Do all students start at Level 1?No - you can begin studying with us at any level, provided that you meet all of the entry

requirements of the course,and attend a successful interview.

The Level 2 Diploma is equivalent to achieving four GCSEs at Grade A*- C. They are designed to build knowledge and skills for jobs requiring technical understanding. Successful students could expect to enter work or may progress to the Level 3 Diplomas to gain higher level training for supervisory jobs requiring greater responsibility.

90 Credit and Extended DiplomasThe two year Level 3 Extended Diploma is broadly equivalent to three A Levels. They are advanced courses that develop higher level technical skills and detailed understanding and knowledge about specific subject areas. Extended Diplomas provide an alternative entry route for university level qualifications. The one year 90 Credit Diploma is the equivalent to one and a half A Levels and is suited to students who enjoy a practical learning style and mature learners looking for a career change. Successful students at Level 3 could expect to enter the workplace at a specialist or supervisory level, possibly leading to management positions.

Intermediate Apprenticeships offer a Level 2qualification which is the equivalent to completing five GCSEs at grade A*-C.

The main qualification has been chosen to meet what employers want and the Level 3 courses offer progression to Higher Education with UCAS points. You will be supported to make your decisions before and during the study programme so you can get maximum benefit from your time with us.

Employment Led Curriculum Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise the potential of

young people. To achieve this, they all contain the following:

Here at Kingston Maurward we have residential accommodation for over 50 students. As a resident, you will find living on site has manyadvantages, including the chance to live independently while still benefitting from 24 hour security and support. Our student houses areclose to all lecture rooms and library facilities and college staff are on-hand should you need help outside college hours.

Many of our courses require you to maintain your fitness levels and our on-site Peak Fitness Centre is ideal. Packed with modern running machines, cross trainers, rowers and a range of free weight machines, it’s the ideal place to train. Creating Career ChoicesLevel 2 and Level 3 Public Services students met with veteran service personnel from theRoyalAirForceVolunteerReserve,theArmyReserve,RetainedDorsetFire&RescueServiceandDorsetPoliceSpecialConstabulary to learn from their vast experience, totalling around 130 years!

Agricultural Student of the Year Georgie Cossins won the NFU Agricultural Student of the Year Competition. The sixteen participating students, all studying the second year Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture, competed in tasks covering livestock, machinery and estate skills. A theory test was followed by an interview with a panel of judges including representatives from sponsors C&O Tractors and the NFU.

Finding the Hidden EdgeBusiness students helped to host ‘The Hidden Edge’ Business Breakfast at the College, aimed at helping small businesses to get solutions to their own ‘Wicked Issues’.

Student Success in UK Skills Floristry CompetitionEmily Moore and Laura Bettany scooped prizesinthesouthwestregionalheatoftheUK Skills Floristry competition.

Against the clock competitors produced a shoulder corsage from materials selected by the judges, together with a modern floral arrangement.

Mucky Business raises money for Air Ambulance The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture students raised an impressive £1912 for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance in their annual muckspreading charity challenge – the ‘Muckathon’.

They spread, ploughed and cultivated 55 acres of land over two days using machinery and equipment kindly loaned by agricultural dealers, contractors, farmers and the College.

Apprenticeships AwardsThe Apprenticeship Awards evening was a great success with a record number of Apprentices and employers attending the celebration. Apprentices received awards in a diverse range of subjects including Animal Care, Arboriculture, Equine, Environmental Conservation, Horticulture, Butchery, IT, Retail&CustomerService,andActiveLeisure & Learning.

During 2013, the college saw a 25% growth in numbers from 2012, with a success rate of 82% against the national average of 72%. Student Josh Bailey said...

GlasshousesAward winning actor Edward Fox and his wife Joanna David officially opened two purpose-built state-of-the-art glasshouses for the Horticulture academy. The £850,000 project replaced two outdated polytunnels, a non-operational smaller greenhouse and other buildings.

There are three main levels to choose from, and your predicted GCSEs will help you select the right one for you. Have a look at the Study Programme on page 4 to see how our qualifications match with other qualifications like A levels.

Once we receive your application, we will invite you into college for a friendly interview with a course tutor. This is your opportunity to discuss your chosen course, learn what to expect during your time at college, get information about transport, and discuss any required support. If you have applied for more than one course, you will be interviewed for them on the same day. You will also complete an online initial assessment of your literacy and numeracy before your interview.

It’s always a good idea to get as much information, advice and guidance about your future career aspirations as you can. If you’re not sure what you want to do, our schools liaison and admissions teams can talk you through what we can offer. Nervous, excited? That week in August when the exam results appear can be a stressful one. Don’t worry if your grades aren’t the same as your course requirements, we can help you during enrolment to find another suitable course.

It’s nearly time to start college! Before term starts we hold an enrolment week in late August where you officially become a Kingston Maurward College student. You will need to bring your exam results with you!

