Indoors or out, Kimberley loves a party. The annual Turkey Run Off last weekend saw 50 racers out to enjoy a gorgeous winter day with fresh snow on the trails. The bonfire kept everyone warm, and the hot dogs and hot chocolate were enjoyed by all. Proceeds from the race will be donated to the Friends of Lois Creek to go toward maintenance of the trail system.

Dec. 30, 2014, Revelstoke, BC: The fore-casters at Avalanche Canada have extend-ed the special public avalanche warning first issued on Christmas Day. Like the ex-isting warning, this updated warning ap-plies to the North Rockies, Cariboos, North Columbia, South Columbia, Koote-nay-Boundary, Purcells, South Rockies, Lizard and Flathead, and South Coast In-land regions, and has been extended to include the Sea-to-Sky region near Whis-tler and Pemberton. This warning applies to recreational backcountry users and is in effect until Sunday, January 4.

“We had expected the problem layer to calm down by now but it’s still easily trig-gered,” said Senior Avalanche Forecaster James Floyer. “We have had numerous re-ports of skiers and snowmobilers involved in avalanches. Luckily there have been no fatalities, thanks to good self-rescue by the parties involved.”

Avalanche Canada recommends back-country users stay on simple, low-angle terrain; avoid large, steep slopes; mini-mize exposure to overhead hazard; avoid travelling where other users are on slopes above; and re-group in safe zones away from avalanche run-outs until conditions improve. If you do not have the training or experience to assess avalanche terrain and local conditions, it’s a good idea to recre-ate in areas where the avalanche risk is professionally managed.

All backcountry users must be equipped with essential avalanche safety equipment. Everyone in the party needs an avalanche transceiver, a probe and a shovel every day. It’s equally important that everyone has avalanche training and has practiced using this equipment. If an avalanche occurs, the rescue is up to you. There is no time to go for help.

What do you say when a com-munity picks you up and carries you on its shoulders as you fight cancer? The only thing Chris Weitzel and wife Laurie can say is thank you from the bottom of their hearts to the good people of this area.

“We want to thank the com-munities of Kimberley and Cran-brook for pulling together and supporting us financially and spiritually,” Chris said.

“The community has been ab-solutely amazing,” Laurie added. “You think you can’t get through

another day, but thanks to the community, you can.”

Chris Weitzel has been bat-tling esophageal cancer. At one point he was down to 122 pounds and close to bedridden. After going the traditional route with treatment, he opted for holistic treatment in Mexico and he is feeling better, having gained some weight back.

“The treatment seems to be working,” he said. “It’s a low dose of chemo, but 95 per cent holistic. It keeps your body supported.”

The Mexican treatment is not without significant cost and Kim-berley and Cranbrook residents played a big role in allowing the

Weitzels to travel there for treat-ment. There have been two large fundraisers and many smaller ones, raising over $18,000.

But it’s not just money. It’s many, many small acts of kind-ness.

“All our yard work is being done, our firewood split,” Chris said. “People are making us food.”

“At one point Chris couldn’t swallow,” Laurie said. “People were making him homemade or-ganic soups. Everyone stepped right up, it didn’t matter what it was.”

“I got up one day and people were weeding my garden,” Chris said. “I didn’t even know who

some of them were. Every time something happened, someone stepped up. It’s tough to thank everyone so we just want to do the best we can by letting every-one know how fantastic our little communities really are.”

Weitzel will be returning to Mexico for a follow up in the New Year. He truly believes the treat-ment he received there made the difference for him and he and Laurie are willing to share that part of their story with anyone who may have more questions about it. It is not a building that draws atten-tion, it never real-

ly has. It was not a par-ticularly fancy building when it was built — al-though it did have its charm — and it is a less fancy building now. It is, in truth, strictly utili-tarian and, while it has certainly fulfilled the vi-sion of those who creat-ed it and will likely do so for many years to come, it is probable that its one-hundredth birth-day will go as unnoticed as many of its fancier neighbours. It is the An-

two of which were found over tobacco shops on Baker Street. They were all adequate for their purpose but construction of the Par-ish Hall created a space larger than most, with a kitchen and a stage all readily available to the general public.

