Queenstown Wanaka FiordlandYour one-stop family guide to

New Zealand’s stunning Southern Lakes region.

Queenstown and Arrowtown – with its well-deserved reputation as NZ's Adventure Capital you’ll never run out of things to do in Queenstown but you may run out of time! With breathtaking scenery, activities and festivals, cafés and restaurants, shopping and wineries, this lakeside alpine resort rates as one of the world’s top destinations for all ages and seasons. Just 19 km away, the old-world ambience of Arrowtown, on the bank of the once gold-laden Arrow River, is also a must-visit, offering accommodation, restaurants and activities.

Wanaka and Lake Hawea – a perfect year-round destination with valleys, mountains and glaciers on its doorstep. Wanaka offers stunning scenery, fabulous dining, festivals and family fun with a laid-back feel. Activities include jet boating, paintball, kids’ climbing and the famous Puzzling World, as well as family bike or walking tracks. Otherwise spend a day by the lake. Wanaka's beaches offer shallow swimming, picnic areas and lots of friendly families to meet! Just ten minutes away Lake Hawea is another idyllic holiday spot waiting for you to discover it!

Fiordland and Te Anau – the lakeside town of Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park with the rugged wonders of Milford and Doubtful Sounds just a short trip away. Te Anau, with plenty of accommodation options and great restaurants, offers fun family activities including cruises, biking, jet boating, hiking tours and horse riding. It’s also the perfect base from which to explore the glowworm caves, nearby Lake Manapouri and New Zealand's great walks; the Milford Track, Kepler Track and Routeburn Track.

What’s a jet boat?Unlike a conventional propeller-driven boat, a jet boat utilises an internal propeller (impeller), drawing water up through an inlet in the bottom of the boat and driving it with great force through a moveable nozzle at the rear. This allows the jet boat to travel in water only inches deep, and it is so manoeuvrable it can perform a 360⁰ turn on the spot.

The jet boat’s uses worldwide vary from passenger ferries to military and coastguard craft. Yet it was invented right here in the ‘50s by Bill ‘Mad Irishman’ Hamilton, a farmer and self-taught engineer. He devised it as a means of getting around his Canterbury farm via shallow rivers without the boat's propeller hitting rocks.

Just over a decade later the world’s first tourist jet boat operation commenced in Queenstown.

THEN NOW

KJET Ideal for all ages You can step into a big yellow KJet every hour at the Main Town Pier, Queenstown. Family-friendly bike ridesQueenstown and Arrowtown have never been so well set up for family bike tracks as they are these days. If you don’t have your own you can hire bikes for the family in Queenstown or Arrowtown. Bike hire comes with helmets and friendly advice on local bike rides to suit your family’s ability.

THE QUEENSTOWN TRAILA new initiative, the 100km Queenstown Trail combines a series of biking/walking trails within the Wakatipu Basin, incorporating the wine area of Gibbston Valley, the goldmining town of Arrowtown, Lake Hayes, Frankton and Queenstown. Note: Arrowtown trails are listed on page 31.

Family Bike Rides 25

QUEENSTOWN GARDENSThe walk/bike path runs from the entrance at the lakeshore around the perimeter of the gardens. It’s totally flat, easy, and very scenic, with the lake on one side and gardens on the other. Easy – 30mins

FRANKTON ARM TRACKThis is a good add-on to the Queenstown Gardens track, starting a few minutes’ ride away, at the end of Park Street. Queenstown’s easiest and most popular walk or bike track, it’s about 6km to Frankton Beach; a great picnic or swim spot. Easy – 45mins

KELVIN HEIGHTS TRACK AND LOOPRecently upgraded, this is a gorgeous track that’s perfect for all ages. Park at Bayview Road where there’s a toilet and playground. Take the left track towards the golf course for a loop ride. (Includes a short, trickier section that can be walked if not confident.) Turn right from Bayview Road for a well-graded, easy lakeside track.Either direction is 30–40 mins return or do both for a good 1 to 1½ hour ride. (Times based on riders aged 10 years and up).

SKYLINE GONDOLA MOUNTAIN BIKINGPop your bikes on the Skyline Gondola and expore the Queenstown Bike Park's great downhill bike tracks back into town. There are 12 trails and over 30km of track. The Skyline offer season or day passes, or you can just pay for one gondola ride + bike.Kidz Go highly recommends the 6km long Hammys Track – it's a beginners' run – wide single track with few obstacles and a more gradual descent. This is heaps of fun, recommended for 8 years and up.

ROUND THE MOUNTAINSTake the TSS Earnslaw to Walter Peak for a great biking day out. The track follows the lakeshore before heading inland. The entire circuit takes several days, so just ride for as long as you feel like before heading back to Walter Peak Sheep Station.

(Note: Outside Sports can organise a bike hire/steamship combo, or even a guided day excursion for this trip.)

JARDINES TO JACKS POINTThis well-graded, non-technical track heads out of town, alongside the lake to Jacks Point (where there’s a café and lunch spot). A few short, grunty sections make this more enjoyable for ages 10 years and over, of at least moderate fitness. Stunning lake views all the way along the track. Med – 1 hour

JARDINES MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK, KELVIN HEIGHTSPerfect for kids and adults to improve your confidence and skills and have a play! There’s a BMX

pump track circuit plus longer bike courses from 2–6km. Follow the sign on the right to the Jacks Point track. Playground, toilets and picnic area nearby.

