The Kimberley Senior Projects Society has been trying for several years to proceed with an affordable housing project on the land owned by the Society on Church Ave-nue — specifically where the old Pioneer Lodges sit.
They have appealed to Council, through Society Treasurer David Biggs, to renew a $2000 grant, previously awarded to the Soci-ety but never used. The grant is for an afford-able housing needs assessment.
The Society has been having conversa-
tions with Columbia Basin Trust and BC Housing about the potential for redevelop-ing the land.
Biggs told Council that in order for BC Housing to move ahead there has to be a current study indicating need. The last for-mal assessment was done in 2008 and the Society’s last informal assessment was com-pleted in 2012.
The Society is proposing a telephone sur-vey of between three and four hundred ran-domly selected households to poll opinions about affordable housing needs in Kimber-ley and to identify specific groups, such as seniors, single parents, people with disabili-
ties etc. who might be in need of affordable housing.
Council agreed to provide the $2000, however, Coun. Kent Goodwin added the proviso that the Society make sure that BC Housing approves the methodology of the study so that it is valid in their eyes.
Coun. Darryl Oakley commented that the study results may be interesting.
“It could catch us by surprise. What was not a need ten years ago may be now.”
Mayor Don McCormick said he would not surprised to see single mothers with kids join seniors as a sector being in need of af-fordable housing.

RCMP were searching Cranbrook’s Southview area Thursday for a third suspect in a pawn shop break in.
FOR THE BULLETIN
A combined effort by a number of detach-ments and units includ-ing a helicopter result-ed in the arrest of four individuals believed to be involved in a break and enter.
The incident started just before midnight on Jan 28 when Cranbrook RCMP received a report of an alarm at a local pawnshop. Upon atten-dance police found the gates open and a num-ber of items missing. Video surveillance indi-cated at least three sub-jects wearing gloves and masks were in-volved.
A short time later of-ficers located two sus-pects at a local motel who were arrested in relation to the break in. While arresting the male and female, noise was heard coming from the bathroom. RCMP entered the bathroom and found the window was taken out and it ap-peared someone had exited through the win-dow. Moments later a black VW Jetta was seen leaving from behind the motel. The vehicle took off at a high rate of speed toward Fernie. Officers conducted pa-trols toward Fernie, when they observed the suspect vehicle coming towards them 177km per hour. Officers acti-vated their emergency equipment in an at-tempt to stop the vehi-cle; it did not stop and in fact sped up.
Police Dog Services attended and deployed the spike belt on high-way 3, just east of Cran-brook, the suspect Jetta managed to evade the belt and continued into Cranbrook. A second RCMP member at-
tempted to stop the ve-hicle but again the vehi-cle managed to maneu-ver around the police vehicle. Due to safety concerns the pursuit was terminated as the vehicle continued at a high rate of speed down the Cranbrook strip, running red lights. Ex-tensive patrols failed to locate the black Jetta.
Later in the morning the black VW Jetta was found abandon, which had been stolen out of Alberta, in the South-view area of Cranbrook. Area residents alerted police to two suspects seen in the area. Police converged on the area and were able to locate and arrest one subject. Extensive patrols failed to locate the second subject and police asked residents to be vigilant and call 911 if the subject was seen.
Shortly after noon a resident contacted po-lice when he observed a suspect fitting the de-scripting checking vehi-cles. Police headed to the area and while on route noted a grey Ford Pickup leaving the area with the suspect driv-ing. Emergency equip-ment was activated but the driver failed to stop. Due the erratic driving behavior police did not pursue the suspect but attempted to monitor its location using un-marked units.
Numerous units were dispatched to parts of Cranbrook and highways to contain the area. A local helicopter was deployed and began searching the area. The stolen truck was seen traveling out of the Cranbrook on Gold Creek Road.

The owner of a Golden Retriever who was stolen Friday, Jan. 23, is hoping for her quick return. Roxy, eight years old, is about 80 pounds and very friendly and outgoing, according to her owner. She was taken from the 1900 block of Kelowna Crescent in Cranbrook on Jan. 23, at about 8 p.m. The owner says her roommate was hurt chasing after the suspects while they drove away. Anyone with any information on Roxy’s whereabouts or information on the two females who took the dog are asked to contact CrimeStoppers or the RCMP. They were driving a 4-door compact car. Roxy’s owner says they have two two-year-old black dogs themselves.