It was a fine hall for the day, constructed behind the former An-glican Rectory on the southeast corner of 13th Avenue and 2nd Street, running parallel to the alley across two and a half lots. The hall itself, measuring 50 x 30 feet, was created not only for church func-tions, but for concerts, plays, socials, gymnas-tics, meetings and any other such uses as con-ceived by renters. The front portion consisted of an entrance foyer, 7 x 12 feet, and a kitchen, 7 x 18 feet. The kitchen contained a stove, hot and cold water, a sink, a cupboard and shelves. At the opposite end of the hall was a 14 x 30 foot stage behind which were two dress-ing rooms, 7 x 10 feet, each connected to a complete lavatory (it had a toilet). Under a separate roof by the kitchen was the ladies’ parlour, 22 x 25 feet, which was heated by a stove and created for the use of the Anglican Church Ladies Guild and other groups wish-

ing to meet in smaller quarters.

The hall was well ventilated and heated by an up-to-date hot air furnace. The windows were small and almost square with sin-gle-pane, flaked flint glass allowing a sub-dued light year-round. Aside from the main entrance, a door lead-ing into the parlour and thence into the street, a door on the stage lead-ing to the rectory lawn and a side door half way up the hall leading into the lane all sup-plied egress in the event of a fire.

The flooring was of maple and the walls were wainscoted in a stained moss-green wood to a height of about four feet six inch-es, with sand-finished plastered walls above. The entire building was lit by electric lights with special attention paid to the stage area. The structure itself was shingled and rested on a concrete platform, all at a cost of $3,000.00, a tidy sum for the day.

The Parish Hall offi-cially opened to a large crowd on the afternoon of December 16, 1915, with just the right touch of pomp and circum-stance. To quote from a Cranbrook Herald ac-count of the day, “The Rector opened with a prayer [expressing] the gratitude of the Church

at large for the splendid work done by every section of the congre-gation and for the help rendered by friends in other denominations…Mr. C. A. Cock followed the Rector and gave a sketch of the history of the English Church in Cranbrook, expressing his gratification at the erection of the new building. The Venera-ble Archdeacon Beer spoke of the rapid growth of English Church…and of its good fortune” and ended by cautioning the parish to “cut your cloth according to your pocket and don’t set out to complete against other churches.” The names of those who contributed to the con-struction of the hall in-clude many still known in the community: Green, Roberts, Ward, Parker, Webb and many others. There followed a community bazaar, some theatrical vi-gnettes and a dance that went into the early hours of the morning. The hall has remained in constant use ever since.

In November, 2003, the 1813 Lord Strathco-na Army Cadet Corps took possession of the building for their own use. The former Parish Hall is now known as Kennedy Hall, named for four members of the Kennedy family whose combined military ser-vice covers over a cen-tury.

If the original hall had a modicum of charm it must be said that the present day building falls some-what short of that par-ticular mark. Numer-ous cosmetic changes over the years have left us with little but mem-ories of the original structure.

Still, it is not only the large and visually im-pressive that forms the history of a town and its people, but, perhaps even more so, those things on a much less grand scale, those small, plain places that are there for all to use, for all to enjoy. Such places as the Anglican Parish Hall, built in 1915, and used contin-uously by generations of Cranbrook citizens, truly form the heart of a city.

The Anglican Church Parish Hallglican Christ Church Parish Hall and it has played a humble host to thousands of Cran-brook citizens as they gathered together to celebrate life, death, wins, losses, love, hope and all things in be-tween. It is one of the oldest in Cranbrook and one of the last of its breed: a community hall.

