Dear Parishioners,
I’m looking forward to April! Winter
hopefully over and Easter celebrated in
style. Alleluia and thanksgiving for the
story of Jesus’ resurrection, that death
has been conquered and the power of
sin is no more. A light at the end of the
tunnel is there and the company of the
one who has been there to guide us
through the chances and changes of
this life. No wonder the favourite psalm
of all time is Psalm 23 The Lord is my
shepherd, I shall not want…..
Thanks to the flower arrangers and the
choir and David Noon for all their
preparations for the Easter Season!
So April is action packed. April 1st at
11am we celebrate Easter Day with the
church full of new life, fresh flowers and
an Easter Garden with an empty tomb.
After the service the Easter Bunny
appears on the Millennium Green and
there are plenty of Easter eggs for
everyone. April 8th we are having a
slightly earlier service at 10.30am so
that we can have our annual meeting at
11.30am to elect our churchwardens for
the coming year and the Church
Council. Thanks to those who have
served this year – to Jean Barbour and
Dave Davies.
Bishop Richard is coming to join us for
the service on April 15th at 10.30 am.
Do come and hear him speak; he has a
very dry sense of humour and is a good
influence in our diocese. On April 22nd
my eldest son is running in the London
Marathon for Shelter (the homeless
charity). If you are able to sponsor him
you will find a page on Virgin
Moneygiving under Jonathan Read.
On Sunday 29th April it is Rogation
Sunday and this year we are off to the
Cross Family at Lower Cross Farm,
Hereford Land, Kingsland at 10.30am
and definitely a blessing for the
donkeys!! You will notice a newly laid
hedge around the churchyard with
money given at the funerals of some
special people: Richard Hall, Derek
Vaughan and Bill Bowen. A fitting
tribute I hope you will agree.
Thanks for the coats for the homeless.
There have been some lovely coats
brought in and before the end of Lent
they will be off to new owners via the
work for the homeless in Hereford.
I Iook forward to seeing you out and
about in Kingsland as the days
lengthen and the temperature rises!!
Every blessing
Julie

Facing the Panel
Going to your first interview is a big test for a young person. Whether it be auditioning for your college courses, or finding your first job, it is important to make the right impression. To build their skill sets, local year 10 pupils have recently been taking part in mock interviews. The annual interview days are organised with a number of local companies and colleges, including staff from Kingspan Insulation.
Each student is asked to prepare a detailed CV before attending. They are then put through an in-depth interview lasting between 10 and 15 minutes. At the end of the process, the pupils receive detailed feedback helping them to fine-tune their responses and to approach future interviews with much greater confidence.
Over the course of the event, the students also have plenty of opportunity to ask their own questions, both about CVs and interviews, and more generally about potential career paths and the skills they need to develop if they want to follow them.
This year’s events at Wigmore High School and Tenbury High School were a great success with plenty of positive feedback from students and attendees alike.
Louise Murtagh, Work Related Learning Co-ordinator from Wigmore High School, talked about the school’s interview day: “We’ve been running Mock Interview Days for over 20 years as part of our Work Related Learning programme. The event takes place after our students have completed their work experience so they have something specific to reflect upon during the interview. They find it really useful practice for ’real’ college, apprenticeship and job interviews going forward.”
Brilliant Biodiversity
Over the past few Sundays, the nation has been holding its collective breath in wonder as Blue Planet II revealed the breadth of life under our seas. Of course, this diversity isn’t just restricted to our oceans. Our own county of Herefordshire is home to all kinds of plant and animal life, and it is important we do our part to keep it that way.
To encourage young people to get involved in this vital work, and following on from the success of last year, Kingspan recently invited local school children to a biodiversity day at our site in Pembridge. The interactive day opened with a look at just what biodiversity is – covering everything from fish to grasses. The pupils then got stuck in replenishing the bug hotel and making ‘seed bombs’ to encourage wildflower growth around the bumble bee bank.
In the afternoon, the children scavenged twigs, straw and grass cuttings to make hedgehog houses – with a prize given for the homeliest creation. As a final treat, the groups then made bird ‘fat balls’ to put in their own gardens. The combination of meal worms, lard, seeds and peanuts is perfect fuel for birds but encouraged plenty of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’ from the youngsters!
Kingspan has also just received our biennial Biodiversity Report with new recommendations for our site. We’ll keep you up-to-date next year as, with the help of the local children, we put these suggestions into practice.

Bill Bowen
We would like to thank everyone for
attending Bill’s funeral in such inclement
weather. It was so nice to see that he was
respected by so many people in the village
and beyond. He will be greatly missed by
his family and friends, and I am sure many
other people will miss seeing him cycling
in the village.

