VOLUME 13 ISSUE 11 JUNE 2015 A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SOLOMON AGIN KINDNESS Kindness cannot be forced upon people. It must flow easily and naturally from one human personality to another. Real kindness is the spontaneous expression of the deeply religious and helpful soul. There is a wonderful story of a scoutmaster who, during a meeting of his troop, stressed the necessity of doing a good deed every day. At the next meeting, he asked if anyone had performed a good deed that day. A little boy stood up and said, “Joe and I helped an old lady cross the street this afternoon.” The leader said, “That is nice, but did you have any difficulty?” And the scout replied, “As a matter of fact, yes. She did not want to go, but we insisted.” Kindness says, “Do not interfere with other people’s lives under the pretense that you are kind.” Kindness says, “Refrain from offering advice when no one really wants it.” Kindness says, “Do not point out a fault when it is all too obvious anyway”, because one can also kill with kindness. And speaking of kindness, one must also remember to be kind to one’s self. Some of us are very helpful to others and willing to go to great lengths to understand them, but have not learned the art of accepting and being kind to ourselves. If you commit a wrong, can you not be kind to yourself and forgive yourself? After all, you are just a human being. Can you not be kind to your mind and read a challenging book for a change? It is time to stop underestimating your intellect. Can you not be kind to your own faith and feelings and come to the synagogue for no other reason than because you need to express a sense of wonder and worship? How about making this week “Be Kind to Yourself Week”? -‐-‐ and that means being kind to your best and most worthy self!

A MESSAGE FROM BOARD RECORDING SECRETARY JUDI MIGDOL Another season is over. The snowbirds have left – well, most of them – and we are here to have a wonderful summer. In the last couple of Shaloms, our board members have thanked those that work so hard for the Temple and have mentioned all of the wonderful activities and functions we had this past year. Now it is tie to plan for next year. We know the Rabbi will continue the successful Lunch and Learn with the Forward newspaper. Those of us that attended learned so very much and enjoyed ourselves too. The maximum class is 15 and we always filled up. I suggest that those who have not attended sign up as soon as the dates are announced. You will not be sorry. Our Jewish Mini Film Fest was wonderful. We saw great movies, had interesting discussions, and the camaraderie was always there. Do yourselves a favor and come to the next one. It is always open to everybody in the community – and it is a learning experience, along with an enjoyable evening. It is a win/win function. It is always free and there are always good “noshes” to eat. We will again be one of only three Synagogues in southwest Florida to be able to obtain the DVDs from the New York City 92nd Street “Y”. Don’t miss them. You feel like it is a live presentation right in front of you. They are wonderful interviews – and people pay a lot of money to see them. For us, it is paid for by the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund. Come out and enjoy – and yes, there will be refreshments. The Ruby Tuesday fundraiser is also a win/win. We have lunch or dinner at Ruby Tuesdays on specified days and the Temple gets back 20% of our bill. You dine with friends and are making a donation at the same time. These are just a few of the function we will again have this year. Of course there will be new ones. If you have any ideas for new ones, please let us know. Our Temple is a wonderful home and we are a wonderful “family”. Come out and worship with us, come out and enjoy with us, and come out and do yourselves a favor. You won’t be sorry. I hope to see you next season.

New Fundraising Tool for the Temple Amazon Smile is a charitable component of Amazon Corporation that provides income to charitable organizations, such as the Temple, based on purchases made by Amazon customers who have identified the Temple in their Amazon profile. It is very easy to sign up. You just have to go to the following link:
https://smile.amazon.com/ch/51-‐0198480.
Select Jewish Community of Port Charlotte as your charity. Thereafter, go to:
httpsd://smile.amazon.com
to make your Amazon purchases. One-‐half of one percent of your purchases is donated to the Temple. If you are Amazon Prime, you will receive free shipping when shopping on Smile.Amazon.com. You may change the charity you support at any time. It is that simple and the Temple will get a check quarterly from Amazon. Mike Post tried this and said, “I signed up already and made a purchase. Couldn’t be easier.”

You are encouraged to bring a non-‐perishable food item as a sign of a “Mitzvah of Concern”. When the bins are filled, we deliver them to St. Vincent de Paul’s food bank. Please remember that we have an obligation to help those who are in
need in the community.
If you know of any member of the congregation who is ill or in assisted living/nursing home, please contact Judy Falk at 941-‐627-‐8908 or email her at [email protected]. The Temple has instituted a Sunshine Correspondent and she needs your help in identifying these people, so they will know that we are thinking of them. Thank you. (See form on table in Temple). Please be aware that rides to and from Temple for Shabbat services can be arranged. Please call Judy Falk at 941-‐627-‐8908 if you are in need of a ride, or are willing to provide a ride for a member. Do you play an instrument? Rabbi Agin would like to organize a small musical group to play once a month on a Friday evening for Shabbat. If you have some musical talent, please let Nicole or Rabbi Agin know. It would be wonderful to create something different for a Shabbat service. Do you have any GOOD IDEAS for the Temple – functions, fundraisers, committees? If so, please let us know. Please contact any board member with your thoughts. This is your temple and we want your input!!!! Would you like to sponsor an Oneg Shabbat? It could be for a life cycle event – birth of a child, birthday, anniversary, or just to do it. Please call Naomi Alexander or Marlene Friedman to schedule it. Would you like to advertise in the Shalom (and reach all of our congregants)? Please call Judi Migdol at 941-‐764-‐0992 for information. We have a wonderful library in Temple Shalom. Please let us know what kind of books you would like us to obtain for your reading pleasure. Please visit our new web page – www.TempleshalomFL.com.
Please purchase your gift cards at the Temple every other month. Any questions, please call the Temple office at 625-‐2116.

SISTERHOOD BIRTHDAY/ANNIVERSARY CALENDAR Although it’s only June, half-‐way through 2015, we’ll be “working” on the 2016 calendar, our 23rd issue, over the summer. YOU are NEEDED to support this project, one of Sisterhood’s most successful fundraisers! How does it work? For a minimum of $5.00, you receive one calendar and can list up to five names on the appropriate dates. Many of you have had your family’s significant dates listed for years, but haven’t paid your $5.00. PLEASE DO IT NOW!!! There is a form included in this bulletin, which you can use to order your 2016 calendar, or pick one up from the table in the Temple lobby. If there are no changes, you can just write “SAME AS LAST YEAR.” If you’ve never ordered a calendar, now is the time to do it! Any questions?? Please contact Joyce Greenwald, 575-‐2815, or [email protected] NOTE: Most of the profit is made from the ads that appear on the calendar. If you are a professional or a businessperson who would like to support Sisterhood with your ad, let Joyce know. If you patronize a professional or a business, why not ask them if they would consider advertising? We’d love to have a beautician’s ad, a vet’s ad, or any other service we don’t currently have. It’s only $50.00 for a “single” ad.