As one of the few buildings of any note to be constructed in the city during the First World War, the fact that it was built at all is a testimony to the mem-bers of the Anglican congregation: money was tight, materials ra-tioned or restricted and labour difficult to find, but, in early November, 1915, local contractor Robert Dixon took on the job and had the place up and ready be-fore Christmas. There were, of course, other halls in town at the time: the Masonic Tem-ple (now the Studio),

Fraternity Hall (later the Knights of Pythias Hall), Carmen’s Hall,

Mighton’s Hall and the Royal Black Knights of Ireland Hall, the latter

The running part wasn’t Nikita’s Dalke’s forte for the biathlon, but it’s a different story when she’s got a rifle in her hands.

On the final episode of Extreme Huntress, Dalke and the rest of her competitors competed in the final challenge as part of the Extreme Huntress competi-tion—a biathlon.

Each of the ladies had to run a mile, stop-ping at two different points to shoot targets with a .22 calibre rifle, with a long-distance 200-yard shot at the end with a .270 calibre rifle.

Dalke, of course, blew the 200-yard target away on her first shot, as it shattered when she hit the tannerite—an explo-sive—that was in the centre circle of the tar-get. She cleaned up in the long-distance shoot-ing challenge in an earli-er episode, collecting the maximum amount of points due to her pin-point accuracy.

However, she wasn’t quite as successful with the .22 over the course of the biathlon, using open sights on small targets at a much closer distance.

Working the gun it-self was also a challenge, according to Dalke.

“The .22 they gave us kept jamming, they wouldn’t load, then they’d jam…so that was disappointing,” said Dalke. “The long range shot was good because we got to use the rifle.”

Shooting with the .22 wasn’t the only chal-lenge for Dalke, as she had to be mindful of her asthma while running the biathlon.

“Up here, where the climate is a lot drier, I have more control over my asthma, but I was not ready for that when I was down there, because it was so humid,” Dalke said. “We had rain the night before and the day before and then it was the hottest day we had that whole week.

A reflection of the growth of business and other activity in the Kimberley district is seen in the announce-ment by The Royal Bank of Canada of its intention to open a branch in Kimberley. The office will be tem-porarily located on Wallinger Avenue next to the new post Office. Later on, it is planned to move into more commodious quarters elsewhere, and an an-nouncement concern-ing this will be made in due course.

The new branch is expected to open for business on Tuesday, January 3. Manager of the Royal Bank’s new Kimberley Branch will be Mr. Leo S. Fowler who is coming from Calgary to pen the of-fice. Mr. Fowler is a banker of wide experi-ence, having been as-sociated with a num-ber of the bank’s im-portant branches, both in Calgary and else-where in the west. For the past four years he has been a member of the Supervisor’s De-partment in Calgary. Mr. Fowler is keenly in-terested in sport and community activities.

This latest link in the Royal bank’s chain of over 850 branches throughout Canada and abroad will bring to residents of Kimber-ley and the surround-ing district the facilities of Canada’s largest bank. Founded in 1869, the bank’s phenome-nal growth has been truly a romance of Ca-nadian progress. Today its total assets exceed three billion dollars, placing it in the fore-front of Canadian banks and amongst the largest financial insti-tutions in the world.

Morrison, of Strath-more branch, formerly of Cranbrook, who will be the accountant. Mr. Morrison has banking experience in Scotland before joining the Royal. Chief teller will be Angus Petrie of the Cranbrook branch and a second teller is yet to be named. Stenogra-pher and junior clerk will be Kathy Moore.

PooLeH. W. Poole will be-

come Superintendent of the Sullivan Concen-trator, Kimberley, on January 1, 1956, ac-cording to an an-nouncement made today by W. G. Jewitt, Assistant General Man-ager and Manager of Mines of the Consoli-dated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. In his new position, Mr. Poole will assume part of the duties previously carried out by A. G. Robertson who, as Cominco’s Superinten-dent of Concentration, continues to have over-all responsibility for all of the Company’s mills and concentrators.