OUR FAVOURITE HARDER RIDESMACETOWNFor the more adventurous, head out from Arrowtown on the 4WD track towards Macetown. It’s hilly in parts, with lots of river crossings and steep drop offs, but the track itself is wide and non-technical. Allow a half to full day if going all the way, (about 3 hours solid riding return, if experienced and fit) or take a Southern Explorer 4WD tour one way, and bike back!

TWELVE MILE DELTA TO BOB’S COVEThis undulating, intermediate grade single track runs below the Glenorchy Road, starting from Twelve Mile Delta, 10km from Queenstown. Suitable for teens and adults with some experience. Lots of steep ups and downs as well as long, flat sections. Med – 1 hour

Glenorchy 27

GlenorchyGlenorchy sits at the northern tip of Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by mountains, glacier-fed rivers and beech forest. It’s the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and the starting point for multi-day treks, including the famous Routeburn Walk. With only 200 locals and Mount Aspiring National Park on its doorstep, this really is a slice of paradise!

Getting to Glenorchy The stunning 45km lakeside drive offers breathtaking views of Lake Wakatipu, hanging valleys and sheer mountains. Make sure you stop at the Bennetts Bluff Lookout (on the left, 25kms from Queenstown) for an amazing view of the head of the lake and an excellent photo opportunity.Eating GY Café is our most popular choice, with sunny gardens and superb food. It has a great reputation and oozes charm and style. Foxy’s Café at Glenorchy Lodge, or the Glenorchy Hotel are both just across the road, also fully-licensed and open all day.Accommodation Range of accommodation includes backpacker and budget lodge-style, holiday homes, motel accommodation and Kinloch YHA.

ACTIVITIESHorse riding Spectacular location for a horse ride; tours suitable for families and complete beginners through to advanced. Dart River Jet Wilderness Safari Jet boat through the breathtaking scenery of Mt Aspiring National Park. Combine with a Funyak trip for a real family adventure! See listing p11. Other activitiesGlenorchy is a great place to wander around, with several picnic/BBQ spots, an adventure playground, pool and skateboard/bike park right by the lake.

WALKSLagoon Loop Easy – 1 hourFacing the lake and Glenorchy Jetty, follow the path to your right – it leads to a boardwalk skirting the lagoon. Stunning views and lots of birdlife, including black swans.

Lake Sylvan Easy – 45 min returnDriving from Glenorchy, follow the Routeburn road and turn right towards the Routeburn Track. The Lake Sylvan turn-off is well-marked and the pleasant bush walk starts with a swing bridge and finishes at a hidden lake.

Glenorchy Battery Moderate – 45 min each wayShort, steep climb to great views and relics of the goldmining era. Track starts from Whakaari Conservation Area carpark, 2km before you get to Glenorchy.

Routeburn Track beginning ModerateThis track takes 2–3 days to complete but why not walk along it for a while and explore? Starts at the end of the Routeburn Road. The first track hut is at Routeburn Flats and takes about 2 hrs one way (8km). The most stunning mountain top views are from the Routeburn Falls hut, about 3 hours one way (11km) with the final hour or so being a steady climb. Well worth it if you have the energy.

THEN

Only 19km from Queenstown, Arrowtown was born of the 1862 goldrush and is a step back in time with tree-lined streets, old miners’ cottages and a main street reminiscent of a ‘Wild West’ movie.

The Arrow River, with the fascinating Chinese Settlement on its bank, was at one time worked by thousands of goldseekers who came from around the world to toil in the Arrow River for gold and good fortune.

Cancan girls: Arrowtown Autumn Festival

Page 29: Kidz Go Southern Lakes :: summer 2013

Arrowtown 29

Although Arrowtown has grown over the years it’s lost none of its appeal. The town offers restaurants and cafés, varied shopping, boutique cinema, family tours, costume photography, bike hire and a variety of accommodation.

The Chinese Settlement In 1865 the Chinese were invited to come and mine the goldfields around the Arrow Gorge. They built and lived in around 20 huts that now offer one of the region’s most vivid insights into life during the goldrush.

The Arrow River Gold is discovered in the river every year and some recently found nuggets are on display in Arrowtown. Why not hire a goldpan from Lakes District Museum or Dudley's Cottage and try your luck? Otherwise the Arrow River is a popular spot with easy walking/biking tracks alongside and a skateboard/bike park on its bank.

Accommodation Family-friendly choices in and around Arrowtown include Arrowfield Apartments, Millbrook Resort, Redlands Farm and Willowbank. See page 70 for more on family accommodation.

DUDLEYS COTTAGEHistoric Dudley's Cottage is a great venue for families. In the sunny, spacious garden there is a long goldpanning trough where children love to experience panning for gold, just like in the old days! Our friendly staff will show you and the kids what to do and then ... go for gold! Pay dirt is guaranteed and you even get to take away your own gold. Gold pans are also available for hire or purchase if you want to extend your search to the nearby shallows of the Arrow River. Unless otherwise stated, estimated times are for a family group, walking not biking.

