Chapter Music competition reignited in style

A fter weeks of excitement and preparation

amongst Middle School pupils we were delighted

to host a fantastic Kings Priory School Chapter

Music Competition this afternoon in The Kings Hall.

The whole of the Middle School took part and they were

joined by Senior School Musicians to raise aspirations

and help cheer on their Chapters.

There were two parts to the competition: the Whole

Chapter Sing and soloists or small group items.

Each Chapter sang and in some cases danced with

gusto and enthusiasm but despite the efforts of Hotspur

and Provost the Chapter that really stood out were

Barfleur performing Cups by Anna Kendrick.

Controversially however, after the points awarded for

each Chapter song were added together with the points

gained from first round auditions Dunelm were eventually

named winner of the Best Chapter prize.

The soloists were particularly impressive this year.

Having been whittled down to just eight Middle School

pupils from the many who auditioned over the last

fortnight we were treated to singing, drums, electric and

classical guitar, flute, clarinet, piano, violin and cello

performances from our talented young people.

The Principal Mr Sanderson, who was officially

adjudicating the competition, commented, “The Chapter

Music Competition was a splendid event and I was really

impressed with the standard of musical talent from all of

our pupils. Well done to everyone involved. You should

be very proud.”

.

After careful deliberation the winner was announced as

Middle School pupil Madeleine Johnston from Barfleur.

Overall the afternoon was a wonderful Chapter

celebration and joyous way to start the half term holiday.

Huge congratulations to everyone who took part and

many thanks to the staff for their enthusiasm and

commitment.

First School update

I t has been a very busy two weeks in the First

School with lots of exciting activities taking place.

Year 1 and Year 4 have taken their learning beyond

the classroom and visited Northumberland Park and The

Great North Museum respectively and had a great time.

Thanks to everyone who attended the Parents’ Evenings

over the last two weeks. I hope that you enjoyed the

opportunity to look at the work that your child has been

doing and talk to their teacher about their progress.

As an exciting finale of the term lots of the children

enjoyed our annual PTA Autumn Disco last night.

Thanks to the PTA for organising this excellent event

and all members of staff who came along to support.

After the holidays we are looking forward to a delivery of

new playground games which have been funded by the

PTA and which I know will be gratefully received and

played with by children at break and lunchtime.

Today all pupils attended Holy Saviour’s Church for our

Harvest Festival. This was a lovely occasion and an

opportunity to celebrate and give thanks for our plentiful

crops and food. It was also a chance to think of others,

less fortunate than ourselves by donating ‘Harvest

Boxes’ to North Tyneside Community Meals.

The final Half Term of the calendar year is always action

packed and it is a particularly lovely time to be part of a

First School (see right for some of the key dates).

Could you please note that there will be no Year 3 and 4

Christmas Performances this year as we break up so

early for the holidays. However, both year groups will be

involved in the Carol Service at Holy Saviour’s.

We feel that our performances are a vital part of learning

Chapter Teambuilding Morning

Last Friday marked the first Chapter event of the year

which was a teambuilding morning for Years 1 - 4.

Each Chapter was split into four groups, each with a mix

of ages, which rotated around various activities during

the morning.

This included challenges involving lego models, straws,

newspaper (not all together!), team races, art activities,

creating Chapter shields and many other creative tasks.

There was a real buzz around the School and it was

lovely to see the children mixing so well with each other.

This was particularly true for the Year 3s and 4s who

helped and supported their younger peers, as well as

welcoming members of the Senior Chapter team from

the Huntington Place site.

We look forward to more Chapter events after half term.

Chapter Cake Sales

A massive thank you to everyone in

the First School for their

contributions to the charity cake

sales over the last few weeks.

Each Chapter held a cake sale on

consecutive Fridays and we have

been blessed with good weather,

almost, until the last one last week.

We managed to raise over £800 to support our

International charity which is Conservation Corridors.

Some of the money has also gone to support the

development of the First School Forest School which is

used largely by Reception and Key Stage One children.