Mr. Poole was born in Essex, England. Fol-lowing service in World War I he studied metal-lurgical Engineering at the University of Brit-ish Columbia. He joined Cominco as an assayer at the Sullivan Mine in 1920. Three years later he was transferred to the Sulli-van Concentrator.

In his work at this operation Mr. Poole has served as flotation engineer, metallurgist, assistant superinten-dent and operating su-perintendent, the ap-pointment which he received in 1950. In 1947, Mr. Poole spent nine months in Austra-lia as a consultant.

Mr. Poole is a mem-ber of the Professional Engineers of B.C. and the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metal-lurgy. During World War II he was O.C. of the 78th Coy., P.C.M.R. Mr. Poole has also been active in community organizations.

Dalke takes on biathlon

Sweden’s Erika Berg-mark won the biathlon challenge, coming in at a time of 6:52, based on the time of her run and time deduction based on her accuracy. Dalke came in fifth at 12:43.

After challenges such as responding to an-ti-hunting abuse, accu-racy shooting and react-ing to dangerous game, the points were all tallied up.

Dalke finished in sec-ond place at 401 points, with Bergmark at the top with 511.

All 13 episodes were filmed over six days at the 777 Ranch in Hondo, Texas in the summer.

“It was interesting,” said Dalke. “It was a good experience. It defi-

nitely showed me a lot because I went down thinking I was going to be in over my head, be-cause reading each of the profiles of each girl online is a little intimi-dating.

“But once you’re all together, I actually felt like I was right in my ele-ment here. It gave me a good confidence boost.”

For me and others, the past year seems to have been darker than usual. All I have to do is list some of the events

that have taken place: shootings in schools in Pakistan, the U.S. and Canada; the crisis in the Ukraine; the sheer, unmitigated hor-ror of ISIS; shootings in Ferguson and New York and in the Parliament buildings in Ottawa; the number of deaths caused by ebola and the fear that dread disease strikes in the hearts of people who live thousands of miles away; the rise of child poverty in the wealthi-est nations, including Canada; the increas-ing homelessness of so many, including right here in Cranbrook. It has been a tough year.

One of the promises of Christmas is that we celebrate the birth of one who is called “Prince of Peace.” To be honest, some days I wonder if peace will ever be more than just a possibility in our world. This world seems hell–bent on self–destruction. Peo-ple seem to find greater delight in waging war than in working for peace. The rich are not about to give up their privilege, but seem more and more intent on hoarding their wealth. The gap between rich and poor is increasing exponentially, and there are no signs that it will slow down.

I could go on and on. It is a litany that seemingly has no end. It might almost be enough to make a person give up.

But I don’t. While it is true that I have struggled with depression in the past, I re-main generally a hopeful person. I seek to find signs of hope in the world, and in my life. I look for signs of people working to-gether to make the world a better place.

I do that, because usually I see the glass as half–full rather than half–empty. But I also do this for a more important reason — which is that I believe this is exactly the way God works in this world.

If we claim to follow the Prince of Peace, then God will call us to be peacemakers.

If we claim to follow the one who came to give life in all its abundance, then God will call us to ensure that all people share in that abun-dance.

If we claim to follow the one who is the light of the

world, then God will call us to be people of light rather than the darkness.

If we claim to follow the one who was born among the poor and vulnerable ones in the world, the one who showed us that God’s goodness is meant for all people, then God will call us to work for an equal distribution of the world’s wealth for all people.

Since I believe this is how God works in the world, then I will look for signs of God’s presence in those people and movements in whom the gospel promises are being fulfilled. Here are some of those signs.

Queen Elizabeth reminded us in her Christmas address this year about the Christmas truce which happened quite spontaneously during World War 1. On Christmas Day, soldiers in different sectors climbed out of their trenches and crossed no–man’s–land to mingle with the enemy. They exchanged souvenirs and food, played soccer, arranged joint burial ser-vices for those who had died, and sang “Silent Night” together. For just a moment, peace broke out in the midst of war.