Arrowtown Millennium Track Easy – 1 hour rtnStart from the carpark in Ramshaw Lane. Follow the Arrow River to the outskirts of Arrowtown. Cross the bridge and return most of the way along the other side, crossing a bridge once more and finishing in the carpark. Mountain Biking: a great family track. Buggy-friendly.

Lake Hayes Track Easy – 2 hour loopThis easy, scenic walk (just 2km from Arrowtown) takes you right round Lake Hayes on a gravel path/boardwalk. Mostly flat, although there are some short climbs. The track has a slight drop-off at some points along the lake’s far side, so keep small children with you. Look out for the NZ native pukeko (Purple Swamphen). Mountain Biking: a great family track. Buggy-friendly.

Macetown – Mountain Bike Med / Hard 2–3 hour one way (biking) The track to Macetown is wide 4WD all the way, so there is nothing technical for bike riders. There are a few hills so fitness is required. There are also LOTS of river crossings — generally they're rideable if you're game to give them a try on your bike! This ride is superb — an unforgettable day out finishing in the old goldmining 'ghost town', Macetown. If any or all of you only want to tackle one-way, contact Adin at Southern Explorer — he specialises in 4WD/bike ride excursions to Macetown. See opposite page for details.Mountain Biking: for older children.

Gibbston River Trail Med–2 hours one way Park at the AJ Hackett Bungy Bridge and follow the walking/biking track to Peregrine Winery (approx 6km) There's a café (in Kawarau Bungy Centre) at one end and winetasting at the other, with a wide, undulating track and fantastic Kawarau River views in between. A 2.7km loop near Peregrine takes you onto the Wentworth Track with bridge-crossings and more stunning river views. Note: the Wentworth Track section has steep, single track and is not suited to family bikers). Mountain Biking: for older children. Buggy-friendly.

Bush Creek Trail Easy – 1 hour return Start by the Trails Notice Board at Butlers Green and walk diagonally to your left to cross a small footbridge over Bush Creek. Then turn left and continue up the road until you walk over the irrigation pipe and through a sheep gate. The trail winds gently alongside Bush Creek. Look out for stone walls in the centre of the river. These were reportedly built by Chinese miners in an effort to divert the water from one side to the other. They then worked the dry side, always profitably. After 15 minutes, the trail will lead up over a footbridge where the Big Hill and Sawpit Gully trails start. Veer left at this point and continue along Bush Creek to the old water supply intake (1881). To return, retrace your steps back to Arrowtown.

Sawpit Gully Trail Med/Hard 2-3 hour loop This is a great loop with a variety of scenery. The easier way to walk is to follow the Arrow River Trail first in an anticlockwise direction. You sidle high above the river before you reach the turn off to Sawpit Gully. Once in Sawpit Gully itself parts of a water race are followed and piles of stone gold mining tailings are evident near the creek. Look out for the remains of an old stone hut on your right on a grassy terrace just before you begin to climb out of Sawpit Gully. Up the hill you meet the Big Hill Trail at Eichardt’s Flat and walk down towards Arrowtown with Lake Hayes in full view. Note: private farmland; strictly no dogs or mountain bikes.

Manse Road Walkway Easy 20 – mins each way This new walkway running beside the road allows users to walk/bike to or from Manse Road, Arrowfield Apartments or Millbrook Resort into Arrowtown. You can also divert off the trail to the Chinese Village and onto Arrowtown Millennium Walkway or Bush Creek.Mountain Biking: a great family track. Buggy-friendly.

The Chinese Settlement Easy 30 minsStart from Dudley's Cottage, where you can enjoy lunch or have a go at goldpanning, then wander through the restored cottages built by the Chinese during the goldrush of the 1860s. Each hut is different and you can go inside and explore. There are interpretive panels so you can discover who lived in the huts and get a feel for what life was like for the Chinese immigrants during the goldrush.

32 Kingston

All Aboard to Kingston

A “WHISTLE STOP” HISTORY TOUR Before the railway was built, getting to Queenstown was quite an adventure — the easiest way was to take a horse-drawn cart from the south followed by a trip on a small boat. Once the train line was completed, the Kingston Flyer took passengers between Kingston and Gore from 1878 through to the mid 1950s. It provided a vital link to the Wakatipu goldfields by meeting up with the Earnslaw at Kingston Wharf. Nowadays, this restored, vintage steam train takes passengers on a 90 minute scenic journey back to a time of gold, steam, earth and dreams. Experience for yourself the magnificent mountain scenery from the seven vintage carriages. Refreshments are available throughout the journey in the buffet car. The staff are great with kids – they’re welcome to explore the train, ask lots of questions and check out the loco. There are photo opportunities galore and a favourite for everyone is watching how the loco turns around at the 14km mark for its return journey.

FRIENDS OF THE FLYER Friends of the Flyer concession cards are available for purchase on the web site and at the ticket office. The purchase price of $65 gives you a 10 trip concession card with 50% discount on all adult and child fares. Proceeds go to the restoration of the Kingston Flyer. The concession cards can also be used by family and friends.

