileybury Castlefield's Brighton Campus, where he has been for the last 6 years. Robert's involvement in both choirs commenced 11 years ago. Five years ago, The Cantartas (an all women's choir) and Broken Voices (an all men's choir) combined to form the choir known today as Vocally Wild. Joyful Strains commenced as a staff choir from the former City of Moorabbin and has lasted throughout the years to accept any interested person!

Robert has a big interest in the local community, having been the Musical Director of the Bayside Carols at Dendy Park for the last 8 years. He is also president of the Eisteddfod by the Bay (formerly Mordialloc Eisteddfod) and coordinates the Choral Festival and Junior Vocal Section. In 2006, he was awarded Bayside's Citizen of the Year award for his contribution to music in the Bayside community. In his free time (!), Robert loves gardening, the St Kilda Football Club and singing songs from the 1960's, especially the Mamas & The Papas and The Beach Boys.

MEET OUR ORGANIST

Scott Harrison has appeared across Australia, New Zealand, the USA and England performing on theatre organs since 1987, and was the City of Moorabbin’s (now City of Kingston) ‘City Organist’ for a period of six years from 1987 to 1993.

Scott had the honour of being invited by the Theatre Organ Society of Australia (Vic.) to perform on the Kingston Wurlitzer at the opening of their 2005 National Convention, which also marked the re-opening of the organ after extensive renovations.

In 1993, Scott undertook organ studies with the late Father James Miller at his home in Fenton, Michigan, USA, and established an on-going relationship with some of the wonderful Wurlitzer instruments in Northern California, Chicago and Kansas.

In Scott’s own words, “Music is what makes the world go round, and I consider myself very lucky to be able to share my music with so many wonderful people all around the world.”