Parish Council Matters
Information on Kingsland Parish Council
can be accessed via the dedicated ‘Parish
Council’ section at www.kingslandlife.com.
The full minutes of Kingsland Parish
Council meetings are published on this
website. What follows represents highlights
of the most recent meeting of the parish
council, and should not be considered as an
official record of the meeting. The official
record is the agreed minutes of the parish
council.
Welcome to the first Parish Council
Matters article. It is intended to provide
timely information on the parish council for
local people. Matters considered at the
meeting held on 13th
March 2018, included:
1. Co-option of a new member: There is
currently a vacancy on the parish council.
Electoral Services at Herefordshire Council
have asked the parish council to ‘co-opt’ to
this vacancy. If you are interested in
becoming a parish councillor please contact
a councillor or the clerk (07963 845358).
Contact details for all councillors are
available at kingslandlife.com, and
information on the role can be found on
Herefordshire Council’s website
(herefordshire.gov.uk). Alternatively,
come along to the next parish council
meeting on Tuesday 24th April 2018.
2. Traffic Regulation Order for 40 mph
speed limit: Herefordshire Council is to
introduce a new speed limit on the A4110
from Lawton Cross for around 650 metres
to The Bank. The meeting looked at the
latest revision of this, which now includes a
short section of the C1035 opposite the car
auctions. The parish council supported the
revised traffic regulation order.
3. Lorry routing strategy: The parish
council agreed to put the proposed lorry
signing and traffic island on hold
(information on the proposed lorry signing
and traffic island can be found on the news
page of the parish council section of
kingslandife.com). This is to allow for the
consideration of a full survey of traffic
movements in the north west of the county
by Herefordshire Council, which has been
requested by Ward Cllr. Bowen (Bircher
Ward). Informed by this comprehensive
review, Herefordshire Council is expected
to come up with a design to better direct
HGVs and other vehicles.
In addition, the parish council has been told
by the highways authority that the proposed
lorry signing and traffic island should have
the support of neighbouring parishes. A
response to this request by the highways
authority will also be looked at in the
context of the comprehensive traffic
movement survey for the north west of the
county.
The next scheduled meetings of the parish
council are on Tuesday 24th
April and
Tuesday 29th May 2018. The agenda will
be published on kingslandlife.com, and the
parish noticeboard a few days before the
meeting.
The Clerk, Kingsland Parish Council

MORTIMER MEDICAL PRACTICE: News from the Patients Participation Group.
Press Articles relating to hospital referrals
You may have seen recently that some articles in the National Press have maintained that, to reduce over-crowding, GPs were being offered bonuses to reduce the number of patients they are referring to hospitals.
I can report that the Mortimer Practice has never participated in any scheme that offers payment for reducing referrals. Patient interest remains paramount and if a patient in the practice needs a referral they will have one.
Telephone and Email Details
In case the Surgery needs to contact you at any time, for instance about an appointment, it is in your interest that the Surgery has your current details. Even if you think they have your up-to-date information, it ‘s useful to just check by ringing, texting or emailing them. (Having moved home a few yards up Croft Lane relatively recently, I’m ashamed to say I know how easy it is let such details slip your mind.)
Next Meeting
Planned for 24th April and if you have any points you wish to be raised, please contact me on 01568-780891, or ‘[email protected]’.

Nature Notes – April 2018
Folklore has it if March comes in like a lamb it will go out like a lion!, maybe back to front this year – no thanks to the Beast from the East and Storm Emma that clashed over Herefordshire, and the enormous snow drifts and biting cold experienced in the first few days of March. We won’t know yet how much of our flora and fauna was lost. Let’s hope April showers will bring forth May flowers.
There does seem to be plenty of activity in the local rookery and the jackdaws have also paired, carrying out acrobatic manoeuvres over their tree nest sites. The blackbirds are busy fighting for their territories, chaffinches, goldfinches and great tits building up reserves and blue tits busy inspecting nesting boxes.
Thick and thorny shrubs such as red fruited pyracanthas and snowberry attract blackbirds, robins and finches, provide food and shelter from predators. Keep your bird feeders stocked and clean for seed eaters such as finches and others in search of extra food as the season’s nesting progresses.
Look out for our tree creepers and I’ve seen a pair of great spotted woodpeckers – listen out for their distinctive drumming sounds. Hopefully as our farms and gardens awake to the Spring we may be lucky to have a visit from the cuckoo but sadly his distinctive sound has been rare in these parts in recent years.
As Spring slowly emerges the days lengthen, woodland bluebells at Queenswood and also the display at Witley Court, Worcestershire may well
be worth a visit where they have recently planted some 25,000 English bluebells to combat the alien invasion of the Spanish bluebell which has caused problems with hybridisation. There have been similar issues with our native English daffodils, under threat from aggressive and non-traditional bulbs. The weir at Kenchester on the banks of the River Wye is often a sight to behold.

I will be updating the Village Diary this month.