This is an incredible amount of money so thank you

again for your help and support.

Double gold in Tae Kwon Do for First School pupil

Year 4 pupil Alexavier Punay recently attended the Tae

Kwon Do UK British Championships 2016 in Stratford.

Alexavier, who is Dunelm Chapter, was extremely

successful in the competition winning two gold medals.

He won gold in patterns and also in the sparring

competition.

On taking part he said: “It was very challenging for me

because I fought with much taller opponents.”

“It was fun though and I really enjoyed the day.”

Well done Alexavier!

Unexpected visitors at Autumn disco

Year 1-4 were in for a treat when a couple of

unexpected visitors came to visit their Autumn disco.

The children, who were dressed as vampires, witches

and ghouls, were thrilled by the arrival of a

Stormtrooper (pictured below with one his fans) and

some of his friends from Ghostbusters.

The big question: was the mystery ‘trooper Mr

Sanderson? They never were in the same room

together. We will leave you to decide on that one...

Page 9: KINGS PRIORY · joined by Senior School Musicians to raise aspirations ... piano, violin and cello performances from our talented young people ... can dress up as evacuees for the

Year 1 Autumn Detectives

As part of their Science topic Seasonal Changes, Year 1

enjoyed a trip to Northumberland Park.

They looked for signs of autumn in and around the park.

The children had their own autumn booklet to complete,

identifying signs of seasonal change through exploring

different leaves, twigs and trees. A fun-filled, educational

morning was had by all!

A huge thank you to the volunteers who joined the trip.

As always your support is very much appreciated.

Information for First School parents

Administration/School Office

To help alleviate the congestion in the School Office

please place any correspondence, return slips etc into

your child’s school bag/wallet, unless otherwise

directed.

Every morning your child’s teacher will ask all children

to empty their wallets and all communication and return

slips will be forwarded to the School Office.

Office Opening hours are 8.30am to 4.30pm

The School Office is an extremely busy place. We ask

for your support by ensuring that your child is fully

equipped for their school day e.g. PE kit, water bottles,

swimming kit, packed lunch, musical instruments etc.

This will help alleviate not only “traffic” to the office but

also, more importantly, reduce the amount of

interruptions to teachers and children during their

lessons.

Absence from school

As detailed in the Parent Handbook would you please

note the following procedure if your child is absent:

Absence Procedures:

If a pupil is absent parents must:

Contact us by 8.30am on each day of absence by

telephoning the First School Office. (If we do not

receive this information we are required to record this

as an unauthorised absence, which will then appear on

your son’s/daughter’s next report. As part of our

safeguarding procedures, you will be contacted on your

son/daughter’s first day of absence if we have not

received notification of their whereabouts.)

Reception have gone Snowdog crazy!

Snowdogs have been appearing around the North East

as part of the 'Great North Snow Dog trail'.

Lots of children began Snowdog hunting a few weeks

ago. Following their interest we decided to set up a

challenge through Tapestry, our new online learning

journey, of finding as many Snowdogs as possible (61

big dogs and 97 little dogs).

We have made a large scale map and plotted all big

dogs. If you see any Snowdogs before 20 November

don't forget to take a picture and send it to us on

Tapestry or email for us to add to the map.

We have also created a giant Snowdog collage of extra

photographs so nobody will be disappointed if they

cannot see themselves on our map.

Get in the Snowdog spirit, down load a trail map and

snap some #Snowfies of the pack. But don’t forget you

must not climb on the Snowdogs!!

Middle School update

A s half term approaches and the evenings draw in

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you

all a happy and restful break.

Last week in assembly we had Tyne and Wear Fire

Service in to talk about the dangers of fireworks. I know

that we sent out valuable advice on how to stay safe and

we wish everybody a safe bonfire night.

This week in School we have had the final of our Chapter

Music competition in a culmination of weeks of rehearsal.

I have been delighted to watch pupils practice and

perform their chosen songs and was especially proud of

the final performances produced by all of the pupils,

regardless of Chapter.

