HAVE YOU ever found yourself resenting a person or a particular situation? If so, just stop and ask yourself: “Is this making me angry?” Resentments that you hold on to can boomerang and become self-anger.
Such anger can aff ect your internal organs, especially the heart, liver and joints. You may fi nd yourself experiencing symptoms like palpitations, blood malfunctions, poor energy in the morning and aching joints.
The resentment can also impact on your daily life, harming your relationships with yourself and your family.
No matter who or what has created the anger, it is you who is aff ected. You may have done nothing wrong yet you feel the burden of guilt and self-reproach within – and you feel guilty about that too! But it is only you that can heal and resolve the anger with forgiveness.
Forgiveness is a paradox: it is simultaneously extremely simple and exceptionally diffi cult. Yet we all have it in us to forgive. The fi rst step is to try to replace any negative thoughts that enter your mind
with more compassionate ones.
Be kind and loving to yourself. Recognise that it takes time and energy to wake up and appreciate yourself. Stop hurting yourself with the negative thoughts – just dissolve them with love.
Unkind words and deeds from others are part of their and your journey through life. Everyone is acting out their own given circumstances, so learn to detach yourself from other people’s negativity and drama.
Have the grace to accept that everyone is unique, and move on. Self-forgiveness is part of your spiritual path of learning and growing.
Healing occurs within you fi rst and then to your relationships with yourself and others. To close, here are two beautiful quotations on the subject:
“To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return you will receive untold peace and happiness” (Robert Muller) and “To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you” (Lewis B. Smedes).

Timing: Consuming the right foods before sport or exercise can help you to optimally fuel your body and obtain the most out of your physical eff orts. The time required for digestion of pre- exercise food depends
on the type and quantity con-sumed.
A general guide is to eat a meal about 3-4 hours before exercise or take a lighter snack 1-2 hours before exercise. You need to experiment to fi nd the timing and amount of food and fl uid that suits your individual needs.
What should I eat?: Food eat-en before aerobic activity such as running, swimming, cycling etc should provide carbohy-drate as the main fuel to the working muscles. It should also be low in fat and moderate in fi bre to make digestion easier in order to reduce the risk of tummy upsets during exercise.
The following foods are suit-able to eat 3-4 hours before exercise: breakfast cereal with milk, wholegrain bread roll with chicken and salad, fruit salad with yoghurt. Other suitable meals include potato, pasta or brown rice with a light sauce, vegetables and lean meat or fi sh.
If you are undertaking high levels of more intense training or fi nding it diffi cult to keep weight on, then you may need an additional top-up snack to 1-2 hours before exercise e.g. milk shake, fruit smoothie, cereal bar, yoghurt, fruit or a sports bar.
How Much?: The amount of food required before exercise is dependent upon many fac-tors. As a Dietitian, part of my role is to calculate the correct volumes required based on the individuals gender, age, build, their job, type of exercise (weight training or cardio ses-sions) and ultimately the indi-viduals goal i.e. to boost per-formance and maintain weight, lose body fat or even bulk up.
Don’t forget your fl uids! Aim to drink 500mls or one pint of water 1 hour before exercise to allow for absorption and en-sure your body is well hydrated (I will hopefully discuss fl uids and hydration in a later issue).

WITH ‘World War Z’ starring Brad Pitt due out next year now is a good time to read the book by Max Brooks.
‘World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War’ recounts of the apocalyptic and horrifying years and aims to ensure we never forget how close we came to total annihilation. Told from the perspective of numerous survivors from all over the world, from Denver to South
Africa, Sydney to Yonkers, Malibu to India, the book captures the sacrifi ces and, toward the end, the ingenuity of our race to defend and save our cities, towns, and villages from a plague that seemed virtually impossible to stop.
Brooks tells a moving story of courage and survival and gives us insight into the key military strategies that helped us take our world back.