OTHER KINGSTON ACTIVITIES The township is a great spot for beach and lakefront activities including picnic and BBQ areas, playground and toilets. You’ll also find excellent fishing, a golf course, bowling green, tennis courts, restaurant, The Flyer café and bar.

WALKS There are a number of well-marked walks ranging from ½ hour to 3 hours, easy to medium, starting from the furthest point of the beach, past the Kingston Flyer Railway Station.

GETTING TO KINGSTON Drive south out of Queenstown (State Highway 6) and follow the signs to Milford Sound. The drive takes approximately 45 minutes and follows Lake Wakatipu for most of the trip. There are viewpoints and rest stops along the way. A highlight of the Queenstown to Kingston road is the Devil’s Staircase, a particularly windy stretch of road with panoramic views both up and down the lake. If you don't have your own transport, the Kingston Flyer run a shuttle service to and from Queenstown (costs apply, please ring for details.)

Exploring Central Otago

Queenstown and Wanaka are right on the doorstep of Central Otago and just a 45 minute drive from either town brings you to a spectacular and remote region – a land of wild and rugged views, golden tussocked high country and weird rock formations, alluring rivers, quiet roads and everywhere relics of the gold rush.Central Otago covers the land between Dunedin, on the East Coast, and the Southern Lakes. There are only two main routes that traverse this old goldmining landscape, at least for driving – two alternatives are hopping on your bike and riding the popular Otago Central Rail Trail (150km) or retracing the historic journey from Dunedin to the Goldfields on horseback in the annual Cavalcade.

How the Kiwi Lost His WingsThe New Zealand Mãori LegendOne day Tanemahuta, God of the forests, noticed that the trees were starting to droop. The bugs from the forest floor were eating them and with nothing to scare them off the trees were sickening fast.

He talked to his brother, Tanehokahoka, God of the birds. If the trees died then the birds would have no home. Tanehokahoka gathered all the birds together.

"Something is eating the trees", he said, " I need one of you to come down and live on the forest floor so that the trees can be saved and you can have a home. Who will come?" Not a bird spoke. Not a feather rustled.

Tanehokahoka turned to Tui saying, "Tui, will you come down?" Tui looked up at the bright sunlight filtering through treetops then down at the cold, dark earth of the forest floor. He shuddered. "I would", he replied, "but I'm afraid of the dark."

Tanehokahoka turned next to Pukeko saying, "Pukeko, will you come down from the forest roof?" Pukeko looked at the bright sunlight filtering through the treetops then down at

the cold, damp earth. He shuddered. "I would", he replied, "but I don't like to get my feet wet".

Tanehokahoka turned to Kiwi. "E Kiwi" he said, "will you come down from the forest roof?" Kiwi looked down at that cold, forbidding forest floor. "I will" he spoke.

The brother Gods were filled with joy and hope, but they felt they should warn the brave kiwi of what would happen.

"E Kiwi, do you realise that if you do this you will have to grow thick, strong legs so that you can rip apart the logs on the ground and that your beautiful, coloured feathers and wings will drop off so that you will never be able to return to the tree tops. You will never see the light of day again. Will you still come?" Kiwi took one last look at his brothers and at the brilliant sunlight "I will".

Then Tanehokahoka turned to the other birds and said,

"Tui, because you were too scared to come down from the forest roof, you will wear two white feathers at your throat as the mark of a coward. Pukeko, because you didn't want to get your feet wet, you will live forever in the swamp. But you, Kiwi, because of your great sacrifice, you will become the most well-known and loved bird of them all."

Did you know?* the kiwi, New Zealand's national emblem, is a flightless bird with hair-like feathers and a long, slender bill which it uses to pull worms and insects out of the ground.

* the kiwi is nocturnal, so it is active only at night, in forest areas.

* the kiwi is only found in New Zealand. There are five species: little spotted, great spotted, brown, rowi and tokoeka.

* only 10% of kiwi chicks make it to six months and fewer than 5% reach adulthood.

* all species, apart from the little spotted, are in gradual or critical decline.

* the Kiwi Birdlife Park in Queenstown is devoted to conservation and rehabilitation of the kiwi and other native birds.

The Kiwi Birdlife Park is more than a tourist attraction – they assist the Department of Conservation with recovery efforts for, amongst others, brown kiwi, tuatara, brown teal, kea, weka, blue duck and black stilt.

Captive breeding programs together with rehabilitation and ultimately release into natural habitat are the key goals of the park's programs.

Recent conservation highlights at the park include assisting re-introduction of a locally-extinct species, the brown teal, into the Arthur Valley, near Milford Sound. Brown teal had been functionally extinct for the past few decades in the area, prior to Department of Conservation re-introduction in 2009.

Kiwi ConservationToday you can explore the five acres of park,

home to over twenty species of protected New Zealand birds and reptiles. We hold brown kiwi both for advocacy as well as taking part in the national breed-for-release program. Our most recent release was of Tuku, a chick hatched in December 2011, that was released into Maungataniwha sanctuary in May 2012. We hope to breed more kiwi for release this summer!

