Kim Lapacek Kim Lapacek, Persimon Dreams, is a 30+ year

old mother, wife, artist, apple orchardist, retired civil engineer, and entrepreneur.

She is currently in a major quilting phase of her creative endeavors. In 2010, she came up with the concept for Project QUILTING and since then the challenges have started, thousands of quilts have been created and hundreds of dollars worth of prizes have been given away.

She is a HUGE fan of quilt alongs. It’s really helped her hone her piecing skills and try things she never thought she would try before. Also – they’ve been great for helping her use up her scrap stash! Whatever level of quilter you are, don’t rule out a quilt along just because you don’t need ‘another’ sampler quilt – there is so much to learn out there – you’ll surprise even yourself!

She enjoys sharing her enthusiasm about creativity through teaching, lecturing, blogging and via social media

Happy March! Didn’t you find Mickey Dupree

empowering to do things that we might not have

thought of before? I enjoyed her take on different

types of textures we can include in our quilts. I am

going to use her suggestion to “Do something

different”. I am going to stop looking at the end of the

bolt or selvage of the fabric. If I like it and even if it is a

little bit crazy, I have permission to play and be creative

with my ideas. And I am also going to include more

plaid in my projects. Since she says that plaid is the

most misunderstood fabric, I owe it to myself to utilize

it more often.

Perhaps you noticed the low roar that was in our

February guild meeting. There were wall to wall

happenings! Cheerful sounds, busy people and a room

full of activities was what I heard. People notify me

often of their need for a spot at a table or an

announcement that would interest our membership. I

want to include as many as possible. When we stop

being busy, that is when we tend to get stagnant and

lose interest. The wonderful wide variety of things to

do in our guild is what keeps us alive and interesting

not only to ourselves but to visitors and new members.

We are only a short time away from our Bi-annual

Quilt Show. Please be thinking of how you can

volunteer to help it run smoothly. It takes many hands

to work together and display the hundreds of quilts

that we want to show to the community. There will be

a variety of positions and each one is important. While

you are finishing up your own quilts to enter, you can

imagine yourself in whatever opportunity you decide

that you fit best within the team of volunteers. Thank

you for being a part of PQG and stepping up to keep it

alive and growing. 2020 is already a fun year!

Workshop Policy Workshop sign-ups are open to all Guild members three (3) guild meetings before the workshop at a cost of $40 for one-day workshop ($80 for two-days). If space remains available one month prior to the workshop, non-members may register at the non-member cost of $50 for one-day ($100 for two-days). Workshop reservations are held only with full payment of the registration fee. When reservations are phoned into the Workshop Chair, the person will be placed on a waiting list until payment is received. Refunds will be given only if a workshop is cancelled by PQG. If there is no waiting list, members and non-members are responsible for finding and securing funds from another person.

Bring Your Scissors to the Show!

John Drew of Scissor Masters LLC will be a vendor at our show. He has been a sharpener for

40 years and in addition to sharpening sewing and pinking scissors will also work on knives,

clippers, floral and grooming blades. It’s been years since we have had a scissor

sharpener at the show so take advantage of this opportunity.

Just four months until our quilt show and your show committee is working hard to pull it together but we are worried

about our show and future shows.

Profits from the show fund programs for the next two years and with a budget of $15,500 a year, that means we

need to clear $31,000. Unfortunately, profits from our show have steadily declined in the last ten years. Not because

the shows haven’t been amazing! But just as our membership has declined, so has attendance at the show. It’s harder

and harder to attract vendors to our show and expenses continue to rise. We’ve been hit with several unexpected

bills for this show which could really hurt our bottom line.

So, we need your help!

1. First, enter your quilts in the show! Debbie shouldn’t have to do a song and dance and we shouldn’t have to beg

for your entries. This is our opportunity to proudly show our family, friends and the public what we create. Enter

quilts that have been completed since the 2018 show as a judged entry and receive comments from a nationally

certified quilt judge. General entries can be older as long as they haven’t been entered in our show before. This

year you can enter antique and vintage quilts in our special exhibit, “Once Upon a Quilt”. Enter those treasured

family heirlooms or quilts you have discovered at estate sales or antique shops. Quilts need to be in good

condition, not loved to death. Lots of guild members have been spending lots of their time and energy making

this show possible. If you can’t be bothered to enter your quilts, what’s the point of a quilt show? We can just

double or triple our dues instead.

2. . Participate in the Mini Quilt Auction! This year since the Education Grant Committee is in good financial shape

for the next two years, proceeds from the auction will go towards our guild programs. This could really help our

budget, so make a mini, buy a mini or do both.