News From The Chapel
On Easter Sunday, 1st April, the
Communion Service will be led by our own
minister, Rev Den Bulloss. Everyone is
welcome to join us and is invited to take
Communion.
Coffee and Company: The next gathering
will be on Tuesday, 24th April at 2.30 – 4.30
pm. Just to clarify a couple of things: you do
not have to play games and there is no
‘religion’! Merely a chance to get out of the
house, see some friendly faces and have a bit
of tea. If you need a lift just ring Edna on
01544 388915 or email Lesley at:
Kingsland Methodists are still “Losing It”.
On Thursdays each week there is a drop-in
weighing session from 2.30 – 3pm in the
chapel. We have some posh new scales.
Names, telephone numbers and weight loss
or gain will be recorded privately. No public
shaming is involved but a prize for the
week’s best ‘Loser’. The entry cost is £1 plus
an item of healthy food e.g. a vegetable or
fruit. The winning ‘Loser’ will be notified by
phone and we will arrange to deliver the
foodstuffs to them.
Lent Study Group: This has been very
inspiring with an average attendance of six. It
has been salutary to examine in detail what a
passage of scripture, learned by heart as
children, really means practically in everyday
life.
The Women’s World day of Prayer service
unfortunately fell victim to the weather.
There will be a collection plate in the chapel
from Palm Sunday onwards for those who
wish to contribute. The money is used to
give grants to organisations all over the world
such as Toxteth Women’s Centre, the
Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, Cumbria
Flood Fund (2016), Happy Child
International (Brazil), Quaker Peace and
Social Witness (Palestine) and Traidcraft

KINGSLAND BOWLS CLUB (midFeb-midMarch 2018) – greens are good for us!
It’s my pleasure to announce that the KBC Spring Newsletter is now out – copies are at the Club - hopefully, dear Members, we can deliver to you if you can’t get there. (Our thanks to Leominster Community Resource Centre for swift and reasonable printing.) This year Fixture Cards are available to all members Full and Social, so please take one; if none remain at KBC, I should be able to find one for you.
Race Night on 16th February went off very well, thanks to Green Super Malcolm and equally super Pat & helpers; the atmosphere was electric, the turkey soup was most welcome – and so was the sight of my nag galloping past the post – several of my horses avoided the ditch, so the question is, will the bowls do the same? (Answers on a postcard; this may be a long shot.) Unfortunately, the Quiz Night of 2nd March was cancelled, a sensible decision given the following snow and wind.
Spring Lunch (Sun 11th March) looked so enticing – but could only deal with cauli & two potatoes (tooth and neck probs - it’s the daily grind!). Still, I managed to mash the delicious pavlova ; dear Malcolm & Pat, Joe & Ruth, waiters & choppers, am so glad I came – it was scrumptious and cheered me up. Numbers were down (greetings to all Mothering /Mothered) but spirits were high – another great Club bunfight.
Sadly, however, we report the sudden passing of John Gresham – a relatively new member, but an excellent bowler, a supportive friend & teammate and a helper with many things including Recruitment and work on the green - his family would like to thank all those who attended his funeral. John was a true sportsman - we shall miss him, and we shall not forget him.
Slabbing has continued, with contractors Kristian Morgan and Roger Godwin excelling - through rain and shine, finishing 3 days earlier than scheduled. Excellence awards also go to our Club workforce; step up (in alphabetical order) Albert, Chris R, Gary, John B, Peter, Rob PM. Have I forgotten Mr Super Green? - how could I?! - we have a number of long-time great supporters, but I single him out to remind all that Malcolm uses not only his own strength and time, but his equipment and contacts to benefit our Club - he deserves our grateful recognition.
And now to April - KBC Spring Clean needs you on Wed 4th April from 9.30 am.
Then there’s the Club Opening Night, Tues 10th April, light buffet (£1.50), info, and socialising. And at last, the one you’ve been waiting for – Sat 21st April, 2 for
2.30, the Captain v. the President – but you can all join in if you sign up!
After this, the green is open, with roll-ups on Tuesday Club Nights. We have our first home fixture v Talgarth on Sun 29th April. HML begins on Wed 2nd May (at Ross); then on Thurs 3rd May we are at home to Wellington. Chocks away!! If you
want to know more about us, please feel free to contact me.

At our March meeting Geoff Tookey gave his advice from a professional chef's point of view. He said that most domestic cooks do not allow enough time when preparing a dish. The answer is to prepare ahead and his salmon tartare can be made the day before it is needed. He demonstrated this and also a dessert, fruity crunch, which is very quick to make just before a meal. Between making the food Geoff gave a history of his life as a chef from his apprenticeship at a de Vere hotel in Coventry where 28 chefs were employed, to becoming to becoming an Executive Head Chef. He had a varied career in many parts of the country, but tired of working long hours and wishing to see more of his family he took a post in a private school in South Wales. In 2006 he set up a company training chefs and advising on health and safety. He is the co-founder and chairman of the regional forum for Food Safety and Health in South Wales.
We enjoyed tasting the dishes Geoff had cooked and also enjoyed his stories of his life and comments about the story of Lady Godiva and the expression being 'Sent to Coventry'. This was possibly to do with the troops stationed there in the past.
At our meeting on 11th April Eileen Dilley will tell us about the 'Social History of Afternoon Tea.’ Everyone is welcome to attend.

‘Not yet! Don’t fly off until the moment they raise their binoculars’
April Joke!
Four older schoolboys afflicted
with Spring fever played truant
one morning. After lunch they
reported to the teacher that
their transport had suffered a
flat tyre.
Much to their relief she smiled
and said, “Well you missed a test
today, so take seats well apart
from one another and take out a
piece of paper”
Still smiling she waited for them
to sit down. Then she said,
”Question 1: Which tyre was flat?”