As the park is self-funded, your visit and contribution are vital to their efforts over the last 26 years to ensure that our rare and beautiful native birds aren't lost forever. See more on visiting the Kiwi Birdlife Park on page 17.

This chick, Tuku, was born in the park and released into the wild when she reached 1kg

The Legend of Lake Wakatipu 43 Q

www.KidzGo.co.nz

The Legend of our Breathing LakeA long time ago in the South of Aotearoa there lived a Măori chief. He had a fine looking daughter with glossy black hair and velvety brown eyes. The warrior, Matakauri, had fallen in love with her. But the Chief told Matakauri to stay away – he wasn’t good enough for her. The Chief’s daughter, Manata, was sorry she was not allowed to be with her love. Then, one morning, it was noticed that Manata was missing from her bed.

Everyone searched everywhere they could think of, but found nothing. Then, one of the tribes people called, “over here!” Everyone rushed to the woodland he had been searching, and there, in the mud, was a footprint bigger than a house. “I remember the ground shaking in the night,” cried one man. “I thought it was an earthquake.”

But everyone knew who owned the footprint – the mighty and feared giant, Matau. Matau was bigger than all the houses in the village put together. He was bigger than a mountain, and what was more, he had a terrible temper. So when the Chief said “who is going to rescue my beloved daughter?” everyone looked down, even the biggest, strongest warriors in the tribe. “Whoever rescues Manata may marry her” the Chief tried in desperation.

Still, no one moved. No one believed you could come back from a fight with a giant. However, one warrior was missing. While the Chief had been pleading with his

men, Matakauri was already packing his bags.

Off he went with determination in his stride,

heading for Matau’s lair. Suddenly, there he

was, fast asleep, and Manata was tied to his body by ropes made from nearby bushes. Her eyes lit up as she caught sight of her rescuer, but at the same time she cautioned him. “Be careful. If

the wind changes he’ll wake up.

You’ll be killed!” she whispered.

Matakauri was not to be put off. He crept up to the mountain of snoring flesh and grasped one of the ropes tied to his love. “You’re free!” he cried recklessly, as he swung his trusty axe, made from the finest greenstone. The axe did not make one mark on the rope. Again and again he swung it, but to no avail.

Manata wept. “Go back,” she pleaded, “it’s useless!” But then a strange thing happened. The girl’s tears fell onto the rope and as they touched it the rope melted and broke away.Matakauri gasped in delight and gathered up Manata. The pair ran home to safety and when Manata’s father saw, he proclaimed the two must be married.

Still, to make sure Manata stayed safe, Matakauri had to destroy Matau once and for all. Although he explained that while the northwest wind blew the giant would sleep, once more not one man stepped forward to help.

So Matakauri was alone again, creeping up to the giant. Matau was curled up like a child, his enormous head and feet resting on mountain tops many miles apart. His very snore rumbled across the valley like an earthquake.

Quietly Matakauri started gathering armfuls of flax and dried wood. It took many days to pile the scrub all around the huge body, but still Matau slept. Then, just before the wind seemed to be changing Matakauri lit the fire. He ran along the giant, from arm to leg, across hills and around stomach until it seemed the world was ablaze and Matau was devoured by the flames.

The flames were so hot and so fierce that they burned a hole in the ground where the giant had been and what's more, they melted all the snow on the mountain tops.

The streams swelled and the water flowed into the newly made hole, filling it right up until it became the Lake Wakatipu we know today. The water still lies in the giant shape hole that Matau left, when his head was up in Glenorchy, his knees tucked up in Frankton, and his feet all the way down in Kingston.

But there’s one strange thing. Legend has it you can never destroy a giant’s heart. Sure enough, the heart of Matau, deep in the lake, beats on and the waters of Lake Wakatipu rise and fall whilst Matau still sleeps.

The Beating HeartThere's a tiny island that sits off the far shore of the lake, near the base of Cecil Peak. It's only visible from some parts of Queenstown or from close up, on the lake itself. It's known as Hidden Island, and known to some as the heart of Matau the giant...

About our lake... did you know that some parts of Lake Wakatipu are over 1km deep and that it's 82km in length? The temperature of the water varies by only a few degrees from winter to summer. Wakatipu is NZ's longest lake and the third largest (after Taupo and Te Anau). But, the strangest fact of all is that the lake rises and falls by 12cm every 5 minutes. Here's one explanation. Wakatipu (măori) ~ 1. trough of the giant 2. hole of the giant

Lake Hawea Walks & Family BikingGLADSTONE TRACK Easy 3 hours returnHead down any street in Lake Hawea towards the lake and you can find a beach, picnic spot and the Hawea Lakefront Track, also called Gladstone Track. Starting from the end of Flora Dora Parade you head alongside the lake on gently undulating track, past The Esplanade and Scotts Beach, ending at Johns Creek; an attractive picnic and swimming area. Suitable for walking or biking – around an hour return on bikes (with no stops).

BOTTOM BAY Easy 20 mins returnNorth of Lake Hawea, just off the main highway, this is a good rest stop – it's an easy and pleasant 10 minutes walk from the car to this attractive little bay with an apt name!