Celebrating literacy with
Friends of the Library
For the Bulletin
The Friends of the Kimberley Library host-ed a fun Literacy morn-ing on Saturday at the Kimberley Library to celebrate Family Litera-cy Day. Over 60 adults and children enjoyed reading and participat-ing at the wonderful li-brary event - one of the many Family Literacy
Day activities held in Kimberley this year. Family Literacy Day is a national awareness ini-tiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the impor-tance of reading and en-gaging in other litera-cy-related activities as a family. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development.
Thank you to readers Darryl Oakley and Rick Prasad. There was a good turnout that en-
joyed the reading , games , a visit from Kris-ta Grasdal from the SPCA and refreshments.
There were draws for book prizes with the winners being Emily , Effie, Joey, Annika, Hanna, Brooklyn , Ben , Tristen, Carmyn, Micah, Nico and MayLyn. The grand prize of a gift cer-tificate (for books of course!) went to Petra and her mom Ingrid. Thank you to the many Friend Volunteers for making this event possi-ble.

Just because it’s the end of January doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty going on at the Kimber-ley Alpine Resort. In fact, this Saturday, Jan-uary 31 offers a full day of activity and gives you plenty of reason to head up to the ski hill.
It starts off at 10:30 a.m. with a Zone GS race on the Main for under 12, 14 and 16 ski-ers. Live music in the Stemwinder featuring Dan Vacon of “The Dudes” begins at 3 p.m. A bonfire and marsh-
mallows in plaza are planned and awards for tje Zone GS Race begin at 4 p.m.
Then it’s night skiing beginning at 5:30 and this session features a special Dual Night Ski Race (starts below bridge and ends be-tween Conference Cen-tre and Lift).
An outdoor barbe-cue and patio drinks are available, music and disco lights in the Plaza while you watch awards for the race. Then head into the Stemwinder for live music featuring “Highkicks” at 8 p.m.

The decision for four members of the Bounti-ful polygamist commu-nity to be tried by judge or jury was put off in Creston Law Courts Thursday morning by Judge Ron Webb.
Winston Blackmore, James Oler, Brandon Blackmore and Emily Blackmore were to se-lect their choice of trial today, having previous-ly appeared in court Dec. 9 for the same pur-pose.
“We’re making good progress in advising Mr. Blackmore as to his op-tions,” said Winston’s lawyer by phone.
Winston, who did not appear, and Oler lead separate factions in Bountiful, and were charged in August with polygamy, the indict-ment alleging Black-more has 24 wives and Oler four.
Crown counsel Tom Arbogast explained there are “multiple terabytes of disclosure” to go through while the decision is being made.
“It’s a fairly unwieldy process,” he said.
The election date for Winston and Oler’s trial was moved to March 26.
Oler, Emily and Brandon have been charged with unlawful-ly removing a child under 16 from Canada with the intent that an offence of a sexual na-ture would be commit-ted outside Canada. Their election date was put off until Feb. 26; Oler plans to be work-ing in Athabasca, Alta., and will appear by phone.
“We do have some concerns about this matter getting dragged out,” said Arbogast.
Also today, Emily asked to have her pass-port returned so that she can shop in the U.S., mainly for herbs; she took the herbal practitioner course at Creston’s College of the Rockies.
“We have spoken to the RCMP and there’s a belief there could be a flight risk,” said Arbo-
gast.She and Brandon
are charged with “wrongful removal of a child from Canada,” he added, and it is be-lieved they have an “ex-tensive network of con-tacts in Utah and Arizo-na.”
“I have responsibili-ties,” responded Emily. “I’ll return.”
COTR instructor Ra-chel Beck stood up on behalf of Emily.
“Her commitment to her family is so strong,” said Beck, who offered to act as surety if the passport is re-turned.
Webb asked Emily to present material on Feb. 26 showing him reason to return the passport, saying that shopping in the U.S. made the passport “nice to have as op-posed to compelling.”
Winston and Emily previously appeared in court Dec. 4 to say they had retained counsel. Oler, whose faction is said to keep close ties with the followers of Warren Jeffs in the U.S., sent a similar message through Crown coun-sel. They initially ap-peared Oct. 9 without counsel, after being charged in August.
Election for Blackmore and Oler
trials postponed again in Creston court A police observer was
able to direct units on the ground toward the vehicle. The driver then got the truck stuck in the snow, which allowed police to move in with-out the risk of the driver fleeing. The male was taken into custody with the assistance of a police dog.