Last fall, we celebrated the 25th anni-versary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The news media covered that event quite wide-ly. However, we didn’t hear much about the weeks of peaceful protest organized by the citizens of Leipzig. They gathered on Monday nights at St. Nicholas Church, where Bach composed so many of his can-tatas. At first, there were only 1,000 or so people, but the movement quickly swelled to over 300,000 singing songs of hope and protest and justice, until their song shook the powers of their nation and changed the world.

Let me end with one more example. We hear regularly about the brutality of the Taliban as they repress women and chil-dren, and shoot those children who dare to go to school. One of the young women they shot in 2012 was named Malala Yousafzai. She refused to give up, even after having been shot. She has become a powerful voice which has captured the imagination of people all around the world.

Last month, she became the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize, sharing it with Kailash Satyarthi “for their struggle against the suppression of chil-dren and young people and for the right of all children to education.”

There are signs of light in the darkness of this world. Through those signs, God continues to work. We can be part of that light as well.

1900Baker Home … George Taylor has just

finished a fine tiled fireplace for the Baker home, with heavy oak mantle and French plate mirror.

1901The Whistles Blew ... All the whistles in

town were turned loose Monday night at 12 o’clock, and for a time pandemonium reigned. It was the signal for the passing of the old century and the arrival of the new.

1902Leltch’s Christmas Boots ... A. Leitch,

of the Cranbrook Lumber Company, re-ceived a Christmas present that was a sur-prise. While hunting in the territories last fall he had some trouble with his feet, and George Leason, of Calgary, who was one of the party, joked him considerably on his vanity that prompted him to wear boots too small for comfort. Christmas day Mr. Leitch received a pair large enough to take in the end of a saw log, and accompanying the gift was a long letter from Mr. Leason, commiserating with him on his sufferings from his feet and advising him to throw vanity to the winds and seek comfort in his declining years by wearing the boots sent. Mr. Leitch is having a shed built for the new boots as their extraordinary size makes it impossible to get them through any door in his house.

1903Church Offering … The offering at

Christ Church Christmas morning, which it is the custom to present to the rector, amounted to the sum of $35.

Rink Damaged … The heavy weight of snow on the roof of the rink caused a break down last week. As a consequence the opening of the place has been delayed, but it will be ready in a few days. The band will have charge this winter.

Neat Decorations … One of the neatest pieces of decorating down this year was at the market of P. Burns & Co. The shop had been painted white inside, and was hung with all kinds of meat, and decorated with coloured paper streamers and imitation roses. On the floor was green sawdust, the combination producing an effect both at-tractive and pleasing. The work was done by Manager Sterritt and Mr Netterfield, the cutter, and received all kinds of praise from the admiring public.

1907Enjoyed Christmas ... A merry crowd of

Cranbrook people spent Christmas day at Perry Creek. To say the least they surely had a pleasant day. Dinner was served when they arrived and all did justice to the good things prepared, consisting of roast goose, chicken, venison and all that go with it to make it good. After dinner the spacious dining room was cleared and dancing and cards and other amusements was indulged in till tea time, when all re-paired to the dining room and were again refreshed, after which Mr. John McDonald rendered a Scotch reading, which was en-joyed by all. By this time the drivers were heard to yell, “All aboard,” and the merry jingling of a four horse sleigh was driven up. The party singing, made their way home in the moonlight, wishing the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Burge, a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

1908Another Mill Starts Up … Next week, at

the latest, the Robinson-McKenzie Lum-ber Company, will have their saw mill, two miles southeast of Cranbrook, running full blast. Twenty teams of horses arrived from

the east this week to take up the work of hauling in the logs already cut in the bush and a big gang of men will be kept em-ployed all winter logging, and a full crew will be employed at the saw mill. The Rob-inson-McKenzie Lumber Company intend to keep the mill running constantly to well into the summer, as they have a good mar-ket for all the lumber they can manufac-ture.

