Principal Highlights:

1/2CM did a fantastic job of demonstrating the Peace Code focus of, “Care for myself and others”, on parade last week. Well done!

Last week was National Science Week, our students were challenged to think scientifically. See our photos of what occurred in Science classes.

I attended the “School of Rock” excursion with our musical students last week. I was impressed with their demonstration of our Peace Code and representation of our school.

Mrs Bartz invited me to join her industry visit to Queen Mary Falls with her Hospitality students. Once again I was impressed with how the students represented our school and how this visit assisted them to understand the nature of the hospitality industry.

I met with our student leaders on Friday where we discussed the success of their project of facilitating sporting activities each week with our Primary students. They hope to extend this project into other areas in Term 4 such as indoor and cultural activities.

I look forward to engaging in Book Week activities this week to celebrate the “secret power” that reading can have on learning.

Principal Award Winner, Josephine P, for her contribution to her class and school through the extra efforts that are made each week. Well done!

It’s all about attendance!Being Ready to Learn Every Day really does make a difference!

Our attendance percentage for Week Five: 90.9%

Our Target: 95%

School Opinion Survey OpportunityPlease consider completing the school opinion to provide us with valuable information to make our school the best it can be. See the School News section for more information.

Our Vision:

every student is able to successfully engage in purposeful and individually challenging learning

every student feels that they are a valued member of our school community

every student can stand up, academically, with any other student in our country

every student is presented with options for future pathways and these options are valued

We believe that by offering a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, our students can develop into well-rounded individuals, however to fully support the learning of our students we sometimes have to make decisions regarding the number of extra-curricular activities that we can offer.

This term we have a number of learning excursions, sporting opportunities, work placements and cultural learning opportunities, as well as the preparation for our musical culminating week 9. This term we have reduced the number extra-curricular activities including Year 4-6 Ball Games Carnival and the BD Athletics for JS students. Consideration will be made for these events to be attended biannually in the future, to ensure all students are given opportunities to align with our vision.

Our targets….

How did your child go in meeting our school targets in their semester one report card?

Did they achieve a C or higher in Maths and English?

Did they meet our attendance target of 95%?

These targets correspond with our learner agency focus’ of highly effective teaching practices to improve writing and problem solving. There is a strong correlation to attending every day ready to learn to your child’s engagement in consistent delivery of the curriculum and therefore improvement in their learning.

Our NAPLAN results will be released shortly where we will be reviewing how our students have progressed on the National Tests in Reading, Writing and Numeracy. Our aim is to have an improvement in the number of students achieving in the upper two bands (U2B) and that our students make the standard progression over the 2 year period between tests that meets our philosophy of 12 months growth for 12 months learning.

School of Rock ExcursionThank you to the parents who assisted on the excursion. A wonderful experience for our students to see a live performance.

Can you help us?One thing many of us have a lot of at the moment is rocks. Mrs Barling is currently looking for a source of smooth river pebbles from approximately 3-8 cms in diameter. These are for a special project. Please contact her or let the office know if you may be able to source some and she will be in touch soon.

Why We Support Book Week at Killarney P-10 State SchoolThis week August 19-23 marks a very special time in our school year as we celebrate our love of books and reading. This year’s theme as set by the Children’s Book Council of Australia is “Reading is my Secret Power”. The following article comes from Scholastic, and is a terrific article capturing what Book Week is about and why we celebrate it.

For Absence notification email [email protected] or text the absence phone on 0428 196 801P&C Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm. All parents and community members most welcome