Police were very con-cerned about the erratic driving observed and employed a helicopter to safely search and monitor the stolen vehi-cle to reduce the risk to
the public.The investigation is
very involved and is still ongoing. Different names and identifica-tion has been found and police are in the midst of confirming their identi-ty. Police are also learn-ing that some of the sub-jects may have outstand-ing warrants and could have been involved in other incidents. Three males and one female are facing a number of Criminal Code charges and police plan to hold a bail hearing Friday.

Are you interested in doing something that will help the thousands of homeless animals in our Province? The BC SPCA has a few suggestions for B.C.’s animal lovers for 2015:1. Get moving! Get yourself and your dog(s) off the couch and into the out-doors. Most dogs need walking at least twice daily to stay healthy and you will benefi t too. If you don’t have a dog, why not volunteer to walk dogs at your local shelter?2. ID your pet. The SPCA reunites thousands of lost animals with their families every year. Many animals are never claimed, however, and must be adopted into new homes because they have no ID. Ensure your pets have identifi cation tags on their collar and a microchip or ear tattoo, and keep the information updated.3. Bake and share cupcakes. Take part in National Cupcake Day on Feb. 23 and help end animal cruelty one cupcake at a time. The money you raise baking and distributing cupcakes by donation will help the BC SPCA rescue, re-home and provide emergency services for injured and abandoned animals in B.C. Get involved by registering online at nationalcupcakeday.ca.4. The fi x is in. Help spread the word about the crucial importance of spaying or neutering pets – or make a donation to your local shelter to help with spay/neuter programs. Thousands of unwanted animals are born in B.C. each year – often with tragic consequences.5. Adopt, don’t shop. If you are considering getting a new pet make the SPCA or another animal shelter your fi rst adoption option. Avoid buying pets from online sites — you may be supporting puppy mills by buying this way.6. Make humane food choices. Commit to purchasing foods raised according to high standards of animal welfare. Look for SPCA Certifi ed products in the meat and dairy sections of your grocery store. You can fi nd out where to buy SPCA Certifi ed products at spcacertifi ed.ca.7. Sign up for the BC SPCA Kids Club. Connect the young animal lovers in your life with other like-minded youth through an annual BC SPCA Kids Club membership ($15).8. Make the Switch. Switch the toxic ethylene glycol antifreeze in your vehicle to pet-friendly, propylene-based antifreeze.9. Donate your time or money. Help a homeless or wild animal get the care they need. The BC SPCA’s priority funds let you choose which program or service to support, including cruelty investigations, sheltering, wildlife reha-bilitation, education and advocacy. Or give of yourself – the BC SPCA simply could not function without the help of our nearly 4,000 amazing volunteers across the province.10. Sign up! Sign up for the 2015 Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walk in your community this September and help us raise urgently needed funds for abused, homeless, neglected and injured animals.

Three years ago, I wrote a column about Tim Tebow, the Denver Bron-cos quarterback who used to kneel
publicly after every touchdown and hold his hand to his head as he offered a prayer of thanks. The practice was often called “Te-bowing.”
Back then, I wrote that I didn’t think God was really a football fan, or that God controls the outcome of any game. “Frank-ly,” I wrote, “I don’t think God cares.”
That column caused someone to write a letter to the editor and disagree with me. It seems that there are many who disagree with me. According to the Public Reli-gion Research Institute and Religion News Service, 25 per cent of Americans believe God actually does decide who will win the Super Bowl. The same poll found that over 50 per cent of Americans believe that God rewards faithful athletes with success in sporting events.
Some athletes believe the same thing. The recent semi–final game saw the Seattle Seahawks engineer an amazing overtime comeback against the Green Bay Packers. Seahawk quarterback Russell Wilson threw an astonishing four interceptions. It seemed almost certain that the Packers would win, foiling the Seahawks’ attempt to repeat as Super Bowl champs. But they didn’t.
After the game, Wilson claimed that God caused both the four interceptions and the spectacular reversal: “That’s God setting it up, to make it dramatic, so re-warding, so special.”
Now a skeptic might ask, “What would Wilson have said if the Seahawks had lost? Would he have seen his four intercepted passes as the result of God’s will or divine displeasure rather than his own mediocre passing? Would he have blamed God for the loss?”
Athletes, of course, are noticeably silent
about God’s will when their team is defeat-ed. Then they have to show patience with the trials and tribulations of life, but that doesn’t make news or a good testimony on the popular Christianity circuit even though such endurance may reflect a deeper faith than the praises of the fortu-nate.
Now I don’t expect Russell Wilson, Tim Tebow, or other athletes to be sophisticat-
ed theologians. Wilson is a fine young man who has used his celebrity status to help others. His relationship with Jesus has made a dif-ference in his life, and I de-light in that.