HAWEA RIVER TRACK Easy/Med – 4 hours returnAn easy, well-formed 10km track that follows the Hawea River to Albert Town. Slightly undulating but overall very easy walking and biking for all ages.

TIMARU RIVER Follow the unsealed road along the east side of Lake Hawea (not suitable for campervans) to access the area's tramping tracks (harder, longer walks). A good destination is Timaru River – it's a gorgeous spot about 9km along this road. From here you can walk up to Junction Hut (about 3 hours return, hard and with river crossings so not suitable after heavy rain) or explore the Timarua River Loop Track (4–5 hours, hard and with river crossings so not suitable after heavy rain).Note: these tracks are remote and require suitable clothing and footwear. Take food and water. Some fitness required and not suitable for younger children.

DINGLE BURN PENINSULA TRACK 6–8 hrs returnStarting 8km further on from Timaru Creek this track offers fantastic lake and valley views, and on a clear day you can see across to Mt Aspiring. The track is flat at first, before climbing up to Turihuka Conservation area at the mouth of the Dingle Burn River. This is a long day, but worth exploring the start of the track on a short walk if you're with the family.

NZ BACKCOUNTRY SADDLE EXPEDITIONSAn ‘up close and personal’ animal experience. A unique horse trekking adventure on Appaloosa (spotted) horses outfitted with western saddles (easy to hang onto). From our bustling stableyard of farm animals (which the kids can pat) we will take you riding high with spectacular views, down to splashing through the valley streams. Each ride is adjusted to the age, experience and ability of the rider. Safety helmets supplied. Bookings essential. WANAKA LAKESIDE TRACKSYou can bike or walk all the way from Glendhu Bay to Hawea via Wanaka township, along gorgeous, well-formed and very scenic tracks. Choose a section of track (some are completely flat and others more challenging), take a family walk or bike ride, and dip down into one of the hundreds of beautiful coves and picnic spots along the way. Note: times are estimated walking times with children.

Wanaka Lakefront to Glendhu BayMillennium Track to Waterfall Creek Carpark Easy – 2 hours returnStarting from town, follow the walking track with the lake on your right. This track is perfect with littlies, completely flat and quite wide. Buggy friendly.Waterfall Creek Carpark to Glendhu Bay Part I: Med – 2 hours return Part II: Med/Hard – 3 hours returnThe first section is more undulating as you follow the lake round to a secluded bay. Mountain bikers will find this just slightly harder going but not technical and definitely still great for families. You reach a turn off where you can choose to dip down to the bay, or follow the track to Glendhu Bay. From here the track becomes more technical in places with several steep undulations. The views are stunning as you climb above the lake, then dip down to the shore.

Wanaka Lakefront to Lake HaweaWanaka Lakefront to Lake Outlet Easy – 3 hours returnThis flat and wide track skirts the marina and then follows around the back of the yacht club and continues to Eely Point. Continue along the beach to Bremner Bay and you’ll see the start of the Clutha River – Lake Wanaka’s outlet. Finish up at the Outlet near the campground – a great picnic spot.Lake Outlet to Albert Town Easy/Med – 2 hours returnThis is one of our favourite sections simply because the Clutha river is so gorgeous and suddenly such different scenery from the lake. Parking right at the start of the track near the Lake Outlet Holiday Park along Anderson Road. The track is slightly more narrow and undulating but certainly fine for bikers of all ages. Albert Town to Lake Hawea Easy/Med – 4 hours returnAn easy, well-formed 10km track that follows the Hawea River to Lake Hawea. Slightly undulating but overall very easy walking and biking for all ages.

MOUNT IRON TRACK Moderate – 1½ hrs loopMount Iron is a glacier-carved hill, visible from anywhere in Wanaka. Worth the climb, the summit provides panoramic views. The access track is well signposted 2km from Wanaka, near Puzzling World, along State Highway 6. Not suitable for bikes.

ROB ROY TRACK Moderate – 3-4 hours returnStart from the Raspberry Flat carpark, an hour’s drive from Wanaka on the Glendhu Bay Road. Fifteen minute flat walk to a swing bridge then climb to the head of the valley and see great

views of Rob Roy Glacier. Not suitable for bikes.

DIAMOND LAKE ROCKY MOUNTAIN WALKING TRACK Hard – 1½–3 hrs25 mins drive west of Wanaka, along the Mount Aspiring Road. The entire track takes around 3 hours return and the views from the summit are stunning. For a shorter walk take the return track to the Lake Wanaka viewpoint. Not suitable for bikes. Note: the track is steep and uneven in parts – not suited to poor weather conditions.

THE PLANTATION AND STICKY FORESTNear the Outlet Motor Camp you’ll find a pine forest with a network of well-built and maintained single

tracks. The tracks are graded and suitable for young teens and up, with some experience.LISMORE DIRT PARK (LDP)An awesome jumps park with some hair-raising challenges – come and hang out and watch the experts, or

get the hang of bike tricks on some of the smaller jumps. Off Plantation Road.