Many more Chapter competitions are planned

throughout this year and I encourage pupils to look at the

Chapter notice board outside of The King’s Hall to see

how their Chapter is doing.

The Year 8 prefects (pictured above) have finalised the

clubs that they will be running after half term. Pupils will

be given the chance to sign up for Art/Dance/Fitness and

Pokemon club that will take place during Middle School

Lunch. Sign up begins the week we return.

I would also like to thank the prefects and all other

Middle School pupils who volunteered to help at this

weeks successful Year 7 Open Evening. Visiting parents

commented on the mature attitude and welcoming

nature that was shown by our pupils. High praise indeed.

This is also echoed through my classroom visits. Pupils

are always happy to talk about their work and show off

their learning. I have been especially pleased to see how

engaged and eager they are in all lessons visited.

Next half term we have the Scholastic Book Fair arriving

in the second week and on 10 November we are

delighted to welcome the Enigma machine into school.

They both promise to be exciting events with many

activities planned for our Middle School pupils.

Mr Robertson

Fencing success for Provost pupil

Middle School pupil Alexander Sisterson (Provost)

has taken up fencing and recently entered a

competition called The Pumpkin Challenge.

He was taking part against children aged 10 and

under from other regional schools and eventually

reached the finals.

His last match was against the Under 10s British

Champion Toby Aberdeen. Alexander eventually

came 3rd in his year group. Well done!

Senior School update

A t the end of the first half term of this academic

year I would like to congratulate the vast majority

of our pupils in Senior School for settling quickly

into their work. New courses have begun for our Year 9s

and Year 12s as they embark on their GCSE and AS or

A Level studies.

In both of these year groups the fresh challenges of new

courses is there for all and this half term has seen pupils

start out on the road towards success.

For Year 12 the added privileges of being in our Sixth

Form have been welcomed and as is only appropriate a

greater responsibility on independent study has also

been noticed. They have had support and guidance in

this area and with a Parents’ Evening last night, pupils

should be very clear about where they stand

academically.

Fostering positive study habits is not just important for

our new Sixth Formers, as in Year 9 the seriousness of

GCSE study should now be apparent for all.

Our expectations for all pupils is that they are well

prepared for lessons and that they have dedicated the

required time to their work outside of lessons as well.

Being punctual, prepared and willing to actively

participate is a given for all our pupils.

And I have seen that commitment in classrooms this half

term with brilliant work from Year 11 English pupils

focusing on Macbeth and in the same faculty with Year

9s studying Lord of the Flies.

In Physics I witnessed a passionate discussion amongst

Year 11s on radiation and I have been privileged to

watch some of our Year 13s present their EPQ findings.

Those presentations really were of the highest quality.

Next half term will bring mock examinations for Year 11

and Year 13 in early December and they have already

been briefed on those exams. We take these rehearsals

seriously and expect the pupils to do so too.

They should be using the half term as an opportunity to

prepare as well as rest. There are Parents’ Evenings and

Grade Cards and reports for several year groups after

half term to keep a close eye on the progress of all our

pupils.

Away from the classroom the first wave of Chapter

competitions has begun in this last week of half term with

rugby and music in the spotlight. I have already been

teased by the Year 10s over the lack of success of my

Chapter in their year group’s competition. I am sure this

will not be the way the rest of the year goes! I very much

hope the competitions will become a feature of our

School this year and in years to come.

I hope all have a safe and restful half term holiday.

Pupil invited to dance with Disney stars!

Year 10 pupil Abbie Anderson from Barfleur recently

entered a Disney on Ice competition and was lucky

enough to be picked as winner.

Abbie won an amazing opportunity to train and skate

with the Disney on Ice performers yesterday at the

Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.

The Disney on Ice cast (pictured above with Abbie)

went on to perform the hit Frozen at the arena

yesterday evening. Well Done Abbie.

On Thursday 13 October the Middle School went to the

Theatre Royal in Newcastle to watch the magical

production of Mary Poppins. It was magic!