But there’s a problem with this kind of thinking. To think that winning is the result of God’s favour also means that losing is a sign of God’s dis-pleasure. If God really plays favourites in this way, then the losers in the game of life, whether on the field or off, are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t.” Their skills and commitment make little differ-ence if God has already determined the outcome.
Secondly, does God really choose fa-vourites in this way? I don’t think so. I would say that God loves all people, re-gardless of which team they play for, re-gardless of which nation they live in, re-gardless of which way they practice their own faith.
Thirdly, I don’t think that when we be-lieve in God, we also need to assert that divine providence determines everything from sporting contests to car accidents, cancer, and business success.
The book of Job in the Bible explored this theme over 2,500 years ago. Does God reward the faithful and punish the unrigh-teous? Job is a righteous man, but every-thing falls apart in his life, He loses his children, wealth, social standing, and health. He finally comes to the conclusion that being faithful does not necessarily
mean success in life. Nor can Job believe that God unilaterally determines our desti-nies, for good or ill.
The story helps us understand, I think, that we live in a wild and amazing universe which contains pockets of chaos. The events of our lives are usually the result of the interplay of many events, including di-vine providence (that is, God’s decisions or vision), human freedom, genetic and me-teorological factors beyond our control, and sheer randomness.
Sometimes an amazing catch is not an “immaculate reception” ordained by God; it may be just skill, or dumb luck, or a ball tipped into the hands of a skilled player nearby. Sometimes a wonderful comeback is not determined by God deciding to make it more dramatic, but by the amazing skill of these athletes.
I am sure that God was there — but not as a miracle worker or team mascot. God was there urging the players to achieve their best as team members, to be sports-manlike, and to remain healthy amid a rough and tumble game. I suspect God was indifferent to the ultimate outcome.
Perhaps Aaron Rodgers, the Packer quarterback, who is also a Christian, was closer to the truth when he responded to a question about whether his faith was shak-en at his team’s loss. “I don’t think God cares a whole lot about the outcome. He cares about the people involved, but I don’t think He’s a big football fan.”
To that, I can only say “Amen”.I’m going to be cheering for the Sea-
hawks (since the Broncos aren’t playing). But at the end of the day, I’ll be at peace regardless of the result. There are so many more important things than the Super Bowl that God actually does care about — feeding the hungry, giving comfort to the vulnerable, remaining faithful and open–hearted as we endure the realities of pain, sickness and defeat.

Built by the Methodist congregation and opened in early 1906, the
first Cranbrook Gymnasium and Recreation Club building proved immediately popular with the young men of the com-munity, young men for whom the Methodists wished to pro-vide an alternative to the “dark-er” side of life easily found with-in the community.
It was a substantial build-ing, constructed immediately behind the small Methodist Church on the northeast cor-ner of 8th Avenue and 1st Street. Within a few years, how-ever, it became apparent that the facility was lacking some-thing, something which the Methodists decreed to be none other than a swimming pool.
With the Gyro outdoor swimming pool some 20 years in the future there was, for those of an aquatic persuasion, nothing to be done in the cold months of the year.
So saying, Reverend W.E. Dunham, in October 1911, laid public the plans for a newer, bigger and better gymnasium and recreation club by way of the addition of a large indoor swimming pool.
The necessary funding ap-peared in short order, with construction slated to begin in November despite fears of frosts preventing connection to the city sewer lines.
Still, as is often the case, time slipped by and it was not until March 1912, that local ar-chitect F.S. Rosseter unveiled plans for the new structure. Erected immediately to the rear of the earlier gymnasium, the building was to feature two storeys upon a full basement (which the first building lacked), and both a larger gym and reading room. Plans changed somewhat in the en-suing months with, at first, a decision to move the original gym across the street before adding to it and then, by Sep-tember 1912, to abandon the first building completely and construct the second gymnasi-um and recreation building di-rectly across the street on an empty lot on the southwest corner of 8th Avenue and 1st Street.
The contract was awarded to local builders Baker & Ban-field in October and prepara-tion began soon after with the excavation of the lot. It all went well with the exception of W.E. Worden’s team of horses, while

clearing the ground, becoming temporarily (it is hoped) lost in a cesspool present on the prop-erty, which undoubtedly says something for the state of the city’s sewage system at the time.
By late November, aided by mild weather, the concrete foundation was nearly com-plete.
The building officially opened on March 21, 1913. The large, wooden, rectangular structure may have been lack-ing in elegance — it was, in fact, little more than a very large, rectangular box (thus predating the majority of Cran-brook commercial construc-tion for decades to come) — but its mere existence made up for any cosmetic shortfalls.
