Ideas to Help Students Get Organized By Maria Garcia
http://www.OnlineOrganizing.com
As a student, it's always the perfect time for you
to get ORGANIZED. Here are a few tips to help
you manage your time, avoid clutter, set goals,
and stay on an organized path to success.
DON'T RUSH
Wake up EARLY enough for school to arrive
well ahead of time. If you need 30 minutes to
get up, shower and dress, pad that time by wak-
ing up at least 45 minutes prior to your depar-
ture. To ensure you don't turn off your ALARM
clock and go back to sleep, place your clock at
the far end of your room. This way, you actually
have to get out of bed to turn it off, and you're
most likely to stay up.
AVOID CLUTTER
At the beginning of the school year, you have no clutter. Be careful not to BUILD clutter as the year pro-
gresses. Create separate folders for school announcements, tests that have been graded, papers and so on. As
papers become outdated, such as an event that has passed, TOSS them immediately.
EFFECTIVE STUDY AREA
Designate a quiet, well-lit area for studying. Don't study in front of the television, or in an area of your home
where you're bound to be DISTRACTED. Hang a "do not disturb" sign on your door. If you can't find a quiet
spot at home, go to the library. In addition, you should study while sitting at a table or desk. Avoid studying
in a very comfortable chair or a bed, which may cause you to feel DROWSY.
AVOID OVERLOAD
While you may sign up for extra school ACTIVITIES, such as basketball or cheerleading, don't take on too
much. First determine how much study time you need. Then, choose one or two recreational activities that
you enjoy.
COLOR-CODE
You may consider color-coding similar activities on your CALENDAR. For example, highlight all upcoming
tests in yellow, study time in green and recreational activities in pink.
EAT YOUR BROCCOLI FIRST
Imagine eating your dessert before your broccoli. What would be left for you to look forward to? Just the
same, do your homework for your most DIFFICULT subjects first. Then, everything else will be a breeze,
and therefore, more enjoyable.

COUNSELING SERVICES AT KILIAN College is an exciting time, but can also be stressful. Juggling work, family and
school can make it difficult to find time to take care of yourself.
Counseling services from a licensed, professional counselor are available at no cost to
our students. The counselor is available to assist the student in dealing with personal
or social concerns and academic or vocational issues. The counselor will refer stu-
dents to outside agencies when appropriate. All students are encouraged to use this
service. Appointments can be made by calling 605-221-3121 or by stopping by the
counselor’s office in Room 121. Walk-ins welcome! Counseling services are confi-
dential and adhere to FERPA guidelines.
Hello! My name is Marcella Prokop. Many students know me as a fixture of
the Student Success Center, where I work Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, admin-
istering tests and helping students with study questions. My strongest skills are in the
writing world, so I spend a lot of my time reading student papers, offering suggestions
on how to revise, organize or simply begin them. This kind of work is important to me
because I believe that we all want to express ourselves as best we can, and learning
about effective writing is one of the ways to do that. I majored in journalism at Augus-
tana and received my BA in 2005, and in 2011 I completed my Master of Fine Arts
degree in creative writing through Chatham University in Pittsburgh.
I also teach composition at Kilian, and when I’m not working here I’m work-
ing at The University Center, Gordmans or leading a therapeutic writing workshop at a
local hospice. In my free time (Yes, I do have some!) I try to see a spend time with a
special guy, read, run, cook, travel and submit my own writing to various publications.
No, my apartment is not very clean.
FOOD ORDERS TO KILIAN CAMPUS
If a pizza or sub craving hits during your long hours of studying here at Kilian, having food delivered is no
problem. However, please make sure that you are waiting to pick up & pay for your delivery. The front desk
staff cannot leave the desk unattended to come and find you when your food arrives, and we don’t want to turn
away the delivery driver!
COPIES, FAXES & LAMINATING
Do you know that the front desk staff can make copies, send faxes and laminate pages for you?
-Copies = 10 cents per page (copies made front & back to save paper unless you specify otherwise)
-Faxes = $1.00 for the 1st page & 10 cents for each additional page (please have your cover sheet ready)
-Laminating = $1.00 per page
CONGRATULATIONS Robin Duncan, who teaches at Kilian, has completed and defended his PhD disserta-
tion in psychology with Capella University, and he passed! Please congratulate our
new Dr. Duncan when you next see him.