Wonderful Service … With the excep-tion of last week, when the new dynamo was being put in, the electric lights in Cranbrook have only been shut off for five hours in the last two and a half years. This is phenomenal.

Fall on the Job … Dan Bremner, whilst working on the telephone line near Mayook last Thursday had the misfortune to fall from a telephone post twenty-two feet to the ground. In spite of being badly bruised and shaken up, Dan climbed the pole again and finished the work he was doing.

Brass Band … The Cranbrook Brass Band did a fine line of serenading in New Year’s Day. They played several tunes at Burns’ corner and then proceeded to the curling rink, where they played for some time. Some of the boys at the rink started a collection and a goodly sum found its way into the coffers of the band.

TORONTO - Zach Fucale will return to the Canadian net on Friday against Denmark after splitting the preliminary round games with team-mate Eric Comrie at the world junior hockey championship.

Comrie made 25 saves in Canada’s 5-3 victory over the United States Wednesday at Montreal’s Bell Centre. Both goaltenders have won two games apiece for the unbeaten hosts.

“It just shows how this staff has confidence in both of us and every-one on the team,” Fucale said after Thursday’s practice at Air Canada Centre. “It’s not a prob-lem. (Comrie) and I have been working hard and we just want to con-tribute.”

To an outsider, Cana-da appears to be rotating its two goalies. However, head coach Benoit Groulx said there’s a pro-

cess to his staff’s deci-sion on who plays.

“We sit down, the coaches, we talk with our hockey people,” he said. “When we sit down after each game and we discuss that matter, we all agreed on what we’ve got to do. For us, we’re very comfortable with both goalies.

“No tough debate. We’re pretty much on the same page. It’s al-ways a tough decision because both of them deserve to play.”

The Canada-Den-mark winner will play either the Czech Repub-lic or Slovakia in the semifinals. The Swe-den-Finland quarter-fi-nal winner will play the winner of the Rus-sia-United States game.

Comrie, a Winnipeg Jets’ 2013 second-round pick, has a 1.55 goals-against average and .933 save percentage in his two appearances. Fu-cale, who was drafted in the second round by the

Montreal Canadiens, has a 0.50 GAA and .975 save percentage.

Forward Sam Rein-hart is thankful he’s not the one making the goaltending decision.

“I’m not too surprised we’re still switching them,” he said. “I don’t know how you put one over the other. They’ve both been great.”

Fucale has the edge in experience.

The 19-year-old net-minder was 2-2 with a 2.42 GAA and .902 save percentage at last year’s world juniors as Canada settled for a fourth-place finish. He also won a MasterCard Memorial Cup with the Halifax Mooseheads in 2013 and earned a gold medal at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament.

“You learn a lot when you win, but you learn twice as much when you lose so things like last year is a little extra moti-vation for us,” said Fu-cale. “We want to make

sure we prepare well for this first game of the elimination round.”

Both Comrie and Fu-cale are familiar with Denmark’s Nikolaj Ehlers, who has a goal and three assists in four games. He played with Fucale on the Mooseh-eads and like Comrie, was drafted by the Jets.

“We all know he’s at his best when he skates and he’s got great hands and shot so it’s no se-cret,” said Fucale.

Columbus Blue Jack-ets prospect Oliver Bjorkstrand leads Den-mark with four goals and an assist. Denmark picked up the fourth seed in Group B follow-

ing a 0-1-2-1 round-rob-in record.

“They’re a big physi-cal team, they play well in the corner, they sacri-fice themselves and they have some skill,” said Groulx. “When you look at their specialty teams, they’re pretty good. Power play and penalty kill is pretty good and

when you look at their ratio in terms of turn-overs and takeaways they’re pretty good too.

“We expect a tough battle tomorrow.”

The semifinals will be played Sunday at Air Canada Centre. The medal games are sched-uled for the same venue on Monday.

‘We’ve just got to get points’Kootenay Ice visit Central Division rivals in Red Deer & Edmonton this weekend

The mission remains the same for the Koote-nay Ice. It’s simple and straightforward.