Measuring 30 by 80 feet and standing nearly two-and-a-half storeys tall (the base-ment was situated partially above ground level), it met with general public approval. General entrance was achieved via a broad staircase leading to a first floor verandah, onwards to a 16 by 20 foot entrance hall and then to the gymnasium it-self. The gym measured 30 by 60 feet with a 16-and-a-half foot ceiling surrounded by 10-foot wainscoting and 12 win-dows. A 20 by 29 foot room di-rectly over the entrance hall
constituted the combination reading room/spectators gal-lery, closed off from the gym by sliding windows.
Basement stairs and a cor-ridor led to the swimming pool, hereafter referred to as a “tank,” according to the custom of the day. The solid cement, 20 by 40 foot tank, ranging from three to seven feet deep, was situated towards one corner of the tank room with a locker room, a dressing room, a fur-nace room, lavatories and “shower baths” in conjunction. It was proudly declared that the swimming tank was larger than those of the Spokane and Vancouver YMCAs of the time.
A coal-fired furnace provid-ed steam to maintain the water at 75F (24C) throughout the year. The gym was soon sup-plied with gymnastic, basket-ball, handball, indoor baseball and tennis equipment.
Notably, the Methodists de-creed the building open to men of all religions, a depar-ture from the majority of the local clubs and lodges of the day. Further, it was decided to form a Ladies Auxiliary to the also newly formed “Young Men’s Club” that would see to the needs of the ladies who were allowed to utilize the building every Monday after-noon and Thursday evening.
The Young Men’s Club did well over the next few years despite the gaps left by the young men going to war but, by the mid-1920s, things were not going as well. Social and enter-tainment functions in the gym helped to keep it afloat but it appears athletes of the town gradually took to pursuits else-where. By 1926, plans were afoot for the building to be-come home to the Great War Veterans Association (the pres-ent day Royal Canadian Le-gion) but fell through when the vets constructed their own building on Baker Street the following year.
The old gym maintained an occasional presence within the athletic scene into the 1930s, but was gradually converted to apartments on the upper levels and joined by Stewart’s Auto Wreckers in the basement.
A fire in 1954 did consider-able damage but the old build-ing lingered, little more than a vacant eyesore until it was ren-ovated in the 1960s and used once again as a commercial/residential property.
It was demolished a num-ber of years ago and the site is now a parking lot containing no hint of Cranbrook’s first in-door swimming pool.

The 2014-15 WHL campaign has been an up-and-down affair for the Kootenay Ice. With a seven-game homestand on the horizon, the hope is the comforts of home cooking and familiar beds will help the team establish some consis-tency heading down the stretch.
“If we take care of ourselves off the ice, we should be fine physically and mentally,” said Koo-tenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill Thursday afternoon. “We know how much the last part of the season means to get yourself ready and in the right frame of mind for playoffs.
“Anytime you’re at home and you’re in your own bed in your com-fortable surroundings, it’s a bonus. It should be a little bit of an advan-tage.”
Following a 6-3 road loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes, the low-est-ranked team not only in the Central Division but also the entire WHL, the Kootenay Ice re-
turned to Cranbrook and took Thursday away from practice in hopes of resting up with 22 games remaining on the slate.
Wednesday’s loss to Lethbridge represents the third defeat to a WHL team out of the playoff race so far in the month of January for the Ice. Earlier in January, the Ice dropped a pair of games to the Saskatoon Blades (6-4 Jan. 10 and 3-2 Jan. 17), another team out of the WHL post-season picture, allowing a total of six points to slip through their grasps with the WHL playoff
race heating up.“We, as a coaching
staff take full responsi-bility in the preparation of our athletes whether it’s a first-place team or a last-place team [we are playing],” McGill said. “After that, it’s all about the commitment to exe-cution and the ability to do it the right way re-gardless of who you’re playing.”
For the McGill and the Ice, the next oppo-nent on the card comes in the form of the Regina Pats.
The last time the two teams met, Wyatt Hoflin
was perfect as he stopped 34 shots to pro-pel the Ice to a 1-0 victo-ry Oct. 17.
Since then, the Pats have undergone a sub-tle makeover, shipping out the likes of Connor Gay, Kyle Burroughs, Dryden Hunt, Morgan Klimchuk and Brady Reagan. Despite the turnover of staff in Regi-na, McGill knows not to underestimate the sec-ond-place team in the WHL’s East Division.
