Organizers are hoping for the arrival of win-ter, as they have rescheduled the fi fth annual 14 Wing Family snowshoe and sleigh ride day originally planned for January 27 to February 17. If we are not able to hold the event February 17, the event will be cancelled.

The community centre and Greenwood Military Family Resource Centre will co-host the afternoon of snowshoeing at the 14 Wing Green-wood Golf Course, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. This event is a challenge to all defence team members to get active and enjoy a winter afternoon with their families. All military members, their families and valid Recreation Card holders are welcome.

This event is also a “Take the Roof off Winter” celebration, part of a physical activity campaign designed to help Nova Scotians of all ages im-prove their health by getting outdoors and being more active in winter.

Snowshoes will be available to fi t any size foot, and there will be a Kid Zone with face painting, crosswords, etc. Sleigh rides and hot drinks are also planned. If you would like to bring your own snowshoes, cross country skis, Nordic walking poles etc, please do. Prizes may be won along the course and back in the club house.

It was a family affair January 27, as 14 Wing Greenwood hosted a swearing-in ceremony for a new Air Reserve member.

“I was choked up; it was mov-ing,” said Master Corporal David Murphy, on daughter Amanda’s decision to join the Canadian Air Force as a Reservist. ”I didn’t

expect her to join the military four years ago, if you’d have asked me, but we’re all behind her.”

That also includes mom, Corporal Deborah Murphy. If you count implicit support from a family that understands what being a part of a military tradi-tion means, the Berwick family now can point to four genera-tions of commitment.

David was a Reservist himself for four years, before starting a 20-year career in the Regular force. After retiring, he returned in 2003 as a Reservist and now works in aircraft maintenance.

Deborah joined the Regular force in 1979, the same year as David: the couple met in the military and later married. She left the force at one point for one year, but came back to the mi-

litia and then the Air Force. She works in 14 Wing Greenwood’s Air Reserve Flight orderly room.

David’s father joined the Air Force after the Second World War and worked as a radio operator and a navigator. His grandfather joined the British Royal Horse Artillery in 1914, then the Royal Flying Corps in 1916 and, fi nally, the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1925.

You’re in luck if you’re plan-ning a party for your birthday boy or girl in Greenwood.

Along with a range of commu-nity business and tourist attrac-tions that will host your event, 14 Wing Greenwood’s own base facilities add something extra.

“In 20 years of being here,” says Kim Dixon, the coordinator of child and youth services at the Greenwood Military Family Re-

source Centre, “I have never had a parent come in and say they were stressed about what to do for their child’s birthday party.”

“There is more opportunity here – a child with a birthday in July to October, say, is in the peak of festival season, corn mazes, the zoo…. There are so many different ways to have a party, and kids love different.”

Dixon, the mom of a nine-year-old girl, knows parents want quick, hassle-free birthday parties, and organizations and

businesses that take care of everything are always the better bet. The decorating, loot bags, cake and food, games and prizes you need to consider for a home-based birthday party – that all adds up, in money and time.

“It is always cheaper to go out. Parents tend to forget they’re supposed to be celebrat-ing a child’s birthday if they have to do all that themselves.”

Dixon says a three-hour wag-on ride at a nearby farm can easily be turned into a cowboy-themed party. There are cooking parties, parks, movies, beaches and more to thinking of.

“Be creative. There are so many options,” Dixon says.

She particularly likes the access the community has to 14 Wing facilities, like the pool, bowling centre and gyms.

“We are really lucky with what’s already here.”

In the swimParty-goers get a little talk

from the lifeguards at 14 Wing Greenwood’s indoor pool about pool rules – “and then they jump in,” says aquatics supervisor Marie-Claude Carrier.

“We receive a lot of bookings for the pool parties.”

Kids of all ages enjoy the swim time, and the Fitness & Sports Centre’s facility – with its slide, toys and games, and fl oat-ing mat – fi lls an hour with fun. Post-party, the centre’s class-room is available for another hour for cake and social time.

The pool parties generally have room for 25 kids, which includes two lifeguards; you can add numbers when you book, which ensures Carrier has quali-

fi ed staff on hand to supervise the pool.

Got a summer birthday? Everything indoors can happen outdoors at the base’s outdoor pools on Church Street. Car-rier says parties may book the pools privately, and make use of the gazebo, a BBQ and other poolside features during warmer months.

Strike!What’s North America’s birth-

day party hot spot?“Bowling centres are the

number one spot for parties,” says Greenwood Bowling Centre manager Leon Bullock. “Kids go crazy for the parties.”

Even better is the reaction from parents after they’ve had a fully-catered, hosted party – complete with face painting, balloon animals and no clean-up worries:

“… an amazing job with my child’s birthday party… atten-tive to our every need. I would not hesitate to have another birthday party at the Greenwood Bowling Centre… thank you for going the extra mile in making this birthday party memorable and stress-free,” wrote Jennifer MacLeod after her child’s party.