“We’ve got to get points,” said Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill. “It doesn’t mat-ter how. We’ve just got to get points.”

On the heels of Tues-day’s 5-4 shootout loss to the Medicine Hat Ti-gers, the Ice hit the Al-berta highways once again this weekend, vis-iting the Red Deer Reb-els Friday and Edmon-ton Oil Kings Saturday.

The WHL’s Central Division has become a muddy mess in recent weeks, with a mere six points separating four teams in the middle of the divisional pack.

The second-place Rebels hold 45 points, while the third-place Calgary Hitmen trail by two points. The surging Ice remain four points back of Red Deer and

two points up on the fifth-place Edmonton Oil Kings.

“Red Deer is playing very well right now,” McGill said. “We’ve got to go in with the mindset that we’ve got to collect points on the road, especially within our division.”

The Rebels come into Friday’s tilt fresh off an ex-tra-time loss Tues-day night as well. The Swift Current Broncos rolled into Red Deer, using overtime to earn a 4-3 victory over the Rebels.

Outside that most recent set-back, the Rebels have been a tough team to beat in the competi-tive Central Division. Sitting in second place behind the Tigers, the Rebels are 6-3-0-1 in their past 10 outings.

The Ice hope to re-ceive a boost on the blue line as Dylan Over-

dyk (concussion) is close to returning.

The rookie rearguard has been sidelined since Nov. 21, but was sched-uled to skate with the

team Thursday. Over-dyk’s showing Thursday will determine his status for Friday’s game in Red Deer.

In addition to Over-dyk’s absence, the Ice have also been without defencemen Rinat Va-liev (World Junior Championship, Russia)

and Tanner Faith (upper body, indefinite) in re-cent weeks.

That reality present-ed opportunity for 19-year-old affiliate

player Tanner Lishchynski, who joined the Ice Dec. 27. The native of Saskatoon has reg-istered one assist in three games since his arrival after posting 18 points in 29 games with the Flin Flon Bombers of the Saskatchewan Ju-nior Hockey League (SJHL) this season.

“He’s been a consistent player for us,” McGill said of Lishchynski.

“He took a cross-check-ing penalty in the third period [Tuesday in Medicine Hat] that I think was just a result, more so, of the league he just played in [the SJHL] and not so much a result of not being a good player.

“He’s been a good player for us. He’s been consistent. He’s moved the puck well. He’s com-petitive.”

While the news on Overdyk and Lishchyns-ki is of the positive na-ture, the situation is not so rosy in regards to Faith.

Prior to Christmas, it was believed the veter-an defenceman would return to action some-time around the new year. With Faith still on the shelf and his status downgraded from “week-to-week” to “in-definite,” there are more questions than answers.

According to McGill, Faith won’t be available any time soon as he dis-cusses rehabilitation options with his NHL club, the Minnesota Wild. The Wild used a fifth-round pick (139th overall) to select Faith at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Puck drop between the Ice and Rebels is slated for 7 p.m.