August is a special month for book-lovers. It’s that particular time of year when, during your daily commute, you could be lucky enough to see Captain Underpants, Dorothy, Harry Potter, Mary Poppins and Thelma the Unicorn all walking together to school. No, we haven’t entered a magical parallel universe where characters from our favourite books walk among us—we’ve entered Book Week! Book Week is a special time when schools and libraries across Australia join in the celebration of children’s literature. During this time, children are often encouraged to dress as their favourite book characters to take part in book parades and assemblies. However, Book Week is so much more than just another school dress-up day; it is an annual celebration that encourages children to connect with books and reading on a fun, personal level. Book Week was first held in Australia in 1945 with the theme ‘United through Books’. Teachers, librarians, booksellers and publishers joined in the national celebration with activities that highlighted the importance of reading. Since this time, Book Week has become ingrained in our culture, especially in the education sector. Schools and libraries take this golden opportunity to promote reading and increase the literacy skills of Australian children. This is usually where the famed book parades come into play. Children get to choose their favourite book character and— with the help of crafty family members—get to embody that character for the day. The social benefit of this is that children get a chance to have fun and creatively express themselves amongst their peers and family members. The educational benefit is that, by dressing up as their favourite bookish character, children are given the time to truly connect with books and to associate reading with fun. The power of choice plays an important role in costume selection as well. Children are more likely to connect with a book that they have chosen for themselves, so allowing your child to select a character idea for themselves further strengthens their bond with this book. And Book Week is not just for children who are already voracious bookworms. It is also a fantastic time to introduce emerging readers to the joys of books. A child may not be fully invested in novels, but perhaps they could dress up as their favourite comic book character or as an animal from their favourite non-fiction reference book? The possibilities are endless when it comes to costume ideas, and they can be as simple or as elaborate as you like; as long as the child is having fun. Book Week activities are another powerful way to allow children to engage more closely with books and the written word. Many schools encourage children to write and share reviews of the book that their chosen dress-up character is from. Reading aloud to peers and sharing the reading experience together has been proven to improve a child’s vocabulary, communication skills and social skills. Book-related craft activities are another way of encouraging children to associate fun with books and learning. Family and community involvement is another important aspect of Book Week. Numerous studies have shown that reading books to and with children deepens your bond with them, while also fostering a love of learning and reading books for pleasure. If a child sees a loved one enjoying books, they’re more likely to associate books with enjoyment.

We believe that Book Week is truly a special time. The week-long celebration of literature sends a powerful message to children—and adults—across Australia; reading is vitally important and books are worthy of being cherished. Having the opportunity to personally connect with books as

a child creates a sense of fun and nostalgia around reading as they grow into adulthood. Anything we can do to help light the reading spark within every child should be celebrated. Parent and carers are welcome to join in to our lunchtime activities held in the library from 1.15-1.45pm each day during Book Week. Book Week starts with a staff poem on parade

School Opinion SurveyThank you to all of those who have already completed the Parent/Caregiver Survey. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey yet, please note that the online surveys will remain open until Friday 23 August 2019. This is your opportunity to provide feedback about what our school does well and how we can improve to help shape our school’s future.

Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at the school. School Tablets will be available on Wednesday the 21 August from 8am to 9am.

If you haven’t received any survey access details or have misplaced, please contact Sue on telephone 07 46646333 or email [email protected]

Support for the droughtOn Friday we received a HUGE donation. Representatives from Gift of Music passed on a new saxophone, an iPad and lots of lego for our school to enjoy. This donation was funded by Good360 and Rural Aid with the intent of assisting schools during the drought. A big thanks to Mr E for facilitating this.

Broncos Primary Challenge The Broncos Primary Challenge will take place on Friday 23 August in Warwick. Students have been given a note and permission form for the sport they nominated for. If your copy has gone missing, please contact the Office for a replacement.

We currently have enough students for two netball teams and are negotiating the nomination of two KSS teams for the day. A change in venue this year means we could be restricted to one team – we are waiting to hear back from the coordinator about this. In the meantime, we are looking for volunteers to help with umpiring on the day. We would require at least two umpires if we are able to have two teams from our school. If you are able to assist on this day, even for part of the day, please let us know.

Fast ForcesA force causes an object to undergo a change in speed, direction or shape.

Contact forces can act on an object by direct contact. Push and pull are examples of contact forces.

Non-contact forces can act on an object indirectly. Gravity is a non-contact force that pulls us back to Earth. Imagine skipping without gravity!
