Your Child’s Online Welfare Last week we held a Digital Well-being session for parents providing extremely useful information and advice on how to keep your child safe online. In today’s technological age it is important that we keep abreast of the dangers faced by young children on the internet and on social media. The handout is available via the school’s website or via the link below. However if you would prefer a hard copy please contact Mr Fatodu by email [email protected] Please click here or on the image to the right of this text to access a copy of the Parenting in the Digital Age leaflet previously issued to parents.

SCHOOL NEWS cont. Hamlet at the Almeida Theatre

Last week, on Wednesday afternoon, our Year 13 English Literature students went to the Almeida Theatre to watch Robert Icke's production of ‘Hamlet’. The -----------------------------------------students had a wonderful time and enjoyed seeing a contemporary interpretation of the play. The use of CCTV, a Bob Dylan soundtrack and inventive staging proved particularly popular, while everyone enjoyed the comic take on the material. Significantly, the performance will be very helpful when it comes to their Shakespeare exam, as the pupils will be assessed on how they evaluate alternative interpretations of the play. All in all, a great day out!

House News FRIDAY 24th March This week is Miss Agboola’s turn and she has been looking at Ghana.

PROJECT PROFILE A recent census found there are more than 30,000 young girls living and working on the streets of Accra, the capital of Ghana. Many have small children to support. Street Girls Aid provides good quality early years education services, including pre-primary education, to children of these young mothers. Comic Relief helps to fund a number of their services, from early years education, to peer support groups for parents, awareness raising, skills training, saving and loan schemes to help families escape poverty.

Adjoa & Sharifa’s story When Adjoa’s sister died 3 years ago, Adjoa

moved to Accra, Ghana’s capital city to support her 2 nieces along with her 2 youngest children to sell

charcoal to make money. Life was tough so she could not afford to send her daughter, Sharifa

who was 7 at the time, to school. “When we came here there were financial

problems. We didn’t have any money so that made me stop sending Sharifa to school. I only sell charcoal. She washes plates and generally

helps me around but she is not engaged in the selling of charcoal unless I have to go somewhere. The school came to advise me that my daughter is

growing and needs to go to school. I told them that I didn’t have much because I needed to buy

certain things like books and shoes.” Staff at a kindergarten run by Street Girls Aid

urged Adjoa to send Sharifa to regular lessons as she was already behind in her education and

they said even if Adjoa did not have enough money they would not turn her away. The project is a local partner of Street Child Africa, which receives money

raised through Red Nose Day to support parents and provide good quality early years teaching to children who would not otherwise be in school.

“I’m happy that my daughter goes to school now. I’d prefer that my daughter grows up to become a nurse or doctor or goes into the police or military. I will be happy with that.” Sharifa has been attending school regularly for ---several months and teachers hope she will be able -to join her own peer group if she keeps up with ----her lessons.

Sharifa: “I wanted to learn so I always wanted to go to school. I didn’t like selling charcoal. I am

now in school learning. I feel happy that I am no longer selling charcoal and that I’m in school.