“They’re extremely hard-working, their goaltending is excel-lent,” McGill said.
“They’ve made a lot of changes but, at the same time, the foundation for their team is still the same. Their forwards play hard. They’re a very simple team. They put pucks behind you. They’re very versatile.”
While the Pats repre-sent the first challenge on the seven-game homestand, Saturday’s test might prove to hold more weight in terms of determining what the Kootenay Ice are capable of as the WHL-leading Kelowna Rockets visit Western Financial Place.
“You don’t want to
get ahead of yourself be-cause we have an East-ern Conference match-up first,” McGill said. “But, as far as the Kelow-na Rockets go, they’re obviously the best team in the league for a rea-son. They’ve got the complete package.
“When you have only eight losses, you know you’re a consistent hockey team that proba-bly uses all four lines and does a good job de-fensively. We’re going to have our hands full, for sure. But, in saying that, it’s a good test for us to see how long we can
mentally provide our-selves with a strong commitment to staying in the program.”
The Rockets roll into Cranbrook in the midst of a four-game road trip, having edged the Red Deer Rebels in overtime Jan. 27 before falling to the Edmonton Oil Kings in overtime Wednesday night.
On top of Saturday’s top-billed Kelowna Rockets, Western Finan-cial Place will also be privy to the antics of the renowned Green Men, of Vancouver Canucks fandom fame.
Critical Creston Valley clashKimberley Dynamiters visit Thunder Cats with vital points on the line
Taylor rocc aSports Editor
The Kimberley Dyna-miters are set to travel to Creston Valley in search of two vital points Friday.
The Dynamiters and Thunder Cats are en-gaged in a neck-and-neck race for sec-ond-place in the KIJHL’s Eddie Mountain Divi-sion. With seven games remaining on their schedule, the Nitros hold a two-point edge on the Thunder Cats, who have eight games remaining and one in hand on the Dynamiters.
The two teams very well could end up as first-round playoff oppo-nents and Friday might prove to be a nice pre-view of what to expect.
“It’s going to be a very
intense game,” said Dy-namiters head coach Jerry Bancks. “Like I’ve said since Christmas, I think they’ve been one of the strong teams. They’ve played extreme-ly well. They’re well coached. It’s going to be a very competitive game and they’re as desperate to get home ice as we are. It should be very much a playoff-type at-mosphere. We’re looking forward to it.”
The divisional playoff format in the KIJHL sees the first-place finisher host the fourth-place team in the first round of post-season action. The second-place team then hosts the third-place team. As it stands, the Nitros hold down sec-ond place in the Eddie
Mountain Division, with the Thunder Cats hot on their heels in third.
A six-point gap sepa-rates the fourth-place Golden Rockets from the Thunder Cats and on the other side of the ladder, a 12-point gap exists be-tween the second-place Dynamiters and first-place Ghostriders.
If the playoffs began today, the Ghostriders would face the Rockets and the Nitros would take on the Thunder Cats in the KIJHL’s first round of playoff hockey.
“We need to have solid effort from every-body fortunate enough to get in the lineup,” Bancks said looking for-ward to Friday. “That’s pretty much it.”
A once depleted Dy-namiters dressing room is now brimming with healthy bodies. Bancks expects Jared Marchi to make his return to action Friday in Creston Valley, leaving Marco Campan-ella (lower body, week to week) as the lone re-maining man on the in-jured list.

ST. LOUIS - Martin Brodeur is moving from the crease to the front office.
The St. Louis Blues goaltender announced his retirement Thursday at a news conference at Scottrade Center.
The 42-year-old Montreal native will re-main with the organiza-tion as a senior adviser to general manager Doug Armstrong.
“I had a blast for the month and a half that I was here,” Brodeur said. “They really took me into their family, and for me that meant a lot.”
The 10-time all-star and four-time Vezina Trophy winner finished his career with St. Louis after a two-decade run with New Jersey.
Brodeur holds sever-al NHL records, includ-ing most regular-season
wins (691), most playoff starts (204) and most playoff shutouts (24).
He won three Stanley Cups with the Devils and was a two-time Olympic gold medallist with Team Canada in
2002 and 2010.Brodeur signed with
St. Louis as a free agent on Dec. 2 as the Blues looked to shore up their goaltending while Brian Elliott recovered from a knee injury.
He was 3-3 with a 2.87 goals-against aver-age with the Blues, and in his final victory be-came the fifth-oldest goalie to post a shutout in a 3-0 win over Colora-do on Dec. 29.