Military parents Robyn Lush and Trevor Warren were scram-bling to organize a going-away party for their 10-year-old daughter before being posted out of Greenwood. The bowling party organized by Bullock and his staff on short notice was “exceptional… defi nitely money well spent and my daughter’s best party yet!

“This was our fi rst experience with having a bowling party,

and Leon… planned this event completely. The kids had so much fun, and Leon was great with them.”

Bullock says it’s his centre’s aim to please.

“We cater to everything and anyone, we’re fl exible – at the end of the day, we want to make it so easy for you to come here, and then tell all your family and friends about the fun you had,” he says.

The bowling centre offers several party packages, from basic bowling to a face painter, balloon maker and even a staff host to set up, clean up and keep party-goers entertained. The cake and drinks are ready as ordered; “if you want a fruit tray, I’m already at the store and can pick it up for you, too,” Bullock says.

“A lot of people stress over birthday parties, and when they call and fi nd out we do everything for them they’re relieved. Parents can go to their kid’s party and enjoy themselves, too.”

Gym timeHave an active crowd com-

ing? Book the 14 Wing Green-wood Community Centre gym for two hours of whatever your party-goers want to do.

“All that space? All that equip-ment?” community centre direc-tor Jill Jackson says. “Let them run around!”

Jackson says party bookings can make use of the gym and a range of equipment, from ball hockey to basketball to even dances for teen parties. Parents can organize their own games and activities, or just let the kids make their own fun – and

be active. There’s a nearby room for cake time, too.

The gym at the Fitness and Sports Centre is also available for bookings, says Nicole Pep-pard. She sees a lot of floor hockey and basketball activity taking place, whether it’s kids, parties or adult groups.

“It’s generally an active crowd, for sure, looking for the gym – there is the classroom for cake or pizza, but, generally, it’s just the activity: eat, and run!”

On iceIn the winter season – or, at

least, whenever the ice is in at the Greenwood Arena and curl-ing club – you can hold a really cool event.

The rink and the four-sheet curling club are both available for rental, either for parties, work-sponsored events, neigh-bourhood get-togethers or other larger gatherings.

Rink time is dependant on availability, but there are good times available outside minor hockey and league play. Out-side an actual booking, public skating Saturday, between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday, between 11 a.m. and noon, is always an option. Nets and pylons for young skaters can be provided, and the Bombers’ warm room is available for your social afterwards.

The curling club is busy with league and bonspiel action, and it gets heavier later in the sea-son schedule. Daytime events – such as school visits or cor-porate-organized bookings – are an easier fi t. The club has slid-ers, brooms and also the lighter “Little Rocks” stones for use.

And, David’s father’s brother earned a Distinguished Fly-ing Cross, presented by King George, for his service during the Second World War. Unfortunately, he paid a high price for his military career: he was one of 21 Air Force personnel killed in a plane crash in Saskatchewan after the war.

“There has been a lot of commitment, yes,” said Da-vid. “Amanda knows what that’s like.”

Amanda, 23, fi nished high school and attended com-munity college in Middleton for cosmetology training. She had a son two years ago, graduated last spring and did

“It was what she wanted – but not what she expected,” David said. With a young child to consider, Amanda started thinking a year ago about the work and life of her parents.

“She needs a secure ca-reer, and she needs to do that for her son,” David said. “We’re all looking forward

to her getting on in a good career. As a Reservist, post-ings are not something she’ll have to deal with for awhile. If she does decide to roll over to the Regular force, there is time down the road.”

Amanda was sworn into the Reserves at 14 Wing’s headquarters on a Friday, and reported to work the next Monday as a supply tech.

Vanessa Roman is used to seeing her husband, Major Jason Roman, fl y off in his Sea King helicopter with the Canadian Armed Forces. Now she’s doing her own bit of moving - to the small screen.

The mum of three and Halifax real estate agent

hosts “Reno vs Relocate,” which will begin airing on HGTV network in June. In the show, Roman helps families decide whether they should renovate their existing home, or fi nd a new one. For military families, the decision is often far more straight forward:

experience making these moves go smoothly, and she puts in the effort to make sure that’s the case.

“I come from a mili-tary family, I’m married to a military guy. I under-stand the challenges of moving to a new city and integrating the family within an existing com-munity. There are a lot of hoops to jump through, and you generally get just seven days to fi nd a house.”

Military transfers are a unique way to move, she says, and the process can be time consuming and complicated. Ro-mans is a registered real estate agent with Brook-fi eld Global Relocation, and she is also an active member of the Nova Scotia Association of Realtors and a member of the Canadian Real Estate Association. She holds degrees in economics from Dalhousie University and journalism from the Uni-

versity of King’s College. That mixed background, combined with the fl air you need on TV and her military family experience, means Romans knows what these moves demand.

“I saw that other agents were not able to understand the unique prospect of buying a home for a military fam-ily. This is your single biggest investment as a family and you need to select an agent carefully or you will lose money.”

So, do you want a TV star as your real estate agent?