One morning I was talking with a student about some school choices she had
made. She was frustrated. She felt as though she had failed herself and defi-
nitely could have chose to make excuses but didn’t. I won’t go into specifics
but as a student I know there were times I also felt the same way. The excerpt
below are words I found comfort in. It gave me a clearer understanding of
what my journey was really about.—Christine
---Success in life is like climbing a mountain.
If you begin to climb and fall and find yourself where you began, it does not mean you have
failed, for you have overcome the fear that always kept you from beginning your climb to
the top and you have proved yourself strong enough to fall and get up. On the next try, you
may only get half way there and fall again.
Again this is not a sign of failure. This time you will know what it took to get halfway there. You will have a
better understanding than you did on your first climb of what you will need for your next attempt to reach the
top.
You may try again and again and fall each time. And each time pick yourself up and begin your ascent. With
each effort, think about the paths you have taken before and the results of those journeys. Do not be afraid to
chart a different course.
Open your mind, expand your horizons and let the lessons of your past experiences guide you.
As you begin to climb once again you know you may fall but now you know you have the determination to get
up once more and continue.
When you reach where you were on your last journey, past experience and wisdom will give you the persever-
ance to reach higher. Remember, each step brings you closer to the top.
You may find yourself clinging to the edge separating you from the summit and fall once more. Know you
have gone beyond any height previously reached.
On this journey you tasted the victory like you have never tasted it before. The effort you made this time let
you see that you can reach the top because even if just for a moment, you did touch it!
Then that day comes when you do reach the peak. As you stand there looking out at the peaks and valleys of
your life, you may feel as if something is still missing. You may look in all directions but just can’t see what it
is. You may think you had done everything right because there you are at the top of your mountain.
Then it will come to you.
You couldn’t find what was missing because you really didn’t know what you were looking for. You had put
together everything life had taught you to get where you now stood but there was one thing
you had yet to learn.
Ask yourself. “What was it you were in search of that gave you the courage, wisdom, perse-
verance and strength to attempt your climb to the top in the first place? What was it that
kept you going after falling so many times?
The answer is simple.
Your victory wasn’t about conquering the mountain and standing atop its peak,
it was about believing in yourself enough to take that first step to climb it.

mins Series

Bring History to Life! Volunteer Docents Wanted
The Siouxland Heritage Museums is looking to expand their docent program. A docent is
thoroughly trained on the cultural and historical collections of Senator R.F. Pettigrew and
Pettigrew Home and Museum. Docents are more than just a tour guide, they are wonder-
ful volunteers who bring fresh ideas and apply unique style to the public tours. Docents
will learn how to interpret the historic home for our many visitors who come to the mu-
seum to help them better understand life here in Sioux Falls in the 1910s and 20s. If you
have an interest and enjoy talking about period furnishings, decorative woodwork, archi-
tecture, historic restoration, art, social life in the 1920s, community history or any other
number of topics in the museum we would love to have you join our docent crew.
The Pettigrew Home and Museum was opened as Sioux Falls first free public museum in
1930, started by one of South Dakota’s first Senators Richard F. Pettigrew, collector,
worldwide traveler, and amateur archaeologist. The collection of artifacts range from pet-
rified wood, to Zuni pottery, and cultural statues to local paintings; the museum has a va-
riety to show our everyday public, but there is one section our staff takes great pride in
and that is the Historic Home. The Queen Anne house that was originally built in 1889 is
restored and furnished with items from the Pettigrew Collection and artifacts from the late
1910s and early 1920s. The house portion of the museum is only seen on guided tours,
which are not only led by staff but our knowledgeable docents.
If you are interested in volunteering your time and learning a little more about being a do-
cent please call the Siouxland Heritage Museums and talk to Julie Breu at 367-4210 ext.
3021. Or you can check out our website for information on other volunteer opportunities,
www.siouxlandmuseums.com.

RECYCLE CONTAINERS We are getting a lot of garbage in the blue recycle containers, liquids, paper,
gum and other unfit items. Please remind the new students only plastic and
cans that are empty can be put in the containers. Any containers that are not
empty of liquid should be put in the common trash cans.
Your help is appreciated.
STUDENT EMAILS Please be certain to access your student e-mail. This is important as more and
more information is being communicated that way from the various depart-
ments here at Kilian.