Dear Annie: I have been married to my sec-ond husband for 28 years. For the past 25, he has not shown me affection or touched me. We do what he wants to do, go where he wants to go, eat where he wants to eat. When I retired, I refused to be unhappy. I still see my friends and go out at least once a week. My marriage vows said “until death do us part,” so I will not divorce him. My husband is very good to my children and loves our grandchildren. I just wish he loved me. I came from a family who showed their love and always said “I love you,” so this has been hard. I dated this man for two years, and I think I married him because I wanted security. You can transfer your affection to your grandchildren. We’re glad you are getting out of the house with friends, and you might consider doing more of that. In fact, please consider doing volunteer work with babies at your local hospital. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Need Help,” the young wife who doesn’t like sex. I don’t believe she is unusual or unhealthy or necessarily asexual. I felt the same way in my 20s and still do in my 60s. I have a faith-ful husband who likes regular sex. I would be happy with frequent cuddling and only occasional sex. I tried everything to change, from hormones to counseling. What finally worked for me was realizing (in my 40s) that I am lucky to be a female and can perform sexually whether I’m aroused or not. My husband and I agreed on a fre-quency of sex that meets his needs, and once in a while, I enjoy it, too. The rest of the time I enjoy the cuddling. Sex is something I do for our marriage. He makes other compromises, such as talking with me more than he would prefer. You don’t need to be totally sexually com-patible. Marriage is full of compromises. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Barking Up a Tree,” whose neighbors are breeding dogs, and the barking and smell drives them crazy. Your response left out one option: If the couple has tried everything, they should document their efforts and contact a lawyer. The dog breeders are denying them the “use and enjoyment” of their property, and they can sue for injunctive relief and dam-ages. It should be a last resort, but it could be very effective. Sometimes a letter from an attorney stating the intent to file suit will suf-fice. Of course, before they threaten to sue, they must be prepared to follow through in case the dog breeders call their bluff. It is with deep sorrow that the family of Irene Jarrett announces her passing on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 94 years of age.

Irene was born on January 29, 1920 in England. She immigrated to Nordegg, Alberta in 1921. In 1924 she moved to Kimberley’s Top Mine. She was a kind woman and never had a bad word to say about anyone. Irene was proud to be the oldest member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Kimberley.

Irene is survived by her son Dan and his friend Sharon; 3 grandchildren Vaughn (Michelle), Troy (Corrine) and Dannette (Kendall); 7 great granddaughters; 1 great great granddaughter; 1 great great grandson; Rea, Val and Vern (Lonnie) and their son Nick, as well as many relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Doug and her son Darryl.

A memorial gathering will be held for Irene in May 2015. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Irene may do so to the: Alzheimer Society of BC, #300, 828 - West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1E2.

Calgary police say seven people were shot, leaving two of them in life-threaten-ing condition, after gunfire broke out early this morning at a New Year’s Eve house party.

“All I heard was like this ‘pop, pop, pop, pop.’ I was half asleep, half awake, and that’s all I heard, and I didn’t really know what it was so I just went back to sleep,” said Nita Nestman, who lives in a condo on the same street.

Nestman said the street had been quiet for most of the evening. When she heard the noise she didn’t expect it to be gunfire.

“I was like, ‘What the heck is that noise? Tires pop-ping?”’ she said.

“It didn’t even enter my mind that’s what it was.”

Det. Steve Adair says po-lice received multiple 911 calls just after 5 a.m. report-ing gunshots fired and that by the time officers arrived, the suspect or suspects had already left the scene.

Responding officers lo-cated five people in and around the house with gun-shot wounds and Adair says two other people later showed up at local hospitals for treatment.

He says that aside from the two in life-threatening condition, the other victims’ injuries are minor to serious.

The street in the tree-lined neighbourhood was blocked off by police tape on Thursday morning. A heavy police presence was visible on both ends of the block.

A black sweater was lying on the sidewalk in front of what appeared to be a newly built townhouse. Snow in the front yard was trampled. The home, which had a huge pine tree in front of it, was not readily visible.

Adair says more than 50 people were at the house party and police are ques-tioning about a dozen wit-nesses who were taken away from the scene on a city tran-sit bus.

He says police don’t yet have a description or know

the number of suspects and that investigators “are not getting a great deal of co-op-eration” from witnesses.

Police have sealed off the scene and the forensics team has been called in to look for evidence, Adair said.

He said police were to provide an update on the in-vestigation at an afternoon news conference.

Abdul Rasham el Kadri, who has lived on the street since 1990, said he was asleep when the incident happened and heard noth-

ing.He called it a really nice

neighbourhood.“I know almost all my

neighbours here and they know me and it’s a beautiful neighbourhood,” said el Kadri.

“I was really surprised when I heard this.”

El Kadri said the street, which is a combination of older homes and freshly built townhouses, has never had a problem with loud parties, crime or violence.
