TUESDAY 17 JULY
To mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, theensemble has created a lively programme ofsecular music from the reigns of some of theQueen’s colourful forebears, Henry VIII,Elizabeth I and Victoria. Henry was a man ofmany parts, some more attractive than others. He was, however, noted as a fine musician, andmany musical works have been ascribed to him.
Royal Rhymes and Rounds draws on the courtmusic of the 16th century, including thesophisticated madrigal form which hailed fromItaly. It also reflects the Victorian era whencomposers found inspiration in all aspects oflife from the sublime to the ridiculous.
The King’s Singers have commissioned PaulDrayton, the composer of one of the mostrequested pieces in the King’s Singersrepertoire, Masterpiece, to write a new work. This amusing history will tell of the sometimesprecarious nature of the succession ofEngland’s monarchs since Alfred the Great.
