To divert you either attach a hose to the urine spout of the diverter or use a Kildwick ‘Flex’ socket designed for this task

SOAK PITIf you have land, and local regulations allow, you can divert the urine into a soak pit. A typical design is shown below but the size will depend on the number of users. The idea behind the design is that bacteria develop on the surface of the stones which consume the urine leaving cleaner water to drain into the surrounding soil . For family use a pit 0.5m on each side should be sufficient

IN USEUsing a urine diverting compost toilet is quite straightforward. Men have to sit down to wee and women may need to sit a little further forward on the seat whilst urinating to help the separator to capture as much of the urine as possible. It doesn't generally matter if a little urine gets into the solids tank as the carbon cover will soak it up

We recommend adding about 2 inches of cover material to the solids tank before you start using it - this acts as a biological ‘sponge’ soaking up any excess liquid. Add a handful of additional cover for every poo afterwards.

How long the solids and liquids containers take to fill up depends on many factors. A ‘rule of thumb’ is that adults produce around 0.5L of poo per day (with sawdust cover but excluding toilet paper) and up to 2L if urine/day. Toilet paper can go in the solids container but is very bulky so better to dispose of separately.

INTRODUCTIONThank you for buying this urine diverter from Kildwick. This product has been designed and rigorously tested to efficiently separate urine from faeces in the toilet bowl. No diverter can be 100% effective but, in a well designed toilet, a little urine in the solids bucket will not matter.

The benefit of separating the urine from faeces is that the management of the ‘products’ is very much simpler, smell greatly reduced and there is a real opportunity to use both for short, and long-term fertilisation your garden.

MATERIALSAll Kildwick urine diverters are manufactured using glass fibre with polyester resins and gelcoats which offer unprecedented hardness and a shiny, easily cleaned, surface which will not absorb urine and will discolour very slowly compared to other materials.

Further, we add a special product called ‘SteriTouch’ into the resins and gelcoats which then gives the materials antibacterial properties - fully lab tested against e-coli and MRSA but known to be effective with a wide range of bacteria, fungus and mould. This is a non-leaching, non-organic, additive and won’t affect the composting properties and will last in excess of ten years.

INSTALLATIONThe Kildwick KOMPACT urine diverter sits under the toilet lid and is fixed with screws and cup-washers (supplied). A urine capture bottle sits directly beneath the spout and a bucket beneath the back of the toilet lid hole.

SPOUT DESIGNThe urine spout is designed to make plumbing simpler. When shipped, the outside of the spout can take most plumbing fittings designed for 32mm (ID) fixings and the inside of the spout can take 28mm (OD) pipes. If you trim the spout it not only gets wider on the outside, the inside is also tapered out allowing increased diameter internal fixings.

This urine diverter comes with an extendable one-year limited warranty against faults in manufacturing. This excludes the strainer which is classed as a ‘consumable’ item.

CLEANINGThe surface of the diverter quite different from conventional plastic and is able to retain it’s finish & colour for much longer as a result. To clean, just use a gentle bio-cleaner periodically and rinse with a hand water-spray.

If the surface gets any faecal contamination, just wipe it off before it dries. If it has dried just us dampen it for a short while (using a hand-pump water spray) and wipe off.

In use urine will leave a scale on the inside of bottles or pipes. This is quite normal and can be removed in bottles using bio-detergent or add stones and shaking then in water to break off the scale. Narrow pipes may block up so be prepared to either change the pipes periodically or use waterless urinal blocks to slow down scale build-up.

STRAINER MAINTENANCEThe strainer sits in the urine spout to prevent sawdust and other things from entering the urine pipe or containers. It is foil-wrapped plastic and can lose the foil with general use and cleaning and so is classed as a ‘consumable’ and can easily be replaced

To prevent the strainer dropping into the solids tank it can be ‘tacked’ on with two small blobs of silicon so that it is easily removed & replaced if it looses its foil. You can get new strainers from the Kildwick online store.
