On August 18, 1846, three months after the U.S. declaration of war with Mexico, U.S. General Stephen Kearny and his army marched into and took possession of Santa Fe and New Mexico. In 1848, the war with Mexico ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Two years later, on September 9, 1850, the U.S. Congress passed an Organic Act, which created the Territory of New Mexico and authorized its civil government.
