FOCUS on: Troops to Teachers Non Graduate Programme

CTP FOCUS on Resettlement Newsletter • Issue 55 • July 2013

www.ctp.org.uk

Have you ever thought about a

career in teaching?

The Troops to Teachers non-graduate

programme is a government initiative which

aims to help non-graduate Service leavers to

transfer their existing skills into a rewarding

second career as a teacher.

Through the Troops to Teachers non-graduate

programme a range of initiatives will be available to

support and encourage outstanding Service leavers

to make the transition from the military into

teaching.

WHY BECOME A TEACHER? Because the skills and experience many Service

leavers, like you, have are highly comparable with

those required to be a good teacher. The Troops to

Teachers non-graduate programme builds on those

skills to help you start a rewarding new career.

Skills such as the ability to communicate,

motivate, problem solve and to handle

challenging situations mean that you’re well

placed to inspire others and to be a natural role

model. If you’re interested in a career with structure

and routine, yet where no two days are the same,

then teaching could be the perfect way to utilise your

existing skills.

THE PROGRAMME The Programme is school based, there are no fees

and you’ll be paid a salary of £11,200 as an

unqualified teacher during both years of training.

Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) year is your first

teaching year beyond the Troops to Teachers 2 year

programme. Your salary will increase to a qualified

teacher salary in your NQT year. In England and

Wales the current salary starts from £21,588 and in

inner London it’s £27,000.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS The application process for the programme starting

in January 2014 is now open, and the deadline for

submission is 20 September 2013. The first step is

to complete an online application, followed by a

personal statement, numeracy and literacy tests,

work experience, a face to face interview and finally

a school interview – so be sure to begin your

application early to ensure you’re well prepared.

Please note: applications are not dealt with on a

first-come, first-served basis, and you are therefore

encouraged to spend time carefully considering your

answers and entering your qualifications in order to

submit a strong application. See below for guidance

on how to create a strong personal statement as

this is a really important element of your application

too.

YOUR PERSONAL STATEMENT

The Personal Statement part of your application is

an area which will require careful consideration, and

it is extremely important to spend time writing

this document in the appropriate way.

Click here to view guidance notes on completing

your Personal Statement, and remember your

Career Consultant is also available to help you with

this.

Click here to visit the Troops to Teachers

website for full details about how to apply.

Note on Eligibility: If you are in the 2 years before discharge or

in the 2 years post discharge from the Armed Forces, you are

eligible to apply for the Troops to Teachers non-graduate

programme. If you do not meet this eligibility criteria, you may

still be eligible for other teacher training routes and more

information can be found here

If you have any questions, please contact the Troops to Teachers

team direct at [email protected] or click here to visit the website.

Background Kevin Kiff served for almost 23 years in the Royal

Signals, leaving as a Staff Sergeant in early 2013. He

enjoyed many aspects of his Service career, citing

comradeship and the opportunity to travel as his

personal highlights, but having completed his 22

years service, Kevin felt that the time was right to

embark upon a new civilian career.

During his time in the military, Kevin gained

experience in IT and Telecoms, backing this up with

City & Guilds qualifications in Fibre Optic Cabling and

Copper Cabling, along with a Professional Recognition

Award at Graduateship (GCGI) level.

Along with his vocational qualifications, Kevin also

cites a number of soft skills gained during his career:

“All skills learnt such as discipline, selfless

commitment, leadership, cultural awareness and

trade skills have been extremely useful in my

transition to civilian life.”

Resettlement Having registered for resettlement via his second line

Service Resettlement Advisor, Kevin began the

process by attending a three day Career Transition

Workshop (CTW) at RRC Tidworth. He says,

“The workshop facilitator was extremely informative,

providing the information pitched at the right level

for all in attendance, giving clear guidance on all

aspects of transition. I think her delivery of the

workshop content made people feel at ease with the

process and certainly helped me understand how to

get out into the marketplace and sell myself.”

Kevin says that he found the CV writing and interview

techniques areas of the workshop most helpful, and

that “this I feel helped me prepare fully for the career

I am currently undertaking.”

Although not part of his resettlement training, Kevin

was also able to complete an ITIL Level 3 course

during the Regiment’s Special to Arm training, which

fitted perfectly with his plans to pursue a career in IT

or telecoms. The course, which is the most widely

accepted approach to IT service management in the

world, provided Kevin with all the relevant

information for his current employment.

www.ctp.org.uk

“Enjoy the role you undertake and you will find you

fit in just fine, transition is easier than you think. Be

yourself, don’t be afraid of change, and to bring an

old cliché into the mix, no question is a stupid

question always ask and it will be a doddle.”

Outcome Once ready to enter the job market Kevin uploaded

his CV to a number of job sites, but like many

Service leavers, his route into civilian employment

was via his network of existing contacts. He

explains, “I gave my CV to a colleague who knew

somebody employed within the company. He then

gave my CV to one of the business heads and the

job was offered.”

Kevin now works as Network Team Leader for

Capita Secure Information Systems, and his role

involves the daily management of network

engineers, approval and authorisation of changes,

and ensuring that tasks are completed in line with

customer Service Level Agreements. Kevin says the

only obstacle faced when settling in was

“understanding the customer and financial elements

of the business” but has now been in the role for

several months and says there are many similarities

between his civilian and military careers.

Kevin’s final words of advice to Service leavers are,

“Don’t panic or stress about the thought of working

within a civilian career. You will find it very similar in

many ways to that of the military although there are

some minor differences like customer environments

and some organisations aren’t as structured or

disciplined as those of the military.”

“Enjoy the role you undertake and you will find you

fit in just fine, transition is easier than you think. Be

yourself, don’t be afraid of change, and to bring an

old cliché into the mix, no question is a stupid

question always ask and it will be a doddle.”

Success Story of Kevin Kiff Read about how Kevin Kiff found his new role via a military colleague, and now uses the IT and telecoms experience he gained during his service with the Royal Signals.

WORK IN THE OIL & GAS INDUSTRY

If you’re planning on working in the popular Oil &

this sector.

POTENTIAL JOB

APPLICATION SCAMS

- BE CAUTIOUS!

When applying for jobs via

recruitment websites, it is

important to be aware of

possible scam emails being sent by somebody

purporting to be an employer.

Indicators to watch out for are:

▪ Being invited to interview, but asked to call a

telephone number that starts with an ‘070’ to

confirm a time. These numbers often connect

callers to a pre-recorded voice message and

may incur high charges.

▪ Receiving an email from a free email account

such as Yahoo or Hotmail, rather than from

one associated with the company posting the

job.

You are encouraged to watch out for these

factors, and don’t hesitate to contact your Career

Consultant if you are unsure.