Attention All Members:

We NEED QUILTS Lots of Quilts. Please dig around and find some quilts for the show. Remember general entries can be older quilts. as long as they have never been in a show before. Judged quilts need to be newer, less than 2 years since the last show. I do not want to hear excuses, like mine are not good enough, I only make wall hanging or table runners and toppers, I have not made any recently. We take all sizes table runners/toppers, mini, ,wall, quilts and bags. All levels of quilters come to our show. They want to see quilts they can make. Would you want to go to a show with only judged quilts and no regular quilts? Not me? I love getting ideas at quilt shows. Color ideas and pattern ideas. These help all of us think outside of the box we are in. Please, Please, help us bring in your quilts. Quilt in the Antique exhibit or the Applique exhibit do not count in your 5. You can entry 5 quilts in the show. Judge quilts do cost $12. Remember you need a picture (4x6). If you can't get a picture, bring you quilt to guild, we will take a picture of it. No problem. GENERAL ENTRY RULES Quilt entrant must be a member in good standing of the Prairie Quilt Guild or one of the participating regional quilt guilds. General entry quilts may have been completed at any time but must not have been previously entered into the quilt show. A total of five (5) general entry and judged quilts combined may be entered. If you must withdraw an entry, please notify us as

soon as possible. All entries must remain on display for the duration of the show. Each entry must have: - A 4” sleeve securely sewn to back of quilt entry, see instructions on website: www.wichitaquiltshow.com - An identification label securely sewn on the lower left-hand corner of the back of the quilt. This fabric label must include your name, home address, and the title of the quilt. 6. Delivery - It is the responsibility of entrant to pick up quilt drop off information at May and June 2020 PQG meetings. 7. Unclaimed entries will become the property of PQG after July 1, 2020. 8. Reasonable care will be taken to protect quilt entries but if insurance is desired, it is entrant’s responsibility. PQG will not assume responsibility for lost or damaged quilts. 9. Photography or videotaping is allowed for personal use only and the maker/owner of the quilt must be given credit. Other uses obtain permission from the show office. PQG reserves the right to use photographs of all entries in PQG publicity. 10. All entries must be clean, free of strong odors and pet fur. JUDGED ENTRY RULES 1. Quilt entrant must be a member in good standing of the Prairie Quilt Guild or one of the participating regional quilt guilds. 2. Judged entries must have been completed in 2018, 2019, or 2020. 3. Two entries per category up to a total of five (5) general and judged entries combined. If you must withdraw an entry, please

The entry form must have all information completed and all required enclosures included for an entry to be processed. 7. A $12.00 non-refundable entry fee must accompany each judged entry. 8. Select the proper category for your entry. The entries committee, in conjunction with the judge, reserves the right to make the

final placement of quilts in all categories. 9. Entries must consist of 3 layers: backing, filler, and top, held together with stitching through all three layers. No False Backs. 10. All entries must be clean, free of strong odors and pet fur. 11. Entries will be judged by a NACQJ Certified Judge. Decision of the judge is final. Each judged entry will receive a written

evaluation form which the entrant must pick up at the quilt show or make other arrangements to receive. 12. PQG will award the entrant any prize money and/or ribbon won. 13. All entries must remain on display for the duration of the show. 14. Each entry must have: - A 4” sleeve securely sewn to back of quilt entry, see instructions on website: www.wichitaquiltshow.com

- A cloth identification label securely sewn on the lower left-hand corner of the back of the quilt. This fabric label must include your name, home address, and the title of the quilt. For judging purposes, please safety pin your entry number tag over this identification label. Place your quilt in the entry bag so that the entry number tag shows.

15. Delivery - Entrants will be notified of quilt drop off sites and dates in May 2020. No judged entry delivery will be accepted after judging begins on Monday, June 22, 2020.

16. Unclaimed entries will become the property of PQG after July 1, 2020. Reasonable care will be taken to protect quilt entries but if insurance is desired, it is entrant's responsibility. PQG will not assume responsibility for lost or damaged quilts.

PRAIRIE QUILT SHOP

The largest quilt shop in Oklahoma was recently chosen

as one of the top ten shops in the nation by Quilt

Sampler magazine. Located an hour north of Oklahoma

City in a 100 year old historic building in downtown

Hennessey, OK. The store is 6,072 square feet jammed

packed with over 5000 bolts of quilting fabrics, notions

and kits. The quilt shop staff will entertain us and

provide lunch. WHAT A DEAL … of course we want to

shop their extensive stock of fabulous quilting fabrics

and accessories!

