Seeing Bill Books raising cattle and growing grapes on the farm where he grew up attending Hardin school, one might assume his life has not been very interesting. How wrong that would be.

After graduating from Fulton High School and then college with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, Bill entered the military.

Upon graduation, Bill became a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. After basic, he attended flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama, and received his flight wings in 1981. From there, you could say, his career took off.

In his 24 1/2 years in the military, Bill has lived the life that most of us know only through books and movies. He became a Master Aviator and Parachute Jumpmaster, grew proficient in flying numerous aircraft, and was deployed or supported many military campaigns—Desert Storm in Iraq; Operation Just Cause-Panama; Restore Democracy-Haiti; Gothic Serpent- Somalia; Endure Freedom-Afghanistan; and Iraqi Freedom- Iraq. He served with the 160th SOAR—Special Operations Aviation Regiment—also known as Night Stalkers.

He has been around the world—Europe, the Caribbean, Korea, the Middle East and other regions. “The most meaningful time was when I got into Special Ops,” he says. He was in the United States Army Special Operations Command his final 12 years in the military. This is where Bill flew with the country’s finest warriors, such as Navy Seal Teams and Army Special Forces and Rangers, on covert missions.

“These are highly trained personnel, a select group of people who can adapt to changing situations and conduct their missions successfully.” Bill flew some such missions, so secretive that he won’t discuss them even now, years later. “They’re the silent warriors. People don’t hear about them unless something goes wrong. If it was on the news, it wasn’t a good thing.”

In Bill’s final assignment, he served as the Director of Special Operation Forces Support Activity, a 1,600 employee organization providing logistical services and equipment modifications for deployed special operations.

In addition to a successful career, Bill would smile and tell you the smartest decision he ever made was marrying his high school sweetheart, Liz who he has been married to for over 34 years. Their union resulted in his proudest accomplishment of having and raising three sons: Madison (a CPA), Will (2nd Leutenant currently in flight school), and Paul (a senior at the University of Missouri). Two beautiful daughters-in-law, Madi and Amy, round out the family. Last year, Will and Amy gave Bill and Liz their first grandchild, Hudson; and in July, Madison and Madi will give them a second grandson.

In 2004, Bill was inducted into the Fulton High School Wall of Fame. He was a 1975 State Wrestling Champion at 145 lbs, In 2013, son Paul also earned state championship—that makes Bill and his son the first father/son state champions from Fulton High School.

Retired from the military, Bill now works full time at Ameren’s Callaway Nuclear Plant as a Maintenance Coordinator and serves as the Chair for the Ameren Military Veteran Employee (AMVE). Son of Lurin and Elizabeth Books, Bill Books is a member and trustee of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, an ever important part of his life and the same church his family has attended since its inception in 1879.

Guest of HonorSteve McVeigh

Steve McVeigh was born to parents Mr. & Mrs. Odie McVeigh of Fulton in 1950. He attended the rural Lamar (one room) Elementary School for eight years and Fulton High School 1964-68 where he excelled in varsity football, track, debate and was elected to the National Honor Society and student body vice president. After graduating from FHS in 1968 as class valedictorian, he attended the University of Missouri at Rolla (now MS&T) under both academic and athletic scholarships where he was a four-year starter letterman on the varsity football team. He graduated with a BS degree in Civil Engineering from UMR in 1972 where he was named the outstanding senior student in Civil Engineering by the Kansas City Chapter of the ASCE. He was also awarded the Distinguished Military Student Award in the Army ROTC program serving as student brigade commander. Upon graduation, he

received his officer commission as 2nd Lieutenant and served in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1980 retiring as a captain. In 2009, Steve was selected to the MS&T Athletic Hall of Fame with the 1969 Football Team and received an honorary

post-graduate Professional Degree at the 2010 fall graduation ceremonies. He remains active in University alumni academic & athletic academies and maintains an endowed scholarship fund in Civil Engineering for worthy Missouri resident students. Since retirement, Steve has also periodically served as a guest lecturer on topics of “international business” for MBA programs at Harvard, Indiana and Rice Universities.

Steve’s hobbies include golf, ancestry research and with his wife, Janet, enjoying their three grandchildren, a vacation home in Southern California and international travel where they have visited 65 foreign countries. Steve’s ancestral roots run deep in Callaway County as a namesake of his Great-Great Grandfather who homesteaded east of Fulton in 1825 from Virginia on the very farm where Steve grew up and remains in the family today. Steve has been a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church (NE of Fulton) since childhood and returns there often for worship while visiting his three siblings and many extended family members and friends still living in Fulton.

Steve has served as an Executive Advisor for the WorleyParsons Group since 2011 providing strategic advice for technical projects and management consulting activities with North American energy companies. Prior to that, he was on the Advisory Board for the Celerant Consulting Company from 2005-2011. He retired from the Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies in 2004 after 32 years of service in the domestic and international upstream sector. From 2000-2004, he served as CEO for Sakhalin Energy Investment Company living in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Moscow, Russia. This JV owned partnership-company manages the Sakhalin II Production Sharing Agreement with the Russian Federation and is the first offshore and LNG (liquified natural gas) development project ever attempted in Russia. Under his leadership, Sakhalin Energy and its shareholders (Shell, Mitsui & Mitsubishi) reached a positive final investment decision for a $15+ billion integrated oil and LNG development project and constructed one of the largest and most complex grass-roots oil and gas development projects ever attempted in the world.

Prior to joining Sakhalin Energy, Steve served as VP Production for all of Shell’s domestic USA operations including the offshore Gulf of Mexico starting in 1998. He also served on the Board of Directors for Enterprise Products LLP and Enventure Global Technologies (a Halliburton JV). From 1996-1998, he was Chief Operating Officer for Altura Energy Ltd., a Shell-Amoco-BP partnership for E&P operations in the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico. Previously he worked in assignments

of increasing engineering, operations and planning responsibilities in most of Shell’s domestic USA onshore and offshore oil & gas portfolio.

Steve joined Shell in 1973 in Los Angeles, California after graduating from the University of Missouri, Rolla with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He has been married to his wife, Janet, for 42 years and they currently reside in Spring, Texas near their family of three sons.

The McVeigh family: Back row - L-R: Natalie and Stephen (Skip) McVeigh with children Avery and Aiden. Janet and Steve McVeigh - directly behind Steve is Scott McVeigh, Todd, Melanie and Devon McVeigh.