College life begins! During your first week in September you will get a thorough induction to the campus and all our facilities plus your tutor will give you your timetable and study plan.

Nearly all applicants find out at interview day whether they have been made an offer to study at Kingston Maurward College, so you can go home safe in the knowledge that you have secured your place!

Kingston Maurward offers the ideal environment for students to develop agricultural and countryside skills at

This course provides the practical skills and knowledge that will help you gain employment in agriculture and the countryside. You will acquire a wide range of knowledge, practical skills and industry experience from both your studies and work experience on a local farm.

The course includes crops, livestock, estate skills and farm machinery

operation and maintenance.Employment prospects for qualified and experienced young people with the right attitude are excellent as the industry is experiencing a skills shortage.

The course is specially designed to develop practical skills and produce students who are able to operate machinery and look after livestock and crops to a high standard.

The course is delivered by lectures, practical instruction, demonstrations and visits. Approximately half the time in college involves practical work.

The Extended Diploma is a well-respected course with an outstanding track record of students entering employment or Higher Education, as it is accepted as an entry qualification for some degree level courses.

During the first year of this course you will completetheunitsfortheLevel3Diploma(seepreviouspage).Inthesecondyearafurthersixunits are taken to gain the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture. The first year provides a thorough grounding in the agricultural industry.

It enables students to understand technical and management aspects of animal and crop production and to carry out a wide range of practical tasks on the farm.

The second year focuses on deepening students’ understanding of the technical and management aspects of animal and forage crop production and enabling them to further develop practical skills. As part of the course, training towards a range of certificates of competence can be undertaken to enhance career prospects.

The course is made up of lectures, demonstrations, practical instruction, farm visits and a study tour. The second year of the course includes a week long study tour to Europe.

Structure

During Year 1 you will complete all 13 units from the Level 3 Diploma in Agriculture.

If you like working outside, and your strengths are more practical based, an agricultural apprenticeship could be for you. Each workplace is different so you may be working with different breeds of cattle, sheep or pigs, or carrying out a variety of tractor tasks depending on your job. Butchery is the preparation and presentation of meat for sale. The role could be serving customers in retail, or be part of the preparation and manufacturing process. Ideal for the sport enthusiast who is keen to participate in a variety of sports whilst studying coaching and fitness at a higher level.

This advanced qualification is designed to develop your understanding of coaching, fitness and sports development. You will learn about the body in sport, exercise and fitness and preparing for working in the industry, as well as developing occupational skills such as teamwork, effective communication and problem solving.

You will gain the skills and expertise to pursue a career in sport and exercise science, coaching, fitness or development. It also provides an appropriate background for those who want to progress to courses in Higher Education. This course forms the first year of the two year Level 3 ExtendedDiploma(seeopposite).

The Intermediate Active Leisure and Learning Apprenticeship is for those who wish to gain a broad, but solid foundation to allow them to follow a career in the outdoor sector or in the active leisure sector as fitness activity leaders and coaches.

In the outdoors, roles will tend to be working withstraightforwardgroupsinlesshazardousactivities, often in controlled environments.

In active leisure, roles will tend to be more of a community focus, and apprentices tend to be employed as activity leaders or sports coaches in community sports centres.

Intermediate - three options:

Leisure Operations: Prepare equipment and facilities for activities, work within a team, promote customer care and ensure health & safety is monitored.

Activity Leadership: Lead and instruct activity sessions safely.

Instructing Exercise and Fitness: Provide fitness instruction to clients, support clients throughout fitness programmes working safely.

Advanced - three options:

Advanced Fitness: Progress your experiences from the fitness instructor towards experience in nutrition, weight management and medically referred clients.

Kingston Maurward College is centrally situated in the heartof Dorset with dedicated subsidised bus services arrivingdirectly onto the campus.

We provide an extensive network of buses and minibuses from most major areas in Dorset including Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole, Yeovil, Weymouth and Portland, Shaftesbury and Sherborne. We also offer services from the Somerset and Wiltshire border. They run five days a week during term time, arriving at 9am and leaving at 5pm. By BusWhy not cycle to college? – keep fit, save some moneyand help the environment. For an alternative cycle route from Dorchester that avoids having to cross the A35, you can turn right 300 metres past Grey’s Bridge and follow the bridleway along the water meadows to the rear of the college campus.

The campus is just off the A35 that runs past Dorchester. It is approximately 20 minutes from Weymouth and 30 minutes from Poole. For those using Sat Nav, use the postcode DT2 8PX. We have plenty of free parking on campus - please just remember to stick to the speed limits!

By Road

The nearest stations are Dorchester West – serving Yeovil, Bristol and Bath, and Dorchester South - serving Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Southampton. It is about a 30 minute walk or 10 minute drive to the College.