Brodeur dropped to third on the Blues’ goal-tending depth chart after Elliott returned, with 24-year-old Jake Allen sharing the position.
Brodeur said while the Blues wanted him to
stay, he started to feel “in the way” as a third goalie.
“I think everybody has to understand there were no promises from the organization to-wards me,” Brodeur
said. “They have two solid goaltenders, so for me to come in and help them out was a great op-portunity for me to get back into the game and see if I still like it and see if I can still play.”
Brodeur officially retires; joins Blues as senior adviser

The NHL’s feeder league will undergo a sizable westward shift, designed to bring five farm teams closer to their parent clubs.
The American Hock-ey League announced Thursday the creation of a Pacific Division for next season, the product of nearly three years of discussions with the NHL. Anaheim (San Diego), Calgary (Stock-ton), Edmonton (Ba-kersfield), Los Angeles (Ontario) and San Jose (San Jose) will each move their primary minor league affiliate to the California cities this summer.
Ducks prospects have been assigned to the Norfolk Admirals in Vir-ginia. The Adirondack Flames have been play-ing in Glens Falls, New York. The Oilers have been tied to the Oklaho-ma City Barons. The Kings have been with the Manchester Monarchs in New Hampshire. The Worcester Sharks have been playing in Massa-chusetts.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’ll wake up with a smile and wear it throughout the day. You could discover that a very combative friend seems to be demanding changes in areas that you would prefer stay the same. Explaining the wisdom of your ways might be important. Tonight: Be spontaneous. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You rarely exaggerate, yet your words will have a loud, extrav-agant quality to them. A friend at a distance could be far more provocative than you originally had thought. You might have second thoughts about inviting this person into your life. To-night: Join friends for TGIF! GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Before you act, you might need to evaluate your thoughts and needs. Make yourself aware of the financial implications of a potential change. Talk to some-one who understands your situ-ation and has more knowledge than you on the subject at hand. Tonight: Say “yes.”
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You tend to go to extremes emotionally and financially. Be sure you can handle the impli-cations of pursuing a dream be-fore you take off. A friend might encourage you to take a hard look at what you are about to do. Tonight: Have an important discussion. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You might feel the need for more privacy. Schedule time with a friend or loved one whom you enjoy and can share your feelings with. Be willing to shuf-fle your schedule around in or-der to suit your mood. You could be surprised by what happens. Tonight: Play it low-key. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Friends surround you. Even someone whom you view as an acquaintance could indicate that you are a friend to him or her. Wherever you go, invitations head your way. Do your best to get into weekend mode. Others seem to await your response. Tonight: Where the gang is. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might want to switch gears
and adapt to a situation involv-ing your personal life. You are likely to have a lot of energy when completing certain tasks by a certain time. Lighten up, and know which direction you are heading in. Tonight: Out with your pals. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Tap into your imagination and distance yourself while seeking a solution to a difficult situation. You could be surprised by what becomes evident as a result. Avoid repeating yourself in a conversation with a loved one or family member. Tonight: Go for a change of pace! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Be more forthright in your choices. You know what you want. At a certain point, you must act. You will feel better when you have committed to a path. Use caution with a Scorpio today; this person has a way of affecting you. Tonight: Love the one you’re with. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might decide to move for-ward with a project that has been on the back burner. A part-
ner could share a lot with you to encourage you to move on this matter. Communication could be powerful if you remain open. Tonight: Say “yes” to an offer that is irresistible. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You could be on top of what you are doing if you would relax and go with the flow of the moment. At this point, structuring plans might be futile, as there is a strong likelihood you will need to change them anyway. A loved one is lucky for you. Tonight: Around good music. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’ll feel very cared about as a loved one demonstrates his or her feelings. You could find yourself in an unusual, creative situation. Right now, you need to follow your instincts. Your deep feelings are right-on. To-night: Let your imagination rock and roll. BORN TODAY Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney (1941), actor Chris-tian Bale (1974), former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882)