Mary Poppins had trick after trick, she flew above the

audience right up to the amphitheatre and I still have no

idea how she magically appeared on the stage when she

first arrived into the Bank’s home.

Everyone had fun throughout whether it be clapping

along to Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious or just enjoying

the singing and dancing.

Bert (Matt Lee) was incredible when he danced and sang

upside down. My favourite part of it was when Mary

Poppins (Zizi Strallen) told Mr Banks (Neil Roberts) that

she “didn’t explain anything!’ after him asking her to

explain why his house was full of chimney sweeps.

I loved how Mary Poppins could tell the children’s

personalities from her tape measure, Michael measured

“annoying and mischievous’

We Year sixes think that Mary Poppins should have

measured Mrs Andrews as ‘mean, horrid and rude!’.

Altogether it was ‘practically perfect in every way!’

By Kitty Evans, MB5. .

Mary Poppins is a brilliant musical that should not be

missed! The characters were very relatable, and the

singing was excellent.

The story was exciting and the acting was terrific. The

costumes ere colourful and vibrant and the atmosphere

was buzzing. It was the best musical I have ever seen.

Overall, I rate this musical 10/10.

By Theodore Pitsis, MH4.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, but in no way atrocious!

On Thursday 13 October a group of Middle School pupils

were astounded by the performance of Mary Poppins at

the Theatre Royal.

A wave of excitement flowed strongly through the crowd

as Mary Poppins flew so close to them that they could

nearly touch her.

This classic story was brought to life by songs such as

Feed The Birds, Jolly Holiday, Step In Time, and of

course, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, as well as

amazing actors and actresses.

Zizi Strallen portrayed a mesmerizingly believable Mary

Poppins, Matt Lee made a lovable and funny Bert, and

Cameron Lant and Felicity Biggs played the ever-

changing personalities of Jane and Michael Banks.

Clapping until their hands hurt became unavoidably

contagious throughout the audience, and seeing

performances at the Theatre Royal should definitely be

something to be continued in our school.

Sadie-Rosa Jefferson, MB3.

Girls football

The U13 and U15 girls football teams played in a

tournament at the North Shields Soccerdome last

Thursday and had a fantastic afternoon of games. Each

team came 3rd in their respective competitions. This was

particularly impressive for the U13 team who were all

from Year 7.

The U15 girls team will start their league season off on

Wednesday night in the U16 Central Venue league at

John Spence High School.

Cross country

Pupils took part in the Northumberland Schools Cross

country Championships recently. The School had 48

runners in total From Years 3 - 6 competing in the

competition at Gateshead stadium. The team of the day

were our Year 5 boys who won the event repeating their

success from last year.

Well done to all the girls who

competed in the TWSSA cross country

at Haydon Bridge. Especially notable

performances came from Lottie

Tickner who was 2nd in the Junior race

and Freja Smith who was fourth.

Congratulations to Martha Tickner who won the Year 6

girls race a fantastic achievement after winning the year

5 race last year, with the team coming 5th overall.

As ever it has been a very busy term of sport for the

department and the last two weeks have been no

exception. The weather has been very kind as we head

into Autumn and very few fixtures have been disrupted.

The U12 A and B teams were in action against RGS. The

A team won and the B team played well but drew.

The U12 ABC took on Dame Allan’s and Newcastle

School for Boys last Friday. The whole of Year 7 played

a fixture against the other two schools in a festival and it

was great to see the progress of the boys but also to see

them representing Kings Priory School.

The 1st XV took on Queen Elizabeth High School,

Hexham in the Natwest Cup and despite a spirited

performance the side lost 25-7.

They also played Dame Allan’s recently and lost 35-7.

Despite two loses the spirit and commitment of the team

is excellent and they are a real credit to the School.

. This week was the first Chapter Rugby event for Year 9,

10 and the Senior boys.

It was very competitive affair where all the boys got to

play, test their skills and represent their Chapter. The

rivalry is strong and there were some very close games.
