In early summer, King Norodom I said that he planned to visit the Philippines.



AUGUST 8, 1872Some Filipinos during Spanish period had

their first look at a real live king when King

Norodom I of Cambodia arrived in Manila with

his retinue for two week visit.



The king, then 38 years old stayed at a mansion of the Count Of Aviles On San

Sebastian Street.



The King was given all the

usual courtesies and he was able

to visit some provinces in the

Philippines.



First time, as it turned out and the only time that a monarch country would

ever visit the island of colonial epoch



Upon arriving in Bulacan, the King and

his party were met with much festivities by the leading citizens. Their daughters and ladies

were in their best clothes and were

presented to the King who acknowledged

each lady with a gift.



He wrote a historical column in Spanish newspaper , El Debate, that King Norodom I fell in love with a pretty Bulakena from Calumpit,

but nothing came of this romantic affair.

In one of the pauses during the dance King Norodom proposed to marry Josefa and make her the “first queen” of his country.

WHY SHE REFUSED TO MARRY KING NORODOM

I?



There was a problem of Religion. She cannot give up Catholicism to marry a man who had the right to have

more than wife.

Josefa “Pepita” Roxas died a spinster in

1883. King Norodom I died April 24, 1904

THE GINTONG GRANADA WAS STOLEN YEARS LATER AND NEVER RECOVERED.



Prince Norodom Sihanouk went to Santo Domingo

Church in Quezon City to see one of the

church’s jewelry .

Ana Roxas .

“There was a Filipino Colony in Cambodia close to the Royal Palace. Some Filipinos

even served in the Palace as soldiers when my grandfather Norodom I sat on the

throne in 1860”



According to his Son that…• Before King Norodom I returned, he made

arrangements to bring back Phnom Penh a group of Filipino musicians to form the Royal Brass and Reed Band. When he returned, he promoted the officers of his Tagalog Militia.