“In Nova Scotia, you can become a licensed real estate agent in only three months,” says Ro-man. “That’s why it’s extremely important for you to interview agents.

“Mistakes in real es-tate are costly, so, if you are ill advised, it can cost you thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars. So, even if

my advice just helps people to pick a better agent, I think it’s worthwhile.

“Being given a TV show hopefully means someone thinks I know what I’m talk-ing about!”

International Military Pil-grimage, May 11 to 13, in Lourdes, France. The Canadi-an Forces has been an active participant in this pilgrimage and has proudly represented our country over the last 53 years.

14 Wing Greenwood cel-ebrated Winter Carnival 2012 February 2 and 3, closing with a glamorous Oscars-style cere-mony true to the carnival theme of “Lights, Camera, Carnival!”

Teamwork and esprit de corps were abundant throughout the carnival, as units competed in events ranging from hockey to the lip sync. All teams had large cheering sections with an array of elaborate costumes fitting branch sub-themes. There were also family events February 4 that were well attended.

Many thanks to everyone who helped make this event a huge success. A special thank you to the volunteers on the Winter Carnival commit-tee, OPIs of events, Safe Ride Program volunteers and event staff. A big thank you goes to our carnival judging committee, including Wing Commander Colonel Jim Irvine, Wing Chief Warrant Officer Jim Jardine, Cathy Irvine and Amanda Jar-dine for taking time to support the carnival.

Greenwood Golf offers membership sign-up bonus

The club offi ce will be open weekdays beginning February 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The

club offers many membership and power cart options, so call 765-1494 ext 5880 and ask for Karen to get all the details. The club also offers the opportu-nity to spread fees over seven

months, from April to October; come out early (before March 13) to take advantage of the maximum number of months. You could be a member for as little as $82.92 a month. We are one of the few clubs that offer a spousal, senior and weekday rate. Our junior membership rate includes our Junior Program, which is getting a complete overhaul for the upcoming season, with Tamara Stephen taking on the program. The 14 Wing Greenwood Curling Club will host the 2012 Nova Scotia Curling Association Men’s Dominion Club Championship February 23 to 26.

This event, designed for the club curler, has attracted 20 teams from clubs across the province. The winner goes on to the national event in Novem-ber at the Scarborough Golf and Country Club, Ontario.

The home team includes skip Dave Ronaldson, third Dale King, second Norm Wreden-

hagen and lead Roger Brooks. Three members of this team work at 14 Wing Greenwood.

The volunteer hours the Greenwood club will put in are numerous: there are 46 games to offi cially time and score, under the direction of NSCA offi cial Doug MacEwan - who just happens to be a member of the home club. The first draw starts at 6 p.m. February 23. The championship is at 5 p.m. February 26.

Spectators are welcome, and admission is free.

Canadian Blood Services will hold a two-day donor clinic at the 14 Wing Greenwood Community Centre February 20 and 21, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. or 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. both days.

Every 60 seconds, someone in Canada requires blood or a blood product, so please try and take the time to donate. If you get a fl u shot, you must wait two days after the shot before donating.

Defence team members are encouraged to sign a Partner for Life member registration form, available during the

clinics. Once you sign the form, you never have to do it again. The form allows CBS to track how many times you have donated on behalf of 14 Wing, and what percentage of our goal has been achieved. DND has set a goal of having 100 donors register in 2012.

The Women’s Place Re-source Centre in Annapolis Royal is seeking four women to join the advisory board of the Western Area Women’s Coalition.

Bridgetown in 1991, dedicated to the well-being of women providing one-to-one confi-dential support, empowering women to make informed decisions and referring them to appropriate services. We develop and deliver programs to women based on needs identifi ed by the community in life skills, health and wellness, budgeting, economic develop-ment, healthy relationships, job search and computer skills

and legal information. We work with women as well as organi-zations to develop initiatives which support women. We give presentations, promoting public awareness as well as in-formation on women’s issues.

We are especially proud of the Frances Mills-Clements Bursary and congratulate the 2011 recipient, Lori Ann Ste-phenson, as well as the Trea-sure Beach Women’s Benevo-lent Society in Jamaica upon their receipt of money from the Frances Mills-Clements In-

ternational Development Fund. Our primary fundraiser for the bursary is The Road Here: Stories from Senior Women in Rural Nova Scotia, edited and photographed by Rachel Brighton.

International Women’s Day March 8. Hal Theriault has written a new play based loose-ly on The Road Here, titled Travelling the Road, to be pre-sented by the Digby Players at the Desmond Piers Theatre in Cornwallis at 7:30 p.m. Tickets $14, available at the door on the night of the performance and prior to the event at our offi ce. Sisters in Steel will also be presented free in celebra-tion of International Women’s Day in Annapolis Royal March 10, featuring forging demon-

strations, open anvil teaching stations a gallery of Maritime women’s ironwork and more. And, King’s Theatre will screen Iron Lady March 9 at 8 p.m. and March 11 at 2 p.m. Tickets are, adult, $7; students, $6.