Te Anau

The name Te Anau is of Mâori origin (Te Ana-au), meaning ‘rushing waters in a cave’ although Te Anau’s actual caves were lost in Mâori legend until being rediscovered by a European explorer in the 1940s. At 12,000 years old, they are relatively young and are still being formed by water action. These days they’re famous for the glowworm grotto deep inside which you can explore with Real Journeys (see more information on facing page). Te Anau is a perfect place to ‘stay and play’ for a few days while exploring Fiordland National Park. Situated on the shore of Lake Te Anau only two hours’ drive from Queenstown, this lively and pretty lakeside community bustles with cafés, shops and accommodation. Local activities include jet boating, visiting the magical world of the glowworm caves, taking a cruise on the gorgeous Lake Te Anau, horse riding, quad biking plus numerous family-friendly walking and biking tracks. If you want to walk further afield you'll find the famous Milford, Kepler and Routeburn multi-day tracks depart from here, while the most famous activity of all is a visit to Milford or Doubtful Sounds — both are just an easy day trip away.www.KidzGo.co.nz

60 FiordlandF

FiordlandNamed for the 14 fiords that carve into its western coastline, Fiordland is the work of over 500 million years of constant sculpting. Fiordland contains some of the most dramatic scenery in the world, including Milford and Doubtful Sounds and the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler Great Walks.

At 12,000 square kilometres, Fiordland is New Zealand’s largest National Park and has been designated a World Heritage Area for its unique landscapes.

ManapouriOriginally called Roto-au (the rainy lake) by early Maori and then Moturau (many islands), Lake Manapouri (Lake of the Sorrowing Heart) is the second deepest in New Zealand and the gateway to Doubtful Sound. Dotted with over 30 small islands, covered in native bush and accessible by boat, it also has the enviable reputation as NZ's prettiest lake. Manapouri township is a 20 minute drive from Te Anau and you'll find a variety of accommodation, café, and general store.

Family Walk & Bike Tracks Te Anau – Control GatesFollow the lakefront path with the lake on your right to walk around to the start of the Kepler Track, passing the DOC centre and the Te Anau Wildlife Centre. Approx 30 mins easy walk each way.

Te Anau Lakefront TrackFollow the same lakeside path as above in the other direction, with the lake on your left. The path is wider and ideal for family biking (the above track has a lot of walkers so stick to this one with the bikes). Fantastic views of the lake and mountains and endless beaches to stop and play at. The track loops round and back into town via the main highway.

Ivon Wilson ParkAttractive 35 hectare park with lots of walking tracks and Lake Henry in the middle – the lake, stocked with brook trout, has been developed as a children’s fishery.Mountain Biking: a new addition to the park is a dedicated mountain bike park with loop tracks of around 8.5kms. There are green (beginner), blue and black trails to follow, so this is ideal and fun for all levels of biker. (See map p65)

Key SummitA more strenuous outing, this walk departs from the Te Anau – Milford Road and takes you onto the Routeburn Track. It’s about 3–4 hours return and reasonable fitness is required. If you haven’t got transport, contact Tracknet for daily shuttle service to and from this hike (see p61).

Places of InterestMirror Lakes A five-minute walk alongside these pools is well worth it on a still day – the reflections are quite stunning.Pop's View Lookout A viewing platform looks down over the Hollyford Valley – one of the most spectacular panoramas of the drive.Homer Tunnel This incredible feat of workmanship cuts 1200 metres through the Darren Mountains. Both the entrance and exit to the tunnel provide awe-inspiring views. The Chasm A 20-minute return bush walk; the Chasm itself, with its huge volume of water pounding over incredible rock formations, is mesmerising.

About Milford Sound (Piopiotahe)First settled in 1877, the original route to Milford weaved around the Darran Mountains and over the McKinnon Pass. Now known as the Milford Track (approx. 52km long), it was the only way to enter Milford other than via the sea. Milford Sound is 16kms long and it rains approximately 180 days a year, with an average annual rainfall of over 6½ metres!

Drive TimesQueenstown to Milford Sound 4½ hours Te Anau to Milford Sound 2½ hoursWanaka to Milford Sound 5½ hours

Coaching or driving both ways from Queenstown makes for a 12 hour day, so you may want to break up the journey in Te Anau. Real Journeys also run overnight cruises (mid Sept–May) with family cabins available.

Trip OptionsCoach-Cruise-Coach The road to Milford Sound is one of the most stunning in NZ. There is nothing quite as awe-inspiring as the approach to the Homer Tunnel and there are plenty of viewpoints along the way.

Fly-Cruise-Fly Take a 30 to 40 minute flight over glaciers, lakes and waterfalls. Weather dependent so book early to avoid missing out. Flights depart Queenstown, Wanaka and Te Anau.

Fly-Cruise-Coach or Coach-Cruise-Fly This is the ultimate trip! It's around 7½ hours return from Queenstown. Take the coach first as it only gives commentary and photo stops on the journey in.

Drive Yourself See map this page for this spectacular 120km stretch of road. Cruises can be purchased before you leave, in Te Anau, or when you get to Milford Sound.