2nd Stop - Ponca City, OK

E.W. MARLAND MANSION

The Marland Mansion is a 43,561 sq. ft. magnificent

mansion that is one of the largest residences in the

southwestern United States and is know as the “Palace

on the Prairie.” The mansion took three years to

construct , 1925 to 1928. The mansion designed by

master architect John Duncan Forsyth, along with artists,

decorators, and sculptors of international reputation. It

measures 78 feet wide and 184 ft. long. It has 55 rooms,

including 10 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, 7 fireplaces, and

3 kitchens. In 1973 the mansion was designated as a

National Historic Landmark and is now a museum open

to the public.

Kids camp needs donation fabric! Bright and happy. We also need

Mini Quilt Auction

The Common Threads Quilt Show Mini Quilt Auction will be a Silent Auction. There will be a minimum base price and a Buy Now price. It will run from Thursday through Saturday at 3:00 pm. I would like to encourage all guild members to either donate a mini quilt, runner, or topper that they have made or made through their bee group. The money raised from the auction will go to support programs for the next two years. The guidelines for the quilts are:

Size – maximum 160’ perimeter (40 X 40)

Have a sleeve or hanger (rings) if intended to hang Have a label with your name, date and title The entry form is available on the quilt show website, www.wichitaquiltshow.com. 2019-2020 Block of the Month - March 20120

Kansas Theme Block #6

Hens and Chicks

For Month 6 we will be making a 6 ½ inch center block called Hens and Chicks. You may use any dark color for the large triangle and small triangles, but I will instruct using the two color combinations from past center blocks, staying with white (light) background. From white (light) background fabric, cut 1- 6 ½ x 1 1/4 inch strip for block center, two -3 x 1 1/4 inch strip for center upper and lower row. Cut six 2 inch squares. Cut these squares in half diagonally to make 12 triangles. Cut two brown (darker color) 3 ½ inch squares. Cut these in half diagonally to make 4 triangles. Cut two gold (or you may use the brown/darker color again) 2 inch squares. Cut these in half to make 4 triangles. Sew a gold triangle to a white triangle, long edge together (do a scant ¼ inch seam to make sure your square will be large enough). Complete this four times to make squares of white/gold, checking to make sure your square is a 1 3/4 inch square. Sew each small white triangle separately to the right and left side of your gold/white square, thus making a larger triangle when done, mirroring your brown triangle. Lay your large white/gold triangle on top of your brown triangle, long edges together. Sew this seam. Trim this large square combo to a 3 inch square. Sew small white strip to one side of this combo square, making sure the colored triangles are pointing into the center of the design. Sew the other combo square to the other side of the white strip. Complete this step twice, ending up with the upper and lower piece of your design, measuring 6 ½ by 3 inches. Sew the long white strip from the center design to your upper piece, making sure the colored triangles are pointing to the center. Sew the lower piece to this, again making sure your colored triangles will be pointing to the center. Completed square should measure 6 ½ by 6 ½ inches.

Border: Churndash Design Your center square will be completed by using the border Churndash design from previous block of the month designs. See previous months for instructions for this.

2020 Spring Quilt Retreat March 23-28, 2020

There is still time to register!

Would you like to be in the company of others who share your interests for a fun time in March? Then the Prairie

Quilt Guild’s retreat is for you! As a requirement of WheatState Camp, we MUST have at least 20 participants each

day for this retreat to be able to be held as planned.

You have now through the March guild meeting to make your reservation for the Prairie Quilt Guild spring retreat.

The retreat is held at Wheat State Camp located between Andover and Augusta just north of Highway 400 (Kellogg).

Note: You do not have to attend all days listed, you can attend any number of days as you would like (1, 2, 3, etc. and

they don’t have to be consecutive!)

If you have reserved your spot final payment is due at the March meeting and full payment is due at that time.

We will have the forms for registration available at the March meeting, you can also find the form for registration

on pqgks.com website under links. Also, all information about the retreat can be found there.

If you cannot make the March meeting you can send your payment along with the registration form if you are

registering at this time, or your final payment if you have already made a deposit, to Donna Loehr – address is in the

directory.

We hope you will consider joining us for a time where we get to know other members of our Guild, sew a lot,

share snacks, maybe play a few games, but most of all just have fun! If you have any questions you can email Donna

Wichita Family Crisis Center who provides transitional housing for battered women; KVC Hospital which provides Children's Psychiatric Treatment;

Sedgwick Co. Child Advocacy Center's ICT SOS for teens being rescued from sex trafficking; and two Nursing Homes that have been taken over by the state, one in Eldorado and one in Wichita.

About Our Guild

The Prairie Quilt Guild meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Pleasant Valley United Methodist

Church, 1600 W. 27th N., Wichita 67204. Guild meetings are scheduled from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m.

unless otherwise announced. Annual dues are $25.00 for the period October through September; after June 1

a first-time member will pay $12.50.