Dear Annie: Over the holidays, I stayed at my cousin’s home. My cousin has two chil-dren, a daughter and a son. The son is 14 years old. I noticed that the boy’s grandmother slept with him in the same bed. I think she has a weird obsession with the boy. She is constantly touching him and rubbing his back. She always has to sit next to him. She pays very little attention to the younger granddaughter. Worse, the granddaughter told me that her mother also sometimes sleeps with her brother (instead of her dad). I think it is extremely odd for these wom-en to be sleeping with this young man, who also still sleeps with his baby blanket. Isn’t he too old for this? What is wrong with these women? Should I say some-thing? -- More Than a Little Grossed Out Dear More: Yes. We are surprised that a 14-year-old boy wouldn’t object more to the sleeping arrangements, and we sus-pect he will put a stop to it soon. If the mother and grandmother are doing this over the boy’s objections, however, that is completely inappropriate and potentially abusive. You could ask your cousin about this, saying you find it odd and possibly damaging. You also could mention it to the father, suggesting he step up and protect his son. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Help,” whose husband naps when he gets home and then is up half the night. She seems to think everyone can handle regular night-time hours. If I slept every night from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., I would be more tired as the week went on, because my body wakes me up multiple times at night. When I don’t set an alarm, I sometimes don’t wake up un-til 10 hours after I went to bed. If I get up after eight hours, I often need a nap later because I did not get enough actual sleep. While I agree that seeing a doctor might be helpful, his wife can also suggest that he stay up all night one time and then try to sleep from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. He might be able to manage that. -- John Dear John: Why are you getting up so much at night? To use the bathroom? Be-cause something (snoring, apnea, dry-ness, light, noise) is waking you up? While we understand that not everyone has a “normal” nighttime sleep cycle, a suffi-cient amount of sleep is important to your health. If the problem is snoring, dry mouth, excessive urination or apnea, please see a doctor to find out whether there is any effective treatment for you. But also check your bedroom to make sure there isn’t a lot of light or noise, or electronic gadgets that glow or vibrate. This, too, can interfere with restful, restorative sleep. Dear Annie: I am responding to “Actively Confused,” whose wife battled cancer and now resents his activities. I am a lung cancer survivor. My wife took care of me for the better part of 18 months, showering me and feeding me through a tube. She also worked full time outside the home. At the time, I didn’t much care what she wanted to do. As I progressed, I realized she needed to get out of the house and do things for herself, even though it meant going with-out me. That was fine. As my mobility im-proved, I would do things with her even if those weren’t my favorite things. We both knew that I needed to be more active, or I’d just waste away on the couch. It takes a long time to get your stamina back, and I still haven’t after four years. Together, my wife and I are getting through this, and we both realize that nei-ther one of us is what we used to be. With her, our children and good doctors, nurs-es, therapists and prayers, I am still here to try. -- Less Active, Not Confused Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime ed-itors of the Ann Landers column. SIDHARTHA BANERJEECanadian Press
MONTREAL - A lot can happen in seven seconds. Just ask the Que-bec man who says that brief period cost him $13.5 million.
Joel Ifergan bought two lottery tickets in May 2008 - but the one with the eventual winning combi-nation popped out of the terminal seven seconds after the 9 p.m. deadline.
As Ifergan discovered the next day, his Super 7 ticket had all the right numbers but was actually dated for the following week.
A delay in Loto-Quebec’s com-puter system caused a lag in the is-suing of the ticket for that night’s $27-million jackpot, which was ul-timately awarded to another per-son.
Ifergan argued the delay cost him dearly and that he should be entitled to one-half of the windfall - but the Supreme Court disagreed.
On Thursday, the country’s highest court ruled it wouldn’t hear his case against Loto-Quebec, ef-fectively ending Ifergan’s $100,000 legal battle. He’d already lost in
Quebec Superior Court in 2012 and in the Quebec Court of Appeal in 2014.
“My crusade is up, I’ve done all I can, I spent enough money going to the Supreme Court,” Ifergan said in a telephone interview.
“If they decide that the Crown corporations are above contract laws and the Consumer Protection Act, well then good luck to us. I’m extremely disappointed but I think what’s more important is the Cana-dian people should be worried.”
As the 9 p.m. deadline loomed
on May 23, 2008, Ifergan made the purchase: the first ticket came in before the deadline but the ticket with the fateful numbers burped out seven seconds after the cut-off.
Ifergan alleged the transaction was concluded on time and that both tickets were in the system at 8:59:47. What cost him, he says, is the 10 seconds it takes for a ticket to emerge.
“The contract was crystallized at 8:59 p.m.,” he said. “How they pro-cess their thing, that’s their prob-lem, not me, and I end up being
penalized.”Ifergan says the Quebec lottery
board works differently from its provincial counterparts.
“In the rest of Canada, they shut down at 9 p.m. and you can’t buy a ticket,” he said. “But everything in their system prior to 9 p.m. gets processed and you get a ticket, even if it comes out five minutes later.”
The owner informed Ifergan the second ticket was for the following week and asked if he wanted to keep it. He replied in the affirma-tive.
Quebec man missed lottery jackpot by 7 seconds