Milford SoundDescribed by Rudyard Kipling as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’, Milford Sound is one of the jewels in the Fiordland crown. It’s actually a fiord – created by rivers of glacial ice and flanked on both sides by sheer rock face, rising up to awe-inspiring heights. An experience on the Sound is enhanced by the abundance of wildlife; fur seals, rare Fiordland crested penguins and bottlenose dolphins. Dolphins frequently lead the cruise boats, playing in the bow waves.

Homer Tunnel – did you know?i The Homer Tunnel is a road tunnel in Fiordland linking Milford Sound to Te Anau and Queenstown.i Milford Sound was inaccessible by road until 1953 when the Homer Tunnel was completed. The tunnel through the Darran Mountain Range took over 20 years to build.i The tunnel, at 945 metres above sea level, is 1.2km long and has a steep gradient down towards Milford Sound.i In 2003 the Homer Nude Tunnel run was introduced. Each year on 1st April, the race involves nearly a hundred keen competitors racing naked through the tunnel!

Wilmot Pass

The Route to Doubtful Sound

Doubtful SoundCaptain Cook sighted Doubtful Sound on his first voyage to NZ in 1770. He called it Doubtful Harbour because he was doubtful about whether he would be able to turn around and exit back to sea. In fact Doubtful Sound is a staggering 10 times bigger than Milford Sound and is home to fur seals, Fiordland crested penguins and dolphins.

The journey to Dountful Sound is an experience in itself, crossing Lake Manapouri to the West Arm and the amazing underground, hydro-electric powerstation, then over Wilmot Pass and finally down to the shores of Doubtful Sound.

REAL JOURNEYS DOUBTFUL SOUND DAYTIME CRUISESWhen you discover Doubtful Sound with us you will be struck by its silence, broken only by birdsong or the rushing of a distant waterfall. A nugget of Southern Lakes historyIn 1862 gold was discovered in the Arrow River and this year we celebrate 150 years since the miners came from around the world in search of gold and fortune.

Here’s how it all began… Way back, before white men had even set foot on Aotearoa the Mãori lived in tribes around the South Island. They’d come through the area known today as the Southern Lakes on their journeys to the coast, hunting Moa and searching for pounamu (greenstone) for their tools and weapons.

Then one day just over 150 years ago, before there was one road, house or boat, two tired travellers emerged at a point high above the present day Arrowtown. The Europeans had come searching for land to settle and use for agriculture and pasturing sheep. The view that greeted them must have taken their breath away. William Rees and Nicholas von Tunzelmann gazed upon a broad valley, rich high country, glistening lakes, fast flowing rivers and rugged mountains. Surely this must be paradise!

What lay before them, on the edge of the impenetrable Fiordland National Park, filled them with excitement. It was no easy matter getting themselves and their horses through the spiky speargrass and matagouri bushes and it was a weary and bloody pair that finally emerged at the water’s edge where William Rees’ statue stands today. By early 1861 Rees was established as the first farmer of the Wakatipu, with a large flock of sheep, some cows and other animals. Boats now provided transport and the population of Queenstown, the town that was considered fit for Queen Victoria, started slowly to grow.

However, Rees’ peaceful new life was soon to be disrupted – gold was being discovered throughout Otago and the goldseekers were making their way towards the rivers of Queenstown…

Sailor, William Fox was one of the first men to find local gold, in the Arrow River. Trying to keep this discovery of untold wealth between himself and a few mates proved difficult. Word was out that Fox was onto something.

On one supplies run, William realised he was being followed by fortune seekers. He crept away in the middle of the night, leaving his tent standing, and managed to fool his stalkers for a short time.

Soon though, the Queenstown district was flooded with goldseekers from all corners of the globe, come to pan the Arrow and Shotover Rivers and willing to risk life and limb for their share.

Unbelievably, in the height of the rush, Queenstown was busier than it is today and ghost towns like Macetown and Skippers, these days just a deserted handful of old stone cottages, were flourishing with schools, bakeries, bars and churches.

Within just a decade, the frenzy was over. The days of plucking gold nuggets from the icy waters of the local rivers were gone. In two years alone over 40 tonnes of gold had been discovered, yet the surface had barely been scratched! There was still gold to be had but getting at it was to involve slightly more sophisticated methods than a pair of hands and a goldpan.

Mining began in earnest until eventually it too fizzled out, but not without reputedly leaving more gold in the hills than has ever been mined from them.

So if you want to try your luck at making it big, there’s still gold in them there hills!

A nugget of Southern Lakes history 79

Page 80: Kidz Go Southern Lakes :: summer 2013

The Gold Rush Riddle

1862 – Gold was discovered in the Arrow River by Jack Tewa (Maori Jack).

1863 – One of the biggest single discoveries of gold was found in the Shotover River.

1870s – Over 40 tonnes of gold were discovered but the rest was too hard to get at with a gold pan!

There's gold in the hills! Queenstown and Otago were a big part of New Zealand's gold rush...here are some facts about the discovery of gold in New Zealand...

A goldpan is a shallow pan that you can still use to search for gold, but you have to know where to look....

Maori Jack couldn't get all of the gold out of the Arrow and Shotover Rivers, but he did leave a tip on the best place to start looking. Trouble is, he's written it in a secret code. Can you solve the code and give yourself a head start in the great gold rush?
